STOP. LOOK. LISTEN. REMEMBER. THERE’S A SCENE IN the 1997 movie “Metro” where Michael Rapaport enters a mocked-up convenience store in the middle of a hostage-rescue training exercise. His supervisor and trainer, Eddie Murphy (why not?), gives him a couple of seconds to survey the scene and then tells him to close his eyes and recount everything he has seen so far. Rapaport rattles off the location of a bad guy and a hostage, and throws in the special on toilet paper for comedic effect — it was, after all, a 1990’s buddy cop flick. The opening of this month’s cruising feature by Pam Bacich reminded me of that movie, or at least that scene, which is really the only one I remember from the movie. “Stop. Don’t move. Look around and try to remember everything you see. Now close your eyes…,” she wrote. “Whenever I travel to new places in the world, I always take a moment in a favorite spot to make a mental record of that particular point in time. It’s like a photograph hidden in my mind.” Seems to be a solid piece of advice from someone who, along with her husband, Mick, has cruised to and visited a lot of locations. Does anyone have a place he can recall with such photographic clarity? Mine is a sandbar in the middle of the Mississippi River, when I was a kid. Families would arrive by boat, which was the only way to get there, anchor to the beach and spend the weekend grilling hot dogs, hamburgers and fish. Remember those green Coleman camp stoves? The air smelled like propane when my dad couldn’t get the flame lit right away. Short trees and scrub brush dominated the center of the bar — it was pretty big and, I believe, “permanent” — but the humans occupied the beach. Tents popped up. Frisbees and footballs were slung. Fathers would walk up the beach a bit and enter the river’s current for a quick ride back to the campsite. Probably not the safest activity for the less strong swimmers, but it was the 1970s; our station wagon carried seven people and I’m certain it didn’t have that many seatbelts. Anyway, of the countless special anchorages along the Passage, the Baciches have a list of six that rise to the top of their “mental record.” And they share the where and the why, along with some great photos (including some very cool drone shots), beginning on page 34. Cruising season draws near. Do you know where you’re going this year, to start, or add to, your own personal memory album?

COMING ATTRACTION

AS THE GT LINE GROWS WITH THE COMING-THIS-YEAR 59, SO DOES ITS FISHABILITY AND COASTAL CRUISING APPEAL.

HATTERAS’ GT LINE is about to add a family member. Under construction at the time of this writing and scheduled to launch this year, the GT59 is, like the rest of the line, built to battle the big one on the open ocean. The 59 becomes the fifth member of the GT line and comes in as the third-largest with a 59-foot, 9-foot LOA, larger than the 45 and 54 and smaller than the 63 and 70. Like its siblings, the convertible is meant to go fast — Hatteras is projecting a top speed north of 40 knots with twin CAT C-32A 1,600 hp diesels — and it’s tournament ready. Fishing rigging is integrated everywhere, and storage can be found from stem to stern. In-gunwale rod holders, rod holder racks, a fighting chair with rod-holding capacity, and outriggers will make the yacht bristle with fish-catching armament when fully outfitted. Flybridge and tuna tower driving stations deliver maneuverability and visibility. Depending on a buyer’s planned ratio of fishing to cruising, he can go with the standard three-stateroom, two-head arrangement, or he can add a third head. For a more fishing-heavy arrangement, owners can opt for the optional tackle center where the third head would go, belowdecks in the companionway, and a split-berth array in the forward VIP that might accommodate a crew of angling buddies. No matter the configuration, the salon and galley in the main cabin are built with comfort and luxury in mind. High-end wood dominates the space, but it is nicely offset by light stone, headers and upholstery. Windows to both sides and aft ensure the cabin is well lit, and from the outside, the windows look like a pair of Oakley sunglasses that wrap from the front and down the sides. SKY CHEETAH Peregrine falcons are the overall fastest member of the animal kingdom, regularly exceeding 200 mph when they go into a hunting swoop to catch another bird. Peregrine falcons call pretty much the entire West Coast home, and they do hunt some seabirds and occasionally fish, so keep a looking for one on your next cruise — but blink and you might miss it!

BORING ROCKS

HAVE YOU EVER wondered why some rocks along the seashore have holes in them — almost like a bowling ball, but haphazardly placed? On the West Coast it is likely the work of a Piddock clam, which is a bivalve with a special shell that has fine teeth that burrow round holes into rocks. The little bivalves use the rock to burrow down and filter plankton.

App Applegate used his Social Security checks to fund his build of the 80-foot vessel. He built the boat, by hand, so he could one day sail to Cuba from Orcas Island. Sadly, Applegate died in 2013, and Aproximada remains in the same spot it was built. A documentary short of the same name was made about Applegate’s story in 2016. We’re a couple of months into the new year, and young boat operators in California need to remember there’s a new regulation that applies to them. As of Jan. 1, 2018, all boat operators under the age of 20 are required to pass a boating safety course and carry a California Boater Card. The requirement expands to operators age 25 and under on Jan. 1, 2019. For more information, visit californiaboatercard.com

MEXICO REPORT

By CAPT. PAT RAINS

Before the beginning 1 ENSENADA: of the two-day run for Turtle Bay, the weather forecasts suggested slightly better sea conditions southbound — 15 knots northwest instead of 20 — if we left Ensenada a day earlier than planned. Leaving early meant skipping the vineyard tours, so at Marina Coral’s welcome party we held an informal show of hands: Who will depart early? Who won’t? The next morning, only four boats stayed, but we all kept in touch on VHF or HF email.

QUINTIN: During the first two-day 2 SAN run south, one of the boat crews wasn’t happy about running overnight, so they put out a VHF call for local knowledge about anchoring at San Quintin for the night. I and three other participants related our favorable experiences there, along with a caution about avoiding the breakers. They decided to stop, enjoyed a restful night and caught up to us the next day.

CEDROS QUESTION: As my group 3 angled offshore from San Quintin

A GROUP EFFORT Safety in numbers and camaraderie make group cruises a great way for rookie south-of-theborder cruisers to get their feet wet.

BOAT OWNERS WHO JOINED the CUBAR Odyssey, a 15-day powerboat rally from San Diego

to La Paz, cited one of two main reasons, based on experience: safety in numbers and camaraderie. Of the 50 boat owners who signed up, those who described themselves as first-timers to Mexico cruising said the idea of safety in numbers was primarily what enticed then to join. Most of the entrants with some experience boating south of the border said they were primarily looking forward to sharing the group’s camaraderie. But in the end, how significant were safety in numbers and camaraderie? Dozens of tales of high-seas thrills and adventures — and a few misadventures — filled the boisterous welcome party at Marina CostaBaja, our final destination in La Paz. It was obvious, as I listened to the tales, that camaraderie and safety in numbers played a huge part in everyone’s success. Here are just a few examples.

and Punta Baja toward Cedros Island, the big following seas developed a more northerly component. Constant conversations on VHF focused on which way around Cedros Island everyone thought would be more comfortable: outside or inside. Hoping for (and finding) a narrow lee along the island’s east side, my boat opted for inside. Those who went outside found rougher seas. But it wasn’t until we all eventually had to pass through the Dewey Channel’s current turbulence that we regained VHF contact with each other. “Watch out for a mile-long string of lobster floats off Isla Natividad,” was everyone’s VHF mantra. With that warning repeated boat to boat, we all made it into Turtle Bay without getting snagged.

