EN THOUSAND MILES is a long way. One would
have to jump in a car and drive from Seattle to Miami, turn around and drive back to Seattle, and then drive back to Miami to cover about 10,000 miles. It’s roughly 10,300 miles from Juneau, Alaska, to Cape Town, South Africa, as the crow flies, just to provide a little perspective. Perspective to what, you ask? Well, to one of the feature stories in this issue. The owners of a brand new Aspen C120 catamaran are subjecting their new boat to a 10,000-mile shakedown delivery cruise of sorts. They’re not going to Cape Town, just Annapolis, Md. But not directly. They started in Anacortes, Wash., went up to Alaska — see what I mean? — and are now (if all has gone according to plan) getting ready to cross from Southern California waters into Mexico waters, where they will hug the Baja coast, round the peninsula, cruise the perimeter of the Sea of Cortez, pull the 40-footer out of the water around San Carlos, truck it across Mexico and Texas, launch it again in Galveston, cruise the Gulf of Mexico around the tip of Florida and out to the Bahamas, motor back across the Gulf Stream and take the coast of the U.S. up to Maryland. Now that’s a delivery (and a sentence). One of our longtime freelance writers was aboard the Aspen while it cruised southeast Alaska during the early portion of the trip. Roger McAfee saw it as an opportunity to give the boat, which he had tested in the past, a real test. He spent five days aboard and
6
McAfee and the rest of the crew visited, Alaska’s people were there for them. Whether it was a 7 p.m. oil change, directions to the pharmacy, tips on the best local fishing grounds or dinner suggestions, the crew of Knot Wafflen’ got what they needed. Check out the full story, which starts on page 20. To read McAfee’s full sea trial of the Aspen C120, visit seamagazine.com/ aspen-c120. In our August issue we printed a story called “Sweat the Details,” which detailed how to get a boat ready to sell. While we talked to several brokers for the story, we neglected to mention the California Yacht Brokers Association (cyba.info) and the Northwest Yacht Brokers Association (nwyachtbrokers. com) as valuable sources for finding qualified brokers.

CARVER YACHT OWNERS CAN BOAT WITH CONFIDENCE. AND THAT’S OUR PROMISE. To build a boat is a very complex undertaking. In fact, not many boat builders actually build their boats. It’s more of an assembly process, with large numbers of components sourced from other vendors and put together at the plant.
To maintain the highest levels of quality control, reliability and structural integrity, Carver manufactures and produces most of its components in-house, assuring each customer the finest production boat available. What’s more, Carver’s Class B rating means its yachts are built to navigate as far out as 200 miles offshore and sustain Force 8 winds and waves up to 13 feet. No wonder Carver Yachts is taking the marine industry by storm. Sea trial one at your Carver Yachts Dealer today. We promise you won’t be disappointed.
Carver Yachts Promise Every Carver Yacht owner has my personal pledge that we will provide whatever support is necessary to ensure the finest ownership experience in boating. As a Carver owner, if you ever have a problem that cannot be remedied by your local dealer, I promise that the right technical experts will be assigned to aid that dealer in solving your problem. I invite you to take a closer look at Carver and see the difference.

A Contemporary in Classic Clothing DUTCH BUILDER BREEDENDAM CONCOCTS A THOROUGHLY MODERN ALUMINUM YACHT THAT LOOKS LIKE IT’S FROM ANOTHER ERA.
D
THE FIRST LOOK at the new Breedendam MTB fourzero Wheelhouse gives the impression of a classic wooden gentleman’s cruiser. It has a long bow, a low cabin roof, a gently sloped shearline from the bow to the transom and a fairly plumb bow. The big difference that most observers won’t notice until they’re closer to the boat is that it isn’t a wooden boat. It’s all aluminum, and it’s pod-driven.
Designed by Guido de Groot and built with lots of input from its owner, the new MTB fourzero uses teak to contrast with white surfaces, favors synthetic leather and outdoor fabrics for durability and comfort, and uses a neutral color palette that’s very popular currently. Its dark blue hull (white is available) is eye-catching, and the wood-colored swath toward the top is an elegant touch. Owner requests include lots of diving equipment and a hydraulic bathing ladder and gangway.
With two staterooms, or one stateroom and a lower dinette that can convert to a berth, it can sleep four people comfortably. The galley, which is belowdecks, includes an oven, a microwave, a refrigerator, a two-burner induction stove and a dishwasher.

IN JUNE , hundreds of thousands of strange creatures resembling pickles showed up in the ocean waters off and around the coast of Newport, Ore. The creatures, called pyrosomes, look like translucent pickles, about the size of cucumber pickles and were first spotted in the area two years ago but showed up in astounding numbers in June. Pyrosomes, which might be new to many boaters on the West Coast, are usually found just offshore in tropical climates.
While the MTB fourzero Wheelhouse appears to be from another era, its technology and propulsion are definitely of today.
Outdoor seating is abundant on three cockpit settees (and a bow sunpad), and an opening sunroof brings a bit of outdoors inside. The 43-foot, 10-inch-long yacht has a beam of 13 feet, 2 inches and a draft of about 3 feet, 5 inches, for getting to shallow-water destinations. Its twin Volvo Penta IPS 600 diesels crank out a combined 870 hp and push the classic-looking yacht to 35 knots. So the yacht is classic looking, but it’s definitely of its time when it comes to power and performance. Breedendam Yachts, breedendam.com
Brighter Light BOATERS OFF THE COAST OF Oregon who pass by the
Cape Blanco Lighthouse may notice the beam is a tad brighter these days. That’s because Coast Guard members gave the lens a good scrubbing in July. Cape Blanco Lighthouse serves as both a navigational aid and a danger warning for ships operating around the southern Oregon coast.

SPOOKY SHIP STORIES
Halloween is right around the corner, so here are a few spooky ship stories to heighten the mood.
1/ Ourang Medan sent out a distress signal and when two American ships sent rescuers on board, a grisly discovery was found. The crew were all found dead with horrified expressions on their face, mouth agape — without any signs of foul play. Before an investigation could get underway, a mysterious fire sank the ship. 2/ Octavius was a three-masted schooner that was found by a whaling ship in 1775. When the derelict ship was boarded, the entire crew was found dead, frozen and preserved. But upon
inspection, it was concluded that the ship had been lost in the Arctic for 13 years.
3/ Kaz II, also known as “the ghost yacht,” was a catamaran found drifting 88 nautical miles off the coast of Australia in April 2007. Strangely, when emergency crews boarded the drifting vessel, the boat appeared fully functioning and normal, with place settings on the table and the engine still running. The only indication of anything out of the ordinary was a badly shredded sail and no signs of life aboard.

Luxury Land Yacht Debuts Bentley’s Mulliner workshop is the bespoke of the bespoke, and now it has debuted a limited edition Continental GT V-8 Convertible with unique nautical finishes. To create this special Galene Edition and give it a nautical flair, Mulliner consulted with specialist designers at British builder Princess Yachts. The car’s unique pinstriped walnut veneer in a natural finish was inspired by the decking found on Princess yachts. It also features a Glacier White exterior and body kit, and its polished finish and graceful lines mirror the beautiful curving lines of contemporary motoryachts. A flash of Sequin Blue on the lower brightware — a boot stripe, if you will — is meant to give the impression of a yacht afloat on a tranquil sea. This edition is limited to only 30 cars, so anyone thinking of upgrading to a Bentley better act fast. (princessyachts.com, bentleymotors.com)
Celebrating the Real Discoverer
“Leif Eriksson Discovers America” by Christian Krohg, 1893
The car’s unique pinstriped walnut veneer in a natural finish was inspired by the decking found on Princess yachts.
NOT TO BE CONFUSED WITH Chris-
topher Columbus, Leif Erikson the Viking was allegedly the first European to set foot on North American soil, but concrete evidence of his travels is lacking. He is celebrated in seaside towns throughout the Pacific Northwest thanks to the huge influx of Scandinavian immigrants in the 1800s and 1900s. Nationally, Leif Erikson Day is Oct. 9, so chosen because the ship Resauration arrived in New York Harbor on that day in 1825, to begin the first organized immigration from Norway to the United States.
With this check, the U.S. purchased Alaska from Russia.
Feting the Frontier On March 30, 1867, the United States purchased Alaska from the Russian Empire, for $7.2 million. The formal flag-raising took place at Fort Sitka on October 18, 1867. It is still an observed holiday in the state of Alaska.

IS MY BOAT READY?
CLASS F IS IN SESSION USE THE LESSONS LEARNED BY CUBAR VETERANS TO MAKE YOUR PASSAGE DOWN BAJA SAFER AND EASIER.
IRST-TIME CRUISERS HEADING to Mexico are often full of questions and a bit of apprehension, especially if they’re going it alone with a small crew. How do we clear in? Where can we get fuel? What are the safe overnight stops along the outside of Baja? Those questions and many more can cause anxiety or even keep someone from trying it. Group cruises such as CUBAR (Cruise Underway to Baja Rally) can help alleviate much of the angst newbie cruisers feel. Organizers offer training, route planning, maintenance help and more, giving novice cruisers a level of
comfort that encourages going for it. Bruce Kessler is the founder of CUBAR (formerly FUBAR — Fleet Underway to Baja Rally), and he said 10 years of running the event has taught him a few lessons. I’ve tagged along from the start and learned valuable lessons about what goes well and what doesn’t. Boat owners in group cruises or those going it alone can learn something from CUBAR’s lessons.
Does your boat have at least a 400-mile fuel range at an 8-knot average? That’s required for the longest leg on Baja, where there’s no on-the-water service to bring extra fuel. Chuck Dahill, cruise chairman for this year’s (and the previous) CUBAR, recommends all boat owners conduct a weekend training cruise beforehand, “to calculate the boat’s real fuel consumption rate vs. what the manufacturer thinks it is.” Participating boats get inspected for mechanical readiness during the months leading up to the November cruise, but other cruisers can take advantage of CUBAR’s list of inspection points and spares, at tinyurl.com/cubarlist. Everything in the engine room and the steering and propulsion systems should be inspected and serviced. Change the oils and fluids. Replace elderly hoses and belts. Carry maintenance spares for the main engine, generator, alternator, water-maker, air conditioner, pumps, breakers, etc. Locate and test all the seacocks, in case any are corroded or frozen, and tie a bung and a mallet to the pipe. For running after dark, learn how to dim the screen or monitor on all bridge instruments, to eliminate their distracting reflections from the inside of the windshield. Some older electronics lack night settings. “The red and green of my engine synch lights looked just like a boat coming at us,” Dahill said. “I ended up covering most of the dashboard with towels.” Some owners get their boat’s fuel polished before heading south. If your cruising plans call for Central or South America, where fuel in remote places comes from rusty oil drums, consider carrying what’s dubbed a Baja fuel filter, which is, ironically, no longer needed in Baja. Do your fuel tanks have years worth of gunk in the bottom that will get stirred up in bouncy seas and clog your filters? Get that taken care of. “It’s not as scary as all the veterans make it sound,” Dahill said. “Most people who prepare and plan have little to no problems. The war stories get better over time.”
IS THE CREW READY? Because any trip down Baja includes overnight runs (CUBAR has three) between rest stops, your crew roster should include more than two capable overnight watch-standers. Train the crew in advance. Make sure everybody knows how to steer and stop the boat, disengage the autopilot, navigate accurately using the electronics, use all the radios, set off the MOB alarm, make regular engine room checks, keep the log book, etc. The captain should show everybody the location of

