INTRODUCTION >> Welcome
O
000
n behalf of the staff at Racer Productions, welcome to the 2012 Can-Am Grand National Cross Country Series, America’s largest off-road ATV and motorcycle racing series. The best off-road racers from the nation and all over the world follow the GNCC circuit, seeking out the best competition in their sport, and we’re glad you’re here to take part in the action! GNCC Racing combines two distinctly different aspects into one uniquely successful racing series. On one hand, this is high-dollar professional racing, with factory teams, custom-made equipment, and big salaries, prizes, and bonuses for the top riders. In addition to a generous NBC Sports Network television package and various forms of print publicity, GNCC Racers are stars in their sport and beyond. But on the other end of the spectrum are the thousands of dedicated amateur GNCC competitors who race for pride over glory, often the oldfashioned way: with a little help from family and friends. And it’s those grassroots efforts that have made GNCC such a unique national racing circuit. Be sure to check out the official series website, www .gnccracing.com, for all the information you’ll need on Can-Am GNCC Racing. The site features live timing and scoring, results, videos, and tons of info on your favorite racers. If you can’t make the races, be sure to catch the action every Sunday evening on NBC Sports Network or follow LIVE updates on race day via Twitter (@GNCCRacing) and Facebook.com/gnccracing. GNCC Racing owes a hearty thanks to all of its sponsors, especially Title Sponsor Can-Am and Feature Sponsors Parts Unlimited, Moose Racing, Maxxis, FMF, Amsoil, Dunlop, VP Racing Fuels, ITP, Motosport.com, Wiseco, and Leatt. Thanks also to Associate Sponsors Tire Balls, Moose Utility, Elka Suspension, Cometic, Twin Air, Thor, 100% Goggles, Fox Shox, Powersport Grafx, CV4, Factory Connection, Polisport, Hinson, HiPer, National Guard, All Balls Racing, Moto Tees, and Team Faith. It’s another banner year for Can-Am GNCC Racing, and we’re glad you’re a part of it. Find a spot in the woods and enjoy all the action GNCC Racing has to offer. Have a fun and safe weekend. We’re glad to see you at the races.

FOUR-WHEELED FRENZY The ATV racing world was struggling at the time, though. A rash of safety concerns in the late 1980s had scared ATV manufacturers from the racing scene. Factory rides dried up, and Honda dropped the dominant TRX250R from its lineup in 1989. But the

n the mid-1970s, enterprising motorcycle racing promoter Dave Coombs stumbled onto the small West Virginia town of Davis. Looking at the beautiful yet rugged terrain, “Big Dave” realized it would be the perfect spot to hold a motorcycle race. And best of all, it would be a tough one—an event only the strongest riders and machines could even finish. This was the way Big Dave liked it. He called the race the Blackwater 100—“Blackwater” for nearby Blackwater Falls, and “100” for the number of miles in the race. Blackwater soon became legendary: “America’s Toughest Race.” As Dave’s company, Racer Productions, grew, he and wife Rita began holding additional 100-mile events, and the series became known as the Wiseco 100 Miler Series and then the Grand National Cross Country Series. Three-wheeled ATVs joined the program in 1983, and fourwheelers became popular a few years later. Instead of 100-mile races, which often lasted five hours, the events were pared down to two hours for ATVs and three for bikes. The ultra-tough races were cool, but relatively few people were willing to try them. By then, the first stars of GNCC Racing had been born. “Fast” Eddie Lojak took control of the first bike GNCC title runs, with Ted Trey and Tom Tokay emerging as the first ATV stars. By the 1990s, GNCC Racing was known nationwide. Blackwater reigned as the toughest of all until the town of Davis shut the doors on the event in 1993. By then, the GNCC Series was going strong even without its flagship event. This was the era of the “Great Scotts”—Kentucky’s Scott Summers and Ohio’s Scott Plessinger—as well as “Fast” Freddy Andrews, an aggressive motocrosser-turnedwoods racer. Meanwhile, Indiana’s Bob Sloan and Pennsylvania’s Chuck DeLullo battled for the four-wheeled title. Summers became a hero to the whole off-road racing community, as his professionalism and public-relations skills introduced the sport to a much larger audience. Summers became one of the first off-road racers in the U.S. to make a real living as a racer. He wouldn’t be the last. Team Suzuki brought its powerful factory team into the series, led by Rodney Smith, a former motocrosser who had won races all over the world. When Smith, a Californian riding on a California-based team, signed on with GNCC, it signaled the emergence of the GNCC Series as the nation’s most prestigious off-road tour.
concerted efforts of the ATV aftermarket industry and a determined gang of racers kept the flame alive. Pennsylvania’s Barry Hawk became the superstar of the sport, notching an amazing seven straight GNCC ATV Championships from 1993 through 1999. By then, the ATVs were made up almost entirely of aftermarket equipment, even though they looked just like the old Hondas. Hawk’s rise culminated in a series of battles with Sloan. Sloan was so tough that he would win ATV races on Saturday and then race the bike events on Sunday, lending credibility to his “Ironman” moniker. Hawk wanted to topple Sloan on an ATV, so he copied his style and started racing a bike on Sunday. It would lead him in an entirely new direction. Sloan, meanwhile, had been diagnosed with a heart problem, but he kept on racing, true to his Ironman spirit. On the day his heart gave out in a hard-fought race to the finish, the series lost one of its greatest champions. In his memory, a GNCC round runs in Bob’s home state of Indiana and is nicknamed The Ironman.
GNCC FUN FACT: New Zealand’s Paul Whibley has won in the XC1 Bike class on a Honda, Suzuki, Kawasaki, and Yamaha.
Smith proved to be the ultimate GNCC lifer, as he fought off “too old” claims to retake the GNCC title in 2001; he would win it in 2002 and again in 2004, at the age of 40. The series kept drawing exciting new talent, but perhaps the strongest of all turned out to be the quad guy: Barry Hawk claimed the 2003 GNCC Bike title, and with eight GNCC titles (seven on the ATV and one on the bike), Hawk serves as the only rider to win championships on both sides of the spectrum. While Ballance was busy trying to break all of Hawk’s ATV