TURTLE BAY: One boat’s autopilot 4 compass failed on the way down. Its crew didn’t look forward to hand steering the rest of the way, but they weren’t likely to find a replacement in remote Turtle Bay. After calling around the anchorage on VHF — Surprise! — another boat happened to have

At Man of War Cove in Magdalena Bay (opposite page), 15 crews enjoyed a guided dinghy tour of the mangrove estuary up the Soledad Channel, led by Enrique Soto of Soto Eco Tours. Brown Eyed Girl (left) limps to its berth at Marina Puerto Los Cabos after being towed more than 100 miles after its main shaft broke.

a brand new flux-gate compass, still in the box as a spare. The fix took about an hour. Despite recent price hikes nationwide on Pemex fuel, all the CUBAR boats that needed diesel enjoyed a discount we’d arranged at Enrique’s fuel dock (33 pesos per liter) and water taxis ($5 round trip). We also arranged a sit-down lunch for 120 hungry crew at Talpa’s Restaurant.

5 MAN OF WAR: Our peaceful overnight

anchorage in Man of War Cove was blanketed by dense fog the next morning, when Tom Nielsen had scheduled a halfday guided dinghy tour of the mangrove estuaries in the Soledad Channel. Despite a late start, we had 15 dinghies ready to follow tour guide Enrique Soto and two 22-foot excursion pangas. But as we sped out of the anchorage, the crew on one of the smaller dinghies called on VHF to say they had been left behind, couldn’t locate the pack in the fog and couldn’t find their back to the anchorage. Another dinghy happened to have been recording GPS. It received the lost crew’s position and quickly circled back, found them and led them to rejoin the tour.

TOW: Finally, there’s the rescue 6 RESCUE of Brown Eyed Girl, the smallest boat in the fleet (28-foot Skipjack), which lost its main shaft while fishing 20 miles offshore south of Magdalena Bay. At first, Larry Lucore and his crew of burly firefighters tried using their dinghy’s outboard as a very slow get-me-home engine, aimed toward

Cabo San Lucas, but by nightfall rough seas built and severe cavitation ensued. Christie Donnelly aboard Varnabank expertly coordinated all communications. The CUBAR f leet was spread along about 150 miles of ocean, so Donnelly used her skills on SSB, Ham, InReach, Iridium Go, Spot, and Iridium sat phones with email. Almost every boat had AIS, which helped tremendously. Several of our boat crews volunteered to head offshore, meet the 28-footer and stand by in case, as expected, the outboard failed and they needed to be towed. Rigging a tow at night in offshore conditions is chancy, but within the fleet sufficient skill and camaraderie were mustered. Sprezzaturra, Eric Bescoby’s 40-foot Nordhavn, had ample fuel range and a good towing rig, and the crew was experienced, so without sacrificing the outboard, they hooked up and towed Brown Eyed Girl more than 100 miles through the night and most of the next day. As Sprezzatura and Brown Eyed Girl finally motored into Marina Puerto Los Cabos, we all honked our horns and applauded them. The CUBAR Odyssey, the Baja Ha Ha and the Panama Posse all offer great camaraderie. But safety in numbers doesn’t necessarily refer to fending off pirate attacks. I think it’s more about participating in a larger group of volunteers that’s committed to sharing its wealth of boating experience, local knowledge, tools and, finally, camaraderie. Double Chuck Water Deionizer CR Spotless

A quick rinse with water from a Double Chuck water deionizer unit doesn’t just wash away dried contaminants such as salt, it absorbs them and carries them away during the rinse process. There is no need to dry off the work surface, because as the water dries, all that is left behind is the work surface — glass, chrome, gelcoat or clear coat. The water is “spotless” because of a deionization process that removes all dissolved solids in the water. The Double Chuck will provide about 400 gallons of spotless water, and at only 23 inches tall, it’s easy to stow. simplechuck.com

IF YOUR BOAT HAS been winterized thoroughly and buttoned-up tightly against the consequences of the cold weather, you’re justified in not visiting your pride and joy for six months, right? Well, if you can stand such a long period of separation, you have more restraint than I. There are many good reasons to visit your boat a couple of times during the winter.

Exterior

Conduct the first check as you walk down the dock: Is the boat still afloat? Start with a visual check of the exterior. Is the boat floating on its usual lines? If in the fall you installed a cover, give it the once over, checking for tears or loose lines. You don’t want to arrive in April to find that the cockpit is full of water. Tarps have a habit of tearing at load points, and these need to be checked often. Tighten all the lines securing it and double them up if they look suspect. Make sure tarps can’t flap against the boat, because they’ll mark up the hull for sure. Is there any floating debris, such as driftwood, in the boat slip? Walk around the boat on the dock or deck, making sure fenders are placed

correctly and secured, and mooring lines are holding the boat safely in the slip. Those lines need to be secure while still allowing the boat a little movement in the slip. If mooring lines are too tight, they will put undue stress on the boat’s cleats. In addition, make sure the lines are not chafing the boat’s paint, brightwork or fiberglass. Check that scuppers are clear and shorepower cables are securely plugged in at both ends, with no signs of arcing or burning. If vermin are a problem in your marina, look for signs they’ve been visiting and take steps to discourage them.

Interior

Check that hatches are secure or locked, and look for signs of leakage on the deckhead, cabin walls, bulkheads and deck. Check under cushions and berths for leaks, condensation or mildew. In fact, it’s a good idea to prop up the cushions, so air circulates underneath them.

Bilge

It’s critical that the bilge pumps are operating properly. At least once a month, manually

lift the float switch to ensure it activates the pump. Make sure the intakes are clear of debris that could clog them when the pumps are most needed. It’s surprising how easily water can find its way into a boat that is supposedly watertight.

Electrical

Check the meters, monitors and panels

of the electrical and battery-charging systems. Is the shorepower system connected and functioning? Are all the circuit breakers and fuses in order? As for the batteries, it’s a good idea to maintain a charge on them, whether you remove the batteries or leave them installed during the winter. All batteries, both new and old, will discharge during periods of

inactivity. If the batteries aren’t on a float charge, give them a midwinter charge. A battery maintained with a charge on it will provide longer service life than one allowed to continually run down. A boat moored in the water during the layup period needs an operating bilge pump, and the bilge pump relies on a good battery. Make sure the battery terminals are clean. Take the cables off, clean the connectors, apply a dielectric grease to the terminals and reconnect, making sure the connections are tight. Check the electrolyte level.

On the Hard

Your Twin Rivers Policy Comes With An Agent

If your boat is stored on the hard, on jack stands or a trailer, strong winter winds can cause a jack stand or two to shift slightly, perhaps leaving the boat unbalanced. Heavy rains could let them settle deeper into the ground. Don’t count on the yard workers to catch these problems before your boat is damaged, particularly if the boat is hidden at the back of the yard. If the boat is shrink-wrapped, check that there is adequate ventilation; otherwise, you have a breeding ground for mildew. If you haven’t already done so, post your contact number where it can be seen easily from the dock in an emergency. Make sure the marina office knows how to contact you too.

