What happened to Mary Celeste

The story of the Mary Celeste , an American-registered merchant brigantine, began on Nov. 7, 1872, when the 282-ton brigantine set sail from the New York Harbor traveling to Genoa, Italy. On board was the ship’s captain, Benjamin S. Briggs, his wife, Sarah, and their 2-year-old daughter, Sophia, along with eight crewmembers.

On Dec. 4, 1872, the ship was discovered adrift and deserted in the Atlantic Ocean 400 miles off the Azores Islands by the British brigantine Dei Gratia.

Besides several feet of water in the hold and a missing lifeboat, the ship was in seaworthy condition—the last entry in her log dated ten days before her discovery.

She was found well stocked with six months’ worth of provisions, her cargo of alcohol was intact, and the captain and crew’s personal belongings were undisturbed. However, no one on board was ever seen or heard from again.

Mary Celeste was built on Spencer’s Island, Nova Scotia, and launched under British registration as Amazon in 1861. She was transferred to American ownership and registered in 1868 when she acquired her new name after a series of mishaps, including her first captain’s sudden illness and death and a collision with another ship in the English Channel. After that, she sailed with little purpose until her 1872 voyage. Following her recovery, an investigation into whether to grant payment by its insurers to the Dei Gratia’s crew for salvaging the

“ghost ship” found no evidence of foul play. The court’s officers considered various possibilities of foul play, including mutiny by Mary Celeste’s crew, piracy by the Dei Gratia crew or others, and conspiracy to carry out insurance or salvage fraud. No convincing evidence supported these theories, but unresolved suspicions led to a relatively low salvage award.

The inconclusive results from the hearings fostered continued speculation as to the nature of the mystery, and the story has repeatedly been confused by false detail and fantasy. For example, one of history’s most famous maritime mysteries unfolds the question: Why would a skilled captain such as Briggs, or his crew, abandon a fully stocked seaworthy ship? Evolving hypotheses over the years have ranged from mutiny and pirate attack to assault by a giant octopus or sea monster, while the more scientifically minded suggested an explosion caused by fumes from the 1,700 barrels of crude alcohol in the ship’s hold.

After the hearings, Mary Celeste continued service under new owners. However, in 1885, her captain intentionally wrecked her off the coast of Haiti in an effort to achieve insurance fraud.

The story of her 1872 abandonment has been recounted and dramatized in documentaries, novels, plays, and films. The name of the ship has become a byword for unexplained desertion. In 1884, Arthur Conan Doyle wrote “J. Habakuk Jephson’s Statement,” a short story based on the mystery, but spelled the vessel’s name as Marie Celeste . His story suggested that an ex-slave sought vengeance on the ship.

Nautical Miles and Knots

Speed and distance on the water are very different than on land. Miles and miles per hour do not exist at sea. When you travel on a vessel across the ocean, a nautical mile is the measurement used to determine the distance traveled through the water. A nautical mile is slightly longer than a mile on land, equaling 1.1508 land-measured (or statute) miles. The nautical mile was determined by the Earth’s longitude and latitude coordinates, with one nautical mile equaling one minute of latitude.

But what is the benefit of using a different measurement system for marine navigation? Using latitude and longitude co-

ordinates is more functional for long-distance travel, where the curvature of the Earth becomes a factor in accurate measurement. Nautical charts use latitude and longitude, so it’s much easier for mariners to measure distance with nautical miles. Air and space travel also use latitude and longitude for navigation and nautical miles to measure distance.

The word “mile” might prompt you to question if there is a “nautical kilometer” as well— there’s not. The international nautical mile is used worldwide. The measurement was officially set at exactly 1.852 kilometers in 1929 by the International Hydrographic Organization. The U.S. and the United Kingdom used slightly different measurements after that, but later the U.S. adopted the inter-

national nautical mile in 1954 and the U.K. in 1970.

On the other hand, knots are used to measure speed. One knot equals one nautical mile per hour or approximately 1.15 statute mph. The term knot dates back to the 17th century when sailors measured their ship’s speed using a “common log.” The common log was a rope with knots at regular intervals attached to a piece of wood shaped like a piece of pizza. Mariners would drop the wood piece into the water and let it float freely behind the ship for a specific amount of time. They often timed this with an hourglass, and when the time was up, they would count the knots between the ship and the piece of wood, and that number gauged their speed.

