OVER THE PAST CENTURY, THE GEODESIC DOME HAS EVOLVED FROM ITS ORIGINAL USE AS A PLANETARIUM TO A TOURIST-ATTRACTING PAVILION FOR EXHIBITS, to specialty buildings for events, to the most energy, material and space-efficient housing for dome dwellers all over the world. Covered with copper-painted metal shingles, the angled roof and dormers of this building make it a standout. A noteworthy design that deserves a noteworthy finish. For this home, Durapon 70 was the top choice. Chosen for its flexibility, durability and long-term performance, Dura Coat’s colorfast, cool pigments deflect UV rays to retain color and gloss. The tough surface of the premium coating resists installation scratching, scuffing, marring, staining and transit abrasion. A primary choice for galvalume, hot-dipped galvanized and aluminum substrate, when Durapon 70 is paired with Dura Coat’s thick-film primer for coastal and heavy industrial environments, the result is a top-of-the-line coil coating. Make the top choice for your building. For more information about this naturefriendly formulation that complies with the Cool Roof Rating Council, Energy Star and LEED standards, and reduces the carbon footprint, call 951-341-6500 or 256-350-4300.

BEST PRACTICES IN LIGHTING ›› HUMAN-CENTRIC LIGHTING

A Brief History of Light ... And Us Noted biology and evolutionary science writer Carl Zimmer wrote an article in The New York Times at the end of last year “Seeking the Gears of Our Inner Clock.” Zimmer postulated that throughout any day a clock ticks inside our bodies. An occasional writer myself, I have been studying and writing about light’s overall effect on human biological functioning and have developed an AIA-accredited Health, Safety and Welfare lecture, called “Light and Us,” covering human evolutionary development and how natural or artificial light effects peoples’ Circadian Rhythm (CR). Different spectral lighting and electric-power distribution have repeatedly proved to have direct positive or negative effects on bodily hormone production. Our internal circadian system is responsible for the ebb and flow of numerous biological rhythms. CR, in fact, extends to the cellular level. However, my experience shows that much, if not most, of the natural and artificial lighting applied today by architects, lighting designers and other building professionals is antithetical to the human evolutionary journey. The very engineering of man-made luminaires for indoors and out, on any building or structure worldwide, can now quite easily be attuned to light’s effect on our collective human biology. It can, and should, provide stable, wholesome-quality, even longer-lasting illumination that materially improves the well-being of individuals who routinely occupy these spaces. Our human evolutionary ancestors, for the most part, were born and, if allowed to grow, did so under skies that had approximately equally long hours of daylight and darkness. Under such conditions, human CR developed. Today, this internal human CR is commonly geared to light and dark cycles. Most people everywhere are awake and active during their days, sleeping and restoring themselves at night. The hypothalamus part of the brain works in tune with these cycles, to turn on or off hormone production; either stimulating activity or calming us for rest. Through millions of years of evolution, human bodily rhythms have been beating to the cycles of the sun on the earth. Associated with the hypothalamus is something called the Pineal Gland. It is responsible for the production of melatonin, the “sleep” hormone. Around 8 p.m., melatonin production increases, peaking around 3 a.m., then begins to dissipate. As a result, humans tend to become drowsy, fall asleep if conditions allow, then awake if they follow these circadian rhythms.