GRINDING GRID’S GEARS Head Games

A FRIEND OF MINE once bought a boat named Half Moon. As I was servicing another boat in a partially secluded inlet, the friend and his wife drifted by, trolling for striper. I know the boat’s head was in pristine condition, because it hadn’t been out of the box for 20 years, but the owner’s wife proceeded to use the gunwale as a support and … you get the picture. The next day I called him and suggested he change 22  SEAMAGAZINE.COM  MARCH 2018

the name of the boat to Full Moon. We thought it was hilarious. His wife hasn’t spoken to me in 26 years. “Enclosed head” equates to a car’s “glove box.” Open your car’s glove box. Look through its contents. Ketchup packets, registration card, state inspection sticker, menus, owner’s manual, 200 napkins, salt packets, tire pressure gauge, Band-Aids, mints. I

may have forgotten to tell you to remove the gloves from the glove box, but I doubt it, ’cuz there ain’t no gloves in the box! I Googled center console enclosed heads and came up with a bunch of 25-foot and larger center consoles that had enclosed heads in the console. The very first one I looked at had a two-gallon bait bucket and attached rope atop what I thought might be

a toilet, a throwable life cushion — no line — and several life jackets. I saw no reason to refute any truth in advertising laws with my questions. Subsequent boat ads didn’t show the enclosures’ insides. They probably held all the gloves from the car glove boxes. Recently I had the opportunity to cure a tachometer problem in a 26-foot center console with an enclosed head. Because this was a high-quality boat, the dashboard had screws with washers and nuts, accessible only from inside the console. It took about 30 minutes to remove the contents of the console and stack them where nobody would get hurt: seven orange PFDs, still in plastic bags; two throwable life cushions, one without 50 feet of attached retrieval line, one with; an empty fire extinguisher, still in its box; expired flares; a five-gallon “mud bucket” that smelled suspicious; a small bucket full of lead trolling weights; another bucket full of lures and hooks; fishing rods; and at the bottom, a portable head still in the factory box. As I said, I moved it so I didn’t get hurt, lowered the protective cover for the backside of the gauges, reattached the sender wire for the port tachometer and proceeded to refill the console. I charged the owner an hour’s labor for emptying and refilling the console, one-tenth of an hour for the five minutes it took to reattach the wire, and the service vehicle fee, for a total of $138. I thought the weather forecast had changed when he started blustering about the charges. I told him I had two schools of thought: 1.  Take it to a brick-and-mortar dealer for repair at twice my labor rate, and wonder — while the boat sits in a caged lot for a few weeks — if what the dealer wrote about needing a new “frammis” had anything to do with anything. I came by within 24 hours and let him watch every part of the process. 2.  Save himself a bunch of money and get hold of me to tell me he’d emptied the hold so I had room to work. Now I see 40-foot center consoles powered by triple outboards with an enclosure at least six fishermen could sleep in — and use the head, were it accessible — but I know in my heart of hearts it’s just a big damned glove box with extra room for more ketchup.

EVERGLADES

355 CENTER CONSOLE

This hardcore sportfishing machine has a social side too. its return route from Catalina Island appeared, our boat changed direction and the driver’s eyes narrowed a bit. We weren’t aimed at the ferry itself, but rather at the sizable wake streaming aft of it. If the Pacific Ocean wasn’t going to give us a challenge on test day, Garrison Williams of Tide Yacht Sales was going to seek one out, and the ferry was our best bet. Traveling in excess of 40 mph, the Everglades 355 Center Console we were testing hurtled toward the ferry wake. I grasped the hardtop’s powder-coated aluminum frame support a little tighter. We hit the wake with the bow of the deep-V hull, rose slightly and … landed smoothly. No shaking, vibrating or rattling. Anticlimactic, if you ask me, but really solid. I took the wheel and we hit the wake again. And again. Same

result. Everglades’ building process showed its worth every time. The hull is one piece, molded around structural foam, as part of the builder’s patented RAMCAP construction process, which creates a heavier, stronger boat, and the deck is one piece too. The hull liner and deck are then mated to create a rigid one-piece product. I won’t go into the whole process, but as Williams pointed out, the builder hasn’t had a hull failure. The no-hull-failure thought was comforting as we zipped across the top of the small ocean swells off the Southern California coast at 52 mph, the 355CC’s top speed on test day, the combined 900 hp of three Yamaha F300 four-strokes growling at their max 5800 rpm. That kind of speed

can get anglers from one spot to another in a hurry. Fuel burn was 79 gph at top speed. At 4600 rpm, the boat settled in at 42.5 mph, which we measured as its most efficient cruise speed — 0.9 mpg at a 47 gph fuel burn. Take it down to 4000 rpm and the fuel efficiency is better — 1.1 mpg at 33 mph — but it will be up to each owner to decide if the nearly 10 mph slower speed is desirable. Really, from 4500 rpm to about

While the 355CC is definitely outfitted for maximum fishing action, it won’t be a social pariah. 5600 rpm, fuel efficiency is consistent, varying by 0.2 mpg. Though heavier than other comparably sized center consoles, the 355CC was quick out of the hole, getting on plane in 3.5 seconds and reaching 30 mph in 5.8 seconds. Handling on the open ocean was precise thanks to SeaStar Optimus electronic power steering, and the nimble 35-footer was equally adept around the docks, since it was equipped with an Optimus joystick system. Owners could further the boat’s dockside capabilities by adding a bow thruster, but that’s probably redundant with the joystick. I write “center console” and most readers get the immediate picture of how the 355CC is laid out. A console occupies the center of

The hardtop supports an upper helm station (left), twin helm seats (far right, bottom), outriggers, a radar unit, a rod rack and a great view. On the main deck, the helm seat and console bench can both hold three passengers. Another seat is hidden in the leaning post console. The helm is fully outfitted, and the cabin includes a head, sink and refrigerator. 26  SEAMAGAZINE.COM  MARCH 2018

the boat, the cockpit is aft of it and the bow is forward. That’s the case here. But there is a lot going on in and around that console, starting with the cabin that’s built into it. A crawl-in day berth is forward, and a sink with a refrigerator underneath it and a head are aft. At the helm, twin Garmin GPSmap XSV multifunction displays dominate the slightly forward-angled dash. Below them are a Yamaha engine display and a board filled with systems switches. There is room between the MFDs for a small

display or two. Situated to port is the stainless steering wheel with a turning knob, and the engine throttles are immediately to the right. Trim tab controls and the Optimus 360 joystick are on a flat section of dash, next to cupholders and a lockable glove box. A comfortable bench seat with room for three rear ends fronts the helm and hovers over a Yeti cooler. The bench has two bolster sections, one single and one doublewide. To spare the captain’s legs and back during a long day of pelagic pursuit, an anti-fatigue

pad is built into the deck at the helm. It’s a nice touch that feels great. And to ensure the folks at the helm seat can stay cool, one of Everglades’ innovations comes in handy. The windshield of the three-sided console enclosure can be lowered some or all of the way, LOA 35 ft., 4 in. allowing in exactly as Beam much breeze as the 10 ft., 8 in. driver wants. Draft Built into the front of 24 in. With the table lowered and the cushions removed, it’s a casting deck with room for a couple of anglers. Plus, a 129-gallon fishbox is built into the deck, and rod storage is under the gunwales to both sides. In the cockpit, a leaning post workstation is immediately aft of the helm bench seat. It includes a sink, a livewell, eight tackle drawers and a fighting seat that folds out of the unit. Built into the transom is a 56-gallon fishbox, a livewell and a six-holder rod rack.