State Designation Protects and Enhances California’s Wild Trout Fisheries and Provides Special Angling Opportunities for the

Public

The California Department of Fish and Wildlife is observing the 50th anniversary of the first designated “Wild Trout Waters” in the state, an innovative wild trout conservation and management routine at the vanguard of the nation’s modern environmental movement of the 1960s and 1970s— a designation still benefitting California anglers today.

In 1971, the California Fish and Game Commission adopted a Wild Trout Policy to provide the designation of “aesthetically pleasing and environmentally productive” streams and lakes to be managed exclusively for wild trout, where the trout populations are managed with appropriate regulations to be “largely unaffected by the angling process,” according to the CDFW.

The nonprofit, San Francisco-based wild trout conservation organization was formed the same year. CDFW’s Wild Trout Program, called the Heritage and Wild Trout Program, was created to protect and enhance the state’s wild trout fisheries while preserving wild trout fishing for the public. The program was born when the national consciousness began acclimating to negative impacts on natural resources, including population declines among fish, wildlife, and plant species.

In 1972, the Commission assigned 17 streams as Wild Trout Waters and has added to those waters every year since. Under the California Fish and Game Code, the Commission must add at least 25 miles of stream and at least one lake to the program annually.

“This anniversary is a huge milestone,” said Curtis Knight, executive director of California Trout, in a press

release from Oct. 24. “CalTrout has been proud to promote and partner with CDFW on the Heritage and Wild Trout Program since its inception. We believe this program was progressive and cutting-edge when it was established in the 1970s. Today it has evolved and continues to be one of the country’s most effective fish water policies.”

The North Fork Mokelumne River and Silver Lake in Tulare County were both designated Wild Trout Waters in early October.

Since its founding, the program has focused on managing and enhancing California’s wild, self-sustaining trout populations. The program was expanded in 1988 to include conserving native trout species within their historical ranges and renamed the Heritage and Wild Trout Program. In 2003, the Heritage Trout Challenge was launched to urge anglers to explore waters that support native trout species. Anglers that catch any six of the state›s qualifying ten native trout species from their historic drainages are recognized by CDFW with a personalized award for their accomplishments.

Over the years, CDFW’s Heritage and Wild Trout Program has had far-reaching impacts on fisheries management and angling culture by:

• Raising awareness and education of California’s native trout species.

• Driving monitoring and formal management plans for trout.

• Fostering a catch-and-release fishing ethic that has become standard practice to protect self-sustaining wild trout and other fisheries.

• Managing for genetic integrity by avoiding stocking hatchery trout into designated waters and working to prevent hybridization.

• Serving as an example for other states to promote fishing and conservation of their native trout species and catch-and-release fishing. For example, the 12-state Western Native Trout Challenge was modeled after CDFW›s Heritage Trout Challenge.

Lawsuit Seeks to Protect Humpback Whales

SAN FRANCISCO — On Oct. 27, the Center for Biological Diversity announced they had sued NOAA Fisheries to force protection for endangered Pacific humpback whales from entanglements in California drift gillnets. According to federal reports, an estimated 12 Pacific humpbacks were caught in the California drift gillnet fishery over the last two fishing seasons.

The lawsuit noted that the fishery’s harm to endangered humpback whales violates the Endangered Species Act. The fishery uses mile-long hanging nets

I recently reviewed my boat insurance policy and came across some troubling language that I was hoping you could explain. The policy defines the phrase “caused by” to mean “any loss that is contributed to, made worse by, or in any way results from that peril. The policy then goes on to exclude any loss “caused by” wear and tear, gradual deterioration, galvanic corrosion, lack of maintenance, fiberglass osmosis, blistering or marine life. This definition of “caused by” appears to be an attempt to exclude the entire boat from a claim arising from the failure of a single part. As I read this, the failure of a corroded thru-hull fitting could sink the boat, and there would be no coverage at all for the entire loss. How would this actually work?

ANSWER: First, I want to complement our reader for actually reading his insurance policy and getting into the definitions that are set out in the policy. The coverage provided by a marine insurance policy will vary from company to company, so it really is important to understand your coverage.