12

ARCHITECTURAL PRODUCTS

1612APONS.indd 12

Exposing the retina to the higher intensities of white light, or to the lower intensities of shorternanometer light spectra inhibits production of melatonin. Light enters retinas, triggers photosensitive “Ganglion cells,” sending signals to that Pineal gland, which in turn, slows production of melatonin. One can assume that this process directly correlates to human evolution under natural lighting conditions. Melatonin decreased as the sun rose during human evolution. Cortisol, the “awake” hormone, eventually became our predominant influence, making us alert and ready for long days of activity. Our CR, however, is no longer dependent upon naturally occurring changes in light. So, where does light’s effects on human hormonal flows lead us? We have been living in increasingly artificial lighting conditions for more than 100 years. Those of us who design or otherwise create man-made artificial light sources and applications can ask, “Has deprivation of only natural lighting conditions negatively affected our well-being?” For instance, use of bluelight emitting devices such as laptop/desktop computers, tablets and smart phones before bedtime, interfere with healthier sleep patterns because such devices inhibit melatonin production. Can other uses or forms of light help improve our well-being; bring us closer to natural conditions we could have encountered in prior decades? It was discovered in 1984 that higher intensities of more natural white light relieve symptoms of Seasonal Affective Disorder. “SAD” is a debilitating syndrome found among about 20% of populations, in latitudes with long periods of dreary weather and shorter daytime hours in winters. Exposing SAD patients to 5000 lux for 30 to 60 minutes relieves debilitative symptoms. We can see the same results from lower intensities of exposure to blue light. Can we engineer lighting to improve life conditions, cognizant of the evolutionary effect light has had and is having on us? Numerous studies are supplying evidence that we can. For example, jetlag is a result of phase-shifting of our CR—our body doesn’t know what time it is. Exposure of retinas to 500 lux of white light for a duration of merely one hour, “resets” a body clock. To this point, Airbus Industries has launched a carbon-fibre airliner designed to reduce effects of jet-lag, in which LED lighting is a major contributor. Alzheimer’s patients, who have lost their natural sleep cycle when exposed to high intensities of light between 9 and 11 a.m., begin to regain natural sleeping cycles. ICU patients recover on average three days sooner when hospitalized in rooms with a window.

THE PLANCK TELESCOPE A microwave mapping of the Universe as it existed 380,000 years after the Big Bang, which occurred some 3.9 billion years ago. The image was developed by the European Space Agency Planck Telescope. It reveals the Universe at that time was comprised of protons and electrons which combined releasing photons. So at the very beginning, the Universe was of Light. We are of the Universe. We are of Light.

OLDUVAI GORGE, TANZANIA Olduvai Gorge in Tanzania has fossils of early humans dating back 1.9 million years. Humans evolved here, where there is always 12 hours of sunlight and 12 hours of darkness. This is where our Body Clock was set.

AIRBUS A350 INTERIOR The interior of the new Airbus A350 has been designed to ameliorate effects of jet lag through numerous devices especially lighting.

Europe seems to be way ahead of the U.S. in adopting Circadian lighting strategies. Lighting Europe, a European Lighting Industry Assn., in fact, predicts that human centric lighting will be a 1.4 billion euro industry in just a few years. We are all beings who use light. Knowledge of how light affects our bodily CR, coinciding with the advent of LED light color tuning, humans who engage in creating ever-advancing lighting design solutions and applications are poised to create lighting that tangibly improves peoples’ health and well-being. We can do this while at the same time, lowering energy costs and saving our environment.

BEST PRACTICES IN COMMERCIAL LIGHTING ›› LEDS AND CONTROLS

Beyond Energy Savings to Optimal Building Performance In just the last few years, LEDs have completely transformed the commercial lighting landscape. Estimates put the 2016 US LED market at 30.5 billion with a 36% penetration rate. At 20%-30% more efficient than many fluorescent lamps, it might be tempting to install LEDs as an energy-savings measure, and forget to think about the other significant benefits—code compliance, and operational effi ciencies, and human-centric spaces—that can be realized by layering control strategies and embracing new technologies in your projects.

Higher Energy Savings One of the most obvious benefits of an LED retrofit is energy savings, and even that story just gets better when you add controls. Layering control solutions into an energy retrofit not only increases energy savings, it also makes it easier to maintain these efficiencies over the life of the building. While LED retrofits alone generally reduce lighting energy use by 30%, layered lighting control strategies—from daylight harvesting, to personal control, to high-end tuning—can contribute another 40% energy savings, and still deliver simple payback of less than 2.5 years. Combine on-going savings with long LED product life, and fixture/control retrofits have tremendous economic benefit.

