HUNTINGTON BEACH — The 6th annual threeday Pacific Airshow returned to Huntington Beach for the weekend of Sept. 30- Oct. 3 and was heard across Southern California. Millions of visitors gathered high and low from rooftops to the shoreline to watch 48 spectacularly choreographed aerobatic aircraft performances over the Huntington Beach Pier. An aerobatic flight is an intentional maneuver involving an abrupt change in the aircraft’s attitude, an abnormal attitude, or abnormal acceleration, not necessary for a routine flight.

Successful Veterans Fishing Day for Local Vets

POINT LOMA— The dorados were biting on Oct. 6 for Veterans Fishing Day, an annual event put on by the Point Loma Rotary Club started in 2018. Captain William Wilkerson (Capt. Researchers Find Possible Megalodon Tooth

On Oct. 5, researchers with the Exploration Vessel Nautilus team found a massive tooth that they believe could be linked to the prehistoric megalodon.

The fossil was found while the team was on an expedition to Johnston Atoll with Pacific Islands U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.

The Johnston Atoll, or Kalama Atoll, is managed by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service as a wildlife refuge. It is considered one of the most isolated atolls in the world and is a part of the Pacific Remote Islands Marine National Monument, 495,189 square miles of open ocean in the central Pacific.

The ROV Hercules scooped up the tooth, which was trapped in a ferromanganese coating, marine mineral deposits mainly containing iron and manganese oxide, while taking nodule samples for the expedition over 10,000 feet below the ocean surface on an unnamed sea mount.

These nodules form in very deep water on the seafloor from the precipitation of minerals out of the seawater. They are considered one of the slowest geological processes in the known world.

“Nodules usually require a nucleus

to grow around, which could be a very small sedimentary fragment or something as spectacular as a shark’s tooth,” said a March 2016 article from the Natural History Museum of London.

According to the museum, a manganese nodule like the one found around the shark’s tooth can form at a rate of 0.2 centimeters per every million years, meaning this shark tooth could give researchers insight into the ocean from millions of years ago.

“We believe it belonged to the infamous extinct #megalodon, but only time (and further lab analysis) will tell!” said Nautilus Live on Facebook.

The megalodon is considered to be one of the largest predators to swim in the ocean. The earliest fossils of the apex predator date back 20 million years ago, and the shark dominated the ocean for 13 million years until it became extinct 3.6 million years ago, according to the Natural History Museum.

Estimates theorize that the shark could grow between 50-60 feet in length, with teeth reaching up to 7 inches in length.

Its name, megalodon, actually means “large tooth,” which is rather apt for a fish this size.

Researchers believe the shark was

adapted to warm tropical and subtropical waters around the globe; teeth have been found on every continent except Antarctica.

The shark is most commonly depicted as a large great white shark, but new research suggests that is incorrect.

According to the museum, the shark had a much shorter nose and a flatter, squarish jaw compared to the great white shark, and a lot like the modern blue shark, it probably had extra long pectoral fins to support its weight and size.

Researchers do not believe the shark still swims the depths of the oceans in obscurity for a couple of reasons.

It would need large prey like whales and other sharks to sustain itself, leaving some kind of evidence. In addition, the shark could not tolerate the ocean’s cold depths where it would need to be to hide.

But they left behind many teeth to study

and a chilling tale for ocean explorers.

Doctors Katie Kelley and Rebecca Robinson from the University of Rhode Island Marine Geological Samples Laboratory spotted the fossil after it was removed from a rocky coating. They will continue to analyze the sample for further identification.

“The expeditions on Nautilus are only the beginning of exploration as samples are processed and analyzed for years after the ship returns to port,” said the Facebook post.

Mary Janislawski, Navigational Instructor and for Sea, Air, and the Stars

On Oct. 12, 1956, Mary Tornich Janislawski completed the Optimum Navigation Course set forth by Headquarters, 1502nd Air Transport Wing Heavy (Mats) of the Department of the Air Force. Janislawski was a prolific navigator who spent her life training mariners, pilots, and astronauts on how to use celestial bodies for navigation. She was considered a bridge between traditional and tested methods with newer navigation methods.

