THE POWER OF GROUPS

A GROUP CRUISE IS a great way to gain expe-

rience cruising in a new area. Such cruises can either take place on one’s own boat — CUBAR, Baja Ha Ha — or on a chartered boat such as with the Mother Goose Flotilla arranged every year by the folks at NW Explorations. Group cruises have the advantage of being planned by veterans of a particular route or area, and they often include an educational component and pre-arranged fuel stops and events. Everybody feels safer, better prepared and, by the end, smarter. Our cruising feature that opens on page 30 is taken from one such group adventure, the aforementioned Mother Goose Flotilla. The NW Explorations folks led a 16-week adventure from Bellingham up the Inside Passage to Alaska and back again, and members of the team kept a running blog of the group’s time on the water. We snagged entries from legs five and six of the trip to create our story, and we selected these particular legs because they chronicled the flotilla’s time in a triangle 6

from Juneau to Elfin Cove to Skagway, without a stop in Glacier Bay. We did so not because Glacier Bay isn’t worth the coverage — it absolutely is, and we’ve featured it many times — but rather because we saw this as a “road less traveled” story. And if not less traveled, then certainly less written about. Dundas Bay. Haines. William Henry Bay. Hoonah. Lesser-known names with interesting stories. The group had fun and saw and experienced fascinating things — Elfin Cove’s namesake creatures, bubblenet-feeding humpback whales, a fish-tossing contest, a movie set turned tourist attraction — and Sea readers can be vicarious passengers by turning to page 30. And if the story whets anyone’s appetite for more, the rest of the story is at NWExplorations.com. Also in the group cruise theme is this month’s Mexico Report on page 14. Capt. Pat Rains talked to several CUBAR and Baja Ha Ha veterans and used her own experience to offer tips to any boater considering making the cruise down the Baja Peninsula to the Sea of Cortez. She directs the column at boat owners making the journey solo, and the advice, while gathered from experts at group excursions, is easily applicable to a crew of six, four or two.

ITS CARBON FIBER HULL IS AN EYE-PLEASER, BUT AN EXCLUSIVE AUDIO FEATURE IS SURE TO HAVE FOLKS SAYING, “HUH?”

Imagine you are diving in a pleasant setting. A reef full of colorful fish is just beyond your mask, an eel pokes its head from a crevice, a turtle drifts by, music reaches your ears and soundtracks your dive. Wait. Music? Yep, the Pershing 8X hull can transmit music. Called Music Hull, the system was created by the Ferretti Group engineering department and Videoworks and can turn the 83-foot, 10-inch hull into a loudspeaker that transforms the underwater sphere into a concert arena. ABBA and the anemones. Another feature that sets the 8X apart from most other yachts in its segment is its composition. It’s built of carbon fiber, a material that’s light and strong and leads to gains in speed and fuel efficiency. A few builders are utilizing carbon fiber, and more will follow. Sleek, sporty and powerful, the Pershing 8X can reach almost 50 knots with upgraded twin MTU 16V 2000 M96L diesels, each providing 2,638 hp. Standard power comes from twin MTU 16V 2000 M96 engines with 2,435 hp. The 8X tops out at 45 knots and cruises at 38 with those powerplants. Owners can choose a three- or four-stateroom layout — a full-beam master

is standard in both configurations — with three heads. A lower salon can replace the fourth stateroom. The galley is belowdecks and aft of the accommodations, near the crew quarters. On the main deck, a salon (aft), a dining area (middle) and a triple-seat helm (forward) fill the well-lit space. Pershing designers even found a way to include a sunroof above the helm, forward of the flybridge. Outdoor spaces include a large cockpit with two settees and a triple sunpad, a bow that features a settee with chaise-like ends and another multiple-person sun lounge, and a flybridge with yet another sun lounge, a settee and a triple-seat helm (either a bench or individual chairs).

Your Brain on Boats

Discover Boating released some research that indicates being on the water can make human beings happier and healthier. According to the findings: • Boating resets our brains. Water relaxes, restores and helps us reconnect. • Boating is awe-inspiring. Awe and wonder change our body and mind for the better. • Boating induces creativity. Feel-good hormones reduce stress and water-related play sparks creativity. • Boating appeals to our

senses. The sight and sound of water increases brain and blood flow. • 72% of Americans feel healthier after spending time on the water • 84% of parents think their kids would be more likely to unplug on a boat trip vs. a road trip • 142 million Americans go boating every year.

MEXICO REPORT

TIPS FOR CRUISING DOWN BAJA Let the experience of others create a framework for safe passage all the way to the Sea of Cortez.

RIGHT NOW, MORE THAN 3,000 U.S. boaters

are planning their excursion down Mexico’s 750-mile Baja California Peninsula, but Baja’s Pacific coast isn’t as hospitable as the rest of Mexico, so it presents some challenges. I’ve participated more than 40 times in this annual southbound migration and have learned a few tricks about running this route and preparing the boat and crew. I give seminars on this topic every fall, but don’t take my word for anything. Let me share a batch of the best tips and nuggets of wisdom gleaned from a dozen other veteran Mexico boaters, many of whom also consult and present seminars to yacht clubs, rendezvous gatherings, and to CUBAR powerboaters and Baja Ha Ha sailors.

COMMUNICATIONS Get a two-way communicator to stay in touch via text with everyone from the U.S. Coast Guard and Mexican Navy to people on a boat 10 miles ahead of you and relatives who are worried sick you’re visiting a foreign country. Spot X and Garmin InReach are two examples, and the latter is a compact two-way longdistance satellite communicator that is required safety equipment for all CUBAR 2019 boats.   Satellite phones can be expensive up front, but they can hold emergency numbers for the Coast Guard and Mexican Navy, and the panic button will call search-and-rescue authorities. Be sure to enter cellphone numbers for buddy boaters and land numbers for marinas and relatives back

home into the sat phone and the two-way communicator. Iridium was the most common brand used by Mexico boaters in 2018, according to Richard Spindler of the Baja Ha Ha, but new tech gets invented each year. Cellphone coverage is good in Ensenada, but it extends less than 10 miles beyond the shore towers. Expect voids along remote stretches of Pacific Baja. Unlock U.S. cellphones in the U.S. and then buy a Mexican SIM card in Mexico and have it installed; popular brands are TelCel, Movistar and ATT. A well-installed cellphone booster antenna can amplify incoming cell signals, which improves access to the internet. Many marinas offer Wi-Fi, and a different signalboosting antenna helps here too. VHF networks are wonderful within marinas and ports throughout Mexico, but vast dead zones exist in some coastal waters and offshore, because VHF radio is only “line

ENGINE ROOM

Don’t underestimate the value of a dinghy for cruising in Mexico. Just be sure to practice beach landing and launching ahead of time. Also, test the boat’s davit, so it can be dropped and retrieved without incident, like Capt. Assen Alexandrov is doing (left).

of sight.”   Single sideband nets link hundreds of boaters over 1,000 miles, so it’s versatile and popular with experienced Mexico cruisers. But an SSB radio and antenna require professional installation to eliminate the frustrating “static bugs” caused by other electronics.   AIS interfaced with a boat’s radar and chartplotter is considered safety gear for both communications and navigation. During professional installation and offshore sea trials, verify the boat can be seen — boat name, MMSI number and description — by other vessels eight to 10 miles distant. Don’t be shy about hailing other vessels by their name, location, course and speed; this is exactly how AIS eliminates confusion and saves lives.

Seawater temperatures in southern Baja, the Sea of Cortez and mainland Mexico can be hotter than U.S. West Coast waters by 10 degrees or more, which affects raw-water intakes, cooling systems (on engines, generators and air conditioning) and water-makers. “Diesel Bob” Senter of Northern Lights said owners should plan to inspect sea strainers more frequently underway and be prepared to clean them of algae, leaf litter and the occasional plastic bag. When cooling systems are under strain, everything in the engine room heats up, so keep a closer eye on temperature and pressure gauges down there, not just on bridge repeaters.

PEOPLE COMFORT During the voyage down Baja, the galley will be in motion, so keep nourishment simple with finger foods such as chicken nuggets, sandwiches and wraps. Prepare and freeze a few dinner entrees in advance, then defrost, reheat and serve them during bumpy offshore legs — San Quintin to Turtle Bay, Turtle Bay to Mag Bay, Mag Bay to Los Cabos. “Our air conditioning quit before we turned the corner at Cabo San Lucas,” said a veteran cruiser, “and it got so bloody hot we couldn’t sleep.” The tip here is to service and/or upgrade the entire air-conditioning system before departure, and install small (10-inch) wall-mounted fans in the galley, dining area, bridge and berths. If the boat’s vinyl windshield coverings don’t reflect heat away, consider upgrading them. Screens on opening ports are smart because they allow cross ventilation when the air isn’t running. Only a few places in the Sea of Cortez have no-see-ums, those biting gnats so tiny they penetrate normal screen mesh at sunrise and sunset. Instead of toxic Deet, spray exposed skin with Ranger Ready, which is 20 percent picaridin. Or close up the boat and run the A/C.