all the PFDs. Drill your crew. There’s never been a fire or man-overboard (MOB) situation during CUBAR, but everyone prepares for it. The captain should assign each person a job in case of MOB and then pretend it’s the captain who has fallen overboard. Train all crew to quickly toss a PFD in the water to visually mark the MOB spot and where to find and write down the boat’s latitude and longitude. Plus, the captain should write down a mayday call to keep near the radios. Practice how to fight a fire in the engine room and the galley. Walk through an abandon ship procedure, indicating exactly what to do with the life raft, EPIRB, dinghy and ditch kit. “Chuck and I laminated our Emergency Procedures checklist — emergency radio, MOB, abandon ship — and taped it inside our control panel covers for quick access,” Kelly Dahill said. “Hopefully we’ll never need it, but it’s ready to guide us through the emergency process.” Practice anchoring overnight, specifically to test the ground tackle; it’s the cheapest form of insurance. Is the chain marked to clearly show how much is going out? Does the windlass retrieve flawlessly? Check the wiring belowdecks for corrosion. Do you carry spare windlass fuses? Stern anchor? Dinghy anchor? Spare rode and shackles? Should you consider rigging an anchor bridle to take the strain off the windlass and to quiet the noise in the forward stateroom? Develop some anchoring hand signals. The owners of

“You did it again, didn’t you?” She phrased it as a question but clearly it was an accusation.
on the face of the man I was talking to, or maybe it was the uncomfortable look on my own visage that gave us away, but either way, I knew then that I’d been set up. We were in Petersburg, Alaska, and I was discussing the Aspen C120 hull design with a father who was working on his boat and keeping an eye on his three small children fishing from the dock. He drew my attention to a beautiful young blonde woman walking down the dock. “How would you like to be trapped for three weeks on a boat with someone like that?” He asked. I allowed as how that wouldn’t be difficult to take. The woman continued down the dock, approached him and gave him a kiss. He then, with a big smile on his face, introduced her as his wife. She was perceptive, read the discomfort on my face, and whirled around to her husband with the accusation. Clearly, this was not the first time he had “bragged on his wife” in this manner. I did, however, note a slight grin on her face as she got on their boat. It wasn’t the first time, nor would it be the last, my eyes (and ears) had been opened to a trait common to so many folks in southeast Alaska: their sense of humor. PERHAPS IT WAS THE BROAD GRIN

ive days in southeast Alaska, arguably the best cruising grounds in the United States, is something marine writers usually only dream about — but dreams can come true! There is, of course, always a downside to a test that long in that location. One has to get over gawking at the magnificent scenery and the glaciers and the massive icebergs, fight through the fabulous halibut fishing and remember why he’s there — to test hull #8 of the largest vessel in Aspen’s product line, its 40-footer, the C120. A five-day boat test, as the boat runs south from Juneau to Ketchikan, a distance of about 300 miles — roughly 3 percent of the distance the boat will cover during its 10,000-mile tour from Seattle to Maryland (via Alaska) by next October — provides a unique opportunity to see how a boat performs in actual cruising conditions. It also provides an opportunity to test some other Alaska-based assertions, for science and the benefit of humankind. Does glacier ice really last a lot longer in drinks than “normal” ice? Spoiler alert: It does!
The outdoor space on the Aspen C120 includes a large cockpit and swim platform, a seat cushion that makes the bow sociable and a flybridge for six to eight people. An all-day cruise speed of 17 knots means the boat can cover a lot of water when called for.
The Aspen is a patented, powered proa catamaran whose starboard hull is 35 percent larger, volumetrically, than the port hull. It has only one engine, situated in the stern of the starboard hull, which is accessed via hatches in the cockpit. Experience has shown that one of the more useful features on any good cruising boat is its ability to operate slowly while remaining quiet and efficient. Boaters, even after a long cruise, often note they spend far more time at slow speeds than at higher speeds, whether they’re picking their way around and through rock piles while stalking fish or avoiding icebergs and “bergy bits” when cruising southeast Alaska. The Aspen 40 scores at the top of the heap when it comes to its ability to move slowly, efficiently and quietly. At about 1100 rpm, the 435 hp computer-controlled common-rail Volvo Penta D6 gets 10 mpg, while making 8 mph, something unheard of in any other three-stateroom 40-footer. At that speed our decibel meter read 68. A normal conversation is 70. The quietness of the vessel is a tribute to Aspen’s unique design and noise-abatement protocols.
I HAVE CRUISED FOR WEEKS in the Caribbean and the Florida Keys, through Panama and up the West Coast of the United States, on more than one occasion, but I have never seen more beauty and more variety than in southeast Alaska. It is, without a doubt, the best cruising area in the U.S. Colleagues of mine who have delivered vessels to and from various locations around the world have reached the same conclusion. A traditional cruising story discusses the various beauty spots in the cruising area. In southeast Alaska there is natural beauty everywhere. A traditional cruising piece notes pubs and restaurants in the cruising locations. In southeast Alaska, each of the towns we visited had plenty of restaurants and drinking establishments, usually within walking distance of the marinas. What really sets southeast Alaska apart as a unique cruising area are its people. All of the local people we met were friendly,

knowledgeable and helpful. Boaters are generally friendly and helpful if other boaters need a hand, but residents of southeast Alaska seem to have turned that helpfulness into an art form. The helpfulness started during our first full day in Juneau when we met a resident charter operator who was happy to share his local knowledge with us. Our skipper mentioned he had been trying to arrange an engine oil change for the Aspen but all the mechanics he had talked to were busy. The charter operator made a quick phone call to one of the mechanics he uses to maintain his charter fleet and arrangements were made to have the oil change done at about 7 o’clock that evening. Remember, there are about 20 hours of daylight in Alaska at this time of the year (June). The mechanic showed up at the appointed time and brought not only the necessary pump but also filters and oil.
Another important feature of any good cruising vessel is good visibility, and Aspen’s 40-footer excels in that category. From the helm seat the skipper can easily see anyone in the deckhouse, on the foredeck and sidedecks, and in the aft cockpit. Visibility like this makes the C120 a great fishing machine. Traditionally, anglers, even when they’re using rod holders, have to be in the cockpit, and in the Pacific Northwest and southeast Alaska it is known to rain — a lot during certain times of the year. During our cruise, when bottom conditions looked promising, we drifted slowly over reefs and near drying rocks, with a halibut rig deployed and the rod in a transom holder. We sat comfortably inside the deckhouse with a nice warm cup of coffee, chased by a hot glass of Jamison’s scotch, and we could see the rod, so we knew when a fish struck and the reel started singing. One such effort yielded a 35-pounder.
WE LEFT JUNEAU and made our way south toward Petersburg, where we had to pick up another passenger. Since Petersburg, known as Alaska’s Little Norway, is a town that still makes its living from the sea, fishing boats of all types were everywhere. Petersburg employs two harbormasters, and they very efficiently directed us to an open transient slip. The harbormaster’s office operates 24 hours a day, and they were happy to provide “local knowledge” in the area of marine parts and service, something that saved us hours.

While Larry and Nick Graf, the father and son proprietors of Aspen Power Catamarans, were foraging for parts, I wandered into the town’s business district to look for a pharmacy. I was obviously lost. A couple of local residents noticed my confusion as I looked up and down the street and came to my rescue. “You look lost. Can we help?” When informed of my quest, they pointed to a sign about two blocks away. When I entered the pharmacy, the staff was helping many other customers. After a few minutes it was my turn at the till, and I explained that my medication was Canadian and I wasn’t sure what the U.S. equivalent was. “No problem,” said the staff member, who typed a few words into her computer, went to one of the bins and came back to the till. “This is the same,” she said with a smile. As I paid, I noted the cost was much less than I paid in Vancouver. The friendliness and helpfulness were not limited to Petersburg. It was evident in every town we visited: Juneau, Petersburg, Wrangell and Ketchikan. If we had any questions as we cruised along, a quick VHF marine radio call brought answers from boaters in radio range. This helpfulness is another advantage to boat owners who want to safely cruise southeast Alaska in their own boat.
We discovered, almost by accident, another item that makes the C120 a great fishing machine, during a fight with a 55-pound halibut that was slightly more than four feet from nose to tail.

Using a dip net to haul in any fish of that size is impossible. The fish will either bridge across the net or destroy it once it’s in. The only sure way to get a live fish of that size on board is to skid it in over the swim step into the cockpit and then quickly close the transom door. If the fish is gaffed through the brain before it’s on board, all is well. If not, all hell usually breaks loose until the fish is subdued, but at least it doesn’t get away, and gear that has been thrashed all over the cockpit can be cleaned and tidied up. The 55-pounder skidded easily up over the swim step and into the cockpit. From the flybridge visibility was suburb and that’s where we usually operated the boat from when we cozied up to the various glaciers. It made keeping an eye on the hundreds of bergy bits much easier as we threaded our way through them.