Creative, Comfortable, Engaging Spaces New technologies, such as color-tuning, are making LED installations more flexible than other light sources. As your clients get more familiar with the benefits LEDs offer, they also have higher expectations for light quality and performance, and a strong desire to recreate the kind of dimming performance they were used to with incandescent lighting. For example, a technique such as dim-to-warm tuning mimics the familiar ‘warm” light associated with incandescent sources, allowing LEDs to be used in applications and areas where people prefer a familiar, calming glow. Today, control and lamp manufacturers are offering solutions that work together to deliver highquality dimming and superior performance. The result is engaging, energy-efficient environments, perfectly suited to individual occupant preference or specific tasks.

Improved Operational Efficiency Intuitive new apps and Graphical User Interfaces (GUIs) can turn your smart device into a de facto command center that helps unlock the lighting control system’s full potential.

12 . 2016

1612APONS.indd 13

Beyond the basic advantages of LED lighting, automated control systems can manage lights, shades, and temperature in response to pre-defined building settings, scenes, time clocks, or userdefined events. Collected data can help facilities teams see when and where a building is using most of its electricity, and control settings can be easily adjusted to optimize building performance. With the right control system, building managers can be connected to the entire system from anywhere in the building, or even anywhere in the world, improving building efficiency and quickly responding to occupant requests. Apps also enable fine adjustments to automated control settings to help achieve optimized energy reductions, meet and exceed energy codes

predict energy savings, the more likely they are to embrace control solutions. The same sensors can then be added to the entire system as it is installed and programmed.

Controls Make Better Buildings New lighting technologies, advanced control systems, and creative applications of both make buildings more energy-efficient, comfortable, and productive. That’s good news for building owners as well as for the professionals who design, build, and manage these spaces. It’s even better news for the people who get to work in a more humancentric, sustainable environment.

and mandates including net zero and near net zero goals, and help achieve requirements for certifications such as LEED and the new WELL building standard.

Simple Installation and Adjustments Wireless control solutions offer lower installation costs, less disruption, and a much greater ability to fine tune control settings. Almost any new lighting control system includes occupancy sensors, and many also include daylight sensors that automatically adjust electric light in response to daylight. Especially in retrofits, wireless systems make it easier to adjust placement and setup of these controls, but it can still be challenging to make sure they’re in the ideal location for achieving energy-saving goals and taking full advantage of available daylight. Sensor performance, and ultimately lighting system performance, can be affected by bookshelves, shades, partitions, or a variety of other things that often change once the building is fully occupied. Unlike their wired counterparts, wireless controls can be easily relocated and reprogrammed without rewiring, tearing out walls, or further disrupting the workspace. How important is proper installation and setup? In a typical open-office space where occupancy and daylight sensors, along with automated dimming controls, work together to reduce lighting levels throughout a typical workday, those controls help reduce lighting electricity use by 44%. Wireless sensors and controls can also be effectively utilized prior to system installation to log data that will help accurately predict the lighting control system’s energy performance. For many building owners, the more accurately they can

WELL-BEING LIGHTING The American Society of Interior Designers (ASID) opted to be one of the District’s first WELL Building certifications. Design aspects of biophilia are used throughout including for select light fixtures to mimic patterns found in nature similar to how sunlight is scattered through tree leaves. In addition, the office included a sophisticated lighting strategy that eliminates eye strain and other negative ergonomic impacts from glare, including automatic daylight harvesting, automatic shade control and occupancy/vacancy sensors.

Keeping You in the Loop: 2030 Outlook In preparing for this final issue of the year, we reviewed trends that emerged in 2016 from color to technology. And, as the Pratt Institute concluded in its recent Design Symposium that a designer’s imagination is the “bank” from which to draw new ideas, we agree design is the ”new currency.” Following are Senior Editor Megan Mazzocco’s picks for the best ideas of 2016 that represent the precipice of design, technology, planning and construction for 2017 and beyond.