GROUND TACKLE & DINGHY

No marinas exist between Ensenada and Cabo San Lucas, so boaters anchor whenever they get a chance. Mexico has thousands of remote anchorages and only about 40 full-service marinas, so cruisers anchor overnight more frequently than most of them do stateside, and they use a dinghy for daily errands. For details on all Pacific Baja’s anchorages and marinas, check out “Mexico Boating Guide.” If your primary anchor and winch setup is not good enough to keep the boat secure in heavy weather on an unknown bottom, then beef up the weak spots — anchor, connectors, chain, roller, gypsy head, windlass motor — and test the setup at anchor in a current. Assemble a complete secondary ground-tackle system that also works off the bow and a simple stern-anchor setup. Even if they stay stowed most of the time, they should be available in a flash. Make sure the chain markings are easy to read.   Pretend you’re cruising. If you plan to anchor out at least half the time, I suggest you get the largest and most comfortable inflatable dinghy and outboard you can easily haul out of the water every night. In less-developed ports and most remote anchorages in Mexico and Central America, the standard cruising practice is to not leave a dinghy in the water overnight.   Get acquainted with your dinghy’s abilities, its pros and cons, by using the heck out of it stateside, where you can more easily make gear changes. Learn how to perform: •  Safe beach landings with limited crew, three bags of garbage, and the dog. •  Safe beach launching into medium surf with limited crew, three bags of groceries, three bags of clean laundry and the dog.   If you have only a hard dinghy that can’t be beached, consider adding an auxiliary inflatable and outboard. Dinghy wheels are a popular option for getting the dink above the tidal zone and for rolling it down the beach to launch.

DRIPLESS SHAFT SEAL (SEE NEXT PAG E )

CUTLESS BEARING

DO YOU KNOW THE DRIVETRAIN? Every boat owner should know how to inspect these three components.

A VESSEL’S DRIVETRAIN IS typically defined as the components between the engine transmission coupling and the “bitter end” of the propeller shaft. For traditional drivetrains, this includes the propeller, shaft, cutless bearing and packing gland, although the list could be expanded to encompass ancillary items such as the rudder, engine mounts, and engine bedworks. Here’s a look at three major drivetrain components you should know, and what to look for when inspecting each. 16

1

PROP

1

Propeller

Look for nicks, dings, cracks, and corrosion on the prop, while also looking for rolled tips or bent blades. Blades that are distorted or even slightly out of true due to “soft damage” — a result of running through silt or sand, for example — can decrease performance and cause vibration. Worse still, blade damage is rarely uniform, so imbalance vibrations can cause additional damage to engines, drives and transmissions. Props with worn blades can also allow an engine to accelerate beyond its recommended rpm, possibly causing engine damage.

2

Cutless Bearing

First, it’s spelled cutless (not cutlass), but what exactly is it and what does it do? A cutless bearing supports the propeller shaft of a vessel while allowing it to turn freely without damage. Cutless bearings are typically made of brass with an interior rubber lining, which contains grooves running the length of the bearing. These groves allow water to enter the cutless bearing to keep everything cool and lubricated while the shaft rotates within. Problems occur when the bearing lining (and grooves) wear down, which reduces the flow of cooling water and introduces looseness or play in the bearing. To determine if a cutless bearing needs to be replaced, look for signs of wear or deterioration of the rubber at both ends of the bearing. Rapid or unusual wear patterns (e.g., top wear on one end of the bearing, bottom wear on the other) are indications of significant shaft misalignment issues that should be addressed immediately. Next, simply grab the prop or shaft and give it a couple of good, firm shakes to detect shaft looseness within the bearing. Slight movement — say 1/16 inch or so — is borderline, but if you can produce visible shaft wiggle or an audible “thunk” when shaking the prop, the bearing is definitely due for replacement.

ASK THE EXPERTS

Stuffing Box

Only boats with inboard engines have stuffing boxes. To locate the one on your boat, trace the propeller shaft from the transmission to the point where it exits the hull. That’s where the stuffing box will be, unless you have a dripless-style shaft seal installed. The purpose of a stuffing box is to allow the propeller shaft to exit the hull while keeping

water out. The shaft is sealed by compressing packing material against it, most often by using a hollow nut that screws onto a matching fitting attached to the the inboard side of the shaft log hose. Another common style features a tightening arrangement that uses a plate secured by nuts and studs on either side of the shaft. The more you tighten either type of gland,

the more the packing gets compressed against the shaft. Most packing consists of a square plaited material and comes either as traditional greased (or waxed) flax, or a more modern version impregnated with Teflon. Corrosion and leaks are common problems you’ll encounter when inspecting a stuffing box. The shaft log hose, which connects the stuffing box to the hull in most installations, should also be inspected for deterioration due to age, corroded hose clamps, etc. Water helps lubricate the packing material, so it’s OK for a stuffing box to leak a few drips, three to four per minute, while the vessel is underway. More than that amount, say 10 drops per minute, or drips while the shaft is not turning indicates the need for adjustment or maintenance. A leaking stuffing box can cause numerous issues, from corrosion (the spinning shaft slings excess water all over the engine compartment) to sinking, particularly if the boat is left unattended in the water for longer periods of time. Packing material will harden over time, as the lubricant dries out, and gets worn away by shaft rotation, which will allow water to pass and enter the vessel. When this happens, most people simply tighten the packing gland to compress the packing material and stop or reduce the leak. This works to a point, but as the packing gets smaller it also gets harder. Keep compressing it and it will eventually score the propeller shaft, which will then have to be replaced before the stuffing box will seal properly. Avoid such problems by simply replacing the packing on a regular basis.

3

Dripless Shaft Seals

Dripless shaft seals are an alternative to packing glands. They prevent water from entering the hull via pressure loading, typically by using a compressed rubber bellows to hold a graphite collar against a stainless steel collar. High-speed vessel installations will usually have a water injection hose plumbed to the engine’s raw-water cooling systems, which helps reduce heat generated between the two contact surfaces. While they don’t require repacking like traditional stuffing boxes, dripless shaft seals still have regularly scheduled maintenance requirements that must be carried out to ensure proper operation. These include periodic removal and inspection, as well as keeping the cooling hose clear and open.

SEA TRIAL

By CAPT. TOM SERIO

FORMULA

380 SUPER SPORT CROSSOVER As a crossover vessel, the 380 SSC can fulfill multiple missions, and do it all with a heightened sense of cool.

AS I WALKED DOW N the dock, half in a daze, a voice bellowed

from behind: “You must be Tom!” I’m not sure but I think the camera bag slung over my shoulder was a dead giveaway, since everyone else was carrying coolers and beach toys. It was Vic Spellberg, my Formula Boats-appointed captain for the day. Half startled, we exchanged greetings as we walked toward the new Formula 380 Super Sport Crossover.

Tester’s Opinion 22

With social spaces fore and aft (opposite page), the 380 SSC puts its dayboat chops on display.

The Formula 380 SSC is a roomy, fast, good-handling boat. There are so many cool features on board I wonder why it took so long to think of them. I enjoyed the response from the Mercury Racing engines, and the fabulous handling.

+Sea Trial Formula.indd 22

8/29/19 9:41 AM

My daze wasn’t hangover related, but rather induced by my just having seen a vision. Before Spellberg woke me from my semi-trance, I spotted the 380 down the ways, displaying a beefy side profile and a proportional house-to-hull-size ratio and glistening under the morning sun. I wanted to learn more and get underway. Understand that the name tells a lot about the 380 SSC. As a Super Sport Crossover, the 380 (and the builder’s other SSC models) is designed by Formula to do just about anything owners desire. The SSC’s mission is to offer boating of many different kinds, from dayboat versatility to watersports enjoyment to overnight/ weekend comforts. Add into the equation performance, seaworthiness, and fantastic speed and handling when needed, and it’s apparent that Formula has created a high coolness quotient for the 380. A single-level main deck is surrounded on three sides by an integrated framed windshield and side windows that support a stout hardtop that features an electric sunroof. There’s protection from the elements here and sunning areas fore and aft on the 380 SSC.

TAKE A BOW

Access to the open bow is noteworthy. Many boats offer access to the foredeck via a center walkway. Formula offsets the path to port, which creates a nearly perfect circular

seating area up front and maximizes space utilization in the lower cabin. That’s right, a lower cabin in a bowrider. More on that shortly. A sliding windshield panel — no fighting a flopping hinged window — and a lower clear door offer access to the bow area and create a much cleaner look. Seating on the bow is generous. A C-shaped settee offers comfortable lounging for at least six adults. Two Coriantopped pedestal tables can be dropped

The SSC’s mission is to offer boating of many different kinds, from dayboat versatility to overnight/weekend comforts. into floor holders, with one or both utilized at any time. The tabletops can be used to fill the open area and filler cushions can be installed atop them to make one large sunpad. Stereo controls with dedicated speakers and a subwoofer, a dedicated cooler, six drink holders and a sunshade with stainless supports are all available. A cutout in the forward-facing seat in front of the helm contains a fixed window to the lower cabin. A blackout screen to keep out the morning sun is included. While

this is a slide-over screen, it would be nice for Formula to place it on the inside of the cabin, not the outside, for easier access.