Janislawski was born in San Francisco on June 9, 1908, to Italian and Yugoslavian immigrants. According to History.com, she was drawn to flight from an early age and spent her

early childhood wearing an aviator helmet she sewed for herself from scraps of felt. By her 20s, she was working in a candy factory to put herself through the University of California, Berkley, where she earned degrees in mathematics and astronomy.

After graduation, she worked with Bay Area mariners before she was hired by Captain Philip Van Horn Weems, acclaimed designer of the Weems sextant. He had started a certification program for air navigation and hired Janislawski as the West Coast liaison and manager, according to the National Park Service website

Other notable pilots from this program include Charles Lindbergh, the first pilot to fly solo nonstop across the Atlantic Ocean in the Spirit of St. Louis.

In 1940 the New York Times declared Janislawski, the “most outstanding woman teacher of aerial navigation.”

In December 1941, when Japan attacked Pearl Harbor, Janislawski was teaching at Stanford University before she left her post to teach WWII pilots how to plot their positions correctly.

She started at King City airport in Mesa Del Ray. She then moved on to Alameda Naval Air Station to train in the US Navy’s Women Accepted for Voluntary Emergency Service program for celestial navigation.

She prepared Navy fliers for carriers and bases in the Pacific missions under radio silences, according to SOFREP, a mil-

“Renew Newport” Launches Inaugural Volunteer Day

NEWPORT BEACH — Renew Newport kicked off the first “Love Newport Beach Volunteer Day” on Oct. 15. The event is supported by more than 25 businesses, non-profits, and faith-based organizations. Volunteers will be paired with more than 30 projects throughout the city. There will be several ways for individuals and families to participate. At 8 a.m., volunteers will meet up at City Hall, 100 Civic Center Drive, for breakfast and a kick-off celebration before projects begin at 9 a.m. Projects will end at 12 p.m., and several restaurants throughout the city will offer discounts to volunteers wearing event tee-shirts. Thousand Steps Reopened in Santa Barbara

SANTA BARBARA — Santa Barbara’s historic beach access stairway Thousand Steps, reopened after a six-month closure for safety repairs and improvements. The steps were originally called Camino a Mar and were built by the city almost 100 years ago in 1925. Unfortunately, the lower steps had eroded from coastal conditions and became difficult and dangerous to use.

Repairs and improvements thus far include:

• Demolition and reconstruction of the lower 24 steps and installation of seven additional steps to provide a safer and more accessible path during seasonal changes to sand level.

• Installation of a continuous handrail extending from the street level to the beach.

• Construction of a new concrete guardrail at the main landing mid-stairway.

• Drainage improvements to allow for groundwater capture to reduce algae growth and slippery stair treads.

• Installation of a bicycle rack on top of the bluff.

The steps are set to close again later this year or early next year to add an apron at the beach level to protect the stairs; an official ribbon cutting ceremony is to be announced.

USFWS Seeks Public Comment on San Francisco Bay Population of Longfin Smelt

SACRAMENTO — The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is seeking public comment on a proposal to list the San Francisco Bay-Delta population of longfin smelt as an endangered species under the Endangered Species Act. A study shows that the population is in danger of extinc tion throughout the range, and the service has opened up a 60-day public comment period. Habitat loss due to the long-term reduction and alteration of freshwater flows into the San Francisco Bay estuary is the primary threat. Longfin smelt requires specific water temperatures and adequate freshwater flows to survive. “The longfin smelt may be small and unassuming, but they are an important part of the BayDelta estuary. The loss of this species would have a ripple effect throughout the ecosystem,” said Paul Souza, the Service’s Pacific Southwest Regional Director, in an Oct. 6 press release. “If this species is listed, the Service will work with partners to balance the needs of the species and communities that depend on Bay-Delta water resources. Additional funding for recovery actions can also be made avail able through the Service and our partners for continued conservation of the fish in California.”