The Architecture Billings Index (ABI) for September was 48.4, down from the mark of 49.7 in the previous month. The new projects inquiry index was 59.4, down from a reading of 61.8 the previous month. AIA has produced a report assessing the work of firms that are part of the AIA 2030 Commitment. The USGBC’s new online, data-based system, called ARC, aims to streamline the application and certification process across their expanded portfolio of 10 rating systems. In partnership with Delos, HOK will expand the global reach of the WELL Building Standard. Perkins+Will is pursuing Fitwel certification for all of its North American offices. Fitwel is a new evidencebased design standard for workplace design and policies developed by GSA and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

This year, Chicago opened its Riverwalk, a project championed by architect Carol Ross Barney, a Metropolitan Planning Council board member. Part of the vision for the Great Rivers Chicago project, the plan calls for the reclamation and reuse of 150 miles of riverfront. The organization hopes the project and plan as a whole, will serve as a model for other water-linked cities, as the health of waterways is essential to a city’s prosperity, as such entities link people to each other and to other major bodies of water. At the New York Times’ Cities for Tomorrow Conference, invited guest and Chicago architect Jeanne Gang spoke to this issue, citing the establishment of boat houses—one of which she recently designed to critical acclaim (below)—as a means to encourage everything from recreation to racing. This is important, as the latter’s enthusiasts have given the patronage necessary to remediate the formerly polluted river, and protect it for the foreseeable future. Seattle is also rediscovering its waterfront as it recently announced James Corner Field Operations’ plans for reclaiming and revitalizing 1.5 miles of the Central Waterfront.

Adaptive Reuse Big box blights, offices and tall towers in urban hubs are being preserved and made over into efficient or net-zero ready places to live. The reuse movement is happening across the country. In Seattle, architect Susan Jones, orchestrated a partial demolition of a 1980s office building to create a new home for the First Congregational Church of Seattle’s growing congregation. In Baltimore, sports clothing retailer Under Armour’s new facility is contained in a former Big-Box store reimagined as a corporate campus with the help of Bohlin Cywinski Jackson. In Chicago, the former New York Life Insurance Building was rescued from demolition thanks to the efforts of Kimpton Hotels, who, as part of their effort to preserve historical structures reopened the building as the luxurious “The Gray.” In the case of the latter, it’s just more proof of a successful business model born from founder Bill Kimpton’s love of old buildings—not the hotel industry. “That is in our DNA of doing adaptive re-use, taking buildings that weren’t necessarily supposed to be hotels and converting them,” says Ron Vlasic, Regional Sr. VP. Gensler and Kimpton worked closely with Mayor Rahm Emanuel’s retrofit team, a city of Chicago entity directly aiding design and construction teams embarking on energy-efficient retrofits. The mayor’s office touts the project as an historic building that’s now just as efficient as a brand new building. The trend is growing: in San Diego next year, the last part of a military barracks will be renovated into the Barracks Hotel as part of Liberty Station mixeduse development and public market.

ENERGY EFFICIENCY: PASSIVE, NET-ZERO + LIVING BUILDINGS

A Trickle of Living Buildings Could Become a Waterfall As projects aspire to meet the requirements of the Living Building Challenge and net zero, it necessitates a new model for publicly funded projects. The ‘new normal’ must examine net-zero and passive technologies as a 5- to 10-year system investment, rather than simply a cost liability associated with the purchase individual products and construction materials.

ditioning. “We couldn’t pick every sustainable technology, because if you’re not proving ROI, it’s not sustainable or valuable,” says Aumer. Modeling both energy performance and savings over time illustrates a technology’s true value, in system context, allowing a different take on budgeting as the owner takes a longer-term investment to gauge its return-on-investment. Elsewhere, the Hotel at Oberlin (pictured above) is a rare glimpse into net-zero hospitality. What was once thought to be impossible and then improbable has come to fruition near the Oberlin College campus in Ohio, as the project seeks LEED platinum certification.