AT THE CON

Amidships to starboard is the helm, whose angled dash houses twin 16-inch Raymarine Axiom multifunction displays in a Liquid Black floating panel. The console houses a leather-wrapped tilt steering wheel, a Mercury Marine SmartCraft VesselView engine monitoring display, several banks of switches, an ICOM VHF, a Rockford Fosgate stereo controller, three AC vents and more. To the right are Mercury digital throttle controls, Mercury Joystick Piloting features and a Bennett trim tab controller. Everything is within reach and easy to operate. Wide enough for three people, the helm seat offers exceptional support and adjustments for standing or sitting. A grabrail is mounted across the front of the dash, and I found that to be a smart touch, because this is a spry vessel. When Spellberg fired up the twin Mercury Racing 520 hp gas engines — they feature multiport electronic fuel injection and on our test boat were connected to Bravo Three sterndrives — I heard the throaty rumble of the high-performance powerplants, just enough growl to let everyone know something special lurks under the hood. The cruising sweet spot on test day was at 3000 rpm, at which the boat was SEAMAGAZINE.COM OCTOBER 2019

CABIN COMFORTS

As I mentioned, a full-beam cabin belowdecks is mainly situated under the helm station. Able to accommodate four people, the cabin has 6 feet, 5 inches of headroom; it’s a great feature, especially on a bowrider. Forward is

The ride was effortless as we skimmed the light chop, and bowrise was minimal. Just remove the plug from the stanchion and the support fits right in.

MAIN ATTRACTION

In the cockpit is a U-shaped settee to starboard. A couple of things happen here. First, there are two separate Corian cockpit tables, which can be used together or individually. For ease of access, the tabletops stow in dedicated slots under the seats. Second, the tabletops can be used to support filler cushions and turn the settee area into another large lounge. In addition, the two aft seat backrests flip forward and create an additional sunpad/lounge oasis with an aft-facing view, which is perfect for watching action in the water. Additional seating is to port. Closer to the water is a boat deck that steps down to a fixed swim platform that is integrated into the hull. This itself should be sufficient, allowing for access to the water or to tie up the boat, but Formula takes it

an Ultraleather lounge seat that converts to a dining area with a high-gloss wood table, and converts quickly back into a berth. More sleeping space is hidden aft, under the deck. It’s a crawl-in queen berth but has room for adults and kids. To port in the forward cabin is an Isotherm refrigerator with drawers next to a pullout pantry. Across is a Muave microwave, a 32-inch LED TV and a Corian recessed sink with a glide-away cover. The head includes Corian countertops, a molded sink with a Moen faucet, a Dometic Vacuflush toilet and wet-head shower wand with a spray curtain. Chock full of features, the 380 SSC also comes with dual USB charging ports seemingly everywhere, 26 cupholders, 10 JL Audio lighted speakers, precision stitching and recessed lumbar areas in all the seats, 13 separate storage compartments, a SureShade extendable shade from the aft hardtop and much more. COASTAL CRAFT 33 PROFISH

With a luxury pedigree behind it, the latest model from Coastal Craft is a lot more than just another outboard-powered fishing machine.

have excellent warranties. Also, because they are mounted on the back of the boat, they allow for more interior volume, and they weigh considerably less than inboards (about 700 pounds less in this case). Additionally, more and more of today’s consumers prefer outboards, so Coastal Craft stepped into that niche.

CONSTRUCTION

The 33 ProFish, like other Coastal Craft models, is fully welded aluminum (one-quarter inch on the bottom and three-sixteenths on the sides). It is laid up in a jig and incorporates a sturdy structural grid of ribs and stringers. The hull is then sprayed with a thick layer of two-part, fire-retardant polyurethane foam that reduces sound and condensation. To eliminate galvanic corrosion, all non-aluminum parts and fasteners are isolated using rubber, silicone or non-conducting grease. Many of the components, such as the forward and main cabin, are built externally as modules that are then dropped in and connected — a process the builder believes is more efficient than “stick” building. A 40-K NOT TOP SPEED, an open cockpit with

room to play the largest fish, a dedicated fish-cleaning station and huge storage lockers. Such features all appeal to anglers, and the Coastal Craft 33 ProFish has them all. At the same time, the new 33 ProFish comes with all the attributes that have earned the British Columbia-based aluminum boat builder a top spot in the luxury market: beautiful lines, immaculately faired and painted hulls, exceptional fit and finish, and excellent high-speed performance. In fact, it’s somewhat of a misnomer to target this yacht at the sportfishing market, because the new ProFish is equally well suited for non-anglers who want the

benefits of speed, economy and quality in a small, easy-to-handle yacht.

MOVE TO OUTBOARDS

The boat’s 39-foot overall hull length is based on the same proven design the company used in the late 1990s, during its early years, when its main builds were water taxis and commuter boats typically powered by sterndrive diesels. In a nod to the here and now, the new 33 ProFish is powered by twin 350 hp Mercury Verado gas outboards. According to Jeff Rhodes, CEO of Coastal Craft, the reason the builder went to outboards is that today’s outboards are reliable, convenient, fuel efficient and

Fishing features figure prominently in the cockpit of the 33 ProFish, along with a second helm station. A combined 700 hp give the near-40-footer (opposite) a 40-knot top speed.

CLEAR THE DECKS

The cockpit is spacious and uncluttered — nothing extraneous can get in the way of fishing — and a three-foot cabin overhang provides some shelter from the weather. All cleats, rod holders and downrigger mounts are interchangeable thanks to Burnewiin fittings. One special feature is a removable custom fish-cleaning table mounted on the top of the transom. Lockers built into the cockpit sides and transom provide storage for tackle, fenders and so on, as well as access to the fuel filters and the battery switches. One large hatch in the cockpit sole opens to reveal a generous fish locker with a diaphragm discharge pump. Another large hatch reveals a large dry storage area. A third leads down to the aft machinery spaces. Well-placed grabrails and handrails combine with 11-inch-wide sidedecks to

make it easy and safe to move fore and aft. A well-equipped starboard-side steering station is perfect for fishing and docking.

A LOOK INSIDE

A heavy watertight door opens to reveal the salon and an interior tastefully fitted out with rich, horizontal-grain walnut doors, cabinets and trim, and beige Ultraleather upholstery. Passengers on the Coastal Craft 33 ProFish enjoy 6 feet, 6 inches of headroom, and soft upholstered ceiling panels

add a warm ambiance. Four forward-sloping, aluminum-framed windows that open and a three-panel windshield provide good visibility, light and ventilation. Immediately to port and down a few steps is an 80-inch-long, 40-inch-wide quarter berth. As with the rest of the interior, it is finely finished and fitted with a small hanging locker. Otherwise, the layout is somewhat traditional. A raised dinette is to port and its table lowers to create a third berth. The linear galley is to starboard

and includes a Corian countertop, a deep stainless sink, a Wallas two-burner diesel cooktop, a microwave, a 4.2-cubic-foot Nova Kool refrigerator/freezer and a clever pullout pantry. Ample storage in drawers and lockers will make it easy to cruise for a weekend or a week. In addition, a huge flex area under the cabin sole has room for about six large plastic storage totes. The raised helm has the equipment one would expect, including hydraulic power steering, electronic engine controls, SEAMAGAZINE.COM  OCTOBER 2019  27

8/27/19 2:19 PM

Coastal Craft made sure the main cabin of the 33 ProFish has excellent visibility and cross ventilation through opening side windows. The dinette table lowers to create a third berth, and the compact helm has room for two 12-inch MFDs. A couple can easily hunker down in the V-berth.

The boat reached a top speed of 40 knots, though the ride was so smooth and gentle I felt we were moving at half that speed. Optimus 360 joystick docking and virtual anchoring. A full Garmin navigation package includes two 12-inch touchscreens, a VHF radio with AIS, radar, a sounder and autopilot. Digital outboard engine readouts and a bank of rocker switches tie it all together. The sliding window to starboard provides extra visibility when coming alongside the dock, though visibility from the helm, all around, is very good. Across from the helm is a double companion seat, and the handy fold-down wooden table that fronts it is a smart and useful feature. The test boat was also fitted with a 10-inch touchscreen for the copilot.