The proposed rule was published in the Federal Register on Oct. 7, 2022. Comments will be accepted until Dec. 6, 2022. Requests for public hearings must be submitted in writing no later than Nov. 21, 2022.

But the important legal issues can probably be divided into three categories: The boat, the operator, and the insurance.

charter) without the need for a Coast Guard inspection.

A Coast Guard inspection relating to the carriage of passengers for hire should not be confused with the courtesy inspections conducted by the Coast Guard Auxiliary. A Coast Guard inspection for a boat in passenger service is much more rigorous and much more expensive. The inspector will examine the structural design and construction of the vessel and all of the vessel’s systems, and initial inspections are conducted while the boat is out of the water. Most inspected boats are built to Coast Guard specifications when the boat is new, since the reconstruction of an older boat to these standards is usually prohibitively expensive.

While we’re considering the characteristics of the proposed charter boat we also need to look at where the boat was built. The United States is one of many nations that protects its domestic transportation industries through “cabotage” laws. These laws require the transportation of passengers or cargo between U.S. ports to be performed aboard boats that are registered and built in the United States.

Cabotage laws apply regardless of how many passengers are being carried aboard the boat, which may be a problem since many sailing yachts in the size range of our reader’s boat are foreign-built. A foreign built vessel may not legally carry passengers for hire in this country unless the owner obtains a waiver of the restriction through to the Small Vessel Waiver Program administered by the United States Maritime Administration (“MARAD”). Information regarding a waiver is available on MARAD’s web site at http://www.marad. dot.gov (follow the links to the Small Vessel Waiver Program).

The next issue involves the operator of the vessel. The master of any vessel that carries passengers for hire must be licensed by the Coast Guard as a captain, for the class of service in which the boat is operating. Our reader apparently holds a Coast Guard license, but since he is interested in operating overnight charters, the Coast Guard may require an additional licensed crew person to be aboard if the vessel is away from a dock for extended periods, even if the boat is anchored at night.

Next, our reader will need to consider the boat’s insurance policy and other forms of liability protection, and for that he will need to talk to his marine insurance broker about a charter policy. At a minimum, the policy must include an endorsement for the commercial operation of the vessel (most marine insurance policies exclude coverage for these operations), coverage for claims made by passengers, and “Jones Act” coverage for claims made by paid members of the crew.

The specific requirements for a charter operation will vary from boat to boat and from harbor to harbor. Anyone interested in getting it “right” the first time (rather than waiting for the Coast Guard to respond after an accident) should contact the Coast Guard’s local Marine Safe-

ty Office AND a maritime attorney familiar with charter businesses.

In the 1950s, she was commissioned by Transocean Airlines and Pan American World Airways to map specific Pacific routes.

In the 1970s, she set her sights on stars and met with the Navigation at Ames Research Center to apply her navigation methods to NASA to navigate to any planetary body. Her contributions led to the creation of the grid system of navigation for the Apollo Moon Missions.

In 1972 she became the first woman to be awarded the Superior Achievement Award from the Institute of Navigation

for her methods.

She had a 40-year career that took her from sea to the air and finally to the stars. She helped to transition traditional nautical navigation to aeronautical navigation. She trained hundreds of pilots, most famously Fred Noonan, who was Amelia Earhart’s navigator who disappeared with her in 1937 when she attempted to circumnavigate the globe.

Janislawski passed away on June 16, 1998, at the age of 90. She became the first female Fellow of the Institute of Navigation posthumously. The Maritime Research Center of San Francisco at Maritime National Historical Park features her family’s brass sextants and compasses in honor of her.

Dear Readers,

After a year-and-a-half at the helm of The Log, I am stepping down to take on a new position as a political reporter at the Daily Bulletin in the Inland Empire

I was offered my position at The Log at the beginning of 2021. I was beyond stoked to take on my position here and really get started on my career. I am grateful for my time here and the hands-on education I received at the helm of the paper, the good and the bad. You can learn a lot when you jump in feet first, and sometimes life can be a little sink or swim.