Dave Coombs poured his heart and sweat and life into the series. It wasn’t rare to see him lay out the course, run the riders’ meeting, patrol the track, give a TV interview, guide photographers to prime spots, keep tabs on the pits and parking, and then go out and race a few laps himself! The series lost Big Dave in 1998, leaving a major void in the sport he helped create. His family stepped up and continued to run the series, keeping true to Big Dave’s vision. His son-in-law, Jeff Russell, won the 1991 AMA National Enduro Championship; a few years later he began working side-by-side with Big Dave building the tracks. Today, JR is the GNCC Trail Boss. At the turn of the millennium, changes were Bill Ballance afoot in the series. Hawk had progressed so far on a bike that Yamaha offered him a full factory contract. The deal was too good to refuse, so he parked his ATV and a huge chase for his ATV title ensued. Kentucky’s Bill Ballance claimed it, leading a Southern surge in the series. More races were being hosted in the South, with help from a variety of regional figures like Buren Hamrick, who runs the popular MidEast Hare Scramble Series in the Carolinas and joined the GNCC crew to assist JR at the races. The series was about to grow a whole lot more. In 1999, Australian off-road sensation Shane Watts ventured to the U.S. after an incredible run through the international enduro scene. In 2000, he dominated the GNCC series and won races on five different sizes of KTM motorcycles. Watts’ personality drew plenty of attention too. Brash and outspoken, he showed up at all sorts of events—even motocross races—and rode well at them all. Unfortunately, he suffered a huge string of injuries and rarely had the patience to heal properly before returning. Watts, considered the Travis Pastrana of off-road, was never able to win the GNCC crown again.

records, his championships were gaining attention too, as ATV manufacturers slowly began to introduce sporty models again and the sport grabbed another gear. Ballance kept winning and Yamaha offered him a factory contract. The other manufacturers soon followed, and new manufacturers like Can-Am and KTM even jumped in with race machines and factory rides. Suzuki young gun Chris Borich snagged the 2009 and 2010 GNCC ATV titles, but not before Ballance smashed Hawk’s alltime championship record. Hawk hung up his boots at the end

of 2010 and now spends his time assisting JR in his Trail Boss duties, having become a year-round asset to the Racer Productions crew. Ballance has a little more breathing room until the next multi-time champion comes along. Borich returned in 2011 to gain his third consecutive championship, but with the increase in young talent moving up each year, can he hold on long enough to challenge Ballance’s nine-time record? Shane Watts The other GNCC classes kept growing too. The morning race created its own stars, like eight-time Women’s Champion Traci Cecco, who scored a factory Yamaha deal, and KTM rider Angel Atwell. The Utility classes evolved from a division for farmers into a full-blown race class, with factory teams and hungry privateers pushing it every week. On the bike side, the series had evolved from a single race in a small West Virginia town to a global phenomenon. In 2005, KTM imported Finland’s Juha Salminen, one of the most talented riders the series has ever seen, and he dominated the Bikes game for two years. Isle of Man ace David Knight took his place as well on his way to the 2007 and 2008 titles; New Zealand’s Paul Whibley claimed the 2009 GNCC title, and Australia’s Josh Strang won in 2010. In 2011, Ohio’s Charlie Mullins, possibly the first champ to have gone all the way through the GNCC ranks from youth to pro, became the first American champ since Rodney smith in 2004. Mullins set the bar for a whole new generation of amateur racers who have now seen the American dream play out before their eyes. GNCC Racing has been making strides in the exposure department for years, but what really separates the series is the elevated television package that began in 2001 and has since become part of a fifty-two-week package on the NBC Sports Network. It’s also a big credit to a man named Dave Coombs, who thought this whole thing up thirty years ago. Even with all the growth, there has always been camaraderie and a family atmosphere at the events. Win or lose, pro or amateur, GNCC Racing is all about simply trying your best against the terrain. It’s the way Big Dave wanted it back then, and it’s the way it remains today.