A TOP LOCATION for most boaters cruising southeast Alaska waters is Glacier Bay National Park, but the Alaska Park Service recently announced regulations that will cut down dramatically on the number of private recreational boats that can enter the bay. All small-boat skippers must have a permit that allows for entry at a specific time — and there’s a waiting list!
Peter Robson and Holmes pose after stopping a runaway train (not really) (1). Larry Graf, Steve Birkinbine, Robson, Holmes and Brian Lind celebrate a safe arrival (2), while Holmes, Graf and Birkinbine celebrate for undisclosed reasons (4). Some of Alaska’s non-human denizens are as friendly as its humans. Juneau mechanic Mark Brooks can change the oil and make you laugh, as his business card designation HMFIC shows (5).

Different Boats
They must observe closures for wildlife and take an hours-long “course” before being permitted into the area. A maximum speed of 8 knots makes it slow going for the 65 miles inside the bay. Local boaters grumble that the park service is caving to the demands of the big cruise ships that have difficulty maneuvering when there are a number of smaller boats in the bay. For boat owners, not being able to access Glacier Bay is not a problem. There are glaciers and spectacular waterfalls everywhere, and Tracy Arm — where boaters can maneuver right up to the glacier face without having to worry about being run over by a 50,000-ton cruise ship — is far more interesting than Glacier Bay. We spent a couple of days cruising Tracy Arm, getting used to cruising among icebergs and bergy bits, and being able to get right up to the glacier’s edge. We were also able to move up close to waterfalls that were entering the ocean after running thousands of feet from a glacier down to sea level. The raw, natural beauty was everywhere.
What if one wants to cruise southeast Alaska in a small boat but can’t get his own boat to the cruising grounds? Is there a way to do it without cruising with others or with a captain? There is. In Juneau, we met Steve Birkinbine, who owns a company (aukebay adventures.com) that arranges private yacht charters — some on a bareboat basis. Individual boat owners place their boat with him and he arranges the charters. He reports the vessels are mostly chartered with a skipper who is used to local conditions. “Even experienced boat owners from the south have problems with a 20-foot tide — something common in Alaska — and even if they have a Coast Guard ticket I won’t charter bareboat to them.” Birkinbine says a skippered 42 Nordic Tug that sleeps six charters for about $1,800 a day, “roughly the same cost as six hotel rooms,” he noted. It should also be noted that there are about 20 hours of daylight during the summer in southeast Alaska, so cruising days are long and provide plenty of opportunity to take in the scenery.
Another feature of a good cruising boat, and one that many cruisers say tops their list, is a relatively high cruising speed. They want the speed but still want low fuel consumption. Speed is relative, and generally more speed costs more money, operationally. A boater used to moving along at 8 knots could well be very happy if his boat was able to increase that speed to 10 knots. Many displacement cruisers whose optimum cruising speed is 8 knots get 1 mpg at that speed. Imagine being able to cruise at 17 knots and get 1.5 mpg. The 40-foot Aspen operates at that speed and gets that mileage. A good cruising boat lets the skipper spend long days at the wheel without feeling beat up at the end of the day. While there is no doubt there are many planing-hull vessels that can cruise at 17 knots, many are very rough when pounding into a head sea of even two or three feet. The Aspen, because of its wave-piercing hull design, slices through such seaways smoothly and quietly. The layout of the Aspen 40 is comfortable and it boasts first-class woodwork throughout. Its fit and finish are as good as in vessels costing hundreds of thousands of dollars more. Natural light floods the interior through windows and well-placed hatches, making the interior relatively bright and cheery even on dull days. I came to appreciate a unique touch on our C120. In each locker and cupboard throughout the boat was a light that came on automatically when the door was opened, just like a domestic refrigerator.
THE HUMOR FACTOR was on display during another scene with a local in Juneau. The mechanic there who changed the oil in our engine finished at about 9 p.m., so we invited him to have a drink. As we talked, we discovered he did marine work but also had a gold claim he worked from time to time. His business card featured his name and the words “Mining & Marine.” Under his name was what I assumed was a university degree designation: HMFIC. I am familiar with most university degree designations but had never seen that one. Thinking that it might be from a local institution that recognized “Mining & Marine” as a combined speciality I was not familiar with, I asked him what it meant. His response: “Head [expletive deleted] In Charge.” Clearly that Alaskan was serious about displaying his sense of humor, in print, to all he met.

hose clamps // grid’s rant
KEEP IT TIGHT
THE OMNIPRESENT HOSE CLAMP IS A VERY IMPORTANT BUT OFTEN OVERLOOKED PIECE OF EQUIPMENT. STORY AND PHOTOS BY DEANE HISLOP
T
HE WATERTIGHT INTEGRITY of a vessel often relies on something as simple and mundane as a hose clamp, some of which cost less than a couple of dollars. Who gives any thought to the lowly hose clamp? As long as it’s made of stainless steel, isn’t one the same as the next. No way, and thinking like that can sink one’s boat. Then there are all the important hoses that hose clamps secure: fuel, potable water, bilge pump and sanitation. Clamps that fail or are improperly used in these applications can lead to a host of failures that range from the merely inconvenient to the truly catastrophic. Inspecting a boat’s hose clamps annually will go a long way toward preventing failures. The most common style of clamp, wormgear driven, has been around since just after World War I when inventor Cmdr. Lumley Robinson, a retired Royal Navy officer, patented the first design in 1921. He called it a Jubilee Clip. Worm-gear clamps utilize embossed threads and have a smooth, lined underside that reduces intrusion. Inexpensive clamps have bands with stamped-out slots, the edges of which dig in and drag against the hose, holding that part of the band in place, while the non-perforated part of the band moves easily, so it’s pulled in more. The result is less clamp force under the slots and too much where the band is smooth. The best clamps have embossed slots that keep the underside smooth. In addition, the band under the worm gear should be rounded — not flat — to match the arc of the hose, so it
Hose clamps are often overlooked, but they are important pieces in the overall safety puzzle. Make sure you have the right one for the job.
moves easily. The common perception is that it’s best to crank down hard when tightening a clamp, but that can cause a blowout by squeezing the hose material too hard and reducing the thickness of the hose. All they require is 35 inch/pounds of torque at the screw head. That’s about as much as most people can apply with a screwdriver without grunting. Too much force can lock up the screw and destroy the hose. Hoses adjust to pressure and slowly give where it is applied — a good reason to regularly check clamp tightness. One of the most important aspects of selecting a hose clamp is ensuring that the clamp size is properly matched to the hose that’s being secured. If the clamp is too small for a given application — if the band width is too narrow — it may not impinge on the hose. Using a two-inch clamp on a one-inch
hose results in excess threads once the clamp is tightened. Not only is that inefficient but a sharp, lengthy tag end remains that can injure someone working on the boat. Also, in extreme cases, it may bottom out, fooling the installer into thinking it’s properly tightened when in fact it has run out of usable thread. The other style of hose clamp is the T-bolt clamp, which uses a bolt and nut to tighten the band. This design is used for larger-diameter hoses and hoses in high-vibration areas, such as exhaust and turbocharger hoses. Usually, they are installed using a ratchet and socket, and the nut includes a nylon insert that can resist vibration-induced loosening. T-bolt clamps have their weaknesses. Because the bolt and nut are both made of stainless steel, they are prone to galling, or thread damage caused by localized friction-induced heating. This can be SEAMAGAZINE.COM OCTOBER 2017 31

THEEXPERTS avoided by torqueing the clamp slowly and by adding a small amount of light lubricant to the threads prior to installation. In addition, some T-bolt clamps are manufactured using a folded section of tack-welded stainless steel and are, under certain
circumstances, susceptible to crevice corrosion. A good T-bolt clamp uses interlocking rather than folded and spot-welded bands, virtually eliminating the water-trapping fold and the corrosion to which it so often leads. These clamps are well suited to wet

ENGAGE IN PUSHBACK
I
’VE WRITTEN ABOUT this obliquely in the past, but it wasn’t until recently — remember, we live in a tiny Virginia hamlet known as a drinking town with an oyster problem, and we’re the last to hear anything of substance — that I learned a new phrase: “pushback.” Say you buy a boat — for instance, a Grady-White powered by Yamaha, a quality rig that costs a hundred Hamiltons. Despite the cost, you want a small alcohol stove installed by the dealer. A month into ownership, the stove — heretofore untried — doesn’t work. The Grady’s aft bilge pump doesn’t work automatically. The big Yamaha four-stroke is hitting the rev limiter at 4000 rpm. If
locations without concern for such failures. When it comes to selecting hose clamps, don’t skimp on the important component. Clamps must be all stainless steel — 304 for dry applications and 316 for wet — with solid, embossed-thread bands.
this was an Audi, you could take it to the dealer and get all the problems handled. This ain’t no Audi. Each of those problems goes to a separate manufacturer. The tech finds the stove’s shut-off/ turn-on valve procedure was never explained to the owner. Not warranty. A month ago it would have been charged to sales. Today, you get to pay for an hour’s labor. The bilge pump automatic float has a hydraulic steering cable across it. A month ago moving the cable would have been charged to the service department/rigging; now, it’s on you. The Yamaha, however, has an ECM defect that Yamaha accepts as a warranty claim. The good news is that the expensive part was covered. The bad news is that the other stuff, regardless of fair, you have to pay for. You leave the dealer’s with a foul taste in your mouth. Two months later, the alcohol stove’s valve, which you did understand, ceases to operate, and not because of you. The steering hose that had been tie-strapped higher above the float has again dropped. The ECM strides valiantly onward. The dealer charges you. The bile rises. You take the boat somewhere else, where they charge you to re-repair the stove and float problems. They want you back in a month so they can check things, which they do, and charge you. Then I start getting emails detailing the problems and financial shenanigans. I ask you, did you tell the dealer he could damned well fix, for no charge, what he screwed up or you were going to write each individual manufacturer and resolve payment that way? No? What did you do? You went to six other dealers and were charged by each for identical “repairs.” Would you have done that with your Audi? Pushback should have been employed at the first visit: no problem resolution save Yamaha’s was anyone’s fault other than the selling dealer’s. And you should not have paid a dime. Now all the things you were dealing with are out of the warranty range. No more coverage. If you’d pushed back at the beginning, the dealer would have discovered it wasn’t totally operator error, and that at least the stove was warrantied. Now the stove manufacturer thinks it still doesn’t have a problem with the stove valve because no one has ever successfully filed a claim. All they’ve done is taken the problem to dealer after dealer after… If you are charged for a repair that fails in short order, do not go to more dealers and pay them to try to fix the problem! You paid the first dealer to do the job right, and he has a moral obligation as a representative of Grady — even though none of Grady’s products failed, you still see just the Grady-White sign as you pull in the driveway — to fix it, eat the cost and smile while he’s doing it. Or you sit down at the keyboard.