I counted at least 28 rod holders spread throughout the boat. Two more seats fold out of the transom, to lend the cockpit some social status. A portside dive door ensures easy boarding access from the dock. Over top of the console and the workstation is a hardtop, which is stretched on our test boat to cover the forward bench seat too. It’s called the X-top and is held up by thick aluminum tubing in the four corners 28  SEAMAGAZINE.COM  MARCH 2018

that can double as ladders for the more adventurous. Most folks will use the ladder that’s atop the work station and emerges through a central hatch. The extended portion is home to the radar unit, and the upper helm sits directly above the main helm. How fully the upper helm is outfitted is up to each buyer, but it can include full electronics, twin bolstered seats, drink holders and a hardtop. The whole thing can be lowered for transport with gas-assisted shocks. Oh, and there are more rod holders up there too. (I counted at least 28 rod holders spread throughout the boat.) Fishing amenities on the 355CC are ubiquitous. I’ve already mentioned the

fore and aft fishboxes, the transom and workstation livewells, and the bounty of rod holders. In addition, twin outriggers are standard, and options are available for upgrades. Coaming pads encircle the 127-square-foot cockpit, and buyers can opt for bow coaming pads. Four under-gunwale rod racks, including lockable compartments, will store and secure the tools of the trade. All of the rod compartments and wells and boxes are finished. Raw- and freshwater washdowns in the cockpit ensure fish guts can be quickly washed away, and that anglers can be quickly washed too. While the 355CC is definitely outfitted for maximum fishing action, it won’t be a social pariah, thanks to the bow’s versatility. A Bimini top with carbon fiber support poles is an option, so in addition to the passengers on the console bench seat and the helm seat being covered, the folks in the bow — six, easily — can enjoy shade during a harbor cruise too.

PEARL 80 The U.K.-based builder delivers more than expected in 80 feet of yacht.

HERE’S THE SCENE: I walk out of a high-rise

hotel in downtown Miami, the morning sun bouncing off numerous windows in the skyscrapers that line the Miami River. After taking a few steps toward the water, I see my ride, a new Pearl 80 motoryacht, its exterior glistening with not-yet-evaporated morning dew. I think to myself, “This yacht doesn’t look 80 feet.” That’s probably due to the

Tester’s Opinion

well-proportioned flybridge deck and house and the unbroken sheer line, not to mention the sizable salon glass and hull-side blackout windows. I step aboard, noting the minimal movement of the hull as my generous girth tests the stability of the underwater design. Hull wins. Greeting me is Iain Smallridge, managing director for Pearl Yachts, a U.K.-based builder — Smallridge’s accent sufficiently

thick to give that away. Pearl Yachts, founded in 1997, has mostly been a Eurofocused marketer of yachts from 50 to 95 feet and formally made its introduction to the U.S. market at the Ft. Lauderdale International Boat Show in late 2017. Pearl certainly has created an eye-catching yacht with cool innovations and styling that is a bit of a departure from the norm. Entering the salon is akin to crossing the threshold of a swanky Park Avenue suite. Furnishings are low profile, so there’s visibility from stem to stern. Indirect and trace lighting and gloss finishes and mirrors illuminate the area and accentuate the grains and textures in the wood finishes and materials. The interior is designed by Kelly Hoppen MBE, of Kelly Hoppen Interiors (MBE stands for Member of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire), and her choices — neutral palette, beautiful textures, suede and wood finishes — complement one another. Hoppen laid out the yacht so every area is inviting and comfortable. In the salon, this Pearl 80 has an L-settee to port with a huge ottoman that can be used as a seat or with a tray as a coffee table. Interestingly, Pearl didn’t make this a dining area, as there are plenty of other places to enjoy a

The Kelly Hoppen-designed interior’s neutral palette, wood finishes and suede create a cohesive look, from the salon (top right) to the master stateroom (bottom middle) to the galley/helm area (top left). The exterior includes dining/social areas on the flybridge to starboard (bottom right) and port (bottom left) and on the aft deck (top middle).

It’s evident throughout the 80 that Pearl is not afraid to be bold with styling and layout in order to deliver an exceptional yacht. The VIP is smartly laid out, and the use of white paneling below and stateroom windows is intelligently insane. The end result speaks for itself.

From cruising the slow zones to hitting the higher rpms, the Pearl 80 keeps a steady attitude. With a pair of MAN V-12 1,800 hp diesel powerplants under the hood, the 80 sauntered along at 9.6 knots, burning 20 gph. Push the throttles to a cruise of 20 knots (1600 rpm) and the MANs burn 75 gph. Pin the sticks and the yacht reaches an eye-popping 35 knots at 2350 rpm, where fuel burn is 180 gph. Forward and up a few steps are the chic galley and the lower helm station. I say chic because when the galley cabinets, counters and appliances aren’t in use, they blend in with the overall style. When it’s time to use the galley, there’s a Miele induction flat

The Pearl 80’s social zones extend all the way to the bow, where a C-shaped settee sits aft of a sun lounge that is easily large enough for three people.

The windows alone give more than a hint that Pearl is willing to reach out of the box. And the twin berths can be joined to create larger berths. Additionally, the forward VIP is better appointed than some master staterooms I have seen. Pearl took the typical centerline berth and moved it catty-corner, making it a true walk-around berth. The space gained by offsetting the berth is enough for a two-person couch, which makes the VIP a destination for more than just sleeping. There’s a vanity/desk area and a walk-in closet with lights in the hanger bar — no excuse for mismatched clothing. An en suite head has a basin sink and shower stall with a seat. With more than six feet of headroom, the full-beam master stateroom is cavernous.

Not only are there dual sunpads but also a U-shaped settee with a foldaway teak table. Too sunny? No problem. A Bimini shade pulls up from a recessed storage channel and will cover the seating area. Smallridge said Pearl is seeing a lot of middle-aged and younger boaters interested in this model. “The potential buyers are getting younger, in their mid-30s and 40s, and with families,” he said, adding that the Pearl 80 seeks to differentiate itself with maximum space and volume, a garage for a PWC, a hydraulic swim platform and a big master. “It has a contemporary interior design that works.”

henever I travel to new places in the world, I always take a moment in a favorite spot to make a mental record of that particular point in time. It’s like a photograph hidden in my mind. I sit very still. I look around and notice the color of the water, the boulders on the beach, the green of the trees, the smells surrounding me. I breathe deeply and take it all in. I know I may never be back and I want to capture this sense of place, so I can pull out the memory when I need it the most.

The first time I remember doing this was in the Seychelles Islands in 1992. I can still see the beauty of my particular “favorite” beach. I was by myself on a huge boulder, surrounded by the bluest of blue water. I have used that vision to help me get to sleep at night, to calm me through MRIs and to daydream away a rainy afternoon. Mick and I recently cruised the Inside Passage to southeast Alaska on our 55-foot Fleming, Mola Mola. It was our fourth trip to this magnificent part of the world. We visited our favorite bays and harbors and searched out new favorites along the way. In this rugged wilderness there is no shortage of spectacular scenery. There are grand surprises around every corner. Six Inside Passage anchorages in particular stand out in our memory, for their combination of glorious sights, potential for wildlife interaction and a special mystical, magical feeling. These places now make up new pages in the photography book in my mind.

iordland Conservancy is a large marine park in British Columbia that encompasses Kynoch and Mussel inlets, their estuaries and surrounding mountains. Both inlets are spectacular and worthy of a visit. On our last trip to Fiordland, we fell in love with Mussel Inlet, which we approached by way of a 6½-mile fjord that begins where Mathieson and Sheep channels converge. Sheer granite cliffs climb to

Mussel Inlet, in the Fiordland Conservancy, provides a bounty of wildlife sightings, including bears of the brown and black variety. A river bordered by steep fjord walls heads inland and makes for a great dinghy excursion.

more than 3,200 feet and are dotted with dense coastal forests and imposing waterfalls. The most impressive waterfall is at the entrance to Oatswish Bay. It’s about 150 feet wide at the base and has perfect rock steps that look like a landscape architect designed them. Farther up the fjord, Mussel Inlet and Poison Cove await. Each has a river to be explored, and both make interesting dinghy trips. At Mussel Inlet we were greeted by two Watchmen from the Kitasoo/ Xai’xais Nation, which co-manages the Conservancy with BC Parks. They explained the limitations for visiting the Conservancy. Beginning Aug. 1, they control the entrance into the estuary that marks the start of the river. A maximum of 14 people are allowed up the river at one time — and only one small boat. If the boat from Spirit Bear Lodge from Klemtu arrives, it has priority. Even if this happens, visitors can sit on their boat at the head of the bay and have a great chance of seeing bears on the beach (and explore the river after the tour departs). Both brown and black bears are regularly spotted fishing for the abundant salmon. We watched in awe as a huge brown bear dove underwater and came up with a prized meal. Ashore, wolves, mink, eagles and seagulls all wait for bears’ salmon leftovers.