BELOW

The V-berth on the 33 ProFish is a full 6 feet, 6 inches long, and a privacy door separates it from the rest of the vessel. The nicely upholstered walls give off a warm and cozy feel. To port is the head, which includes a small sink and a vanity (the owner did not opt for a shower), while across the companionway is a large hanging locker. With two Group 31 house batteries, two 27-series engine start batteries and minimal power demand from the boat’s systems, a generator should not be necessary. The exception is for owners who spend extended days at anchor or who add equipment that draws heavily on power. Some owners opt for a small portable gas generator, which can be connected to the vessel’s safe SmartPlug shore power. Two 135-gallon fuel tanks are aluminum and built by Florida Marine Tanks. A 30-gallon plastic diesel tank provides fuel for the stove, the Espar D4 forced-air furnace — Rhodes says it is more efficient than hydronic heating and draws less power — and the optional Hurricane hydronic on-demand hot-water system. A 66-gallon plastic water tank is standard. Extra water or fuel can be accommodated by an optional 100-gallon stainless tank. Coastal cruisers will likely opt for the extra water capacity, while sport anglers who cover long distances will prefer the extra fuel. Instead of traditional bronze through-hull fittings, the 33 ProFish is equipped with Marelon (by Forespar)

through-hulls. Marelon is a proven injection-molded polymer composite that is impervious to corrosion and electrolysis, which is especially useful for aluminum vessels.

SPEED AND POWER

Even though the boat was fully loaded with fuel during the sea trial, its acceleration was impressive, and I felt no prop slip or cavitation when we jammed the throttles forward. Bowrise was minimal, and the 33 ProFish was quick to settle on plane at 13 knots in about four seconds. At wide-open throttle, the boat reached a top speed of 40 knots, though the ride was so smooth and gentle I felt we were moving at half that speed. At a fast cruise between 27 to 30 knots, we were traveling about one mile for every gallon of gas burned. The response to sudden turns was impressive — almost like a sports car. The 33 shouldered into such turns with no slipping and tracked dead straight when

Modern outboards deliver 40 knots of getthere power and open up the boat to more storage and interior space.

the outboards were centred. Interior noise levels — 76 dB at 30 knots — allowed us to converse easily. Conditions were relatively calm, but we managed to find some large ferry wakes to attack, and the motion was smooth and dry, without any slamming. For fishing activities, running a single outboard will push the 33 ProFish to ideal 1.5- to 3-knot trolling speeds. Trim is controlled by both the trim function on the outboards and the Zipwake dynamic trim control system. However, we used only minimal engine trim during our sea trial, and the trim tabs should only prove necessary to trim for heel. The 33 ProFish is an extremely capable, easy-to-handle and well-performing yacht. No doubt it will make an adept fishing platform, but it also has all the luxurious attributes that have made Coastal Craft such a respected aluminum boat builder. It’s interesting to note that only half the orders to date are from dedicated anglers, while the balance are cruisers.

very year, the NW Explorations crew organizes a Mother Goose Flotilla to Alaska that allows couples or families to charter a boat and follow a lead boat — run by a U.S. Coast Guard–licensed captain — along a designated path through the Inside Passage and up to the 49th state. With a mechanic, a naturalist and other experts in tow, the flotilla offers experience, knowledge, camaraderie and, perhaps best of all, a chance for people to get a taste of cruising to Alaska before trying it on their own. This year, legs five and six of the flotilla went from Juneau to Skagway and back. We present a partial log (kept by Tracy ArmChelsea Thaw) of those two legs, in large part naturalist because with Glacier Bay in this area, the channels and Fords Terror inlets and towns outside the park and between Juneau and Skagway are often the road less traveled.

Leg 5 JUNEAU TO EXCURSION INLET

The Mother Goose Flotilla exits Elfin Cove after a day of Fourth of July festivities. In the calm waters of William Henry Bay, (below l. to r.) Discovery, Deception and Bonum Vitae raft-up; they later hosted a social hour and potluck.

 A red sun rose in a smoky sky over the ghostly Juneau harbor Monday morning. The raucous fishing fleet, having provisioned, prepared and partied all weekend, emptied out of the harbor early in the morning, leaving it unusually still. Mother Goose followed suit and got underway, leaving the Alaska capital behind for Excursion Inlet. Less than an hour underway and the fleet came upon a number of humpbacks off Point Retreat. The fleet slowed to idle to watch as the humpbacks repeatedly dove, feeding on thousands of small herring under the water, before reemerging again. Farther along in Saginaw Strait, the fleet came across a playful group of Dall’s porpoises. The rotund black and white porpoises glided and zipped, rolling over one another in effortless grace. Curious as they are quick, the porpoises took a liking to Bonum Vitae and Arctic Star, riding their bow wake as we traveled along. The fleet arrived to Excursion Inlet just as the afternoon light turned to wash the mountainous island hemlocks in a deep golden hue. Lily scrambled ashore and expertly set Deception’s stern line to hold our six-boat raft. Jordan called the boats in one by one, and soon Mother Goose had its very own boat neighborhood settled into the serene waters of Excursion Inlet. Deception hosted a lively social hour, featuring an expertly plated baked brie from Thea and a scrumptious cheese plate from Arctic Star’s crew. A little while after our social hour, Al spotted a lone black bear wandering along the beach across the inlet. Eric and July from Discovery, “Big Camera” Bill from Arctic Star, and Ann, Annie and Vickie all piled into dinghies to get a closer look. Meanwhile, 7-year-old Walker off Bonum Vitae caught a yellow sol, his third fish of the trip! Shortly thereafter Morrey, of Thea, also hooked a fish, which prompted Walker to declare a fishing challenge: who could catch the most and the biggest fish. Not to be outdone by our fleet’s fishermen, Discovery, Thea, and Bonum Vitae’s crews all managed to get a good haul of crab before turning in for the night. And just as the sky finally started to darken, Mother Goose was graced by a black bear and a brown bear walking slowly along opposite sides of the shore. Quietly, with reverence, we watched as the bears padded along the beach and finally slipped back into the brush, disappearing into the peaceful night.

Leg 5 EXCURSION INLET TO ELFIN COVE It’s another beautiful day in the neighborhood for Mother Goose. The fleet awoke to the calm waters of Excursion Inlet. Before getting underway for Elfin Cove, Bonum Vitae pulled up a few more crabs. Underway the fleet saw humpbacks fluking and sea lions swimming in the tidelines. At one point the fleet passed more than 100 sea otters rafted up, floating side by side amid the wide channel. Around this time of year, female sea otters will group together

Elfin Cove certainly cast a spell over all of us. and form large rafts, called nurseries, for the protection of their newborn babies. What a fantastic sight to see so many sea otters thriving after near extinction. As the fleet neared Elfin Cove, a fog bank appeared, shrouding our destination in mystery.

Carefully we pressed on until the misty tree line of Elfin Cove appeared, almost magically, out of the fog. It is easy to see why Ruth Swanson, founder of the post office in 1935, picked elves

as the town’s namesake. Hidden in the misty fjords, the town’s brightly colored houses and boats peek out from overgrown bushes and moss-laden trees all tied together by a creaking

boardwalk and the sheer determination of Elfin Cove’s residents. We had to see for ourselves if the rumors of elves were true, so on arrival we went for a walk through the town and into the forest. We were richly rewarded with copious garden gnomes and an enchanting waterfall surrounded by a lush forest loaded with salmonberry plants. The bright yellow and red salmonberries provided a tantalizing trailside treat that everyone enjoyed. Most of all by Walker, who went after salmonberries with bear-like enthusiasm and dexterity. While we might not have seen any elves in the woods, Elfin Cove certainly cast a spell over all of us.

Leg 5 ELFIN COVE TO DUNDAS BAY  Fourth of July celebrations were in full swing in Elfin Cove today, and it wouldn’t be an Alaskan Fourth without fish. Kicking off the party in the early morn were Ann, Annie, David, Ted and Morrey of Thea, all of whom went out on a fishing charter. The rest of the fleet that didn’t go fishing went into town to enjoy the annual Fourth of July Pancake Feed at the lodge. Elfin Cove’s winding boardwalk and historic houses were decked out in their finest buntings and flags, so Jordan and Al decided to dress Deception in its code flag finery to match. The fish festivities continued with the return of Thea’s fishermen, victorious with 12 fish caught. To top it all off, Elfin Cove residents held a raucous and competitive fish toss, which required participants to toss and catch humpies at ever-increasing distances. At high tide, Mother Goose

bid Elfin Cove a fond farewell and, destined for Dundas Bay, headed back into the fog. The fleet traveled through mist and sunshine and spotted humpback whales, sea otters, sea lions and a whole host of pelagic birds. Eventually the fleet broke through the fog and cruised into sunny Dundas Bay. With the sun pouring over the hemlock hillside, the fleet anchored for the night. After a fun and eventful day, Deception’s bakery brought hot apple pie around to each boat by dinghy to top off a July 4 that couldn’t be beat.