GRAND NATIONAL CROSS COUNTRY SERIES
FANS’ GUIDE THE BASICS OF THE CAN-AM GNCC SERIES HOW DOES GNCC RACING WORK? Six races are held each weekend, and sometimes seven, depending on the special-events schedule. Each race contains several classes, with each class separated into individual starting-line rows that begin one minute apart. ATVs run on Saturday and Bikes run on Sunday, and each day’s races are divided into Youth, Amateur, and Pro. Special events include UTVs and 50cc machines, which run Saturday evenings on certain weekends.
HOW LONG ARE THE RACES?
THE 2012 GNCC SOUVENIR YEARBOOK
DO THE RIDERS GET TO PRACTICE? No, there is no practice or parade lap at the GNCC races. However, you may walk or bicycle the track prior to your race. The course is open for inspection Friday at 3:00 p.m., while Pro Bike riders may only inspect the course on Saturday afternoon. GNCC does offer practice at the opening GNCC round in Florida, although it is not practice on the actual racetrack, just terrain similar to the racetrack.
DO THE RACERS PIT? WHAT CAN AND CAN’T THEY DO DURING A PIT STOP?
FREDRICKSON
INTRODUCTION >> Fans’ Guide
On ATV day, Youth riders aged 6-15 race for one hour starting at 8 a.m. A two-hour race for the Women, Utility, Super Senior, and Novice classes starts at 10 a.m., and then the Pro, Pro Am, A, and B riders race at 1 p.m. At events holding UTV or 50cc races, the UTV or 50cc events begin at 4:30 p.m. and last for one hour. On Bike days, Youth riders aged 7-15 race for 90 minutes at 8 a.m.; Women, Super Senior, and Novice riders race for two hours at 10 a.m.; and the Pro, A, and B riders race for three hours starting at 1 p.m.
HOW LONG IS A GNCC COURSE?
Due to the length of the race, all riders will have to pit at least once to refuel. During the pit stop, riders and crew are allowed to make adjustments and/or repairs to the machine. The rider is also allowed to get a drink and change goggles and other gear. Amateur riders may pit anywhere on the course, but XC1 and XC2 riders must pit only in the designated pro pit area.
GNCC courses usually run between 10 and 12 miles for adult classes and 3-5 miles for youth.
WHERE ARE THE RIDERS FROM?
HOW DOES THE START WORK?
Though the GNCC series is primarily run in the eastern half of the United States, series participants hail from all fifty states and numerous other nations and continents.
All starts are dead-engine (engine off) with the exception of Youth ATVs, which are live-engine. The blue flag will signal all riders to turn off their engines, after which the start is approximately 30 seconds away. The starter will hold out his left arm, signifying 10 seconds to the start, and the announcer will shout “10 seconds.” At that signal, all crew members must step away. Between 8 and 10 seconds later, the starter will wave the green flag and the race is on! Any rider taking off with the wrong row will be penalized,
HOW MUCH MONEY DO THESE RACERS MAKE? The top pro racers make a lucrative living in the series thanks to prize money and sponsorship endorsements. Racing is a fulltime job for a professional GNCC championship contender.
16
WWW.GNCCRACING.COM
HOW ARE THE RIDERS SCORED? Each class is scored separately using a computerized transponder mounted to the ATV or bike.
GNCC FUN FACT: The only father and son to have won XC1 GNCC races are Jeff (1991) and Kailub Russell (2011).
and any rider who misses the start of his or her class must enter the racecourse at the starting line and complete the start chute.
HOW IS THE TRACK DESIGNED? Careful scouting is required to lay out a GNCC course, which may include trails, footpaths, roads, hills, motocross tracks, or any type of terrain navigable by a bike or ATV. Marking, cutting, tampering with, or otherwise changing the course in any manner is strictly prohibited. Course modifications may only be made by an official.
Race arrow signs are used, and the marked course is within 25 feet of race arrows. Riders must also stay within the confines of the following markers: double arrows posted on both sides of the trail, ribbons, signs, stakes, hay bales, barrels, motocross tracks, grass tracks, etc.
FREDRICKSON
HOW DO THE RIDERS KNOW WHERE TO GO?
DO YOUTH RIDERS RACE THE SAME COURSE AS THE PROS? Course lengths vary. Normally, Youth classes run a 3- to 5-mile course, which is about one-third the length of the full track for adults. The most difficult sections are removed to ensure the smaller machines can complete the laps safely.
In amateur classes, first place receives 20 points and each position down receives one less point through twentieth. In XC1 and XC2, the winner receives 30 points, with 25 for second, 21 for third, 18 for fourth, and 16 for fifth, then one point less down to twentieth. XC1 and XC2 classes count every race; amateur riders only count their best nine scores.
MOORE
HOW DO THE POINTS WORK?
WHAT DO THE COLORED FLAGS MEAN? A green flag signals the start of the race. A yellow flag signals the riders to use caution. A white flag means there is one lap to go. The checkered flag signifies the end of the race.
WHAT DOES THE RED NUMBER PLATE MEAN? XC1 riders utilize a red number-plate background with a white number; XC2 riders use a green background with a white number. The points leader in each respective class will run the opposite color combination (red on white instead of white on red, for example).
There’s a ton of information on the official website of the Can-Am GNCC series, www.gnccracing.com.

THE NEW KING OF QUADS CHRIS BORICH PUTS TITLES ON LOCKDOWN // By Jason Weigandt
THE 2012 GNCC SOUVENIR YEARBOOK
INTRODUCTION >> 2011 Season Review: ATVs
C
hris Borich used to chase history, but now everyone is chasing him. The past-champions list in the GNCC ATV ranks are filled with all-time greats who delivered multiple championships, and before Borich could break through and deliver a GNCC ATV crown of his own, he had to go through one of those greats and earn it. Now that he’s reached the top, he seems ready to set some records of his own.
Borich claims he doesn’t purposely wait until the last lap to launch an attack, preferring to say it just works out that way. But a quick look at the record proves different—and sets the stage for more epic come-from-behind charges in the future. How many? The previous GNCC ATV Champion, Bill Ballance, won nine straight titles. It’s not out of the question that Borich, who will be 29 when the 2012 season kicks off, could go for ten. But each year, the depth of his competition seems to grow.