KHUTZE INLET

K

hutze Inlet has been a favorite anchorage since our first trip to Alaska, in 2006. A long fjord entrance sets the scene for the beauty that lies ahead. After a five-mile ride and a dogleg to starboard, the vista opens into a grand bowl. There are mountains with sparkling ice fields on three sides and a spectacular towering waterfall surrounded by several smaller falls. Creeks run into the bay on either side of a drying flat. At high tide, it’s possible to take a dinghy or kayak between the two and be surrounded by high brush, rocks and trees. We’ve been treated to grizzly bears, the cries of wolves, lots of birdlife and playful seals. To add to the allure and adventure of Khutze, there is a touch of danger in

anchoring. Visitors need to be very aware of the drying peninsula at the head of the Khutze River on the north side of the anchorage. It shoals quickly, so we always give it extra room. One morning after an extremely high tide, we woke to find that a 70-foot tree had floated out of the river and lodged itself

TO ADD TO THE ALLURE AND ADVENTURE OF KHUTZE, THERE IS A TOUCH OF DANGER IN ANCHORING. inside our anchor chain. It ran the length of the boat — on the side where we launch our dinghy. We have often enjoyed this serene anchorage by ourselves, but this time we were thankful for the helpful fellow boaters who came to our rescue.

FORDS TERROR

O

ff Endicott Arm, 60 miles southeast of Juneau, Alaska, guarded by a bottleneck entrance that requires careful planning, is a sheer-walled fjord called Fords Terror. In 1889, a naval crewmember named Ford rowed his dinghy into the narrow entrance at slack tide, only to be trapped inside by the turbulent currents until the tide turned. Today, boaters are armed with tide and current charts and can plan a safe voyage with accuracy. Nonetheless, many boaters on their first transit of the tiny opening follow others who are more experienced. We have launched our dinghy and done a practice run to scope out the depths and to get a good mental picture of the sharp turn in the center of the channel. Past the entrance, a vast wonderland opens to visitors. The towering fjord walls remind us of Yosemite with water.

Magnificent waterfalls and towering crevasses run from the top of the mountains to the sea and display the deep gouging effect of long-departed glaciers. We have seen black bears frolic on the beaches and had curious, normally shy harbor porpoises swim around the boat. Much to our surprise, we even snagged a king crab one evening as we were jigging for halibut. The wonders of Fords Terror are many, but the thing that stands out the most for me is the deep emerald green color of the water that reflects the splendor surrounding it. Pure magic!

4.

RED BLUFF BAY

T

he stunning red bluffs on the east side of Baranof Island in Chatham Strait sit as sentinel to my husband’s favorite anchorage, Red Bluff Bay. These prominent and treeless red bluffs mark the unmistakable entrance to this near-perfect anchorage. The bluff is high in chromium, magnesium, nickel and iron, which are responsible for this geologic feature’s phenomenal color and the lack of vegetation in the immediate area. Passing through the intricate waterway at the entrance to the bay, we were treated to a huge roaring waterfall, a large “bear meadow” and snowcapped mountains as a backdrop. A massive granite bowl is home to silvery slivers of waterfalls, snowfields and hanging glaciers. And if all of this isn’t enough, the fascinating ruins of an old cannery occupy the shore opposite the massive waterfall. Brown bears are frequent visitors to the drying flats, and the Sitkoh Creek is fun to explore and offers additional chances to see wildlife. Trumpeter swans, river otters, seals, mergansers, harlequin ducks and eagles frequent the area. The shrimping is reported to be outstanding, and the bay offers good protection and solid anchoring. On our last afternoon in Red Bluff, the sun came out, so we launched our drone and tried to capture the grand scale of the towering peaks and waterfalls that dominate the bay. Even these gorgeous aerial photos couldn’t do it justice.

Past the treeless red bluffs of Red Bluff Bay lie tree-covered cliffs cut by waterfalls sourced high in the surrounding snowcapped mountains. ocation, location, location! Half of the joys of Idaho Inlet are in its approach. Idaho Inlet sits on the northern shore of Chichagof Island, the fifth-largest island in the United States. Its entrance is off Icy Strait — the prime feeding ground for humpback whales — via the Inian Islands. Pods of orcas, the occasional minke whale, harbor seals, sea otters and Steller sea lions also frequent this area. We have watched in amazement as humpback whales breached

fill and empty from the Gulf of Alaska, are definitely worth exploring. These currents stir the seawater and bring a delicious meal to the surface, as sea lions and seabirds scour the water and feast. On one occasion the hunt reached a frenzied pitch as dozens of sea lions jumped in and out of the currents and threw fish in the air in what appeared to be a mighty game of catch. When we can pry ourselves away from the wonders of Icy Strait and the Inian Islands, the night’s anchorage in Idaho Inlet is quite wonderful. Silt has filled the bay over the

We’ve also spent an hour inside the 10-mile channel that leads to the head of the bay, watching humpbacks breach between us and the shore. It always takes our breath away when these mighty animals are close enough that we can listen to them breathe and blow. decades, creating a flat shelf that provides perfect anchoring. The inlet is nestled among dramatic tree-topped mountains. Yellow kelp rings the head of the bay at low tide. High grasses and wildflowers are thick. There are streams and beaches to explore and berries to be picked. Be alert for black and brown bears, which also enjoy the inlet’s bounty.

ehm Canal is the major waterway that cuts through Misty Fiords National Monument, 40 miles east of Ketchikan. It is more than 100 miles long and is extraordinary among natural canals for both its length and depth. Because Misty Fiords, which includes Behm Canal and its spectacular anchorages, is slightly off the beaten path, it is often overlooked by transiting boaters. We have found it takes at least three or four days to even begin to explore an area that encompasses some of Alaska’s most breathtaking scenery. Rudyerd Bay is one of the highlights of Misty Fiords. Receded glaciers have created 3,000-foot-high fjords that cut through steep-sided mountains and extend far into the mainland. It is exhilarating to cruise past dramatic 1,000-foot-high waterfalls that plunge through the rainforest and over mosscovered cliffs. Wildlife is abundant; we have seen several species of salmon, whales, mountain goats and deer. Last summer on our way to Rudyerd Bay, we watched in delight as a family of six wolves played on the beach. The four pups bounced and jumped around like puppies in a typical suburban backyard. Punchbowl Cove sits at the mouth of Rudyerd Bay. A 3,000-foot-tall glacially carved granite wall on the east side of the cove makes it obvious how Punchbowl got its name. At the head of the bay is one buoy that’s available on a first-come, first-served basis, and there are anchorages for other boats. In the evening and morning, we had the cove to ourselves and soaked in the magic and untouched serenity of this pristine wilderness. During the height of the day, however, many seaplanes land in front of the massive granite bowl. Passengers get out and stand on the plane’s floats so they can relish the cove’s grandeur. We watched them fly away, knowing we could stay as long as we wanted.