SEATRIAL BY MIKE WERLING
CHRIS-CRAFT CATALINA 34
DAYBOATING IS ONLY ONE OF THIS CENTER CONSOLE’S STRENGTHS.
N
INE-HUNDRED HORSEPOWER. THAT’S the first feature to catch my eye as I approach
the Chris-Craft Catalina 34 from the dock. It’s backed into its slip, so the triple Yamaha F300 outboards stand out, rumbling power plants that for the moment are silent, but ready. Strapped to the swim step of the Catalina 34, introduced a couple of years ago and the recent recipient of a new hardtop design with an extendable Sure Shade that works at the push of a button, those outboards might cause some folks who haven’t seen a Chris-Craft in a while to perform a double take to make sure they’re looking at a Chris-Craft, but they probably won’t second guess the performance. We had a good crowd aboard the 34 during our test run at a dealer meeting in Florida, at least eight people, so our top speed (56 mph) wasn’t as good as during Yamaha testing with half as many people aboard (61.6 mph), but the rest of the numbers were very close. At 46 mph, right about 4500 rpm, the triple engines were burning a combined 45.3 gph, yielding just more than 1 mpg. While the F300s could push the Catalina 34 at that pace all day, slowing down a bit yields better efficiency. At 4000 rpm, fuel burn was 35.9 gph at 41.2 mph, and at 3500 rpm, fuel burn was 27.6 gph at 35.9 mph, for 1.3 mpg. That provides a nice range of about 375 miles — plenty for a busy weekend of island hopping or chasing fish. Our time to plane on test day was just more than four seconds, but Yamaha testing yielded a time of 3.6 seconds, and a time to 30 mph of 6.56 seconds. The power from the 4.2L V-6 outboards came on
TESTER’S OPINION
quickly and smoothly, and despite the 1,740 pounds of outboards at the stern, bowrise was minimal and didn’t last long considering time to plane was roughly four seconds. Once we were at speed, the boat handled nimbly and solidly. With 21 degrees of deadrise, the Catalina 34 heels over like a sportboat in tight turns, but maintains a solid feel. The deep V at the bow sliced through waves easily, and the flared bow kept our large group dry. The Catalina 34 is part of a trend for both Chris-Craft and the boatbuilding industry as a whole: bigger center consoles. It’s the flagship of the center console Catalina line for Chris-Craft, and in addition to its visible standout features — the outboards, the hardtop, the SureShade extension — its versatility is its calling card, fore and aft. The cockpit can be opened up for fishing action, or it can be more of a social zone,
• Given that the Catalina 34 is a Chris-Craft, its dayboat bona fides are
intact, both forward and aft, but what it offers are experiences beyond dayboating. Fishing and weekending are easily within its capabilities, and while I didn’t see this exhibited, watersports are likely to be thrown into the mix.
thanks to seats that stow and fold under the gunwales. The transom bench seat fits three people easily and can fold out of the way. The seat to port fits two people and the one to starboard is a solo. With all of the seats engaged, three sides of the three-section folding teak table are occupied. With the seats and table stowed, the cockpit is a fishing zone or a staging area for scuba diving or snorkeling, thanks to a starboard dive door and a ladder that’s hidden under a hatch in the deck sole. The bow of the Catalina 34, not to be outdone by the cockpit, possesses its own versatility. A two-person sun lounge occupies the forward portion of the center console — its back sloped gently and its forward section flat, like a chaise lounge — and a U-shaped bench seat forward of the sun lounge can seat five or six people. A table that stows under the sun lounge cushion
Its versatility is its calling card, fore and aft. serves double duty — as a dining surface or, with the help of a filler cushion, as an extension of the sun lounge, to combine it and the forward seat into one big lounge. In the center of it all, not surprisingly, is the console, which houses the helm topside and the berth/head belowdecks. The helm, with triple captain’s chairs, is going to make some people think they’re on a bigger boat. It’s situated behind the windshield, which doesn’t integrate with the hardtop, so it provides a wind break for folks seated at the helm but doesn’t close off the space, which the driver will appreciate on hot summer days. Two upgraded Garmin 7616xsv multifunction screens dominate the dash of the helm (12-inchers are standard), and with all their functionality and integration, including being able to

Thanks to fold-out seats and highlow tables, the bow and cockpit are versatile social zones. The console aft of the helm can include a livewell or a stove. Three outboards crank out a combined 900 hp, while the berth can sleep two. The helm seems like it’s on a much larger boat. SEAMAGAZINE.COM OCTOBER 2017 35

talk to the engines, they’re really all an owner needs to run the boat. Flanking the centerline wheel to starboard are the engine throttles, the Optimus 360 joystick and the trim tab controls, and to port are displays for the outboards and the joystick, and switches for lights, pumps and more. Our boat had a wood steering wheel with spokes that looked high end; a stainless
wheel with a turning knob is available. Housed within the center console and accessed via a portside door is the cabin. It’s a space that makes this dayboat/ fishing platform a real weekender for a couple, though the only shower is at the transom (where discretion might be called for). Sunken a couple of steps below the deck, the cabin space features a sink with

A window is cut into the starboard side of the console wall, and the lower-back cushion on the sun lounge can be removed to reveal a window that lets light into the cabin. Aft of the helm, occupying the rear two-thirds of the console that serves as the base for the captain’s chairs, is a galley of sorts. In Chris-Craft’s literature it’s referred to as a summer kitchen, and it is hidden under a fiberglass top that lifts on hydraulic hinges. It includes an electric grill, a two-burner stovetop and a sink on top, and drawers, a refrigerator/freezer and an ice-maker underneath. The hardtop extends just far enough to cover the unit. 36

For buyers with more interest in fishing than cooking, the stovetop can be replaced by a 30-gallon livewell, which makes a nice complement to the twin 50-gallon fishboxes that are built into the cockpit sole. Four rod holders are set into the transom, and the outboards are mounted at the rear of the swim step, so there is room to maneuver if the situation calls for it. Under the gunwale next to the helm is a space to store two rods. Chris-Craft offers an option for radial outriggers on the hardtop and includes flat platforms molded into the curved top to accommodate the hardware. Plus, coaming pads line the entire inside of the boat. Anglers can hook ’em, fight ’em land ’em, store ’em, prep ’em (on the lid of the kitchen console), grill ’em and eat ’em without ever leaving the cockpit. Fans of color coordination will be happy to discover that Chris-Craft offers 11 hull paint colors — 10 of them metallic — and will paint the outboards to match. In

addition, buyers can have the underside of the hardtop painted to match the hull. That’s a bit of customization that not all builders offer. If docking causes one to feel trepidation, the Catalina 34 has a couple of optional features that should assuage slip-side fear. Mercury and Yamaha both have joystick options for their twin- and triple-engine configurations, and Chris-Craft will install a bow thruster at the buyer’s request. Either of those alone can help immensely during docking. Combined, they’re a sure winner. I watched the Yamahas operate as we neared the dock, and it’s impressive how they jive and shimmy independently of one another based on how the driver is manipulating the joystick, deciding on their own — with the help of a computer brain — how much thrust to apply and in which direction. It’s interesting how gentle three engines with 900 horses of raw power can be, especially when they were tearing up the water on Sarasota Bay just minutes earlier.

HELMSMAN 38E PILOTHOUSE
LONG RANGE, CUSTOMIZATION AND A COMFORTABLE INTERIOR DEFINE THIS UPDATED TRAWLER DESIGN.
L
EONARDO DA VINCI was able to write backwards, from right to left on the page, in
what is known as mirror writing. I’m sure there are practical applications for such a talent, but I assume he did it mostly to mess with people — though in an age when fewer than half of the people could read, the gag had limited scope. I have no idea if Scott Helker and the crew at Helmsman Trawlers in Seattle can engage in mirror writing, but I do know they can engage in mirror building. I’ve seen it. The Helmsman 38E Pilothouse model I tested in San Diego is a mirror image of the 38E as planned, at least in the main salon/galley. On the plans (and in the photos we have), the salon is to port and the galley sits to starboard, but when John and Maria Torelli from San Diego looked at things, they had a da Vinci moment and saw things as if they were in the mirror. Their vision moved the salon (L-shaped settee that converts to a berth, two ottomans, built-in console with a drawer and shelves) to starboard and the galley (sink with a cutting board cover, oven, threeburner stovetop, microwave, refrigerator/ freezer) to port. Down a couple of steps to port — forward of the galley in the Torellis’ boat; forward of the salon in the standard layout
engine room checks while underway, and moving the carpet to lift the hatch in the pilothouse floor every 60 minutes would be a hassle. One feature John pointed out that I wouldn’t have noticed is the window size. In the salon, the windows are 15 percent smaller than standard, at the Torellis’ request, for two reasons. They wanted more wood in the interior — there’s none on the exterior but teak dominates the walls and sole inside — and they felt the smaller windows would be safer at sea. So they ordered some modifications in the main living area of the boat, but they left the rest of the interior accommodations alone.
shower. One person can’t tie up the entire head this way. The pilothouse, which the Torellis didn’t touch — “I thought it was perfect,” John said — is up two steps from the salon level. An elevated dining settee can seat four people to port, and the wood table can lower and serve as the base for a captain’s berth. Forward of that is a cabinet with a large flat top perfect for a chart table and a shallow storage compartment underneath a section of countertop that’s a hinged lid. On the starboard side aft is another wooden unit with a flat top and a four-cupholder rack. Forward of that is the helm. Its single captain’s chair fronts a wheel and dash that are traditional and modern. The wheel is a wooden ship’s wheel that will satisfy the traditionalist in all of us, while the Furuno suite of electronics in the slightly angled upper part of the dash will appeal to the smartphone-carrying 21st-century creature of today. Between the captain’s chair and the wheel is a sliding door to the sidedeck,