Marine insurance policies tend to exclude more casualties than they actually cover. I would need to see our reader’s entire policy and review the casualty in question to render a solid opinion, but I’m happy to offer some general

First, it may be hard to believe but it is likely that the entire claim would be denied in the example provided by our reader. Recreational marine insurance policies are generally “all risk” policies, which means they cover everything ex cept claims that are expressly excluded. T he exclusions tend to be lengthy. The language cited in his example is pretty broad but not uncommon. The hypothetical ex ample about a corroded thru-hull is on p o int and a good illustration. Under his policy, corrosion damage is exclud ed along with any damage “caused by” t he corrosion. If the boat sank because of a corroded thru-hull fitting, the claim would clearly be excluded under the lan guage of his policy.

The cause of the loss may not be immediately clear, and this is where the boat owner may find some relief on a disputed claim. “Grey areas” can arise when evaluating policy exclusions. A common complication is where the component in question failed because of a “latent de fect.” A latent defect is a problem that ca nnot be discovered under a reasonable and prudent inspection. Common la tent defect failures include components t hat are hidden from view or that show no external signs of pending failure and

were thus undiscoverable under a rea sonable inspection. Latent defect cov erage under a marine insurance policy may exclude coverage for the failed com ponent itself if the loss was caused by a n excluded peril but provide coverage for anything else that was damaged by the failure.

Evidence of the failure will need to be collected by a marine insurance investi gator so the adjuster can determine the c ause of the loss. In the event of a dis puted claim, I always recommend that a b oat owner retain a marine surveyor who is experienced in claim investiga tion before he or she hires a lawyer. The b oat owner will then have his own in vestigator who will work with the insurance company investigator to determine t he cause of the loss. Be prepared for the investigation to take a while to com plete. It may require forensic experts, such as metallurgists or accident reconstructionist to evaluate all of the evi dence. Yjis will take some time and it m ay be an expensive undertaking, but in the face of a denial of a large claim it will be worth it.

Marine insurance claims often in volve an extensive investigation to de termine the cause of the loss. But boat ow ners will save time and money if they know and understand the coverage pro visions of their policy before a claim a r ises.

As the lawsuit reported, NOAA Fisheries failed to sufficiently investigate the fishery’s impact on the humpback populations listed under the Endangered Species Act in 2016.

To remedy these legal violations, the Center recommends that the Service close the area in Southern California where two humpback whales were recently entangled and confirm the fishery is not threatening the species’

continued existence.

According to the Center, fishing gear entanglements are a leading threat to endangered migratory humpbacks along the West Coast, where 48,521 square nautical miles were designated as critical habitats for the species in April 2021.

Just because the leaves change colors, and the lake begins freezing doesn’t mean the fishing season has paused; it’s just becoming a new ball game. Here is a guide on where to fish, what you’ll catch, and how to adjust your gear and wardrobe to have a successful fishing trip at Big Bear Lake.

BIG BEAR — Winter doesn’t have to mean that the fishing season is postponed—it’s just going to be different. By making a few adjustments to your strategy and gear, you’ve entered into a whole new fishing season. Fishing in Big Bear is year-round as long as the lake hasn’t completely frozen over.

Big Bear is a top-rated tourist destination and brings in a lot of visitors during the winter months for skiing, snowboarding, and cozy cabin stays. But Big Bear is also a great fishing destination. So even though you don’t think of fishing when you think of winter, winter fishing in the mountains is a fun and scenic experience.

Big Bear Lake is the most recognized of all the lakes in Big Bear and is stocked with Rainbow trout, Panfish such as bluegill, pumpkinseed, and crappie, Channel catfish, and small and largemouth bass. Remember that walking, sitting, or otherwise being on the lake ice is strictly forbidden and will result in a fine.

“The lake usually freezes over sometime around Christmas or New Year’s,” said Scott Eberhard, a master guide for Cantrell Guide Service, in an email from Nov. 1. “That said, most of the winter, there are areas of the lake that will be ice-free. [During] many Winters, much of the lake will remain fishable (ice free)

Because the weather temperatures drop so low, you’ll have the best luck with biting on days when the water temperature is above 40 degrees. This means you’ll have the most success towards the middle of the day when the temperatures are higher. It’s also smart to avoid fishing after several nights have hit below-freezing temperatures. Also, rain is a good sign for anglers. It stirs up the fish’s food allowing more potential for bites.