Yellow kelp rings the head of Idaho Inlet at low tide (opposite), and its beaches are popular with bears. At Rudyerd Bay, 3,000-foot-tall cliffs created by glaciers create dramatic scenery and are home to 1,000foot waterfalls. At the mouth of Rudyerd Bay is Punchbowl Cove, distinguished by a 3,000-foottall wall of granite. Floatplanes bring passengers just to marvel at the natural monolith.

Fresh Thinking Water-makers join the age of the internet.

BY LENNY RUDOW

Water-makers are not exactly

thrilling, eye-catching, sexy, headline-grabbing

products. When most people think of water-makers, they envision a big white box that sucks in saltwater and pours out freshwater. That’s the end of story —

until it’s not.

Spectra Watermakers introduced the Connect Controller app, which allows boat owners to monitor and control their water-maker from anywhere on the boat — or anywhere in the world. Dometic offers a similar app for its Sea Xchange XTC series.

1/30/18 1:36 PM

Fresh Thinking of a water-maker directly from one’s cellphone, tablet or computer, in addition to the system’s onboard touchscreen interface. This type of interface isn’t just remote; it offers easier operation with features such as one-touch tank-fill and auto-flush. Let’s face it, we’ve all become accustomed to smartphone apps, and whether it’s taking command of a widget or operating a water-maker, doing so on a phone is completely intuitive. And it doesn’t benefit only the owner. Since data logging is constant and comprehensive, service technicians can keep tabs on a water-maker’s functionality without having to visit the boat — saving everyone involved both time and money. Issues that arise can be caught quickly, at the first hint of malfunction, and early signs of a need for maintenance, like a drop in productivity, can be identified as they occur. Dometic’s SpotZero Sea Xchange XTC series offers another example of an IOT water-maker. Dometic embeds its “Smart Touch Integrated Intelligent Control” software in the XTC, which again interacts with the remote user via a free app that can be run on a smartphone, tablet or computer. Full monitoring and control abilities are provided both from the app and from a seven-inch touchscreen on the unit itself, and status checks and settings changes can be performed from anywhere there’s internet service. In both of these cases, there’s an added onboard bonus, since one’s phone or tablet can effectively act as close-quarters remote controls too. Most boaters carry their phone at virtually all times, and they can be used to remotely control the water-maker from the bridge or a stateroom, saving someone a trip to the engine-room.

The dramatic 2017 hurricane season put water-makers in the news, as storms including Maria, Irma and Harvey destroyed the infrastructure in a number of areas that don’t have easy access to clean drinking water. In many cases water-makers were brought in so communities in places ranging from the Turks and Caicos to Puerto Rico could have potable water. And in doing so, water-makers earned a newfound respect. Just as importantly, some people began to realize those plain white boxes aren’t always so plain. Sure, they look more or less the same, other than the addition of a digital touchscreen here and there. But beyond that, some water-makers have evolved into high-tech pieces of machinery that are far advanced over the water-makers we saw just a few years ago. The basics of reverse-osmosis water makers used on recreational vessels remain the same: the water gets pre-filtered and then pumped under pressure through a membrane, or a series of membranes, to remove salt and minerals. The process takes filtration down to a microscopic level, since little more than water molecules can pass through the membrane. The good stuff then gets pumped into freshwater tanks; the icky stuff, called brine, gets pumped back overboard. Afterward, some fresh water is usually run through the system to flush it. Both 12v and 120v models are available, as are some that run on engine-driven pumps. In these regards, water-makers have not changed. What has changed, however, is the way owners can interface with these systems.

W

hile certainly not of the utmost importance to the people in need of hurricane relief, one of the biggest developments in modern water-makers, which boat owners need to be aware of, is the products’ entry into the “internet of things,” known as the IOT. With onboard data-logging ability and a connection to the internet, a water-maker can act on its own, sending maintenance reminders and keeping track of how effectively it’s operating. Some even have remote access capability, which allows owners to troubleshoot from afar and remotely control the unit from about anywhere. Spectra’s Newport and Farallon series offer perfect examples. In October 2017, Spectra launched the Connect Controller app, which allows full monitoring and operational control

No matter the technology embedded in a water-maker, it has to fit in the available space, and manufacturers such as Blue Water Desalination have modular systems to accommodate.

O

ne step removed from true IOT is remote control via digital switching. Digital switching systems are becoming more and more popular on boats and yachts of all types and sizes, and it’s no wonder. Those old switches are replaced by touchscreen control, which can be activated from the helm on most modern MFDs. And while some people are a bit hesitant to go all-digital when it comes to controlling their boat’s systems, digital switching is very reliable. Think back. Have you ever flipped a switch at the helm but nothing happened? Of course. Corroded or jiggling connections, switch failures and fuse-box failures are all common events aboard boats, especially

The Dometic SpotZero Sea Xchange XTC (1) and Spectra Newport (2) both use an app to connect to the internet of things. Sea Recovery Aqua Whisper (3) and FCI Max Q+ (4) models can connect to MFDs via NMEA2000. Sea Recovery offers remote screens (5) to help owners keep tabs on their water-maker.

Fresh Thinking older boats. Not only does digital switching minimize these issues by eliminating mechanical contacts, it also helps builders cut down on wiring, which saves weight. It allows different systems to share data, which can eliminate redundant sensors and simplify installations. On moderately self-aware boats that have a cellular or Wi-Fi link to the outer world, certain digital switching systems allow owners to flip those electronic “switches” from afar. While this won’t offer the same level of control as an app that provides direct communication with a water-maker, it does deliver a basic remote interface. The key to taking advantage of such technology lies in choosing a digitally controlled water-maker that’s NMEA2000 compatible. Using the common NMEA2000 digital language is what ensures an MFD knows what the water-maker (or any other accessory or appliance) is communicating. It does not, however, dictate the level of control allowed.

Helmsman t r a w l e r s

With onboard datalogging ability and a connection to the internet, a water-maker can act on its own.

Most new water-maker models that incorporate digital controls are being introduced with NMEA2000 compatibility in mind. Take the Sea Recovery Aqua lines, for example. Certain Aqua Matic and Aqua Whisper models are designed with digital color touchscreens and can communicate with any NMEA2000 display. Units such as the FCI Watermakers Max Q split the difference between full IOT and NMEA2000 integration. This unit, which utilizes a seven-inch marine-certified touchscreen, recently incorporated NMEA2000

compatibility and has a unique IP address for remote access.

A

side from advances in tech and the ability to integrate a water-maker with both the boat and the wider world, the usual never-ending quest to reduce the units’ size and weight continues unabated. Manufacturers such as US Watermakers continue to make units that are modular, are designed to fit into tight spaces and can run on the 12v systems used on smaller boats. Its Island Explorer is one such example. Note that units like this aren’t apt to be quite as advanced in the digital department, but on the flip side of the coin, neither are they quite as advanced in the price department. Watermakers Inc. takes a different approach, offering units that aren’t framed or standalone systems. Instead, they’re modular in nature and are designed to be mounted on a bulkhead. This allows a boat owner to shift the unit’s pieces-parts around a bit, to fit into a boat’s available space.