I fell in love with journalism because aside from sharing the world’s stories,

we are constantly challenged to learn. You become a jack of all trades and the person who knows a little about everything which makes the world so much bigger and more interesting.

I came in with a degree I fought very hard for, a solid editing background, and five awards for my writing from the California College Media Association and the Columbia Scholastic Press Association.

I came in hard with a lot of ego and I was then humbled. I was told I shouldn’t be here; I didn’t know what I was doing, and I am terrible at my job. I was also told that I am doing a great job, people liked my writing, and they were grateful that I covered certain topics. Like I said

you have to take the praise with the criticism and there will always be a good and a bad.

I will leave The Log with the same degree and the same awards, but I have gained so much more in experience and in life. I learned that I could push past my limits, I don’t quit, and I meet every deadline to the best of my ability.

I am not a perfect editor or a perfect writer, but I work hard, and I am passionate about what I do and working The Log reminded me that perfection is subjective.

During my time, we’ve brought back old sections like On the Horizons and started new ones like Sailing 101. I

Red TowBoatUS Response Vessels Go Pink for Breast Cancer Awareness

SPRINGFIELD, VA. — When recreational boats break down on the water and needed help getting home, the red boats of the TowBoatUS towing fleet responded more than 90,000 times last year. For the month of October, however, five red tow boats across the United States are going pink to bring the issue of Breast Cancer Awareness to the water.

“It is a rare moment to see a pink boat on the water, let alone one that you have called to assist you with a routine break down,” said BoatUS Vice President of Towing Services, John Condon. “We want to use our boats to bring a message of ed ucation and awareness of this disease to those on the water to help save lives and find a cure. It has caused so much pain and anguish, not only within our fleet but for our members as well.”

According to the National Breast Can cer Foundation, one in eight women will develop breast cancer in her lifetime. The on-water recreational boat towing ser vice from Boat Owners Association of The United States (BoatUS) encourages boaters to donate to the Susan G. Komen organization, which supports research, community health, and global outreach and public policy initiatives in order to make the biggest impact against this disease. Susan G. Komen offers a list of breast warning cancer signs and symp toms for women and men here.

The five local TowBoatUS companies that are running pink boats in October include TowBoatUS Long Beach, Califor nia; TowBoatUS Port Isabel, Texas; Tow BoatUS Baltimore/Annapolis, Maryland; TowBoatUS Lake Wylie, South Carolina; and TowBoatUS Fort Lauderdale, Flor ida. The response vessels range in size f rom 20 to 31 feet. Each TowBoatUS com pany is also supporting local outreach ef forts such as participating with their pink towboats in parades, fundraising at local boat shows, and getting the message out

in their local communities.

For TowBoatUS Annapolis/Balti more captain Michael Booher, this ini tiative hits close to home. “Breast cancer took my mother’s life,” said Booher, who will be piloting the company’s pink boat.

“My grandmother fought and won her battle. My sister took precautions by get ting a double mastectomy. That’s three generations of my own family affected by the disease. I have a personal mission to make sure people are thinking about how to prevent breast cancer.”

When Lou Ann Strader of TowBoa tUS Port Isabel in Texas heard about the c ompany’s initiative to bring awareness of breast cancer to local communities, she jumped at the opportunity to be in volved. Her grandmother died from the d isease in 1992. “I lost so many mem ories we would have had together, and that weighs on me,” Strader said. “I want people to remember that it’s not just the disease they are fighting, but the men tal health problems that can come with it. When our towboat becomes pink, it becomes a vessel that could save lives through education of all different aspects of the disease.”

To help boaters learn more about the disease, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention offers these tips:

• Keeping a healthy weight, exercise, limiting or staying away from al cohol and breastfeeding are some ways are some ways to reduce to the risk of breast cancer.

• Women should consult their health care provider to make an informed and shared decisions on screen ing options. Although breast can cer screening cannot prevent breast cancer, it can help find breast can cer early when it’s easiest to treat.