Anglers are most likely to catch trout. Big Bear Lake serves as a first-rate trout fishery habitat because its depths allow the fish to thrive, even in the summer heat, and they continue to look for food throughout the winter months. One of the best ways to track this healthy trout population is by downrigging deeper waters and trolling leadcore lines at three colors or more. The lake’s west end tends to see most of the action. A Game Chair is the Best Seat in the House

Using a game chair can be the key to a successful catch for big game anglers, but only if you use it properly and know what you’re doing. It takes precise adjustments, good fighting technique, and pacing to succeed. Here is how you do that.

Game chairs, also called fighting chairs, offer a significant advantage over stand-up techniques. They allow for bet ter control of all major muscle groups us ed when fishing, especially the most powerful muscle group – the leg muscles. However, correctly setting up and using a game or fighting chair is important as it can strongly impact the angler’s comfort, efficiency, and overall enjoyment when tackling larger gamefish.

Stand-up fishing has its place amongst good anglers, and it can also be a lot of fun, but if you’re serious about bat tling bigger fish, a proper game chair is a must, specifically at night or in harsh sea conditions.

Also, with a well-balanced technique and a good bucket harness, there will be less fatigue on the angler during pro longed fights with that 300-pound tuna yo u’re fighting against. It is essential, however, to understand that your chair needs to be set up and used correctly from the get-go.

Footrest

Every modern, quality game chair should have an adjustable, removable footrest. It should be adjusted so that when you are hooked up to a fish at full drag or have reached the top of your reeling stance, you are standing with a

straight leg. It is crucial that your body is never over your toes.

Wait to adjust the footrest after bat tling your fish. Any time you are strapped into a harness with upwards of 30-pluspounds of drag, you should concentrate on the task. Altering the footrest at this game stage could cause you to lose your balance.

The footrest must be out far enough, so your body is the pivot point. Too close, and you feel like you will fall forward when the rod is loaded. Also, because there are more than a few moving parts to get your heavy-tackle fight adequate ly organized, the footrest may need to be readjusted after you factor in the buck et harness and the length of your straps.

Bucket Harness

The bucket harness sits under the an gler’s backside, allowing them to stand in the chair and use their body weight and leg muscles to pull back on the rod tip. This is more energy efficient than pull ing on the rod and resting with your arms and upper body. When using heavy tack le, you must be directly connected to the rod and reel. The weight is too unman ageable, with a 500-plus-pound animal pulling you around. Using a chair with out a bucket harness causes you to use your arms as you would with light tackle, and you’ll find yourself quickly tired from pumping the rod up and down.

Some buckets are fitted with chains, some with ropes, and others have nylon straps. Modifying these straps so that you are standing with your knees locked keeps you comfortably attached to the fish and tightly seated in the bucket, giv ing you stability. This lets you battle the fish by leaning back to lift the rod and standing up as you wind down to gather the line. Then, you’ll want to fine-tune the bucket straps to benefit your best stance.

Next, adjust the straps so that when the rod is fully loaded, you have complete control with your center of gravity toward the rear.

What to ask Before Buying a Boat

Buying a boat is a big time and financial commitment. Whether you’re a first-time buyer or are considering purchasing a new or used boat, here are nine questions to ask the seller and several tips for the buyer to use during the process.

Don’t make a purchase just because it seems like a deal— you might be buying a lemon. So if you’re considering buying a boat, think about asking these questions before swip ing your card to ensure you get the best deal possible.

1. How many hours has the engine logged?

If you’re buying a second-hand boat, it’s important to know and consider how many hours the engine has logged. If

you’re buying a boat that was made after 1990, it will have an hour meter. Much like the miles on a car, the hours on an en gine are the best way to know how hard th at boat has worked in its time. For a boat that has been well maintained, it also tells you the next time the boat needs to be brought in for maintenance. Both inboard and outboard marine motors are dependable for an average of 1500 hours. After that point, they become undepend able, and you don’t want to be five miles out when they decide to break down. Rec reational boats use between 75 and 150 hours per year. So, using 100 hours as an average, a ten-year-old boat with 1000 hours on the engine should have plenty of life left.