Leg 5 DUNDAS BAY TO SWANSON HARBOR  When Mother Goose awoke, Dundas Bay’s evening residents, the fishing trawlers, had left, leaving the bay still and sleepy. Taking their lead, we fired up the coffeepots and weighed anchor. Ted, an artisan potter from Pennsylvania, got quite the surprise when up came Thea’s anchor covered in

beautiful green clay. Most people don’t consider cleaning the anchor a trip highlight, but for Ted, Dundas Bay held something extra special. Cruising through Icy Straits, the fleet spotted porpoises and humpbacks on the horizon. As we came to the opening to Swanson Harbor, we got a very close look at a humpback sleeping near the shore. Humpbacks, like all mammals, don’t have gills and must come to the water’s surface to get oxygen. Unlike most other mammals, which live on land, cetaceans — whales, porpoises and dolphins — evolved to breathe voluntarily instead of involuntarily, to avoid accidentally breathing under water. This means whales only breathe when they consciously think, “OK, time to breathe.” When asleep, they must remain partially conscious, meaning one half of their brain is resting while the other half is regulating their breathing. This might sound like a lot of logistics for a nap, but our sleeping humpback looked very peaceful bobbing at the surface, slowly breathing huge whale breaths. The fleet pulled in to the floating docks in Swanson Harbor, the midafternoon sun heating the wooden boards under our feet. Once everyone was tied up, we were ready to go explore. Ann and Annie from Thea immediately hopped in their kayaks to go for a paddle along the shore. Walker and Grandpa Bob, our resident fishermen, got their tackle out and headed off in their dinghy with hopes of catching the big one. Meanwhile, Chris and Ashley took Deception’s kayaks out for a spin, basking in the sunshine. David, from Thea, and Ann, from Bonum Vitae, opted for a more terrestrial activity and went for a walk along the beach. Walking along a path of scraggly pickleweed and discarded mussel shells, we came upon a group of nesting black oyster catchers, all chittering loudly. That evening the Thea and Bonum Vitae crews hauled in a bunch of crab, a number of which were keepers. Time for crab dinner! The fleet went to sleep, just like our humpback, bobbing gently in the water, full and happy.

Elfin Cove’s resident lab, Lance, awaits the flotilla (top). Part of Elfin Cove’s Fourth of July celebration was a fish-tossing contest where the distance increased every round. In Haines, buildings left from the set of “White Fang” make a nice photo backdrop (top right); meanwhile, folks from Bonum Vitae and Thea stretch their legs on a walk through the forest (right).

Leg 6 HAINES TO WILLIAM HENRY BAY  Saturday morning started out slow and easy for Mother Goose. Crews went up to the Haines farmers market to check out the local produce and arts scene. The Saturday market is held at the Haines fairgrounds, which is composed of a stage, a Ferris wheel and several old-timey buildings connected by a boardwalk built as a set for the movie “White Fang.” After production wrapped, Disney left the set intact and the city of Haines has used it as a charming venue for concerts, markets and the Southeast Alaska state fair ever since. the wares of local vendors selling vegetables, honey and knit hats. The smell of decadent, freshbaked goods mingled with the sound of neighbors greeting each other over the local bluegrass band playing in the background. After a while, we walked back into town and left the scent of fresh blueberry scones and the twang of the fiddle on the breeze behind us. By midafternoon the fleet was waving goodbye to the charming borough of Haines and headed south down Chilkoot Inlet, making way for William Henry Bay. As we were pulling out of the harbor, the Thea crew called out two brown bears along the shore. Shortly after, the fleet saw the first humpback of [Leg 6]. By late afternoon we had transited halfway down Lynn Canal and were settled in the serene waters of William Henry Bay.

Leg 6 WILLIAM HENRY BAY TO SWANSON HARBOR  All days on the water are wonderful but some days are just “marvy.” Humpbacks, orcas and bears — oh my! A day out in Southeast Alaska doesn’t get any more marvelous than this; the day was, in the words of Discovery crewmember Melinda, “Just marvy!” The trip from William Henry Bay to Swanson Harbor is typically pretty quick, but on today’s journey Mother Goose couldn’t turn around without spotting some truly fantastic Alaskan wildlife. Right away Discovery’s crew spotted a black bear meandering along the beach, turning over rocks looking for a midmorning snack. A short time after, the fleet spotted blows on the horizon and slowed to watch a lone humpback feed. Humpbacks are lunge feeders and migrate in the summer to fishing grounds where they hunt for herring in the nutrient-dense cold waters of Alaska. Again and again she came up to the surface to breathe and then dove down, fluking her massive tail, lunge feeding on baitfish. We watched

Leg 6 HOONAH TO BARANOF WARM SPRINGS With the promise of a decadent hot-springs bath at the end of the day, Mother Goose left behind the lovely town of Hoonah and began the trek down Chatham Strait for Warm Springs Bay. Partway down Chatham we spotted a few sailing vessels surrounded by blows. As we slowed, we realized those blows belonged to a group of humpbacks who were bubble-net feeding. Bubble. Net. Feeding! Had I known our fleet was going to be in

the graceful humpback complete several cycles before we moved on. A bit later Discovery called out Dall’s porpoises riding on their bow. And then to everyone’s surprise two families of orcas appeared next to the boats. One family included a baby orca, who moved with playful energy among its mom and aunties. The Dall’s porpoises became bored by our lack of wake and meandered away, milling nearby. While the two ecotypes of orca — resident and transient — might look strikingly similar to us, the clever porpoises knew these particular orcas were the fish-eating residents, not their mammal-eating counterparts, and thus they, as a marine mammal, could safely be nearby. After all that excellent wildlife viewing, one would think the fleet would be tired. Not so with this group. As soon as we pulled into Swanson Harbor,

the Patos crew hopped in the dinghy and were off to drop a crab trap. Melinda and Doug from Discovery decided to go for a leisurely kayak trip around the shoreline. The Walkers on Thea, truly living their best life, got a surprise visit from their pilot nephew, who delivered them pizza by floatplane.

Bubble-net feeding (above) is a rare sight for boaters to catch, so the entire flotilla, including the crew of Patos (top), stopped to document the humpback whale action between Hoonah and Warm Springs Bay.

an episode of “Blue Planet,” I would have started the day with a British accent, à la David Attenborough. (For the full experience, read this next bit as an Attenborough voiceover.) Of the thousands of humpbacks who come to Alaska to feed every year, only a handful have the cultural adaptation for collective lunge feeding. Aptly named, bubblenet feeding requires several humpbacks in specialized roles working together to corral and catch schools of baitfish. First, some of the humpbacks blow a ring of bubbles around the fish, trapping them in one place. Next, another humpback, typically a male, emits a loud scream that frightens the fish into a tight bunch. The group of humpbacks then lunge feeds, mouths open and throat walls

red and distended, up toward the surface in a carefully choreographed fish buffet. Witnessing this extraordinary behavior up close is truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience. With our collective jaw still on the deck, the fleet turned away from the group of humpbacks and continued on to Warm Springs Bay. Our jaws were really getting a workout today, because as we turned the corner into Warm Springs Bay, we were met with a stunning view of a beautiful waterfall not yards from the dock. Crews trickled in and rafted up. Many crews took a hike to a freshwater lake and then doubled back to visit the thermal pools. Nothing like relaxing in a natural hot spring, the sounds of a rushing waterfall nearby, to wrap up a perfect Alaskan day.

Aluminum is also more malleable and elastic than steel, At the Lifeproof Boats facility, a 31 GT Coupe shows signs of welding work. At this stage, we can see that aluminum allows metal-boat builders to create complex shapes and curves.

B

oatbuilding materials and construction continue to evolve with modern materials and processes, providing many good options, including metal boats. The origins of metal boat building date back to the 1800s, when wood boats were first dressed in iron cladding, after which builders used iron for the entire hull. While iron, an element mined from the Earth, worked to build boats, mixing it with other metals produces the alloy steel, which is lighter, stronger and better suited to boat building. Burger Sea Owl

Benefits of Steel

Steel is the primary building material used in large ships and commercial vessels. In the recreational arena, it is used primarily for yachts larger than 100 feet. Attributes of steel are its strength, rigidity and puncture resistance; in addition, it is inexpensive and found worldwide. Steel and iron ships were once fastened with rivets, but modern steel vessels are welded. Steel plate’s near universal availability and the widespread use of welding equipment mean steel boats can be built and repaired almost anywhere — another notch in the Pro column — and steel is very forgiving in a collision or grounding, because it bends before it breaks, providing added safety.

Disadvantages of Steel Steel (carbon steel, not stainless) does have drawbacks. Number one is rust. The marine environment and salt water are very corrosive and can eat away steel hulls over time. Modern paints, coatings, and foams applied both inside 40

,

so builders can more easily form complex shapes and curves with it. and outside of steel hulls can slow this process, but rust prevention requires special preparation, maintenance and care. Owing to its weight, steel works best in displacement hulls that can handle a heavier load, and it is extremely rigid, so it is a tedious process to bend it into curves, which is why many steel boats have hard chines and boxy superstructures. Knowledgeable builders such as Delta Marine in Seattle can create steel hulls that, once painted, are nearly indistinguishable from other hull types, but it is a time-consuming process with limitations. Because steel is a ferrous metal and highly magnetic, it creates issues for compasses. On steel vessels, compasses must be carefully calibrated, and “correcting spheres” on the binnacle compensate for magnetic influences.