NORDHAVN N475

The new model in the lineup replaces the 40 and the 43. NORDHAV N’S DESIGNERS HAVE NEVER been afraid to take a popular hull design and stretch it to create a new yacht. It’s a strategy that has met with much success, as six current models are lengthened versions of a smaller boat. Make that seven. The N475 is the latest trawler design to be the beneficiary of a growth spurt. Based on the N43 hull, the 47-and-a-halffoot 475, the first hull of which is currently under construction, will also be the smallest new-build Nordhavn in the lineup, as the 40 and the 43 will be discontinued and their molds destroyed, according to the company. Part of the extra length is dedicated to the cockpit and the flybridge deck, creating a larger social space in the cockpit and more room for toys and a bigger dinghy in the aft section of the bridge, while maintaining room for an upper helm station that features twin captain’s chairs and a large settee. In the main cabin is the salon and galley. The former is aft, just inside the entry door, and includes settees to port and starboard. The bench settee to port has drawer storage under each section, and the J-shaped one to starboard is accompanied by a teak dining table. The U-shaped galley includes two refrigerators, a top-load freezers, a gas range, a microwave, and storage below the counters and overhead. Up a set of stairs is the pilothouse. Its fully equipped helm includes a captain’s chair, engine controls, multifunction displays, gauges and more. A chart table to port can house the optional combo washer/dryer. Aft is a settee with a table, and aft of that is a single berth.

Belowdecks are two staterooms and two heads. The master stateroom spans the nearly 15-foot beam, with a queen berth, three hanging lockers and a head with a separate shower stall. A twin berth to port and a single to starboard give the guest stateroom some versatility, and drawers under the berths ensure there’s storage. In the forepeak is the guest head, where there is room for a toilet, a vanity and a separate shower stall that includes access to an overhead locker. As one might expect from Nordhavn, a John Deere diesel will power the N475, specifically a 180 hp 4045AFM85-M2.

of festivals. The Spring Wine Festival, Anacortes Waterfront Festival, Kids-RBest Fest, and Anacortes Art Festival are a few notable ones. Beyond the festivals, there is always something going on in this boating town. March brings the Anacortes Salmon Derby. April is time for the Vintage Market, which features antique, vintage and repurposed treasures for home and garden. June brings Bark in The Park, where canines and their humans gather for a pet parade, demonstrations, games and more. The Fourth of July celebration begins with a town portrait, then a parade and music followed by fireworks over Fidalgo Bay at dusk. Also in July is Shipwreck Day, a garage sale on Commercial Avenue that stretches 10 city blocks. On the fourth Sunday of September Anacortes is over taken by more than 10,000 leather-clad bikers during the largest motorcycle run in the Pacific Northwest. There is Bier On The Pier, a brew and cider festival in October. The first weekend in December is the town’s Holiday Celebration, with a tree lighting, a parade, music and a gift show.

The Depot Plaza 12 is bustling on Saturday from May through October, as people stock up on fresh veggies, fruits, artisan cheeses, baked goods, craft items and more at the Anacortes Farmers Market. It has evolved into the Saturday gathering spot, with people meeting for breakfast or lunch and lingering to enjoy live entertainment. EXERCISE YOUR LEGS For a little exercise, hike up Cap Sante Head 13 on the northeast side of the marina for a stunning view of the marina and town beyond. First, there’s no one-size-fits-all answer, and there is no magical age limit on “geezer cruising,” as we lovingly refer to it. We don’t need to quit boating because of these and other challenges, but we need to compensate and do things a little differently. We all can adjust our cruising habits, implement commonsense changes that will reduce the high-risk safety issues for us, those aboard our boat, and other boats and boaters.

DOCTOR’S VISIT

CRUISING THROUGH RETIREMENT We call it “geezer cruising” and plan to do it for as long as we can. BY DEANE HISLOP

HOW OLD IS TOO OLD to enjoy the cruising lifestyle we love? Arlene and I relish exploring the waters of British Columbia with extended cruises (two- to four-month trips) during the summer and boating in Puget Sound and the San Juan Islands the balance of the year. We have been boaters for 45 years — the past 23 together. As we approach our 70s and endure through aching joints, my loss of hearing and balance, and Arlene’s weak ankles and knees, we seem to be asking ourselves how old is too old to cruise more often. Our discussion usually takes place while Easy Goin’ is hanging on the hook in a secluded cove and we’re sitting on the back deck enjoying the end of the day and absorbing the sights and sounds of the cruising life. We are not the only boaters asking the question. By 2030, the U.S. Census Bureau estimates one in five Americans will be 65 or older. The baby boomers driving this trend are well known for their determination to cruise off into the sunset, PNW-8

figuratively and, in this case, literally, but there are some hurdles, physical and mental, to be overcome. The American Medical Association (AMA) says individuals older than 60 typically need more than twice as much light to see under dim conditions as a 20-year-old. Past age 50, high-frequency sounds can drop, and more time is needed to react to stimuli. These inadequacies, combined with lost balance and strength, make it clear that cruising as we get older is not without challenge.

Older boaters with cruising plans should meet with their primary care provider to talk about their cruising plans and enlist the doctor’s support, as a good first step. Annual physical checkups are a good idea for geezer cruisers, to monitor their overall health condition and determine if they’re experiencing a high-risk trait or condition, such as forgetfulness, vision impairment, slow reaction time, unsteadiness, loss of hearing and so on. Understanding the severity of the condition and carrying out specific changes needed to compensate — new boating habits, altering the boat or repositioning gear — are big steps. One’s spouse and doctor can help monitor the condition for any progression or increased risk. Anyone who has ongoing prescriptions should request an extended supply, sometimes referred to as a vacation supply, to take on the boat. It’s also prudent to have an annual dental checkup. We should all want to push off the dock for an extended cruise with our teeth in good working order.

FIRST AID Anyone who has received his CPR training using Resusci-Annie would be well-served to take refresher training, since things have changed. First-aid training and a first-aid kit built with being far from emergency support in mind is a good idea.

BOAT CHOICE Easy Goin’ has an overall length of 40 feet, smaller than many of the other boats we see while cruising. For many people, it’s financially possible to have a larger boat as the years go by, but we are not convinced that “bigger is better” is necessarily

better. At its size, our boat is very maneuverable, which makes close-quarter operations — anchoring, docking, locking, mooring, passing through narrow channels — easier and less stressful. Its size also makes single-hand operation easier (if not easy), should it become necessary. We have Easy Goin’ outfitted with thrusters for easy docking and an electric windlass with controls at both helms. Not only does the windlass eliminate the heavy lifting associated with anchoring, but it allows us to get the boat stopped and settled before going forward to cleat off the rode. The boat has no long flights of steps, which makes tasks easier and increases safety. Making cruising easier with less risk of injury is very important. Something we would like to retrofit onto Easy Goin’ is an electric dinghy davit. It would take a lot less strength than hand-lifting the outboard and pulling the dinghy onto the transom. It would also enable Arlene to stow the dinghy if I was unable to.

WEATHER WINDOWS AND ROUTING As we’ve aged, we like to think we’re a little wiser; we make more of an effort to avoid rough passages than we used to. After retiring, our style of cruising is a little slower and less stressful, because we have the time and we’re not as agile as we once were. We’re more conservative in our choice of weather and tidal

windows and generally don’t move on weather windows that look iffy. It’s a matter of not exhausting ourselves and not risking injuries or equipment breakage/failure. Our mantra has become this: “Don’t push it, relax and enjoy.” We try to create routes with a little less daily mileage (40 miles is a long day) and try not to have multiple long days in a row. Once we arrive, we like to stay multiple days.