2. Do you have the boat’s service logs?

This is another strong question to ask before buying a pre-owned boat. You should ask the owners if they kept a re cord of all the services performed on the boat to know how the boat was taken care of. It might not be a deal breaker if the owner didn’t keep track of the services, but it may be indicative that the owner didn’t keep up with the maintenance, and the boat may be in poor condition. Regu lar servicing for any vessel is essential be cause it keeps up with minor issues that could turn into significant, costly repairs. Therefore, when the owner gets the boat serviced regularly, they extend the boat’s lifetime.

3. Is there a warranty and is it transferable?

This question applies to whether you’re buying a new or used boat. New boats usually have a warranty that protects against manufacturer issues and minor repairs. When buying a used boat, you want to ensure that the warranty is transferrable, most of which are. Re gardless, boats are a lot of work, so hav ing the cushion of a warranty is a sigh of relief when something breaks, and the manufacturer deems it not to be a de fect. In addition, an extended warranty can cover the cost of that repair. If there is a warranty, ask what it covers. Typical ly, a manufacturer will give a new boat ow ner a warranty covering things like

steering systems, electrical and plumb ing systems, and other buildings they’re responsible for. These warranties usual ly last for a year or two. Confirm that you understand the warranty when buying a new or used boat. This will help save you money in repairs and give you an idea of what issues to watch for.

4. Why are you selling the boat?

When you ask a boat owner why they’re selling their boat, be wary of ge neric answers like, “Oh, I just don’t have time for to anymore.” It’s a good idea to inspect the vessel thoroughly to ensure they’re not selling it for more reasons than lack of free time. Check the hull for any signs of damage, like cracks in the fi berglass. Any crack larger than two inch es means problems and lots of money in repairs. Also, inspect the belts for wear and any sign of mold or mildew. While you might save money going to a private seller for a pre-owned boat, as a first-time buyer, it is wise to go to a trusted dealer ship with a proven track record of reliable vessels to buy a boat.

5. What is this boat made of?

It’s important to know what materi als the boat you are potentially purchas ing is made of, so you can be prepared for

what kind of wear and tear and mainte nance to expect. Boat hulls are typical ly constructed of five types of materials, each with pros and cons.

Ferro- Cement

Ferro-cement is the cheapest option for hull construction, but it has its fair share of problems.

Ferro-cement is a highly versatile type of reinforced concrete. Mortar fills out the spaces between a thin, reinforced concrete mesh structure. It’s generally less expensive because it’s easy to build, doesn’t weigh much, and the cost of ma terials is low. When it comes to hull con struction, you should avoid Ferro-cement hu lls. Unless the manufacturer lays the cement in one attempt, you’ll have weak spots that can let in water, causing the reinforcement to rust. In addition, boats made of Ferro-cement can be challeng ing to insure.

Wood

The oldest material used in boat con struction is wood. Wood is still a pop ular material for those who build their ow n boats. But there’s a risk of inviting wood-boring marine life directly into your hull when you use it. There are still tons of wooden boats sailing the seas today, and they’re worth checking out if you’re interested in a low-cost boat. But beware, they can be expensive to keep in seaworthy condition. Fiberglass may be the most popular material used to build boats and yachts today. Fiberglass boats are thin but heavy. As a result, they pro vide a lot of resilience out on the water. In addition, the wind doesn’t usually cause a fiberglass boat to buffet as quickly, so they drift with less speed and more accuracy.

Steel

Steel is another popular material used in hull construction. Steel is solid and only needs a new coat of paint every year to prevent rust. But it is also very heavy and will require a lot of towing power to get it to the water.

Boat Buying

Hulls made from aluminum are less expensive than fiberglass and much light er. As a result, they’re easier to launch at the ramp and easier to tow with a small vehicle. In addition, you don’t have to wax the gel coat, so aluminum hulls require less maintenance. And instead of crack ing on impact, they dent.

6. Can I take it for a sea trial?

A sea trial is a test drive. You use this time to see how seaworthy the boat is or if it’s a comfortable fit for you. If you’re buying a used boat, it may be a good idea to enroll in the guidance of a marine sur veyor. A marine surveyor is a professional who can give you information about the boat on the water that you might typical ly miss or not consider. If the boat is on a trailer, inspect it and give it a few thumps with the bottom of your fist to check if the hull is in firm condition. Pay atten tion to the sound and feel of the boat in every type of movement, such as revers ing, speeding up, doing slalom maneu vers and full circle turns, and docking. Not every scratch and crack needs to be a deal breaker. You can use those blem ishes to negotiate the price.