Borich has won the last three GNCC ATV Championships (2009-’11), and he’s done it in grand fashion. Even his win totals, as impressive as they are, don’t indicate just how fast he can go. In the thirteen-race GNCC tour, he won nine races in 2009, ten in 2010, and seven in 2011. But it’s not just the wins and the titles that impress— it’s the way in which he delivered those wins and championships. Borich doesn’t cruise around the pits bragging about his talents, and he doesn’t launch into big celebrations when he wins. On the track, he’ll often hang back early and let someone else hold the lead. It’s only on the last lap when a different side of the quiet Borich comes out. That’s when he turns into a beast. No one has figured out how to beat him with any consistency.
The 2011 season started well for Borich on his Rockstar Yoshimura Suzuki, as he quickly won the first two races in Florida and Georgia. A sputtering engine cost him a shot at round three, where Foremost/Warnert Can-Am’s

Factory Can-Am’s Adam McGill put in a solid year for second in XC1 Pro.
GNCC FUN FACT: Factory FMF/KTM’s Maria Forsberg is the first female rider in U.S. history to race under the KTM factory semi for the season.
Rockstar Yoshimura Suzuki’s Chris Borich took home nine of thirteen race wins in 2011 en route to his third straight XC1 title. Adam McGill snagged the win. Borich quickly responded by taking round four in South Carolina. “I was kind of bummed two weeks ago,” Borich said then. “We rode our hearts out at the last race and pretty much had it won, and then we had an electrical problem. So it was good to get this win today.” Then came the newcomers—and bad luck for the champ. XC1 Pro rookie Brian Wolf won a muddy Indy 100 GNCC, and then Pro-Am rider Walker Fowler shocked everyone by railing to a win from the second row at the Rock Run GNCC in Pennsylvania. Borich took secondplace finishes both times, then suffered a mechanical problem at West Virginia’s Snowshoe, while McGill scored his second win of the year. With that, McGill took over the GNCC points lead, prompting another run from Borich. It didn’t take long, as McGill ran into problems of his own at the next race while Borich won. The summer break then yielded to the Unadilla GNCC, where Fowler launched another spectacular attack to win his
second overall of the season. Wolf then won at Mountain Ridge. All of these wins by other riders clearly had Borich fired up—he needed to put title number three on lockdown. He did so by sweeping the final three races on the schedule in Ohio, Indiana, and Tennessee, making it a season full of comebacks both on the track and in the standings.
OTHER CHAMPIONS The ATV ranks featured many great stories beyond Borich’s championship in XC1, including Fowlers’ amazing, perfect season with thirteen Pro-Am wins. The Utility ranks featured a knock-down, drag-out duel between Can-Am riders Michael Swift and Bryan Buckhannon in Open 4x4, with Buckhannon winning the title in a tie-breaker. Yamaha’s Traci Cecco delivered an amazing eighth title in the ATV Women’s class, while Cliff Beasley won the U2 Championship and Kevin Trantham won 4x4 Lites. And in the UTV division, Team National Guard Coastal Drilling Polaris, with William Yokley at the wheel, took the overall championship.

GRAND NATIONAL CROSS COUNTRY SERIES
LONG TIME COMING CHARLIE MULLINS IS THE FIRST HOMEGROWN GNCC CHAMPION // By Jason Weigandt
T
he last decade has introduced a lot of changes to Can-Am Grand National Cross Country racing, but through it all, one thing remained constant: Charlie Mullins was gunning for the top spot in the sport. The Ohio native blasted through the GNCC Youth and Amateur ranks with his eyes on the top prize, and while he faced ultra-stiff pro competition from every corner of the globe, he never gave up on his pursuit of the crown. Finally, in 2011, he broke through—but like any championship a lifetime in the making, it wasn’t easy!
THE 2012 GNCC SOUVENIR YEARBOOK
INTRODUCTION >> 2011 Season Review: Bikes
THE CHASE Each year, Mullins would come into the season ready for greatness, but each time an international star would edge him for the title. Juha Salminen and David Knight gobbled up four GNCC titles from 2005—2008, then New Zealand’s Paul Whibley and Australia’s Josh Strang delivered in 2009 and 2010. For 2011, the humble, quiet Mullins hooked up with the powerhouse FMF KTM off-road team, hoping the big squad could find that last small piece needed to deliver the title. And when Mullins railed to the opening-round win in Florida, all seemed well. However, he’d won races early in the season before only to falter later, and the competition wasn’t going to make it easy on him. Am-Pro Yamaha’s Whibley and FMF Suzuki’s Strang were quickly racking up wins of their own, setting up a superb three-man battle for the crown. The trio traded wins as the series rolled from the South to the North, the parity so great that by the sixth race, each rider had collected two wins each and the points were nearly deadlocked at the front. The races were spectacular, too, highlighted by round three in North Carolina, where Strang and Mullins swapped the lead all day, pushing until the final corner when Mullins crashed, allowing Strang to steal the victory. A new contender emerged, as XC1 Pro rookie and two-time XC2 Lites Champion Kailub Russell began battling for wins, including an epic threehour fight with Whibley in Ohio. Through it all, Strang held a slight edge as the series reached the annual summer break. But this time Mullins was determined to come back stronger for the final stretch.