• The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force recommends that women who are 50 to 74 years old and are

watched our distribution increase little by little and our online presence soar. I am proud of my work and the stories I’ve covered, and I am grateful to the people I have met along the way.

The performances were set to the tune of honking car alarms as U.S. Air Force, Coast Guard, Marine, and Navy aircraft and ci vilian pilots showcased t heir impressive stunts and precision parachute drops and showed the crowds the skills of our armed forces. The event went from 10:30 a.m.4:30 p.m. each day ex cept for Sept. 30, when t he event kicked off with the Ocean Cup, a high-octane boat race around Catalina Island at 7:30 a.m. The event continued through the entire weekend ending on Oct. 3 with live music on the beach, VIP

meet and greets, and social parties.

All aircrafts imaginable participated in the show, including helicopters, an ex perimental flying car, vintage planes, Air Force jets, and even the FedEx 757 Fly pass made an appearance.

The nation’s military parachutists and pilots took off and landed at the Joint Forces Training Base Los Alamitos. Civil ian pilots take off from the Lyon Air Mu seum. Oct. 1 events were live-streamed on Hulu and immediately following the event. There is also an on-demand replay that is available.

Aircrafts performed stunts such as tail dragging, rolls, and loops, and even flew straight up, turned their engines off, and spiraled around before turning their engines back on and taking off.

2022 War Heroes on the Water

War Heroes on the Water returned to Newport Beach for the fifth annual charitable fishing tournament to raise money in support of combat-wounded veterans with a threeday on-the-water fishing experience hosted by a crew of experienced anglers.

NEWPORT BEACH — War Heroes on the Water concluded its fifth annual event which took place Sept. 23-27. A fleet of more than 50 yachts hosted 125 veterans for the three-day on the water experience. Veterans received a hero’s welcome upon arrival at the Newport Beach kickoff reception on Sept. 24, where they gathered with captains, crews, and sup porters. At the event, Tom Kilgannon, President of Freedom Alliance, WHOW’s philanthropic partner, and WHOW founder Anthony Hsieh shared words about our nation’s heroes before coun try music star Tyler Rich performed an

acoustic set.

“All of this is for these brave men and women—all the spirit, all the effort, all the donations—it’s all for you,” said Hsieh. “In harnessing the healing power of the open ocean, as well as of the close friendships formed on board, we hope to continue making an impact on the lives of our veterans and their families.”

Following the kick-off festivities, Tournament Director Rod Halper in joined Hsieh on the dock to send off 1 25 veteran participants, a record for the tournament, many of whom have re ceived some of our nation’s highest mili tary decorations, including the Silver Star a nd Bronze Star Medals and the Purple Heart. This year’s WHOW fleet includ ed more than 50 vessels, each donated to the tournament by SoCal residents, some participating for the fifth year in a row.

Freedom Alliance scholarship recip ient Haley Nicole Taylor sang a rendi tion of the National Anthem as the Or ange County Honor Guard presented the A merican flag. Then, before heading out to sea, the WHOW fleet paraded around the Newport Harbor.

A silent auction took place on Sept. 24, provided by volunteers and do nors. The auction generated more than $200,000. WHOW raised over $1 million for this year’s event and $5 million total since its inception. The money raised supports thousands of veterans through Freedom Alliance’s year-round thera peutic services and scholarships for com bat-wounded service members and their families.

On board the boats, Southern Cali fornia fishermen shared their knowledge of local waters and expert fishing tech niques to teach veterans how to catch a bite. Each crew fished for ranking points and trophies across various categories.

The WHOW fleet gathered on Sept. 26 at 5 p.m. outside Avalon Harbor for the tournament’s closing ceremo nies, which include a flyover of vintage W WII aircrafts. Crews with catches over 100 pounds gathered at Catalina’s iconic Green Pier to partake in the tourna ment’s weigh-in festivity, which was live streamed on YouTube.