7. What does owning a boat cost?

This question is for you. As a first-time boat owner, the seller can help you un derstand the annual cost of owning that boat , or you can research your own. What are you going to do with your boat? Will

you need to travel with it? Consider the cost of boat insurance, storage, slip fees, gas, maintenance, etc.

8. How has the boat been stored?

Storage plays a very important role in boat maintenance. Wet boat storage means the boat has been stored outside and is helpful for an owner who likes to hop in a get going. However, storing in the water has its issues. If the water gets too cold and freezes, it can severe ly damage the hull and external features. It allows for rust, marine life, and gener al wear and tear to attack the boat con stantly. In addition, the owner doesn’t get a chance to clean, paint, or maintain the boat when it spends all its time in the water. Dry storage is the better option for storage, especially during the off-sea son. Dry storage allows the owner to in spect the areas of the boat that are typ ically submerged, making maintenance so much easier. Generally, boats stored in dry storage have less wear and tear.

9. Are there financing options available?

Lastly, know your financing options. Lots of dealerships have on-site financ ing that can help you get a good deal on a loan for a new or used boat. Also, if you have a trade-in, you can factor in how much you need for a down payment. Fi nally, if you fall in love with a boat that’s out of your budget, financing options are a great way to work around that.

However, once you are connected to a fish, the entire bucket as sembly will extend one-half to 1 inch, so se tting the straps on the verge of being slightly tight should be perfect once put under load.

Getting to the Chair

Once the fish is hooked and taking drag, you will need to move the rod from the rod holder to the chair. (If you are tournament fishing under International Game Fish Association rules, you must do this alone, with no help from the crew.)

Prepare yourself for not only the weight of the rod itself but also the amount of drag on the fish. If you slowly pull back the drag to a reasonable amount, you can easily lift the rod and bring it to the chair. The best way to remove the rod from the rod holder is by going straight out at the same angle.

A safety line should be attached to the reel seat, so be aware of it as you maneu ver the rod to the chair. It helps to put one leg over the gimbal and on the opposite side of the footrest, then set the rod butt in the gimbal, positioning your rear end in the bucket and your feet on the footrest. While holding on to the rod, put the strap clips on the reel and reengage the drag back to strike unless otherwise di rected. Just because your partner has grabbed the leader doesn’t mean your job is done. As soon as they take a wrap, back the drag off in case they have to let go. You don’t want the fighting drag to be en gaged while the fish is on the leader. The line pulling tight at full drag could rip the hook from the fish, forcing it to fly back at the cockpit.

It would help if you also watched for any slack line or leader that could get tipwrapped (little knots of braided line af fixing themselves around the tip of your rod when you get aggressive with the rod tip) or tangled around your crewmem ber’s feet, neck, or body. Reel in the slack as they wire the fish until there is noth ing left to reel or the swivel reaches the rod tip.

Having the bucket harness and the chair work together harmoniously allows you to fight a big fish effectively.

There is a wide variety of game chairs available on the market. Unfortunately, some of the cheaper options available be come more of a hindrance rather than an as sistant for catching bigger fish. More expensive designs certainly are popular options used in many of the world’s fish ing hotspots.

As long as a good quality chair is as sembled and positioned correctly and good technique is used, your game chair can become an essential, satisfying, and valuable tool.

GIVE THANKS SAIL- SAN PEDRO BAY

SAN PEDRO — On Nov. 19, the Los Angeles Maritime Institute will host the annual November event, Give Thanks Sail, which is part of their monthly series of community sails; each month has a different theme. The event will take place from 4-6:30 p.m., where the tall brigantine ship Exy Johnson will set sail for a two-hour journey where guests can tour and explore the ship while out on the water.

The event is a fun sunset sail, and guests are encouraged to bring their own Hollywood Bowl-style picnic with the beverages of their choice. LAMI does not provide food or drinks besides portable water for guests who bring a refillable water bottle.