Stainless Steel Why not build a boat out of stainless steel? Couple of reasons. Stainless steel is an alloy composed primarily of steel and chromium, which gives stainless steel its shiny appearance. Its corrosion resistance comes from a reaction with air that forms a protective chromium oxide layer on its surface that inhibits rust. When stainless steel is submerged, this protection is removed and stainless can corrode underwater. That and the high cost of stainless steel make it unsuitable as a primary boatbuilding material.

Aluminum The most common metal boatbuilding material in use today, especially on the West Coast, is aluminum. Like iron, aluminum is an element, the most abundant metal in the Earth’s crust, but it is not found in a complete state in nature. In the 1880s scientists developed processes to extract aluminum from alum and bauxite ores, and industries began using this strong, lightweight metal. Extremely versatile, aluminum has widespread uses, including foil, cans, furniture, airplanes and pickup trucks. Aluminum makes a good boatbuilding material for many reasons. It has a very high strength-to-weight ratio, and while it is weaker than steel, it weighs two and a half times less. Aluminum is also more malleable and elastic than steel, so builders can more easily form complex shapes and curves with it. One of aluminum’s greatest attributes is corrosion resistance. It includes no iron, so it does not rust;

Boasting a cabin and other yachtlike features, the Tactical T-40 (bottom) and Lifeproof Cabin 33 Limited (top) both employ buoyancy collars and the latest outboard power. Their aluminum hulls resist corrosion and are easy to repair.

thus, aluminum hulls and decks don’t require paint, although some builders and owners prefer paint. Aluminum alloys have been developed specifically for marine construction. Those alloys include 5083 and 5086, which top recreational boat builders use in their hulls because of its increased strength, formability and corrosion resistance. U.S. Navy and Coast Guard contracts typically require 5086, because of its weld strength and tensile strength. Another benefit of aluminum is that a worn or broken section can be repaired or replaced by welding in a new piece, which remains as strong as the original. Aluminum boats don’t fade or crack in sunlight, which helps them retain value. Because aluminum boats are not built in molds, they can be more easily customized than boats built with other building materials.

Concerns about Aluminum CORROSION

Common concerns about metal boats are that the boats will be noisy and have issues related to corrosion. Aluminum, like all metal, can be degraded by electrolysis and galvanic corrosion, which occurs where dissimilar metals are placed in contact with each other in the presence of an electrolyte, such as sea water. The weaker metal degrades as it yields molecules to the stronger metal. No owner wants his boat to slowly dissolve, but the corrosion issue is easily rectified with sacrificial anodes. All boats with metal components in the water should be protected by zincs that act as sacrificial anodes. Attaching sacrificial anodes, usually made of zinc, directly to the hull of aluminum boats protects them from corrosion. On all boats it is important to monitor and maintain zincs to prevent this type of corrosion, but proper care eliminates this problem. SEAMAGAZINE.COM OCTOBER 2019

+Feature Metal 3.indd 41

Rozema

Electrolysis occurs when stray electrical currents enter the water and speed up the galvanic process. Proper wiring and grounding of both the vessel and dockside power typically prevent this. In certain “hot” marinas or slips, isolators can be used to counteract this issue. Paint can help protect aluminum from corrosion by insulating the metal from electrolytes — and it creates a more finished look. Raw aluminum, like stainless, protects itself with natural oxides that form on its surface when exposed to the air. Aluminum boats, especially after a trip on a trailer or after being winterized, should be cleaned thoroughly with fresh water to help prevent surface corrosion. They can last for many years both in and out of the water. NOISE

Some people think aluminum boats are noisy, but the noise level varies widely depending on design and insulation. Many people have experience with popular Jon boats and other aluminum utility and fishing boats, and these small, lightweight boats with large flat-surface hulls can be noisy, but quality aluminum boats designed with thicker welded plates, stringer systems and insulation are much quieter. 42

Metal boats don’t come out of a mold, so boats such as the Rozema 37-LC Sport, shown here in build and on the water, can be somewhat customized.

T

West Coast Aluminum Builders he Pacific Northwest is home to many quality boat builders that specialize in metal boats. Many commercial operators prefer metal boats, so commercial, police and military vessels are often built of aluminum, as are many pleasure craft. But the notion that metal is a commercial building material causes many people to think metal boats lack the fit and finish of other types of boats, but the reality is that metal boats can be finished to the highest standards attainable. Most of the world’s largest megayachts are made of metal. The level of finish depends on the capabilities of the yard building the boat and the purpose of the vessel, not the hull and deck materials.

Coastal Craft

Lifeproof Boats

Coastal Craft started building aluminum commercial fishing boats more than 23 years ago but now specializes in recreational boats: inboard-powered cruisers up to 65 feet and three new models in the popular outboard market, including the 30 ProFish, 33 ProFish and 33 Express.

Lifeproof Boats makes boats from 15 to 55 feet out of commercialgrade 5086 aluminum. Its boats have patented hybrid air/foam buoyancy collars that increase stability, provide additional flotation and aid in docking. Lifeproof builds commercial, law-enforcement, and search-and-rescue boats, but its recreational boats have high-end finishes and interior accommodations. The builder just completed its first twin diesel outboard boat, which came complete with a built-in hot tub.

Page’s Resort & Marina is a three-peat boaters should not miss. STORY AND PHOTOS BY DEANE HISLOP

PAGE’S RESORT & MARINA HAS been welcoming seagoing visitors since its beginning as a fish camp and store in the early 1940s. It has since evolved into a full-service resort that offers visitors a marina, five rental cottages, tent sites, washrooms, and coin-operated showers and laundry. The grounds are well maintained and decorated with relics from the area. The resort has been family owned and operated by the Koyamas, the Pages, the Reeves and the Hatfields, the latter of which took over the marina more than 30 years ago. For the past 10 years, Gloria, her husband, Ken, and their three children, Stephanie, Michelle and Nicolas, have been welcoming guests and caring for the facilities. (Morgan the golden retriever helps too.) Gloria’s parents operated the marina for the first 20 years of Hatfield

Page’s Resort and Marina offers moorage for vessels up to 65 feet, and the resort office’s porch offers a relaxation spot with a view.

eons ago. A maze of low-lying islands and menacing reefs conceal the bay’s entrance. Silva Bay is reputed for its “tricky entrance,” because of legendary Shipyard Rock 1 , but don’t let this deter you. The safe channel between Tugboat and Vance islands is narrow; below the surface, rocky ledges restrict the channel width, with those that project from the north and northwest side of Tugboat Island being particularly extensive. Many vessels have grounded here. Upon entering, boaters need to be sure they’ve cleared the shoals that extend west from Shipyard Rock and then maintain a westerly heading until about halfway to Law Point before they turn toward the facilities on the southwest shoreline. MOOR YOUR VESSEL The bay has no room for anchoring; the basin is filled with permanently moored boats and private mooring buoys, leaving little swing room for additional vessels. Stern-tying is not possible. The open lanes in front of the marina docks and on the north side of the bay are for floatplane access and egress. The full-service Page’s Resort & Marina 2 provides a welcoming, quiet refuge to the boaters. Entering the bay, we contacted Page’s on VHF Channel 66A for our slip assignment. We had reservations, which are recommended for the summer months. Meeting us at our assigned slip was one of the resort staff to assist with Easy Goin’s lines. In recent years, a renovation of the marina docks expanded the quest moorage and rebuilt the fuel dock, so the marina can now offer moorage for vessels up to 65 feet. Also available are gas and diesel (year round), 15- and 30-amp power, garbage and recycling service, and Wi-Fi. When I went to the office to pay our moorage, I discovered it also serves as a bookstore filled with the usual selection of cruising guides, charts, tide tables and an extensive variety of books by island residents. Also, a small convenience store sells a selection of food items, drinks, frozen food, ice, fresh veggies and refrigerated items.

GET OUT AND EXPLORE Gabriola Island is a great spot for walking and bicycling. Bikes are available to rent at Dock ‘N’ Rock Rentals in the building across the drive from the office. Visitors who would rather conserve their energy can rent a scooter instead. Venturing onto the island roads via scooter opens a whole world of island galleries, restaurants and shops. The afternoon of our visit we walked the mile and a half to Drumberg Provincial Park on the north side of Gabriola Pass, east of Josef Point. The park is known for its sandstone outcroppings, ancient petrographs, many tidal pools and small but pleasant white-sand beach. C A S T A N D C LU B The area outside the Flat Top Islands can be excellent for salmon and bottomfish. During our stay we witnessed anglers return to the dock with catches of both salmon and lingcod. Golfers can take a taxi to the Gabriola Golf and Country Club, a pastoral nine-hole course laid out on rolling hillsides that overlook Hoggan Lake. The course offers some challenging and lovely holes, and club and cart rentals are available. G R OW I N G FA M I LY B U S I N E S S In 2017 the Hatfields purchased the Silva Bay Inn, formally the Boatel, on the northwest shoreline of the bay, expanding the family enterprise. It is now known as Page’s Inn on Silva Bay 3 . The inn has a history of family ownership since its beginning. The Silva family started it, followed by the Crockers, Burts, Stewarts, Heddies and Leloups. Recently, Marlana Smith and Bob Rooks developed Golf.Gabriola.org the inn by completely rebuilding PagesResortGroup.com the marina, renovating the suites and attending to the grounds.