which has a twin on the port side. Those doors are important because the sidedecks don’t run the length of the boat. The main cabin bulkheads are pushed to the hull sides, to create more internal space, and just aft of the pilothouse doors are stairs that lead up to the flybridge. Helmsman designers decided to move the open flybridge aft a bit, to maintain the boat’s low profile and reduce its windage. They also extended the flybridge deck aft, to cover the cockpit better
for the classic look and feel without the tired arms. Out on San Diego Bay, the 38E’s modified full-displacement hull, with a sharp but soft entry and a full keel, was rock solid on test day, as one would expect with a displacement hull. As the owners of two previous full-displacement trawlers, both from a builder that specializes in longer distance cruising, John and Maria were certain they wanted another displacement

than it was on the boat’s predecessor. A Bimini can be erected, but even with it engaged, the bridge is still open, for a breezy, one-with-nature experience. The centerline helm has a covered central dash with a Furuno MFD. To the port side is the thruster control, and opposite that is the engine throttle. The captain’s chair has a twin to starboard, and a settee sits to port. Aft of that is a radar mast, and all the way aft is a dinghy deck. boat, but they realized they weren’t going to be crossing any oceans, preferring instead to partake in coastal cruising, maybe even tackling the East Coast’s Intracoastal Waterway someday. With that in mind, their extensive research led them to Helmsman, where they found and modified the 38E Pilothouse to their liking. With the Cummins QSB 6.7L 380 hp diesel pushing the boat, we reached a top speed of 10 knots on test day, as we watched the activity on the bay through three new, larger windshield panes. The engine, in the middle of the horsepower range for the boat (250 to 480), was turning
at 2420 rpm and burning 11 gph at that speed, putting its range at about 327 miles. Slowed down to 1550 rpm, about 7.5 knots, which John called the boat’s “all-day speed,” the Cummins was burning just 3 gph, for a range of 900 miles. That will get a captain and crew up and down a whole lot of coastline. To really go far, slowing down to 5.8 knots yields a 1,280-mile range, and 4.6 knots stretches that number to about 2,000 miles. One theme John kept returning to during our time on the boat was simplicity. As experienced boat owners, he and Maria knew what they needed and didn’t need in their new boat, and anything that complicated, in their eyes, the experience didn’t make the cut. They didn’t want a second engine to maintain, they didn’t want stabilizers, they didn’t want a generator (the battery bank is larger to offset the lack of genset) and they didn’t want a semi-displacement hull. With the help of the folks at Helmsman, they kept the 38E PH simple without sacrificing comfort, seaworthiness, safety or functionality. Boat owners and buyers can understand that logic.

Even if you don’t need to fully winterize the boat, take some steps to ensure the system with the most potential for unpleasantness is ready for storage.
S A N I TAT I O N S Y S T E M SH UTDOWN : 1 0 T H I N G S T O K N OW and vehicle air bags, the true importance of a boat’s sanitation system is only realized when it’s not working. Proper routine maintenance is crucial in the never-ending battle to keep things flowing smoothly, but no more so than properly decommissioning the system at the end of the cruising season. There are crucial steps to take when prepping a sanitation system for long-term downtime, but before getting to those, it’s important to understand the four basic types of sanitation systems found aboard most midsize and larger vessels — including knowing which is on your vessel — along with major system components owners should know.
LIKE WITH PACEMAKERS
• Manual pump toilets utilize an integral hand pump to bring flush water into the bowl, where it mixes with the waste and is then pumped clear. If the system utilizes an electric pump instead of a manual one, it includes additional parts, such as wiring to the pump and circuit protection. If the toilet is plumbed to draw flush water from the boat’s freshwater system, the installation will include a tie-in to that system, a holding tank, pumpout options (deck fitting and/or overboard, depending on the vessel’s area of operation), as well as the various hoses and fittings needed to connect it all together. Systems utilizing raw water for flushing (i.e., the water the boat is floating in) will additionally have a below-the-waterline through-hull fitting, a seacock and plumbing from the seacock to the toilet flush-water intake. • Macerating toilets are designed to puree solid waste, much like a garbage disposal.
The action is typically accomplished by an electric-powered “grinder” (aka macerator) that uses blades to simultaneously chop and pump waste clear of the bowl. Jet-action heads accomplish the same thing but use pressurized water jets to macerate waste. Flush water for both types can be raw water but will more commonly be drawn from the vessel’s freshwater system. • Vacuum toilets use an electric or manual pump to generate a vacuum in the system, which pulls waste from the bowl to a holding tank when the toilet is flushed. In most all cases, vacuum systems will be plumbed to the freshwater system. • Composting toilets utilize peat-moss to turn waste into compost. As they’re completely self-contained, they don’t have the plumbing needed for traditional systems; however, they do require installation of a fan and a vent pipe.

THE TASK WHILE THE TYPE of sanitation system on board will dictate specific decommissioning requirements, consider the following list of steps when making your own long-term storage task list. Just keep in mind that larger boats will likely have more than one system, each of which will need to be properly decommissioned to avoid problems later on. 1 / Flush the head sufficiently to push sewage from the hoses and rinse behind
it. If the boat is in salt water and the toilet system prior to storage or a planned period uses raw water for flushing, pour a few away from the boat. Shock treatments, such gallons of fresh water into the bowl and as the Head-O-Matic Shock Treatment, INTAKE flush it through the system. Even duct tape won’t solve the odor issue if a hose is old or the wrong kind was used. Spend the money for proper sanitation hose.
2
It’s not just the valves that should be checked. Make sure the handles on valves and seacocks are in working order.
3
The holding tank should be pumped out and cleaned. The end-of-season inspection might be a good time to make sure it’s properly secured, too, so unintended shifting doesn’t cause problems next season.
4
Seems like there’s a hose missing here. Check that all the Y valves are properly affixed and that the hoses that should lead to them are there.

lubricant specifically designed for use in marine toilets, which not only lubricates the pump wall (for easier pumping) but also keeps the internal rubber parts oiled and supple. Follow the instructions for the specific lubricant used, but the general treatment method is to add a bit of water to the bowl, pour in a couple of ounces of lube and pump the mixture through the toilet. The problem is that this method only lubricates the discharge side of the pump. A better option is to disconnect the head intake hose and pour the oil into the hose. Don’t forget to close the seacock for raw-water flush systems before disconnecting the hose. Pumping the head will then lubricate both the intake and discharge chambers of the pump. For pumps with piston rods, add a light coat of Teflon grease to the rod to help protect the piston-rod seal. 4 / Pump out the holding tank, rinse it with fresh water and then conduct a final pumpout. 5 / Inspect all sanitation system hoses for deterioration, corroded or missing hose clamps, and other signs of leaks and weakness. Leaks are one of the most common sources of head odors, so start at one end of the sanitation system and check each hose joint for leaks, ensuring all hose clamps are tight and corrosion free. Install double hose clamps where possible, but only if you have sufficient hose barb to allow it — otherwise, you’ll simply damage the hose and cause even more leaks. Check the system for places where raw sewage can collect. Hose runs should be kept as short and straight as possible. Holding tank discharge hoses should also be self-draining — deck pumpout fitting hoses should drain back into the holding tank, while overboard discharge hoses should drain to the discharge seacock without loops or low spots. Sewage can permeate older sanitation system hoses and cause odor issues. To see if a hose is permeated, wipe a section with a warm, damp cloth, drop it in a Ziploc bag, carry it out into the fresh air, open the bag and sniff it. If a hose needs replacing, now’s the time to do it. Be sure to use proper sanitation SEAMAGAZINE.COM OCTOBER 2017 45

Quality sanitation hose, such as Tecma HosePlus 38 and HoseHelix 38, is worth the cost.
Macerator pumps need to be checked to verify their operation, whether from Raritan or another manufacturer.
Jabsco’s macerator pump is no different from others in that it needs at little TLC at the end of the season.
YE AR - ROU N D CAR E
Good head care isn’t just an end-of-the-season chore. Throughout the year, keep a few chores in mind. COMPARED TO THEIR TERRESTRIAL BRETHREN , marine toilets use very little water
during flushing — one reason clogs are such a common problem. Always flush enough to move the waste out of the bowl, up the hose and past the high point of the hose (typically a vented loop), so it flows “downhill” into the holding tank and not the bowl. Flushing enough not only dilutes the waste but makes pumping the holding tank easier. How much extra flushing do you need? Two strokes per every foot of discharge hose is a common rule of thumb. If you’re worried about filling the holding tank too soon, clear the hose once at the end of the day or before leaving the boat. CALCIUM DEPOSITS can form on the inside of sanitation hoses, valves and seacocks, to the point the system becomes hard to flush, experiences leaking back into the bowl or simply clogs up. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure, but in this case pumping two cups of white vinegar through the toilet monthly will help prevent calcium buildup. SHOCK THE HOLDING TANK at least once a year as a routine maintenance item,
regardless of any long-term storage plans. USING FRESH WATER for flushing will eliminate a lot of the smell associated with saltwater flush systems. Give the system a final flush at the end of the day or prior to leaving for a while.
hose. Yes, it’s expensive, but it’s imperative to control head odors. That red heater hose may have been a bargain, but your nose will soon inform you it wasn’t such a good choice to plumb the toilet and holding tank. Premium rubber sanitation hose has a thicker wall and features two-ply reinforcement and a wire helix. It may sound like overkill, but remember it has to handle human waste that’s roughly 30 times more concentrated than typical residential sewage. 46
6 / Inspect all sanitation system seacocks to ensure they are operating properly. Keep an eye out for anything unusual, such as leaks, broken hose clamps, deteriorated (or insufficiently sized) backing plates, damaged or missing components (e.g., handles), and corrosion. If seacocks are connected to the boat’s grounding system, check to make sure all the connections are tight and corrosion free, for proper operation. If the boat will be stored in the water,
A holding tank deodorizer used regularly can help make a wholesystem cleaning easier.
shut all the sanitation system seacocks to prevent back siphoning and flooding. 7 / Check the operation of macerators or overboard discharge pumps and systems. Depending on your cruising area, this may be one of the infrequent times you get to test and verify their operation. Macerator pumps that sit idle for long periods can seize up due to lack of use. You’ll also want to check the condition of the hose, hose clamps, seacocks, discharge through-hulls and other components. 8 / Replace or blow out the vent hose. Mud daubers and other such insects love to build nests in hoses, and if the tank is filled to overflowing, bits of sewage can also clog the vent line. A clogged vent hose can promote smells and damage the system due to the buildup of pressure each time the head is flushed. A clogged vent also creates negative pressure during pumpouts, which can cause damage and possibly collapse the holding tank. 9 / Inspect flush-type toilets for leaks and component failure. The soft parts of a toilet — gaskets, seals, valves, impellers — will eventually dry out and become brittle, which leads to cracks and leaks. By replacing these parts on your own terms before they have a chance to fail, you’ve eliminated one of a boat owner’s key nightmares: toilet failure. It never happens at a good time or before the deed is done. 10 / Clean the exterior of the toilet, as well as the entire head. Giving sinks, counters, and the areas around and behind the toilet — particularly if you have boating friends with bad aim — a good cleaning with disinfecting wipes or other such cleaners will leave Neptune’s throne room smelling clean and ready for the next adventure.