Ohio’s Charlie Mullins finally achieved his childhood dream of winning an XC1 Pro GNCC title.
AmPro Yamaha’s Paul Whibley put a on charge in the second half of 2011, claiming second place overall.
FMF/Makita Suzuki’s Josh Strang got his first win of 2011 at Steele Creek after Mullins washed out just a few feet in front of the finish.
GNCC FUN FACT: At 11 years old, New York ATV racer Hunter Hart is the youngest GNCC Youth Overall Champion ever.
BREAKDOWN “I’ve always had the speed, and I’ve always had the conditioning,” Mullins explains. “But I admit, I was known as a guy who cracked under pressure. I wanted to put that label to rest and prove I can perform when I need to. I put my head down and worked really hard over the summer break and got focused.” Things changed immediately when the tour resumed at Unadilla in September. Strang crashed hard with Cory Buttrick on the first lap, knocking him way back. Up front, Mullins and Russell went back and forth before Mullins locked down another win. Mullins kept the drive alive by winning the rough and rocky Mountain Ridge GNCC in Pennsylvania, while Strang suffered more bad luck. Russell grabbed his first career win at the Power Line Park GNCC in Ohio, but a relentless Mullins won again at the Ironman GNCC in Indiana. Heading into the finale at Loretta Lynn Ranch, Mullins appeared to have the title in his sights during the two-day event, but his engine locked up while he was leading. It was a heartbreaker, but the now rock-steady Mullins shrugged it off and delivered an even more dominant win on day two, easily enough to clinch the championship.
With it, Mullins became the first American-born GNCC Champion in seven seasons, and the first rider to graduate all the way from the GNCC Youth Series to the top step of the GNCC XC1 Championship ladder. “I remember doing this series when I was a kid on a CR80, and to come this far, my family and so many people out there have helped make this happen,” Mullins said. “To get to this level is a dream come true.”
FMF/KTM’s Kailub Russell had a stellar rookie season in 2011 and even secured his first career win, at Power Line Park.
FMF/KTM’s Charlie Mullins and family showed their patriotism, as Mullins is the first American-born GNCC Champion since 2004

eorgia’s distinctive red clay makes “The General” what it is. If there’s rain, the soil gets soft and builds deep ruts, so be very careful when approaching traffic and bottlenecks. But when it’s dry, this course gets hard and fast. The General features a motocross track with some decent jumps at Aonia Pass MX, but if you’re not an aerialist, don’t worry—the jumps are tamed for the GNCC. The motocross track makes for a good passing spot if you can’t get around someone in the woods, but remember, you can only make up a few seconds out of the two-hour race there, so don’t take too many risks. Hill climbs aren’t a big issue, but getting clean may be, as that red Georgia clay is pretty tough to wash off both man and machine. MOORE

bout an hour south of Orlando, and two hours from the madness of Daytona Bike Week, the River Ranch GNCC promises first-class accommodations. The Ranch serves as a vacation, retreat, and training spot for people year-round, but for GNCC racers, it will also serve as a rough-and-tumble 2012 GNCC season opener. The track is typical of Florida races, most closely resembling the Vero Beach, Florida, GNCC we ran back in 2007. The sandy conditions will whoop out, and with some palmetto roots thrown into the mix, this one will test who has and who hasn’t been training during the off-season. To fit into the Daytona Bike Week schedule, this race runs a much different schedule than the other rounds, with ATVs racing on Sunday and bikes on Tuesday. Also, this is the only GNCC on the tour offering practice. ATVs get a practice day on Saturday before racing on Sunday, and bikes get to practice on Monday before their race on Tuesday. Practice will take place on a separate track, and a separate fee applies. This is an opportunity to make sure you and your equipment are ready for the new season—not an opportunity to learn the track. MOORE

he picturesque Steele Creek Campground hosts this round, and the Blue Ridge Mountains in the background make it a real beauty. Campers will appreciate the hookups and the small country store located on the premises. This is a classic cross-country track, with plenty of creek crossings, mud bogs, and rocks. As the race goes on, a lot of tree roots become exposed, making for a rough ride when it’s dry and a slick track when it rains. The coolest part of the track is the creek crossing near the pits, as the track weaves around next to a stream before eventually plunging into it. Then riders have to duck their heads to get under a concrete bridge, from which fans can watch. It can get pretty cold at Steele Creek, so prepare to dress warmly. The facility is an actual campground—hookups are available, but separate fees apply for camping. MOORE

he Big Buck course presents the standard GNCC obstacles—everything from tight woods to fields, creek crossings, rocks, and hill climbs. It’s a fast, wide-open course, but it’s definitely not easy! Course designers Jeff Russell and Buren Hamrick usually create a spectacular creek jump where the riders launch off of a bank and over the water (with a path around the jump for those who aren’t as comfortable with airtime). Henry Turner and his family own the Big Buck facility, and they’re big fans and supporters of GNCC Racing. Even the town of Union gets behind the Big Buck, big-time. Since the course gets rough, riders need to be smart as new lines open up throughout the race. The winner will usually be the rider who runs through the trees fastest.

s one of the newest additions to the GNCC circuit, the Mammoth GNCC is one of those destination events, similar to what we see at Westgate River Ranch and Snowshoe Mountain. There’s plenty to do at Park Mammoth Resort in between the racing action, with on-site accommodations including lodging, shooting sports, 18 holes of golf, and restaurants for the family. The course layout winds throughout the terrain of an old golf course—most likely a first on the GNCC circuit. There are quite a bit of elevation changes, and it’s a heavily wooded area, which is perfect for GNCC Racing. The terrain is a bit rugged out there as a result of the nearby historic Cave Country, so don’t let the pretty scenery trick you.