MEET STEVEN ROEMEN President and Executive Director of the Cape Blanco Heritage Society

AFTER WORKING AS A MECHANICAL engineer at the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard in Bremerton, Wash., for 32 years, Steven Roemen retired in 2002. He relocated to the small fishing town of Port Orford on the southern Oregon coast, about 100 yards away from the Port Orford Heads State Park and Lifeboat Station. Roemen started at the Port Orford Lifeboat Station as a volunteer buyer for the museum gift shop, and he, along with several other volunteers, worked to restore one of the 36-foot motor lifeboats that served the area. Now the president and executive director of the Cape Blanco Heritage Society, which encompasses the Cape Blanco Light Station, Hughes House and Port Orford Lifeboat Station, Roemen offers educational and interpretive services at the Lifeboat Station Museum. He shared his experience with Sea during an email interview. Sea: What was the function of a lifeboat station? Roemen: Lifeboat Stations in the U.S. were patterned after the stations in the United Kingdom. They provided search and rescue for vessels in distress, such as stranded, sinking or beached ships. In the United States, the initial efforts took place in Boston in 1785, with the founding of the Humane Society of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts the next year. The Society offered rewards for the development of resuscitation techniques and in 1789 began construction of a series of “Huts of Refuge” on the Massachusetts coast to provide shelter to victims of shipwrecks. By 1807, the Massachusetts Humane Society had built the first surfboat, a 30-foot-long whaleboat with a 10-man crew. The

Society erected the first lifeboat station later that same year in Cohasset. The increase in shipping traffic up and down the Pacific Coast and the attempts to establish major shipping ports along the Oregon coast in the late 19th century resulted in an increasing number of shipwrecks. At least 30 shipwrecks are known to have occurred in the area around Port Orford, from various causes, between 1851 and 1934. Four of those wrecks resulted in great loss of life. On March 3, 1891, an act of Congress authorized the establishment of a lifesaving station at or near Port Orford. After many setbacks, finally in 1932 an $83,000 appropriation was made for the establishment of the station. Forty-three years after

initiation of the project, Port Orford Station was completed in June of 1934. How long was the lifeboat station in service? The Port Orford Lifeboat Station was officially in service from 1934 to 1970. With the addition of faster motor lifeboats and helicopters, the need for station rescues diminished. The Coast Guard decommissioned the station in 1970 and from 1970 to 1976, the facility was used by Oregon State University scientists for marine research. In 1976, the surplus federal property of the beautiful headlands became part of the Oregon State Parks System. Tell us more about the surfmen who lived on the station.

A restored 36-foot motor lifeboat that served at the station is on display outside the Lifeboat Station Museum at Port Orford Heads State Park.

Thirteen surfmen and an officer-in-charge manned the station. They were charged with being properly trained and prepared to save lives. They were a hardy group, as expressed by their motto: You have to go out; you don’t have to come back. The boathouse was located in a cove 532 steps down the side of the headland, 280 feet below the barracks building. The location created a unique situation for the surfmen, as they traveled down the wood and concrete steps with a pair of five-gallon Jerry cans filled with fuel for the boats. Each Jerry can weighed about 45 pounds and it took 39 cans (or 20 trips down the steps) to fuel each 36-foot motor lifeboat. Daily life for the surfmen included training drills. High on the list was the ability to handle the lifeboat, use a compass to stay on course, dock and undock, and train to save lives while dealing with the ever-changing winds and currents. They also took four-hour shifts manning the watchtower 24 hours a day looking for ships in distress,

and for Japanese submarines during World War II. They became experts at firing a Lyle gun, rescues by breeches buoy and many maneuvers used in rescues. They also drilled for events such as changing of the guard, as there were several commanders who served at the Port Orford Station. What type of lifeboats served the station and what were their significant features? Two 26-foot surfboats and two 36-foot motor lifeboats served at this station. Eightman oar-powered surfboats were used for drills and short rescue trips. The 36-foot motor lifeboats were the main rescue boats. The Type TRS motor lifeboat Number 36498 that served at the Port Orford Lifeboat Station for many years was built by the Coast Guard in 1946 at Curtis Bay, Md., at a cost of $23,133. This type of lifeboat was specifically designed to remain operational under extremely difficult conditions. It has a heavy 2,000pound bronze keel and skeg,

watertight compartments, and self-bailing features. Most of its wooden elements are white oak frames with cypress planking, and it has a total weight of nearly 20,000 pounds. It is sheathed with monel plating, which allows for wintertime ice breaking. The one here was 36 feet, 8 inches long and had a beam of 10 feet, 9 inches and a draft of 3 feet, 5 inches. Generally, they were powered by mid-engine 120 hp four-cylinder diesel engines. The earlier 36-footers were powered by gasoline engines. They had a speed of 8 to 9 knots and range of 260 miles. The crew consisted of three to eight surfmen and the boats had a rescue capacity of 20 survivors. In the movie “The Finest Hours,” a true story about the rescue of personnel from a tanker on the East Coast, 32 survivors were rescued at one time, by the 36500, the sister ship of the 36498 in Port Orford. What types of rescues were common for the station in its heyday? The Port Orford Coast Guardsmen conducted dramatic, daring rescues at sea and patrolled the beaches during World War II in the most challenging sea conditions in the world. During the first three years of the station’s existence, the lifesaving crew responded to two wrecks, both close to Port Orford, and both with 100 percent of the personnel rescued. When the United States was brought into WWII, the Port Orford Coast Guard Station went into military mode. The number of men increased greatly, from the usual

Mention this ad for 1 0 % O CRUISAIR F F

officer-in-charge and 13 men to more than 100. Training intensified, guard dogs were obtained and beach patrols conducted regularly. Security at the station was increased with sentries and barbed wire. Machine gun pits and foxholes were dug and 20 millimeter cannons installed. In October 1942 the tanker Larry Doheny was torpedoed by a Japanese submarine about 40 miles south of Port Orford. The crippled ship drifted to the Port Orford area and survivors were brought ashore where they rested until transported elsewhere by military authorities. In 1945 the war ended and the men at the station resumed a quieter life. What kind of artifacts can visitors find at the museum? Outside of the museum, under cover year-round, is a cosmetically restored 36-foot motor lifeboat that served at the station, the No. 36498. The Lifeboat Station Museum (capeblancoheritagesociety. com) is located in the former crew barracks building. Inside you can see several Coast Guard ship/boat models and shipwreck artifacts, including ships’ wheels. You can also see the Lyle gun that was used to shoot rescue lines to ships in distress, have an authentic GI “dog tag” made on a vintage machine and read the story of the Japanese submarine attacks in 1942 on the southern Oregon coast. You can also see a scale model of the Lifeboat Station as it was in 1934 with the surrounding headlands and ocean. The museum is open April through October from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., every day except Tuesday.

completion of more than $1.5 million of facilities improvements at its seven-acre waterfront campus in Port Hadlock. In addition, it announced another $1 million in hand for upcoming projects. The Boat School stabilized weather pilings, repaired the failing seawall, built new classroom space and refurbished existing space. It also acquired almost an acre of land to create a contiguous campus, signed a longterm lease for the Ajax Café and expanded its septic system while meeting rigorous environmental standards. The work has resulted in increased space for the Boat School’s Traditional and Contemporary Boatbuilding and Marine Systems programs, and also preserves an authentic slice of working waterfront in Lowest Hadlock.

AT AGE 11, PHIL DELANO and his sister, Kathy, spent two years sailing the Sea of Cortez and mainland Mexico’s west coast with their parents, David and Sandy Delano. The family sailing trip, aboard a CT 41-foot Taiwanese ketch rig, helped set a life course for Delano (pronounced Del-lah-no), now a captain and part owner/operator, with his parents, of TowBoatUS San Francisco Bay and Delta. “It made me a lifelong boater,” Delano said, glancing out the window of his San Francisco office. “The experience was

unique, and if I’m lucky, I may do it again as an adult.” For now, there’s plenty to keep the three-generation business-owning family away from two-year cruising trips. And there’s many a nautical mile to traverse as their company, TowBoatUS San Francisco Bay and Delta, now encompasses the entirety of San Francisco Bay, San Pablo Bay, Suisan Bay and the San Joaquin/ Sacramento River Delta from Sacramento to Stockton. Delano said when need arises and weather cooperates, their reach expands west to the SEAMAGAZINE.COM  OCTOBER 2019  CA-1

Farallon Islands, north to Point Reyes and south to Pillar Point Harbor in Half Moon Bay.