nderwater lights have been popping up on hulls everywhere. Most people don’t need them but they sure look cool. In fact, there are three primary reasons to have underwater lights — lighting for nighttime fishing and diving, safety in case of a man overboard and aesthetics — and only 30 percent of underwater lights are purchased for the first two practical reasons. The other 70 percent are for effect. Like mag wheels do for cars, underwater lights ramp up a boat’s wow factor and add a bit of bling. LED-based underwater lighting was introduced in the 1990s, and 25 years later, the underlying technology has changed dramatically. The lights are better and safer, while their installation has been simplified and their performance per dollar spent has increased. CH A NGING TA STES & HIGH EX PECTATIONS

oday’s lights flash, strobe, dim, change color and even synchronize with sound. They come in single, dual and full-spectrum (RGBW) color and can change smoothly from one rich hue to another. For example, Lumitec’s SeaBlaze X Spectrum surface-mounted lights offer full-color crossfade mode with limitless color options and synchronization across all the underwater lights installed. “Full RGBW color is where the upper market is going,” said John Kujawa, president of Lumitec. “We introduce five to eight product families each year. Expectations of innovation are high, so lighting is less static and more evolutionary — more like marine electronics.” Boaters now like to set preprogrammed moods and themes for entertaining, effectively creating an on-the-water nightclub. And the more lights, the better. The conversation today is less a focus on through-hull lights potentially sinking the boat and more about underwater lights as mandatory equipment. According to Susan James, head of marketing at Lumishore, the question used to be this: “How big will the hole in the boat be?” Now it’s this: “How many should I put in?” SEAMAGAZINE.COM OCTOBER 2017 49

he underlying technology has come a long way and has contributed to the lights’ exploding popularity. Great strides have been made in the four key components of lights: housing, optics, controllers and light emitters (LEDs). Made of bronze, aluminum, stainless steel, copper, polymers (plastic) or a combination of metal and polymer, light housings have become more compact, so they require a smaller hole and less room in the hull. Also, due to some canister designs, the housing may be permanently mounted in through-hull fixtures while the guts of the light may be removed, serviced or upgraded without hauling the boat. Take for example, OceanLED’s XFM Gen 2 (Xchangeable LUMISHORE EOS SERIES THRU-HULL RANGE

+ Sea Lights.indd 50

Flush Mount), which can be serviced from inside the hull. With a bit of miniaturization, lighting companies have freed up real estate in the housing to add more smarts and heat-dissipation features. Advances have also been made in the reflectors and lenses that focus the light and determine the beam angle and its projection, which is how far it will reach and how even it will be. The higher the quality of the lens, the less light will be trapped in the fixture and, therefore, the more efficient and brighter the light. “Without optics (reflectors), companies need to push lots of power into the light, which looks good on paper with high fixture lumens but actually performs worse,” said Jim Deheer, director of marketing at OceanLED. “By using an optic to focus the beam (narrower angle), we can again make the light penetrate farther and not lose light into deep water.” Beam angles have increased — 90 degrees for surface-mounted and 110 degrees for through-hull lights. “Optical systems continue to evolve in complexity,” Kujawa said. “Light-mixing chambers, light-shaping, micro-textured diffusing films, compound optics — all are becoming more prevalent today.” Some of today’s lights work differently than before. For example, James pointed out that Lumishore’s dual-colored (blue/white) lights run each color at full power. Instead of half the bulbs shining blue and half white (as it used to be), they all shine simultaneously as either color, and that’s big when one needs a light that will punch out a substantial distance.

he greatest advances have been made in the electronics portion of the light, most specifically in the controller. “Many of the luminaires that Lumitec sells have the processing power and memory of what would be found on a typical PC just 20 years ago,” Kujawa said. “Lights now have a brain and they can communicate, which makes programming, heat monitoring, interactivity and diagnostics easier and better.” Today’s controllers can do more, such as provide individual and simultaneous control of four separate lighting zones. James said that Lumishore’s SUPRA Series, operated by the manufacturer’s Lumi-Switch, offers dual-colored lights with dimming, two-speed strobe, full-power brightness and switch memory that returns the user to the last setting when the lights are turned back on. “Also,” James said, “all our products, whether surface mount or through-hull, are more compact with a low profile that helps reduce drag and debris snags while underway.” But in most cases owners don’t need a controller that is proprietary to the light manufacturer. Information is moved via open protocols that include NMEA 0183 and 2000, and controls can be displayed on a screen via a digital switching system such as a C-Zone monitor or even the MFD at the helm. Additionally, Bluetooth connectivity has enabled remote control of the lighting environment. If one wants to manage a light display, whether customizing color sweeps, setting a mood or adding sound, he can now do so with some manufacturers’ lights from an app on an iOS or Android tablet or smartphone. “More people have exposure to lighting control, with RGBW strips being fitted in houses,” Deheer said. “So they are more comfortable with lighting apps, like our DMX Control app.”

No matter the shape of the housing, the number of lights included, the type of housing or the means of control, underwater lights are better than ever, and manufacturers are all competing to offer the brightest lights with the least amp draw. It’s all about lumens per watt, lumens per dollar, and lumens per fixture. SEAMAGAZINE.COM OCTOBER 2017

n the power draw vs. brightness equation, the evolution has been to increase the lumens per watt. A decade ago the standard was 16 lumens; today, it’s more than 10 times that. Many companies are striving for increases in output that are 20 to 50 percent year over year. Another measure of output is called “fixture lumens,” or the amount of light emanating from the complete unit. Competitors are all vying to build the most powerful light with the least amount of amp draw. A light with 1,100 fixture lumens today draws less than an amp, so it’s easier on power consumption.

ith improvements in manufacturing and increases in volume, LEDs have dropped in price. Therefore, one would expect the price of underwater lights to have plummeted as well. Price decreases have been reported in lower-end products; however, LEDs are only a small part of the overall cost of the lights and are more than offset by the cost of ever more-sophisticated electronics and optics. As everyone chases a lower cost per lumen, the lights are improving and therefore are not so much cheaper as they are better. “Today, you can purchase advanced color-changing lights for the price of simple one-color products of only a few years ago,” James said. So, as lights have become more feature rich, the price has remained level or decreased only slightly. High rates of adoption have driven the costs down a bit too. At the upper end, value is king. With improved output, Wi-Fi connectivity, more features and better functionality, the top end has stayed higher priced but provides much better value.
M A INTENA NCE & INSTA LL ATION: DIY?
This drive toward constant improvement in lumens per watt, lumens per dollar and lumens per fixture ensures continual innovation as customers look for the latest. However, Kujawa warns that boaters should be skeptical of lumen ratings, as there is no standardization in reporting across the industry. Light longevity is less of an issue today. LED manufacturers tout 30,000 to 50,000 hours of life, which can translate to 10 to 20 years of actual use on a boat. But LEDs are tested in a lab under ideal conditions, so some underwater light manufacturers are more comfortable with saying 20,000 hours. Without question, lights are living longer and will probably outlast some of the boats they’re on. One thing to keep in mind is that LEDs tend to vary in color — “blue” may not be “blue” if the bulbs were manufactured in different years. Lighting companies know this, so they tend to buy in bulk to have a large supply of color-consistent lights on hand. They also tend to differentiate their products by generation. “We’re about to change over to our Gen 5 product,” said Alexandra Bader, president of the Aqualuma division of Tides Marine. “We have an enormous supply of bulbs that we buy at the same time, so when one light fails six years down the road, we can supply a bulb that will match whatever is already installed on the boat.”
T
oday’s lights are easier to install, so boatyards need less time and labor to get more lights added to a hull, and for brave individuals willing to drill holes, it may be a do-it-yourself project. “It’s more DIY than you’d think,” Lumitec’s Kujawa said. “We give boaters a template and with four holes (from one-eighth to one-half of an inch) and a good bedding compound, they can install some lights, especially surface mounted, themselves.” Bader said Aqualuma created a manual on installation for boatyards. But boaters can use it too, she said. “Our templates are stickers, so you just adhere them to the hull and then drill the holes right through the template.” With today’s canister designs, most through-hull lights may be removed,