fter the success of the Ironman GNCC in Crawfordsville, and with the good relationships with the IXCR and the Mid America Series, it only seemed natural to bring another round of the series to Indiana. A lot of riders come from the Hoosier State, so we thought we’d give the state a try in the spring. The new Indy 100 takes place at the Lawrence County Recreation Facility, which is owned and operated by the ABATE group of Indiana. Since the land is already a riding park, we’ve found some solid parking ground for springtime in Indiana! And the facility is located about 20 miles south of Bloomington, which makes for a good location in terms of hotels and restaurants for GNCC racers and their families. The terrain will be similar to the Ironman, with milder temperatures and possibly some rain—so be sure to prepare for anything. The course will have plenty of rolling hills, wide-open fields, and the typical Midwestern woods terrain, so it shouldn’t be anything you haven’t seen here before.

lthough there isn’t a Pennsylvania round on the schedule this year, West Virginia’s Mountaineer Run serves as the new location for the “hometown” crowd and isn’t far from the Racer HQ in Morgantown. The facility is used to housing large groups of people, as Marvin’s Mountain Top is known for years of music and other large festivals. Not quite as rough as Snowshoe, this WV land is definitely going to be technical and rocky with a fair amount of elevation change. The trail has been used for years, but there’s a whole side of the mountain you may not even know existed, so don’t prejudge the layout until you’ve experienced it. MOORE

he toughest, most spectacular, and most unique race on the tour, the Snowshoe GNCC is set in the ski village at Snowshoe, West Virginia’s largest ski resort. The array of hotels, shops, and restaurants provide plenty of entertainment, as well as an amazing golf course and some of the best mountain bike trails in the country. The famed Blackwater 100 was the original GNCC race, and it took place in the same part of the state. To celebrate the Blackwater heritage, the Snowshoe race starts “in town.” Unlike a typical GNCC dead-engine start in a field, riders at the Snowshoe line up on a paved road in groups of five, starting live-engine every five seconds. Once the riders are on the course, everything beautiful disappears. Deep mud bogs, tree roots, and near-vertical hill climbs are enough to stop almost everyone, and if not for the help of the ever determined GNCC fans known as “mud fleas,” some sections may not be passable at all. In the tradition of the old Blackwater, which was known as the “World’s Toughest Race,” the Snowshoe GNCC is the ultimate test for a cross-country racer.

ohn Penton, a pioneer of off-road motorcycle racing in America, originally imported the KTM motorcycle from Austria into the United States. This event’s name is a lasting tribute to the man who did so much for racing here. You must plan for the weather at this event—it’s an awesome place to race, but it’s often either bone-dry and dusty or covered in sticky mud. And sometimes it’s both! If the weather holds, the track is great, with a nice mix of fast trails with some fresh, tight stuff thrown in. There’s nothing too difficult here in terms of hills or mud bogs, even when it’s muddy. The Sunday Creek motocross track is a fun one, with a few simple jumps, one nice step-up, and plenty of wideopen corners for flat tracking (and passing). If it does rain, make sure you have extra goggles and gloves ready, because it becomes difficult to navigate around the slippery course.

ocated near Wheeling, West Virginia, Power Line Park is on old strip-mine property. Mud is always a factor here, as the course runs across fire roads that pack up and hold water. The topsoil is clay but gives way to a rocky base soil, and there are some rock piles around too. The mud isn’t as slippery to your tires or as sticky on your machine as it is at, say, the John Penton. Still, you can run into some trouble in sections where water drags up onto banks. You’ll be sliding around, so try to hit the hills with some speed for momentum. This is standard GNCC stuff: tight woods, mud, and elevation changes. Some high-speed sections are usually thrown in, including some wideopen grass-track areas. Ohio has some dedicated off-road fans, so you’ll see a big crowd here and they can usually be found at the “Power Line Mud Hole” pulling riders through the thick swamp-like crossing.

his race became an instant classic after its 2005 debut. The legendary Unadilla Raceway has been hosting motocross races since the late 1960s, and it enjoys a worldwide reputation as one of the fastest, roughest moto courses ever made. The full-scale Unadilla motocross track (“U1”) will be used for the GNCC, which means wide, sweeping corners and some very steep elevation changes. There are big jumps, but they’re formed using the natural elevation of the terrain—no peaked doubles here. The “U2” Unadilla amateur track will be used as well, so you’ll likely see two motocross tracks per lap here. The woods are fresh and tight and covered in that trademark black New York loam. It rains here quite a bit, and the course will get tough due to the soft soil. But it offers better traction when wet than the slippery Ohio clay. The New Yorkers are a hearty bunch either way, though, and they’re not afraid to tackle the mud.

raditionally the finale, the Ironman is one of the most popular races on the circuit and a favorite among riders. After a successful last-minute reschedule last year, it now precedes Loretta Lynn’s as the penultimate round in the series. A local Polaris dealership hosts the event, and local farmers have provided plenty of land for the track. Ironman GNCC banners hang downtown, and the spectator count is incredible. The event has grown so much that it’s overflowing from race to full-on industry trade show, with Yamaha, Can-Am, and Polaris displaying next year’s models. The land in this area is totally flat, but the course runs near riverbanks for plenty of elevation changes. In fact, the hills here are some of the steepest on the circuit and become the toughest sections if it rains. If it doesn’t, the riders will hit the rocky creeks, and since the race runs in October, it can get cold, so try to stay dry. Outside of the woods, the course routes across harvested cornfields. From tight trails to technical hill climbs, gullies, rock sections, and creeks, all on top of great dirt, this track is a true test for a cross-country racer’s all-around skills.