OTHER POSSIBLE ENABLERS We’ve learned a few ways to add safety, comfort and solid communication to our cruising routine: • Keep a notebook nearby, perhaps near the helm station, to jot down numbers, waypoints, reminders and weather reports. • If balance is an issue, certain exercises will improve core strength. Ask a doctor, physical therapist or trainer. • Captains should let their mate be their ears in difficult-to-hear situations. • For those difficult-to-hear situations, establish a system of hand signals, or purchase a pair of wireless headsets. • Make sure both members of the couple can operate the boat. • Older backs are prone to stiffness and soreness. Invest in high-quality mattress for the berth. • Keep a good pair of binoculars handy. We have two pairs — his and hers. • Add extra handholds for people to grab on a pitching boat. • Add safety lines, rails or higher rails. • Invest in high-quality prescription sunglasses with UV protection. • Wear a PFD.

We love cruising and don’t think there is a particular age at which people should plan to stop. Perhaps a couple’s style of cruising may change, the boat may change, the locations may be different, but the important factor is to figure out what works and do everything possible to avoid injuries that could place serious limitations on mobility. We plan to enjoy the cruising life as long as possible, and we will know when it’s time.

THREE’S CERTAINLY NOT A CROWD The name Fred Hall reverberates throughout March, as three outdoor shows turn Southern and Central California into a boating and outdoor experience.

LAST YEAR THE FRED HALL experience, which was already a longestablished presence on the Southern California show scene, expanded its reach — numbers-wise and geographically — with the addition of the Fred Hall Central Valley Sports Show in Bakersfield. While a third show certainly keeps show planners on their toes, it’s a boon for many folks who might not have made the trip to Long Beach or Del Mar for the other two shows. The Bakersfield show has a 40-year history, mostly as an outdoors and RV show, and the Fred Hall folks have kept that vibe intact while bringing boats into the show in a big way. Instead of one dealer having the boating category exclusive, there will be dozens and dozens of boats from various dealers and manufacturers. Plus, given the Fred Hall legacy as premier fishing shows, an entire hall will be dedicated to the category. And let’s not forget the two longstanding Fred Hall shows, the ones SEAMAGAZINE.COM MARCH 2018

in Long Beach and at the Del Mar Fairgrounds in San Diego County, that are now guided by the second generation of the Hall family and owned by the Duncan McIntosh Co. Since 1946 the Long Beach show has been the go-to Southern California show for anglers, hunters and boaters, and while the Del Mar show didn’t debut until 30 years after Long Beach, this year marks its 41st run, so its history is long too. Between the three shows, thousands of exhibitors will display wares that appeal to all manner of outdoor types. Fishing and hunting equipment will be so ubiquitous that nobody should leave the shows thinking, “You know, I wish they’d had product X, Y or Z.” If the show doesn’t have it, it might not exist. In addition, anyone looking for an education can get it at the Fred Hall shows. Over the course of the 13 days that encompass all three events, more than 600 seminars will be conducted. Pretty much every hour an educational opportunity is taking place, mostly free of charge. Want to learn how to cook your catch, maintain a reel, choose the right rod-and-reel combo, fish from a kayak, catch a specific species of fish that has managed to elude you? Then pay attention to the seminar schedule, because chances are good the topic will be addressed.

In addition to the dozens of boats on display indoors, Hobie offers on-water demo rides at Fred Hall Long Beach in the Rainbow Lagoon.

All three shows are presented by Progressive Insurance. The Central Valley Sports Show takes place March 2-4, the Long Beach Show runs from March 7-11, and the San Diego Show at the Del Mar Fairgrounds runs from March 22-25. See the full schedule, find dates, times and

SO MUCH TO DO While the sheer number of exhibits and seminars and workshops is enough to keep attendees busy for hours, the shows

have even more going on — something for everyone in the family. Two of the most memorable activities involve sharp objects and the carefully choreographed use of said objects. This year, attendees of all three Fred Hall shows can witness the Paul Bunyan Lumberjack Show and Jack Dagger. The Paul Bunyan Show consists of professional lumberjacks competing in axe throwing, underhand chopping, chainsaw carving and other activities. Jack Dagger mixes humor and precision knife throwing — the former aimed at the crowd, the latter aimed at an assistant — in a show that should entertain the family. For the kids, don’t miss the casting contests, air gun demonstrations, face painting and the Mammoth Lakes Kids Fish Free Trout Pond. Kids love dogs (adults do, too), and there are a couple of interesting events featuring our canine friends. The Ultimate Air Dogs will entertain at Long Beach and Del Mar, and the Dock Dogs West Coast Challenge will occur during the Bakersfield show. Some of the more adult-friendly attractions include the Hobie Kayak on-water demo rides and the Custom Rod Builders Depot, both at Long Beach. Costa Sporting Chef Café cooking demonstrations will take place at all three shows, and anglers can take their turn in the Daiwa Bass Tank. At the Bakersfield show, attendees can watch the sand drag races and check out the Super Cruise vintage car show (Saturday).

ASK A BROKER

BROKERAGE ADVICE

MARCH’S QUESTION:

When the time comes to arrange a survey on a boat I’m interested in buying, how should I proceed and what should I expect — of the seller, my broker and the surveyor? FOR THE ANSWER to this month’s question, we consulted the always

helpful and informative “Buying a Used Boat” booklet from the California Yacht Brokers Association. It’s available to download at cyba.info, for anyone who’s interested. The relevant section for us is called Step Four: Getting a Sea Trial and Survey. The seller has accepted your offer on a boat. You’ve lined up your financing. Now it’s time for a sea trial to see how this boat handles and performs in the water. The seller usually provides the sea trial. Your broker will usually go with you on the sea trial. A survey is your opportunity to find out any problems, see if everything works properly and determine the boat’s condition. Buyers pay for the surveys and for hauling the boat out of the water for inspection. If an unforeseen problem shows up during the survey, you might be able to negotiate it

into the final price. Use a marine surveyor. Don’t necessarily use a surveyor the seller has recommended — and don’t rely on a survey report from the seller. The report might have been written before certain problems turned up. Always use an independent surveyor, and always survey the boat in and out of the water. Marine surveyors inspect the boat in your interest and the interests of your lender and insurance company. Often your lender will designate a marine surveyor, and brokers have lists of marine surveyors

approved by lenders and marine insurance companies. You can also find marine surveyors by calling the Society of Accredited Marine Surveyors (SAMS) at (800) 344-9077, and the National Association of Marine Surveyors (NAMS) at (800) 822-6267. One caveat: California has no occupational licensing standards for marine surveyors. You should also ask an independent marine mechanic to inspect the engine. We recommend that you attend the survey to learn firsthand what condition the boat is in. It’s the best time to ask the surveyor questions. What to do with your sea trial and survey results? • One big reason for the survey is to find out the current condition and market value of the boat you want to buy.

• If the results reveal flaws and problems, the sea trial and survey may give you the opportunity to back out of a contract without penalty — or to negotiate repairs on the boat. • But be advised: If you’re buying a boat at a rock-bottom price, or if the seller is in distress and is selling for below his market price, the sea trial and survey will not give you leverage to negotiate. The seller might not have funds for repairs and is selling as is, where is. Your broker usually gives copies of the survey report to your lender and insurance carrier for their review. They’ll want to know the boat’s condition, its replacement value and the surveyor’s determination of the boat’s market value. Keep in mind, though, surveys are no guarantee against hidden or undetected defects.