inspected and upgraded without a haulout, which saves time and money. Easy interchangeability is key to upgrading lights from the inside, and since LEDs can outlast fast-changing color and effects tastes, hassle-free upgrades are important. “Aqualuma has an upgrade program,”
Bader said. “If someone bought a boat that had our through-hull lights installed previously, we offer a discount to change out the guts but keep the canisters in place.” Underwater lights are now marketed as pre-programmed and packaged systems with add-ons, and that has made
installation simpler. Technical advances have created plug-and-play solutions with intuitive programming that are easier for boatyards, or even boaters, to wire up. Lumishore for example, markets its LumiHub, which is basically a junction box that can take up to four lights and simplifies all wiring. For easy maintenance, new lens technology has incorporated better antifouling coatings, such as OceanLED’s Tritoniumbased resin, which simply wipes clean of marine growth without the need for potentially damaging scrubbing by a diver. However, warranties on the component parts (LEDs, chassis and controllers) may vary, and the risk of damage during installation or in the course of regular maintenance by a diver or a boatyard pressure-washer is a concern. Today, sophisticated lighting effects
are reaching down to boats less than 30 feet. Once the realm of superyachts and sportfishers, underwater lights are infiltrating all segments of the market as smaller, more purpose-built vessels — think center console fishing boats and runabouts — get into the game. Surface-mounted lights are finding their way onto pontoon boats whose owners
want to create their own nighttime party ambiance. Polymer housings are ideal for the aluminum tritoons that are the fastestgrowing segment of the boating market. “Our SeaBlaze Mini Spectrum lights can be mounted with the cord coming out the side (not through the hull) so they can be mounted on pontoons in various ways,” Kujawa said. Even towboat manufacturers are taking an interest. Due to limited time to practice, wakesurfers for example, will go out after work and run in the dark, and because they surf so close to the boat, lights are a necessity. OceanLED’s Deheer agrees that the market has gone from “Why do I need those?” to “I want those.” Not only have underwater lights proliferated into new segments of the market, they have also multiplied per vessel. It’s not unusual today to see a 70-footer showcase six to eight lights. The aftermarket for retrofits is growing, too, as boaters get lighting envy.

he underwater lights of 20 years ago may have been underwhelming but much has changed. Now the customer has become more educated and therefore more discerning, and boaters know there are a few things to sort through. When adding or replacing lights, the first thing to decide is how sophisticated the lighting needs to be. Most companies offer product families according to functionality and price, to make it easier to choose. “We have three series based on color,” said Lumishore’s James. “Ora is single color, SUPRA is dual and the EOS is our full-color-spectrum line of lights.” After that, it’s just a matter of figuring out how many, where to put them, and who will install them. And then, it’s party time.

FROM TRADING POST TO COMPANY TOWN, ROCHE HARBOR NOW HAS THE WEST COAST’S PREMIER RESORTS. STORY AND PHOTOS BY DEANE HISLOP
ROCHE HARBOR RESORT (ROCHEHARBOR.COM), ON San Juan Island, has come a long way from its beginnings when Hudson’s Bay Co. built a trading post at the head of Roche Harbor in 1845. Joe Ruff homesteaded the property after the British abandoned it, and in 1881 the Scurr brothers, Robert and Richard, bought the property with intentions to launch the area’s lime industry. In the mid-1880s, John McMillin bought out the Scurr brothers and formed the Roche Harbor Lime Co., and Roche Harbor became a full-fledged company

town. At the height of its glory, the town was home to about 800 people. McMillin died in 1936 and his youngest son, Paul, managed the company until he sold it and all the land in 1956 to Reuben Tarte. At the time the lime had run out and the village was dilapidated, but Tarte envisioned making Roche Harbor the best marina and resort on the West Coast. The
facilities today are the direct result of the Tarte family’s efforts. The entire Tarte family had a hand in transforming the lime works into a resort and marina. Every structure on the SANTAClara CRUZ grounds at Roche Harbor has a story. Tarte, Reuben’s wife, brought the resort’s famous flower gardens back to life and had the little church on the hill consecrated as Our Lady of Good Voyage Chapel. Today, the chapel’s carillon call provides calm over the harbor. The family rebuilt the Hotel de Haro 1 , converted the McMillin home into a restaurant and bar, and built the tennis courts, pool and airstrip. They also installed underground wiring to serve the resort and marina. The Tarte family sold Roche Harbor in 1989 to a partnership, and the facility has continued to grow and improve as the years have gone by.

BOAT SHOW EXPANDS
THE SEATTLE BOAT Show, produced by the Northwest Marine Trade Association and the Northwest Yacht Brokers Association, is about to get even bigger. For the 2018 show, Jan. 26 – Feb. 3, there will be a third venue, at Bell Harbor Marina, in addition to the traditional locations at CenturyLink Field Event Center and Chandler’s Cove in South Lake Union. Bell Harbor is within walking distance of the events center and only takes minutes by shuttle bus. “Every year we move hundreds of boats into CenturyLink Field Event Center and we continually sell out of boat display space,” said Seattle Boat Show Director Katie McPhail. “Bell Harbor Marina simply gives NMTA members another display option in close proximity to the stadium. Now with three locations, the big Seattle Boat Show is literally all over the city.” Visit SeattleBoatShow.com for more information.

QUICK ESCAPE
WELL-ROUNDED VALLEJO
Training Ship Golden Bear enjoys the setting near Vallejo and Mare Island
ONE OF THE MOST DIVERSE CITIES IN THE U.S., VALLEJO WAS THE CAPITAL OF CALIFORNIA ONCE — NO, TWICE. ON SAN PABLO BAY, A northern lobe of San Francisco Bay, sits the town of Vallejo, whose downtown area and marine facilities on the Napa River are protected by Mare Island. Whether as a base of operations for a weekend excursion or the jumping off point for a waterborne cruise to wine country or the California Delta, Vallejo has much to recommend itself to boaters. For provisioning, the options are many, but one of the newest and trending establishments is the Grocery Outlet 1 , which is right on the waterfront of the Napa River.
WHERE TO MOOR
The Vallejo Municipal Marina 2 is at the north end of the Downtown Marina Waterfront, nearly abutting the Mare Island Causeway 3 . The guest docks include 30and 50-amp power, and the marina has two free onsite pumpouts, a boatyard and a chandlery. The guest docks are closed during the weekend at Vallejo Municipal Marina, but boaters who make arrangements ahead of time can be accommodated. Call (707) 544-2813 for more information.

GRUB HUB The marina has a couple of options for boaters to rest their sea legs and have a good meal. The Sardine Can 4 is a casual SANTA CRUZ bar and eatery serving up sustainable seafood and steak dishes. The restaurant often has live jazz bands on the weekend, and plenty of outdoor seating means patrons can enjoy the river views. Not far SEATTLE
Vallejo, Calif. southeast of The Sardine Can is the upscale Italian restaurant Zio Fraedo’s 5 , which has classic Italian dishes and a full bar.
Sherry’s Sports Bar is inside the restaurant, where patrons can catch a great happy hour Monday through Saturday. The California State University Maritime Academy is in Vallejo. It trains merchant marines, who experience life aboard T.S. Golden Bear.

peninsula got its name from Gen. Mariano Guadalupe Vallejo, commander of the Mexican cavalry, who thought his favorite mare was lost. It was found on a peninsula that he consequently dubbed Mare Island. After more than a century of military use, Mare Island was decommissioned in 1996 and is now a tourist destination that includes abandoned buildings, the Mare Island Museum and Historical Park, grand officers’ homes, and the West Coast’s oldest naval cemetery. Boaters who moor at the marina will likely spy the Mare Island Causeway, which juts over the Napa River. Requests to pass through the novel bridge are by sound signal (one prolonged blast followed by one short blast), visual signal (raise and lower a white, amber or green flag vertically), by marine radio (Channel 13), or by calling (707) 562-3556. The bridge links Mare Island to the greater Vallejo area, and on the waterways it is a gateway to Napa Valley via the river. In the downtown area is the popular Good Day Café 8 on Georgia Street a few blocks inland from the marina. Near it is a curious clock tower on the sidewalk. The Alibi Clock 9 once stood on Market Street in San Francisco but was relocated to Vallejo in 1932. It was the critical piece of evidence that pardoned a wrongfully convicted person by proving in a photo that the suspect was nowhere near the crime scene. Mare Island used to be a shipyard, but has undergone changes, including a conduit project (top) and the loss of its smokestack (bottom right). Some of its buildings are no longer in use, but it’s worth a visit during a stop in Vallejo.
The bar has daily specials that include Taco Tuesday and Wacky Wednesday, so make sure to check the website for what’s new. The Vallejo Farmers Market 6 every Saturday morning is a big draw to the downtown area by the waterfront. The morning I visited, the air was filled with delicious scents and vibrant colors and characters. There are plenty of meal options as well as craft vendors and, of course, many options for fresh fruits and vegetables. This particular market is also known to have the lowest prices around the Bay Area.
PLACES TO SEE About a mile from the marina is the Vallejo Naval and Historical Museum 7 . Learn about the rich history of the area, from being the state capital (twice!) to being a railroad hub to being a major naval installation through the years. The museum also has rotating exhibits; currently on display is one commemorating the 100th anniversary of World War I. Admission is $5 for adults, $3 for seniors and students, and children under 12 are free. Mare Island is not an island, nor does it have any horses inhabiting it. The
HOP, SKIP, JUMP Many different ferry lines service Vallejo, taking visitors to various other Bay Area cities and sights, such as Oakland, the San Francisco Ferry Building and Pier 41. One way to visit more of the area conveniently and with fewer mooring stops would be to moor in Vallejo and take the ferry elsewhere.