ormally a spring round, this is the oldest race on the GNCC circuit, and it draws a lot of riders. And yes, the property is owned by the world famous Coal Miner’s Daughter, Loretta Lynn. If she’s not on tour somewhere, she’ll even come over and say hi to the racers! This year it serves as the season finale, which makes for an exciting event, as champions are often crowned at the final round. The ranch is an expansive campground facility, which means there are hookups for those with campers. As for the track, the soil is sandy, so the place gets whooped out. Most of all, be in shape. The course, which also features technical woods sections and off-camber obstacles, will cause you to tire quickly if you aren’t conditioned to the intense terrain in Tennessee. A national-level motocross track, which hosts the Red Bull AMA Amateur National Motocross Championship and the ATV Dirt Days, is also included in the lap. The jumps are tamed down a bit for the GNCC, so rounded tabletops will replace the big doubles—don’t worry if you’re not a motocross ace. MOORE

FAN RULES, LIVE TIMING, AND TV PACKAGE
Fan Rules RESPONSIBILITY: GNCC Racing, like all motorsports, can be dangerous. Due to the nature of GNCC Racing, which utilizes an open-course, “cross-country” race circuit, there is no fence barrier around the course. It is your responsibility to keep yourself and your children a safe distance from the course. Spectators are cautioned to never turn their backs to oncoming racers.
THE 2012 GNCC SOUVENIR YEARBOOK
QUICK FILL >> Fan Rules, Live Timing, and TV Package
COURSE REGULATIONS: The racing course is off-limits to fans. Only registered racers and authorized personnel are permitted on the course. You may cross the course only when you have determined that it is safe to do so. Special care must be taken when viewing events in high-traffic areas on the course and in the paddock and staging areas.
CAMPFIRES: Only small (20”), self-contained campfires are permitted.
CURFEW: Quiet time is 10:00 p.m. nightly. No loud generators are allowed after this time. GENERAL INFORMATION is located at Rider Registration. RIDER INFORMATION is located at Rider Registration. FIRST AID is located at the Ambulance Station adjacent to Rider Registration. SECURITY is headquartered at the Main Gate. LOST & FOUND is located at Rider Registration.
RELEASE OF LIABILITY: All persons entering the premises must sign the liability-release waiver. Parents or legal guardians with children under 18 years of age must be present to sign liability-release waivers on behalf of accompanying minors.
PIT VEHICLES / PIT RIDING: No pit bikes, quads, scooters, golf carts, etc., are allowed.
PETS: All pets must be on leashes. No vicious or barking pets are permitted. ACCESS: For security purposes, all spectator gates are closed daily from midnight to 6:00 a.m. Please plan accordingly.

PIT CREWS: Riders are responsible for all crew members, family members, and guests. TICKETS: You must wear your wristband at all times. If you leave the facility, you must have your wristband on in order to re-enter the property. Please do not remove wristbands while attending events. Live Laps Texting Service
L
ive Laps Texting Service, which allows fans to keep track of GNCC action in real time, is back for 2012. The service sends live alerts and race data directly to the palm of your hand, no matter where you are. Simply text the word help to m@gncclive.com for instructions on how to choose from three different live GNCC coverage options. 1. Subscribe to a racer for the day for automatic alerts each time a racer completes a lap. Text the word ‘sub (racer #)’ - Example: sub 199 Text the word ‘unsub’ to m@gncclive.com to cancel a subscription to one or all of the riders being followed. The system will respond with codes to unsubscribe starting with the letter ‘u’ followed by two digits, i.e., “u15”. 2. Periodically check on a racer. If you text more than one rider’s number, the system will respond with a text for each racer on the list. Separate each racing number with a space, i.e., 16 199 512. Text ‘(racer #)’ - Example: 199 3. Follow the Overall Top 20 or a certain class. Text ‘c or class’ and the system will respond with a list of codes and corresponding classes. The code will be the letter ‘c’ followed by either one or two digits, i.e., c6, c10. Reply with a class code, and the system will respond back with the current unofficial class results you selected. Live Laps Texting Service is free, but message and data rates may apply. Consult your mobile plan.

GNCC MEDIA HOUSE AND DEALER CHALLENGE
GNCC Media House RODNEY TOMBLIN GNCC Announcer Rodney Tomblin’s voice is inseparable from GNCC Racing. Beginning his career in radio, Rodney eventually found his way into the motocross world and was introduced to the GNCC series soon after. His trademark announcing style and voice echoes across the GNCC event grounds each weekend, bringing fans all the latest info and updates.
THE 2012 GNCC SOUVENIR YEARBOOK
A new addition to the GNCC announcing team for 2012 is Delilah Long. After attending her first GNCC in 2009, Delilah fell in love with the sport, and when the co-announcer’s mic opened up, she jumped at the opportunity. Says Delilah, “I never thought I would be helping call the races, but now that the opportunity is here, I‘m excited!”