GROWTH Their recent acquisition of two fully customized tow boats, TowBoatUS Alameda and TowBoatUS Bethel Island — both were built by North River Boats of Roseburg, Ore., which supplies boats to the U.S. Navy and Coast Guard — brings to eight the number of vessels in the company’s arsenal of rescue boats. The fleet is evenly split, with four at the Bethel Island port and four in San Francisco Bay. Four full-time and three part-time licensed captains are always tuned to VHF Channel 16 or their BoatUS smartphone app. The electronics on the new 28-foot rigid aluminum acquisitions are the latest and the best, as are the Dynema tow lines, one 600 feet and the second 300 feet. Dynema weighs 15 percent as much as steel cable, has the same strength and floats. Both new boats boast twin 225 hp Honda outboards and 240 gallons of fuel, providing all-day, long-range fuel capacity.

LOOKING BACK The Delanos have been a water-oriented family for generations. Before the two-year family cruise, racing was big. CA-2

“My dad and mom owned a small sailboat shop in Friant, Calif., and they sold and raced a variety of small, trailerable sailboats. Their first boat was a Santana 22-footer and they went up from there,” Delano said. “I raced a Flipper as a kid; that’s a boat similar to a Sabot, a cat-rig centerboard boat. I was Fresno Yacht Club junior fleet champion one year, and my sister had also held the title.” Delano also raced on keelboats as a foredeck hand. “This was mostly on Chrysler

“We’re in the top 10 nationwide in cases for TowBoatUS.” — Capt. Phil Delano 22s. My parents managed to sell enough of them that they had enough for one-design races on Millerton and Huntington lakes outside of Fresno.” The Delano family’s entry into the marine towing world began serendipitously in the late 1980s. “As a young adult, I’d seen the Ventura Harbor Vessel Assist boat when we were living aboard our sailboat. I remember liking that work, and wanting to do it,” Delano said. “I approached my dad and

said, ‘Let’s get our captain’s licenses’. He agreed, and we took a license prep course on the Queen Mary in Long Beach in 1988, the same year I graduated from high school.” His first job with his license was with the Channel Island Harbor Hopper Ferry, a bar-hopping water taxi that provided great single-engine maneuvering skills experience, Delano said. In addition, he found it was a great way to meet girls. “The owner of Vessel Assist was looking for someone to take over his Ventura/ Channel Islands operation and approached another of the Harbor Hopper captains, who declined but referred my dad and me,” he said. “This was a few years after I had admired the job, so I was surprised and thrilled to get involved. My parents funded the early operation, and without that we would have never made it.” From 1992 to 1996, Delano was enrolled in the California Maritime Academy and worked part-time for the then-local Delta Vessel Assist operation where he learned more about the area waters, before the family operation expanded into Monterey Bay in 1997 with the first-ever Vessel Assist boat in the Santa Cruz Harbor. After that, in early 1998, Vessel Assist’s corporate office needed a new operator in San Francisco Bay, so the Delanos expanded there.

“A few years later,” Delano said, “we turned the Monterey operation over to another company, and about the same time the Delta operation needed a new company and we expanded into that area.” After selling their Ventura business, David and Sandy Delano moved north.

PRESENT DAY The entire San Francisco Bay and Delta are now covered by the family’s TowBoatUS fleet, which the family calls the finest fleet of response vessels on the entire West Coast. “We’re in the top 10 nationwide in cases for TowBoatUS,” Delano said, “and are the

premier marine assistance, towing and salvage company on the West Coast.” Vessel Assist was acquired by TowBoatUS in 2004, though they continued to operate as distinct companies. In 2015 when BoatUS was acquired by Berkshire Hathaway, a multinational conglomerate headed by Warren Buffett, the two combined into the single brand. Phil Delano and his parents remain at the helm of BoatUS San Francisco Bay and Delta, making the business a true family affair. In addition to himself, Phil’s parents continue to work with the business as do his daughter Audrey and son Joey.

Towing Service Capt. Delano mentioned the fact towing assistance can cost up to $450 an hour, which will quickly ruin a day on the water. That’s one reason so many boaters opt for a membership with BoatUS or Sea Tow. For less than $200 per year, boat owners buy peace of mind they can be towed, get a jump-start, have fuel delivered, get ungrounded and more. It saves them embarrassment and potentially higher insurance costs.

In the past, a retinue of family members have taken part: his sister Kathy for a time, three nephews in summer jobs, and his other nephew, Michael, currently working full-time as a deckhand.

MEMORIES Delano says over the years, they’ve undertaken some interesting tows. When asked what were among the most memorable, he ponders while absently scratching at his graying beard streaked with black. “It’s hard to pin that down, but we’ve seen boats in any number of unusual predicaments. We’ve lifted a few vessels off the Port of Oakland middle harbor steel sheet pile wall. These were 50- to 60-foot yachts perched on the wall where we had to hire a large crane barge to help us out,” he said. When asked about the difference between towing vs. salvage — a topic often raised by boaters — he said he could go on but it could take another hour to run down the history and the many particulars, including the fact that the laws of marine salvage apply to every vessel in U.S. navigable waters.

“Frankly, the primary difference in towing vs. salvage is the degree of peril.” — Capt. Phil Delano “Frankly, the primary difference in towing vs. salvage is the degree of peril. That can be to the customer’s vessel as well as our vessel and crews. The common guide is the ‘Blackwell factors’ — a famous 1867 marine salvage court decision. It would make an interesting Google search,” he said. He said he remains surprised at how many recreational boaters, many of them newbies, think if they run out of fuel or find themselves with a wonky motor, all they need do is hail the Coast Guard. Not the case, as many learn the hard way, paying up to $450 per hour for assistance. To find out more about the Delano family’s operation, visit TowBoatUSDelta.com.

‘TERRELL HORNE’ IN MARCH 2019, THE COAST Guard Cutter Terrell Horne was commissioned to celebrate the life of Senior Chief Petty Officer Terrell Edwin Horne III. In December 2012, Horne was killed by suspected drug smugglers who intentionally rammed the boat he was in during a law-enforcement investigation. Horne heroically pushed one of his shipmates out of the way of the oncoming vessel attack and sustained fatal injuries. Prior to this honor, the Coast Guard Sector Los Angeles-Long Beach command building was renamed for Horne during a May 2014 ceremony.

To answer this question, we consulted a feature story that appeared in our August 2019 issue. To read the whole story, visit SeaMagazine. com/a-little-art-a-little-science.

Not a Pleasure Cruise

“A sea trial isn’t the time to bring your whole family for a day on the water,” said Dick Simon of Dick Simon Yachts in Dana Point, Calif. “A boat under 30 feet will perform very differently with full fuel and water tanks and eight people aboard than at half tanks and three people.” A typical sea trial lasts 30 to 60 minutes. It may be longer if the vessel is large or has exceptionally complex systems. Build in extra time for getting through any no-wake zones. Decide whether it’s necessary to take the boat out on the open ocean to test upwind power and performance in a seaway. “If there’s no weather happening or you’re allowed to get up to speed in the bay, don’t waste everyone’s time going outside,” said Leanne McNally of South Coast Yachts in San Diego.

Lean on Experts

A surveyor should be present for the whole sea trial. Presumably, it’s someone you’ve interviewed prior to hiring her, as well as potentially one or two others, and

OCTOBER’S QUESTION:

What should I expect before and during the sea trial on a boat I’ve made an offer to buy? you should ask questions about systems and the findings, but give her time to do the job without interruptions. While underway, the surveyor will be inspecting systems, taking measurements and photos, and recording notes. The time to dig into the findings will be later when they’re assembled into a report, which is usually within 24 hours. If the seller is present, this may be a time to learn about the boat’s idiosyncrasies, but some brokers don’t want the seller aboard during the sea trial. If a hired captain is running the boat, don’t be shy about taking the wheel and asking him what he thinks. Remember, however, that no matter what you ask of whomever, what you’ll get back is an opinion. “The boat tells the story. Not the broker, captain or seller,” said Doug Wright, a San Diego-based marine surveyor. “A good broker will have done serious

preparation, including having the bottom cleaned and the props serviced, so there’s no speed-robbing growth on the day of the trial,” said Simon. “Hard growth on a prop can set up a vibration and can cause the boat to not reach its top-end rpm potential.”

Communications & Time Management

Making multiple working parts come together isn’t easy, so leverage your broker to help. Either you or your broker should make contact with all parties and create an itinerary for the day. When everyone works well together, the sea trial is more productive and goes more smoothly, and any negotiations that happen afterward are more amiable. As the buyer, don’t show up late, even if you’re flying in. Making other people wait means you’re not honoring their time and their role. Don’t lollygag through the sea trial. Get out, get things done and get back. If the boat doesn’t meet your expectations, say so and either move on or make a list of contingencies and repairs. Most importantly, treat the sea trial as a lesson. “If this boat ends up being yours, you’ll never have more people with more knowledge assembled at one time to help you learn the vessel,” said marine surveyor Brad Destache.