MEET EVERETTE HOARD COMMODORE, QUEEN MARY
QUEEN MARY’S HISTORY STRETCHES BACK more than 80 years, from her keel-laying in 1930 to her launching in 1934 to her military service during World War II to her golden post-war years to her final eastbound Atlantic crossing in 1967 to her residency in Long Beach later that year. haunted it’s this one. Queen Mary is really the only surviving ship of an entire golden age of ocean travel. She carries the soul of all of those ships, if you will. On Sept. 26, 1934, Queen Mary was launched. The king and the royal family were there, as well as Winston Churchill. I believe King George V spoke the soul into the ship that day. He said these words: “No longer will she be a number on the books, but a ship with a name in the world, alive with beauty, energy and strength. We now have the happy task today to send forth on her way the stateliest ship now in being. May she be a place where the people of all races come together as students and leave as friends.” And then Queen Mary announced the name of the ship, of her own namesake. There was a psychic who spoke too. Lady Mable Fortiscue-Harrison announced a prediction — it was in all the local papers — that Queen Mary will “know her greatest fame and popularity when she never sails another mile or carries another fare-paying passenger.” What a compelling insight!
Queen Mary is the last ship of its kind from the golden age of ocean travel and allegedly hosts some ghosts in the machinery areas.
Commodore Everette Hoard has been with Queen Mary for some time, beginning his career in 1981 and taking over as commodore in 2009. His current position is chiefly an ambassadorial role, which includes officiating wedding ceremonies, entertaining VIPs, conducting extensive media work, giving lectures and undergoing historical research.
Given the ship’s long history, she’s had time to accumulate some ghosts. We asked Hoard about some of the history — and the paranormal activity aboard. Sea: Why do you suppose the ship has a reputation for being “haunted”? Hoard: In a way the ship is hallowed ground, but certainly if any ship has the right to be
What are the spooky stories associated with the ship? In the 1950s one of the second officers was told by the staff captain that he could stop by his cabin and have a drink. So when second officer Stark got to the staff captain’s cabin, he poured himself a drink from a bottle of gin. Halfway through the drink he realized it wasn’t gin but dry cleaning fluid. He laughed about it and went down to the ship surgeon to make sure he’d be OK. The doctor said he would be fine in the morning. But in the morning, he was literally vomiting up pieces of his stomach and he bled to death. Another fellow, a young engineer around 18 years old, had only been on Queen Mary

for three voyages, after one of the worst seaman strikes to ever hit the Cunard line. He was going down shaft alley on the starboard side, oiling the shaft slot, which had to be oiled by hand. He came to a watertight door, and upon opening the door, for whatever reason, he did not make it to the other side. A one-and-a-half-ton door closed on him and he was found with his arms crossed over his chest and pinned directly in the door. But the door was found to be in perfect working order. To this day no one can conclude what happened to that young man, whose ghost has been spotted in shaft alley time and time again. And if you go down there in the depths of night it’s eerie; you can definitely feel a presence. Can you tell us about Dark Harbor and what visitors can expect? With Queen Mary having such a vibrant personality herself in the paranormal aspect, a few years ago we started doing an annual Halloween event, Dark Harbor. The mazes are not only custom built outside the ship, but they go into the bowels of the ship as well, into the former boiler room and all sorts of engineering spaces. Queen Mary, being 80,000 tons, is a giant catacomb of horror! There are some of the best monsters you can imagine running around and sliding across the parking lot. There is food and drink; the R.I.P. Lounge, which has a viewing area of all the festivities outside; and half of a sunken ship in the parking lot, with flames shooting up into the sky. Aside from the Halloween season, there are different paranormal tours we offer year round. They come in different qualities. Visit QueenMary.com to find out more.

MODERN MYTHOLOGY
DRAGON BOAT RACING IS GROWING IN POPULARITY IN THE U.S, BUT ITS ROOTS GO BACK MILLENNIA TO THE OTHER SIDE OF THE WORLD. BY STEPHANIE SHIBATA
DRAGON BOAT FESTIVALS HAVE BEEN around for more than two millennia. They are traditionally held on the fifth day of the fifth month of the lunar calendar, to commemorate the death of Qu Yuan, a legendary hero and poet, who, according to ancient Chinese folklore, jumped into a river during the Zhou Dynasty. The locals cared greatly about him, so they rushed onto boats in an attempt to rescue him. They beat drums to scare the fish away from his body and threw rice dumplings into the water to prevent the fish from eating him. The reenactment of this event gradually evolved into the dragon boat races and festivals we know today. Dragon boat racing in modern times encourages teamwork, and California is home to several dragon boat festivals that are fun for the whole family. The largest race in California is held in the Bay Area. Organized by the California Dragon Boat Association at Lake Merritt in Oakland, the Northern California International Dragon Boat Festival pits 40-foot dragon boats against one another in races all weekend at an admission-free event full of fun activities and spectacles everyone will enjoy. Scheduled for Sept. 23–24 this year, the event will include multicultural shows both days of the festival, including traditional dances, magic shows, taiko drumming, hip hop dances and Chinese acrobats. The San Diego Dragon Boat Race is held on Mission Bay each year in the fall. This year’s race, sure to include colorful boats, camaraderie, vendor booths, food and more, is Sept. 30–Oct. 1.
TRADITIONS The main traditions associated with dragon boat racing, besides the actual racing, include eating rice dumplings, which are filled with assorted meats or

eggs and wrapped in banana leaves, and balancing raw eggs so they stand upright. It is thought that the Earth’s gravitational pull is at its strongest at noon on the fifth day of the fifth month according to the lunar calendar, so it’s possible to balance eggs this way (so the events around the state this fall might not be the best for egg balancing). Folks who balance the egg at noon are said to have earned good luck for the year. Families in China also hang up mugwort plants to deter pests and disease from
entering their home.
A MODERN TAKE Here in the U.S., many marinas and lakes all around the country host dragon boat races year round. There is a race for all skill levels, from beginner squads to advanced world championship teams. The races attract hundreds of thousands of visitors who come for the races and stay for the celebration of cultural heritage through music, dancing, drums, martial arts, songs
and always an abundance of Asian food. Local community organizations, high school groups and businesses often create teams and participate in the races. Paddlers in training learn strength, endurance, form, mental focus and, most importantly, timing. A conditioned team of paddlers has nearly perfect synchronization in their paddling. Dragon boat festivals have become great community relationship builders with many groups coming together to have fun and enjoy Chinese culture,

ancient and contemporary. Modern dragon boat races can be quite competitive, according to Andi Liskay, president of the San Diego Dragon Boats. Each crew is composed of 22 people — 20 paddlers, one drummer, and one steerperson — and each crew races against the other crews for time. Based on each crew’s times, they will advance to various divisions to compete against other crews that have similar times. Basically, there is a Division A (top crews) and a Division B for recreational crews. Some festivals have more divisions. There are competitive and recreational teams throughout California. Local teams are often looking for team members, for

anyone who is interested in trying it. Dragon boat paddlers are about community and will always help newbies get on the water with a team. The type of folks who normally gravitate to dragon boat racing tend to be people who like watersports and competition, but just about anyone can participate. People of any age can paddle a dragon boat — usually from 12 years old up to 80 years young. The activity’s popularity has grown in the United States, because of its universal appeal — a great full-body workout, competitions all over the world and the lifelong friendships formed with teammates.

SD LAUNCH RAMP RECEIVES UPGRADES
CORONADO AND THE Port of San
Diego officially reopened Glorietta Bay’s upgraded boat launch ramp July 17, giving local boaters and PWC users a modernized venue with new amenities. The opening of Glorietta Bay’s boat launch ramp coincided with the near closure of a similar venue at Shelter Island, whose 10-lane boat launch ramp was temporarily whittled to one lane for the summer as port district officials began construction work on the planned upgrades there. New additions at the boat launch ramp are a non-motorized craft launch area, a sandy beach and a boat washdown area.

FORMER OCEANSIDE HARBOR
Manager Paul C. Lawrence officially ended his tenure at San Diego County’s northernmost boating venue June 16, opening the door for a new marine professional to succeed him in managing the waterfront. City officials appointed an interim and announced the search for a new harbormaster. Lawrence’s successor will be responsible for overseeing harbor operations, maintenance and administration.

brokerage advice // buying and selling tips // brokerage listings //
OCTOBER QUESTION:
I’m still in the “I know I want a boat but I’m not sure how to go about it” phase. What are some things I need to know at this stage? FOR AN ANSWER to this month’s question, we consulted the National Marine Bankers Association’s publication “Understanding Boat Financing.” In the section titled Before You Shop for a Boat, we find the following. Do your financial homework and run a budget, check your credit history, and consider getting pre-qualified for a boat purchase. Before you visit the boat dealer or buy a boat:
• Determine how much you can afford in a monthly payment. • Your credit score is more important than ever. Obtain a copy so that you have the chance to correct any misinformation that could impact your ability to obtain financing or a more favorable rate.
• Credit reports disclose your payment history for paid and current credit obligations, as well as any public records and consumer statements you may have added. Any negative reporting is problematic, so check closely for errors and work with the credit reporting agency to correct before going any further. If there are public records that have been resolved but appear to still be open issues on the report, have them updated. Most lenders expect credit scores above 700 and no public records. Some lenders will work with you, even with lower scores, if the problems are behind you and new credit has since been established. • Boat loan interest rates, though driven by current economic markets, are generally based on your past history in paying loans to financial institutions. This is measured by your credit score, found on your credit report. The higher your credit score, the more favorable your interest rate may be with a particular lender. If you
are financing with a dealer or a service company, be sure your credit history and lender options are discussed before your loan application is submitted.
• Compare current finance rates from various lending sources. Discuss loan qualifications so you know what is required to obtain financing. This will help you determine if there are any restrictions on getting the best rate available. Ask the dealer for any special manufacturer incentives or finance programs that may be available on new boats. • Loan terms, your monthly payment and your cost of a boat loan are related. Typical boat loans have 10- to 15-year terms, compared to car loans that are generally five to eight years, depending on the amount borrowed. Remember, it is always the wisest choice to finance your boat at the lowest term that allows the monthly payment to fit into your budget. • Fixed-rate vs. variable-rate loans. Look for fixed-rate, simple interest loans. Variable-rate loans often offer a low “introductory” rate but have payment-adjustment features that could significantly raise your payment and interest expense. If you are considering a variable-rate loan, be sure there is enough difference in the interest rate, compared to a fixed rate, to make it worth the gamble.
• Check boat buying guides, websites, and other resources to determine what your needs are in a boat and where you can find a dealer with that product. Read boat reviews and pre-owned pricing guides to become better informed about values on both new and pre-owned boats. — MarineLenders.org