JASON HOOPER RacerTV Producer After growing up racing motocross, Jason Hooper found himself in the GNCC world after snagging a job with Racer X Illustrated. Covering the races via photo reports, Hoop continued to expand his involvement, and soon he was heading up production at RacerTV. As if that’s not enough, Hoop also maintains the popular DigitalOffroad.com.
JARED BOLTON RacerTV Camera Man/Web Contributor Jared Bolton discovered his passion for shooting video in 2006, and after stepping away from full-time racing, he landed a gig with RacerTV in 2010. From there, “Bolt-On” also began contributing to Quick Fill and heading up Tuesday Toolbox each week on GNCCRacing.com.
JASON WEIGANDT RacerTV Host A major presence in motorsports, Jason Weigandt got his start as a series PR guy and eventually began announcing. Now you can catch him calling races in the Lucas Oil Pro Motocross Championship and also heading up Racer X Online. Of course, he still finds the time to return to his GNCC roots and call the action for RacerTV.

after college and headed to the MX Sports office to serve as the series’ Media Manager. She’s responsible for much of the content at GNCCRacing.com, and she’s also the brains behind the series’ social media presence.
BARRY HAWK Web Contributor Barry Hawk is one of the most decorated racers in GNCC history, with eight ATV Championships and the 2003 Bike Championship. After retiring from racing, he went to work on the GNCC Track Crew, then began contributing to Quick Fill each week. There’s no better source for firsthand insider info from the racers.
KEN HILL Series Photographer Ken Hill began shooting photos of the GNCC races when his kids started racing, and he soon got involved with the popular ATVRiders.com and ATVInsider Magazine. In 2007, Ken made shooting photos his full-time job, working at the races and managing industry photo shoots while also penning reviews and additional series coverage.

Dealer Challenge
G
NCC is excited to announce the Parts Unlimited Dealer Challenge Program for the 2012 Can-Am GNCC Series. The Dealer Challenge is designed to reward local dealerships for helping GNCC Racers achieve their goal of competing in a national race series, while also giving racers an opportunity to present a benefit package to their local dealership when seeking sponsorship for the upcoming season.
Once you sign up a team of four racers—including ATV, bike, and UTV—your team will be entered into the GNCC results database, where points will be tracked according to how each rider finishes in his/her class in the best nine of thirteen GNCC rounds. Team results will always appear on the Motosport.com GNCC Results Page on www.gnccracing. com, and will be featured in the race report after each event, highlighting the winning team and race results. The best part about it? There’s absolutely no fee to sign up! The purpose of the Dealer Challenge is to encourage local dealerships to become more involved in amateur racing, as GNCC recognizes the importance of the grassroots in our sport. The team with the most points at the end of the season will be declared the winners, and the dealer will receive a trip for two to Las Vegas for the 2013 Parts Unlimited Dealer Show and VIP access to the Las Vegas Supercross, including three nights in a hotel and round-trip flights. This is in addition to the variety of advertisement opportunities on both GNCC and Racer X Illustrated’s online and print assets. If you didn’t get the chance to make a team for 2012, start planning for 2013 now!

CAN-AM INTERVIEW
Can-Am: Race Ready
S
ince 2007, Can-Am has served as the GNCC title sponsor, offering the series a unique introduction to some of the company’s most extreme products. Any GNCC crew member can attest to that, as they operate Can-Am machines every weekend at the races. We spoke with Can-Am Media and Public Relations Manager Chaz Rice about the company’s latest generation of race machines and its impact on the 2012 GNCC season.
never has there been a machine in the U2 class that has been more ready to race right off the showroom floor than the Renegade 800R X xc.
SIDE-BY-SIDE RACING IS BECOMING MORE POPULAR BY THE MINUTE. HOW HAS THE GROWTH IMPACTED BRP? Huge impact. We knew it would be popular, but its growth has been amazing. This year will be a very exciting year for Can-Am side-by-side racers.
TELL US ABOUT THE EXPANSION OF CAN-AM’S RACE SUPPORT PROGRAM FOR 2012.
AFTER COMPLETELY REDESIGNING THE CAN-AM OUTLANDER THIS YEAR, WHAT ADVANTAGES CAN RACERS EXPECT TO SEE? From a racer’s standpoint, the new machines take a big step in performance and durability. The frame is completely new, the rear trailing arms are redesigned, the cooling capacity is increased—it’s completely new from the ground up. Can-Am ATV racers will certainly appreciate the engineering that went into the vehicles.
Sunshine Willis was the lucky sweepstakes winner of this Can-Am Outlander 650 XT at the 2011 Ironman.

QUICK FILL >> Can-Am Interview
BRP has had the DS 450 Amateur Support Program for several years now. This year, BRP added a program where approved racers can receive a discount on the Outlander, Renegade, or Commander. It could be up to $1,500 off the price of a new or unused vehicle. It is a great program, and any Can-Am dealer can tell you more about it.
I can’t wait to watch XC1 Pro Chris Bithell battle for a championship on the DS 450. Everyone at BRP is pulling for him. I’m also excited to watch the new-generation Outlander and Renegade ATVs out on the course. I want to see what racers like Bryan Buckhannon, Cliff Beasley, and Michael Swift can do on the new bikes. It’s always a new challenge to race a new vehicle, but I know everyone is up to it.
WHAT MAKES THE RENEGADE EVEN MORE RACE-READY THAN BEFORE? Similar to the Outlander, the Renegade was completely redesigned as well. There are really too many improvements and innovations to list, but