It is not a Thanksgiving celebration per se. However, LAMI likes to hold a sail close to Thanksgiving week for people who have visiting family and friends in town looking for a unique experience.

Guests are encouraged to become active crew members and even assist in sailing the boat, but they can also sit back, relax, and enjoy.

“Our ships are living, breathing STEM machines,” said Alice Taylor, Director of Sales and Marketing for LAMI, in an email from Oct. 28. “We have a separate eco-education sail every month as part of our Explore the Coast/Explora la Costa series. This November, community sail and all our community sails are viewed as more of a recreational activity and introduction to our ships and our programs.”

This event and the community sails that LAMI holds each month are mini-fundraisers for their program, TopSail Youth Program, which is celebrating its 30th anniversary as a local non-profit organization. LAMI has served over 120,000 young people in that time, helping people on career paths they might not have considered before and creating lifelong sailors and

lovers of the ocean.

The event will take place where the ships are docked. The ships are docked at the West Harbor development in San Pedro, the former Ports O’ Call location now under development. The dock is at Berth 78 next to the San Pedro Fish Market Restaurant. There is plenty of free parking near the dock. The street address in front of the dock is 1142 Nagoya Way, San Pedro, CA 90731.

Holiday Regatta (Dec. 3-4)

The Santa Barbara Yacht Club will host the Holiday Regatta on Dec. 3-4. The Holiday Regatta is one of four events from the Challenge Cup Series. Diesel Engine Oil Changes and Oil Filters

Paramount to the Engine’s Life

Ahoy sailors, last time we discussed how to read a nautical chart. This time we will be discussing the importance of changing the oil in your diesel engine and the oil filters that are very crucial for a long healthy engine life. When swapping out engine oil and filters, consider these tips. Next week we will discuss ideas for boat interior designs for those looking to refurbish their boat.

Because diesel engines generate a con siderable amount of soot, they are hard on oil. If you aren’t conditioned to mon itoring how fast the oil turns black after being changed, you might be surprised.

Soot is a natural by-product of the in ternal combustion. Soot is why diesel en gine oil turns black, sometimes only after a few miles. When it becomes excessive, it can thicken the viscosity, leave deposits on wearing components, and ultimate ly clog a filter or, worse, an oil passage. When soot thickens the oil, it makes it more difficult for oil to flow into tight tol erances, especially when cold.

Ne w oil is reinforced with additives that help avoid this deterioration to an extent. However, acid formation is the most crucial driver of oil changes, which is offset by a base additive that neutral izes the acid. Oil analysis calculates this acid-neutralizing ability as the total base number or TBN. Most new oil starts with a TBN from eight to ten, and as acid pro

duction is offset, that number falls. So you’ll know it’s time for an oil change when that number hits 2.5.

Technically, oil changes should be driven by this figure. However, unless you are equipped to carry out an oil analysis, which is strongly recommended, you have no idea of your oil’s condition. So instead, replacing it based on engine hours or the calendar is best. For example, some oil requires changing every 150 hours or six months, while other oils allow for as many as 450 hours or annual replacement.

Of course, the oil you use must meet or exceed the specification in your engine owner’s manual. The oil used in diesel en gines has an American Petroleum Insti tute-designated C prefix, as opposed to the oil used with gasoline engines, which has an S prefix. The C prefix is followed by a second letter indicating the additive

package type.

As a boat owner, you must also use the weight of oil that your engine manufac turer appoints. For example, this may in clude a 15W-40 or a straight 30 weight. Bu t, again, stay consistent, and avoid mixing letters or weights.

Also, oil filters are just as important as the oil itself. Quality and construction run the scope, so don’t be frugal. Usually, you can’t go wrong using the engine man ufacturer’s brand, but these can run more costly than common retail brands readily available at auto-parts stores.

It’s important to ensure the area around the filter is clean before and after removing the old filter, and essen tial to remove the old gasket with the fil ter. An old gasket will not make a prop er seal with a new filter. It can squirt out the entire contents of the crankcase very

quickly.

Most sail auxiliary engines have a drain hose attached to the bottom of the oil pan, where an oil pump can be con nected. Some sailors prefer the manu al-vacuum variety. To pump efficiently, engine oil should be warm but can be handled at a manageable operating tem perature. Upon completion, make sure the drain hose cap is reinstalled. You’ll need two wrenches for this—one to hold the hex base nut and another to turn the cap nut.