“The conditions on the water were

not ideal this weekend, but our veterans fished hard,” said Tour nament Direc tor and WHOW C aptain Rod Halperin in a press release from Sept. 27. “The teams really put in the ef fort, and it paid o ff as we saw a wide variety of fish come into the pier today. Beyond fishing, SoCal’s captains and crews showed up in re cord numbers for our v eterans. It was truly unbelievable.”

Once the catches were weighed, the fleet returned to Newport Beach for an awards cer emony at the Lyon Air Museum Tuesday, Sept. 27.

Another honorable mention was award ed to Army Veteran Mea Peterson, who

fi nished in second place in the “Weight Points” category aboard El Cazador, reel ing in 210.3 pounds of Bluefin and Yel lowfin Tuna. For her second WHOW, Pe terson was one of six female veterans who joined this year’s tournament.

Twenty trophies were awarded during the celebration, including awards for spe cies, qualifying points, weight points, overall points, and top boat.

The first Pacific Airshow was initial ly called the Breitling Huntington Beach A irshow, then later, The Great Pacific Air show took place in 2016, attracting hun dreds of thousands to Huntington Beach for a display of aviation skill and military might soaring over the beach in Southern California. It is the only airshow with two editions, Huntington Beach and the Gold Coast, in Queensland, Australia.

Successful Veterans Fishing Day for Local Vets

The Point Loma Rotary Club’s annual Veterans Fishing Day hit the water again for an offshore fishing experience for local veterans.

POINT LOMA — The dorados were biting on Oct. 6 for Veterans Fishing Day, an annual event put on by the Point Loma Rotary Club started in 2018. Captain William Wilkerson (Capt. Bill) and his crew took about 25 local veterans from Veteran’s Village of San Diego 30 miles off the coast of San Diego aboard the Malihini to go deep-sea fishing.

Veteran’s Fishing Day is the brainchild of Alan Brown and Carter Shuffler, two Point Loma Rotary Club members, who started the annual event with the support of sponsors in 2018.

Vets arrived at H&M Landing in San Diego at 6 a.m. and had a quick snack be fore boarding the Malihini a round 6:30 a.m. and heading out to collect live bait. After M alihini’s deckhand Peyton Freeman briefly discussed the bait tank, the technique that goes into using sar dines as live bait, and the process that w ill be executed when fish are found and start biting, the group was off searching kelp patty after kelp patty for the per fect catch.

The veterans were a collection of am ateur and skilled fishermen, some hav ing never touched a rod or fished off shore and some who feel most at home on the water with a rod. However, the deck started rocking when the Malihi ni found a school of dorados under the perfect kelp patty.

Who is Davey Jones, and What is His Locker?

Davy Jones is portrayed in “Pirates of the Caribbean” as an octopus-faced man with tentacles and saucer eyes who locked his heart in a chest on a desert island after his one true love betrayed him. He was a cruel captain who sailed the seas collecting souls and damned them to serve on his ship for eternity.

When most think of Davy Jones,

they think of Davy Jones’ Locker, where the pirate sent Jack Sparrow and his ship, the Black Pearl, to pay Jack’s debt. In the movie, the locker is a desolate coastline, but over the centuries, the locker has taken on several myths and depictions.

However, the real story behind the phrase is quite different from its fictionalized versions, but some legend details seem to be true.

According to the mythology of

In the early days, the name Davy Jones was referred to as the sailors’ devil and, sometimes, the evil god of the seas. However, after turning up unsuccessful in tracing the term’s origin, historians argue that its root went back centuries ago, and the stories were shared with generations by word of mouth.