La stly, refill the engine to the full mark on the dipstick, run the engine for about 30 seconds, turn it off, wait a minute for the oil to run entirely into the crankcase, recheck the dipstick, and add oil, if neces sary to top off. Then you’re all set!

The CDFW Restricts Recreational Crab Traps and More to Protect From Whale Entanglement

The California Department of Fish and Wildlife announced on Oct. 28 that the recreational take of Dungeness crab using crab traps was temporarily restricted statewide until the season opened on Nov. 5. The decision was a result of the presence of humpback and blue whales and the potential for entanglement from trap gear. Recreational take of Dungeness crab by other methods, including hoop nets and crab snares, was not affected by the temporary trap restriction, and was allowed statewide as of Nov. 5.

However, the deployment and use of crab traps in any recreational crab fishery, including rock crab, is temporarily restricted in all fishing zones until lifted by the CDFW Director. CDFW is also reminding recreational crabbers to implement best practices, as described in the Best Practices Guide.

The commercial Dungeness crab fishery south of the Sonoma/Mendocino county line was scheduled to open on Nov. 15 in fishing zones three through six. However, the season opener has been delayed in those zones due to high numbers of humpback whales being present and the heightened potential for entanglement.

“Based on recent surveys, large aggregations of humpbacks whales continue to forage in California coastal waters and allowing the use of crab traps would

increase the risk of an entanglement,” said CDFW Director Charlton H. Bonham in a press release form Oct. 28. “We will continue to work with both the recreational and commercial Dungeness crab fisheries to protect whales and sea turtles while striving to maximize fishing opportunity. We appreciate the ongoing commitment by the fleet and the California Dungeness Crab Fishing Gear Working Group to protect these incredible animals. These partnerships will continue to shape the future of both fisheries and we look forward to continuing the important work of providing fishing opportunity in the coming weeks.”

Before coming to this conclusion, CDFW worked with a wide range of scientific partners, researchers, agencies, and the California Dungeness Crab Fishing Gear Working Group to collect and combine information regarding the presence of humpback whales, blue whales, and leatherback sea turtles across each fishing zone. As a result, aerial and vessel-based surveys show collections of humpbacks, and several blue whales are present statewide. Therefore, under triggers established as part of the Risk Assessment and Mitigation Program regulations for the commercial fishery and recreational Dungeness crab fishery, the CDFW Director must enforce

a management action for these fishing zones to reduce marine life entanglement risk.

The CDFW has stated that it anticipates that the following risk assessment will occur on or before Nov. 23.

Then the Director will re-evaluate the temporary recreational crab trap restriction and commercial fishery delay in fishing zones three through six, as well as the need for any management actions for

the commercial fishery in fishing zones one and two. That risk assessment is expected to report the potential for a statewide commercial fishery opener on Dec. 1 and the possibility of modifying the recreational trap restriction.

LOS CABOS — The last two tournaments in the 6th annual Bisbee’s tournaments series, the Black & Blue Tournament, and the Los Cabos Offshore Tournament, have concluded, and the results are in. The Bisbee’s host three fishing tourna ments a year, starting with the 2022 East Cape Offshore Tournament, which took place Aug. 2-6.

The 2022 Los Cabos tournament took place from Oct. 20-23 and paid out a total of $2,182,650 in winnings to disperse across ten different categories. Out of the 182 teams that participated, team “Fellin Azul” came in first for the category Top Tournament Team with 555 points earned by catching a 555-pound black marlin caught by angler Juan Guill ermo Amador winning them $74,529. Second place went to team “Reelax” who caught a 507-pound blue marlin, win ning $25,798.50, and third place went to “Team Anaya,” who caught a 446-pound black marlin, winning $14,332.50. “Fel lin Azul” also took first place for heaviest tuna, winning them an addition al $38,220. However, “Team Anya” to ok home the biggest prize after win ning first place in three different catego ries and third place for Top Tournament Te am, awarding them a grand total of

• The month of November has already seen the first northern weather system move through Southern California and it brought strong winds, high seas and a bit of rain. The result was a about a 3 degree drop in the water temperature that brought water temperatures down into the 63-to-65-degree range.