SDYC Set to Host 2022 International Masters Regatta

SAN DIEGO — Eleven top-notch teams will take the waters Oct. 21-23 for the 2022 International Masters Regatta. Skippers over the age of 60 from across the United States and Canada will com pete in a round-robin fleet race event u sing provided J/105s in South San Diego Bay east of Coronado Bridge. “At the Masters, skipper and crew have an opportunity to race against other top national and international grand master sailors,” said Tad Lacey, a 2021 competi tor who will return to represent the USA i n an article on Scuttlebutt . “The com petition among the teams is very high. The races are relatively short, with the competitors racing in close proximity.” Competitors are sailing all-stars; some are even previous Olympic medalists,

including the only female contestant San Diego local Annie Gardner. Gardner took a silver medal in the 1984 Olympics for windsurfing and holds three world titles in Hobie 16s and an induction into the Windsurfing Hall of Fame in 2022. These are just her most notable awards. One part of the International Masters Regatta (and the Sir Thomas Lipton Challenge Cup that follows the weekend after) that makes it so unique is the rotation dock floating off to the side of the course. United States Comes in Second Place Event Six

Jimmy Spithill led the U.S. team to second place in Spain the last weekend of September, narrowly losing first place to France, led by Quentin Delapierre.

Protect your Propeller

Ahoy sailors, this lesson will expand on boat maintenance as it becomes extra important during the off-season. Stay tuned for your next lesson when we discuss how to read a nautical chart.

Like most boat or outboard mechan ical parts, a propeller won’t last forever, but with the help of a bit of prop main tenance and care, you can extend its lifespan.

Caring for a boat’s propeller largely comes down to being cautious when op erating your boat, and of course, a bit of

TLC can save you money from having to replace parts frequently. So here is some advice to lengthen the life of your boat or outboard engine’s propeller.

Avoid Contact with Bottom Surfaces

One of the most common ways propel lers get damaged is from scraping the bot tom or running aground. But it’s a simple fi x; buy a depth finder. A depth finder is an important boat accessory for avoid ing contact with bottom surfaces. Depth finders tell you precisely how shallow the water is below you and can alert you to underwater obstacles such as sandbars or rocks. In addition, a depth finder pays for itself when considering how much money it could save you in prop repairs and replacements.

Clean and Lube the Propeller

If the propeller is not regularly main tained and has calcareous deposits, it can lead to lost thrust, shaft damage, and di minished fuel efficiency. Therefore, it’s

essential to continually wash your boat’s propeller(s) with water and a mild deter gent solution to remove any salt, oil, or g rease after each ride. Once the propel ler is clean, wipe the blades with a wa ter-repelling lubricant such as CRC 6-56 to shield them against corrosion.

Inspect Propellers for Corrosion and Minor Wear

Your boat or outboard’s propeller blades constantly encounter rough sur faces and minerals that wear them down in the water. As a result, even the most insignificant scuffs can develop into major cracks. Therefore, you should reg ularly inspect your boat’s propellers for minor wear and tear, such as scrapes and dents. If you find any cuts or abrasions on a blade’s face, use fine-grit wet and dry sandpaper to remove them. In addi tion, you can smooth out scratches on the edges of propeller blades with a mill file.

tire, an alternate you can use in case of an emergency. For example, if your propeller is too severely damaged to get you home, replacing the prop is an alternative to get ting towed back to shore. Many boaters suggest you buy a used propeller of the correct size to carry as a spare. That way, you have a backup that didn’t cost too much and has enough life to get the job done until you can replace your propel ler. For example, you can use an afford able aluminum prop as the backup to a stainless propeller. You’ll also need a pro peller wrench to remove the prop nut and should carry a spare nut, thrust washer, and any other hardware required to replace your propeller, just in case you drop a part into the water. It’s helpful to prac tice changing the propeller in the marina or with the boat on a trailer so you know the routine. Changing a propeller at sea can be tricky, especially if the water is rough. If that’s the circumstance, it may be safer to call for a tow.

Your boat’s propeller connects the engine to the water, just as tires connect your car to the road. Even minor damage can impact boat performance, so it’s essential to take good care of your propeller.

365-DAY FISHING LICENSES GO ON SALE FOR 2023

The California Department of Fish and Wildlife will start selling 365-day fishing licenses for 2023 on Nov. 15.

The licenses will go into effect on Jan. 1, 2023; upon purchase, the license will be effective for 365 continuous days.

“I’m proud to announce that we’re able to sell yearlong licenses many months sooner than we anticipated,” said CDFW Director Charlton H. Bonham in an Oct. 6 press release. “I applaud the staff that worked tirelessly to bring this benefit to California’s anglers who have been asking for the 365-day license for a very long time.”

On Feb. 16, 2021, California Assemblymember Jim Wood re-introduced bill AB817 to transition California from the traditional calendar-based system to the 365-day system. The bill also includes a mobile application that will offer an option for anglers to display their sportfish-

OCTOBER OFFSHORE FISHING REMAINS HOT!

• We are well into the month of October and Southern California anglers have a lot to be thankful for as the offshore fishing remains strong for species that include bluefin tuna to 200-plus pounds, yellowfin tuna, dorado, striped marlin, skipjack and yellowtail. Anglers have been able to target varied species by working areas that are spread out over a large expanse of ocean ranging from the waters above Catalina and San Clemente Islands on down to the offshore waters off Punta Colnett.

• As has been the case, bluefin tuna are the main attraction and bluefin up over 200 pounds have been biting in an area ranging from the back side of San Clemente Island on up to the waters to the southwest of the West End of Catalina. Specific productive areas within that zone have been 3 to 5 miles southwest of the West End of Catalina, 2 to 4 miles outside of the Catalina Canyon, the 499 Spot, 3 to 8 miles northwest of the West End of San Clemente Island and outside of San Clemente Island to the southwest of the West End and outside of both West Cove and Seal Cove. A nice addition

to the bluefin fishing in some of these areas is that there has been a chance at finding 20 to 60 pound yellowfin tuna that have been holding around porpoise.

• Bluefin have been biting both day and night. Most of the bluefin are being located by finding meter marks, sonar marks and blind trolling strikes. There has not been much showing in the way of spots of foaming or breaking fish. During the night the best bet has been using knife jigs or sinker rigged sardines. During daylight hours, the best bets have been flylined and sinker rigged sardines, knife jigs, trolled Nomad Madmac jigs and kite fished flying fish. For private boaters, the trolled Nomad Madmac jigs are often the best bet during the daylight hours and they work best when trolled at 12 to 14 knots.

• Private boater Tom Golding of Last Buck reported catching 2 nice sized bluefin by working the region to the west-southwest of the West End of San Clemente Island and off West Cove. Golding started out the morning with a bang in catching a 144 pound bluefin that he personally caught on a Nomad pink and

glow color knife jig. The fish was hooked from a meter mark found at 6:42 AM in 66.12 degree water.

• Golding reported that their second bluefin of the day was a 60 pound fish that was caught by his boat partner Steve Kunitake using 40 pound test and a sardine. The bluefin bit while baiting a kelp paddy in 66.14 degree water.

• Golding said that they spent a good part of the day trolling Madmac jigs with no luck on the troll and ended up heading for home at around 2:00 PM. On the way home they found a productive dorado kelp paddy off the East End of Catalina and caught their two largest dorado of the season which were 25 pound bulls. The dorado bite was from a kelp paddy found a few miles to the southwest of the 277 Spot.

• Dorado fishing in U.S. waters remains good with productive kelp paddy areas being the 277 Spot, the 209 Spot, the 312 Spot, the 178 Spot and 8 to 15 miles off the stretch of coast between San Onofre and Oceanside. There has also been an occasional bonus 30 to 40 pound bluefin tuna or yellowfin tuna caught incidental to fishing for dorado in the area 8 to 15 miles off the coast between San Onofre and Oceanside. Finding the “right” kelp paddy can lead to a wide open dorado bite and more.

• Private boater Robert Serdoz of Lucky Charm fished a solo trip

out of Oceanside and found a kelp paddy about 11 miles off Oceanside that went completely wide open on dorado. Serdoz said he caught and also caught and released dorado until he used up his last bait in the bait tank. Serdoz wound up catching his U.S. limits of 10 dorado and also caught and released an additional 10 dorado.