The New Buildings Institute reports 53 verified net zero buildings and nearly 300 others in the “emerging” state. One of those projects is Pittsburgh’s Frick Environmental Center which truly demonstrates smart sustainability. The project, orchestrated for the city by Bohlin Cywinski Jackson, proves that net-zero can be achieved within a reasonable budget. The team had to model every technology it considered from an energy and a monetary standpoint recalls Rob Aumer, the project’s architect. If the energy savings or the monetary savings didn’t pan out, it was eliminated from the project—for instance, radiant floor heating and the Earth Tube passive air con-

HEALTH AND WELLNESS: DESIGN STANDARDS

Living Products and Spaces Nature is a healer and provider of human health and well being and it continues to be harnessed, where sensory immersion in nature is viewed as an essential part of treatment.

As universal healthcare came into focus at a governmental level, so did the collective health of citizens. Starting with New York City’s Active Design guidelines for public spaces and municipal buildings, initiatives to ensure collective health and well-being have snowballed. Organizations like the International of Interior Design Assn. (IIDA) are cutting their teeth on the new WELL Building Standard; Perkins+Will has committed to testing

The implications of nature as teacher, healer and provider of human health and well being continues to be harnessed by hospitals, eduction and hospitality settings. the new Fitwel design standard jointly released this fall by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and GSA (General Services Administration). The new guideline for offices aims to help businesses evaluate factors associated with promoting a culture for healthy workplace and employees. Along similar lines, the American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA) released a body of research about tangible health benefits of nature (www.asla.org/healthbenefitsofnature.aspx). The implications of nature as teacher, healer and provider of human health and well being continues to be harnessed by hospitals and education and even hospitality settings, where sensory immersion in nature is viewed as an essential part of the treatment. For example, Hacienda on the River is a longterm memory care and rehab campus integrated into a working horse ranch in Arizona. Similarly, in Winchester, Va. a local cancer treatment center includes a healing garden for patients and their families to find respite and recovery. The New York Botanical Garden and Cooper Robertson have put a twist on the trend, having just broken ground on the Edible Academy complex, which includes a teaching garden as part of its operation. It is scheduled to open in 2018.

More profitable airlines, increased competition, growing air traffic, and the need to update aging facilities is spurring improved terminal designs. By Barbara Horwitz-Bennett, contributing writer

Driven by airline profitability, increased passenger traffic, as well as growing passenger expectation for comfort and convenience and a need to update aging facilities, the industry is seeing an uptick in renovations and capacity enhancement at airline hubs. In fact, the International Air Transport Assn. posted a 6.5% increase in airline travel from 2014 to 2015, which is well above the industry’s 10-year average annual growth rate of 5.5%. “Currently, the growth in demand coincides with unprecedented profitability by U.S. airlines which facilitates program approval,” says Lee Glenn, AIA, associate principal, director of aviation design HKS, San Francisco. “Airlines are also increasingly focusing on increased passenger service and facilities upgrades as a means for them to differentiate in the market.” Offering some historical perspective, Jonathan Massey, AIA, LEED AP, principal, aviation sector leader, Corgan, Dallas, recalls the turmoil that ensued

in the aftermath of Sept. 11, 2001: a drop in passenger traffic, rising fuel costs, multiple bankruptcies and mergers that went on for several years. Now that the industry is financially back on track, the time has come to address neglected infrastructure improvements. Coinciding with these upgrades are services and spaces focused on comfort and enhanced passenger experience, including hospitality-like designs, high-end finishes, amenities and concessions. “This is manifested in multiple ways including architectural expression, curated concessions programs, locavore food offerings, regional connectivity, integrated landscape programs and integrated art programs,” reports Glenn. Beyond this “drive to create a unique and elevated passenger experience,” Massey says energy reduction and sustainability—as well as the search for maximum flexibility in layout and processing capacity—are the leading trends in terminal design. In order to enable this, Yvonne Bilshausen, national aviation program management director, Burns & McDonnell, Chicago, identifies special IT systems as the key to enhancing the passenger experience by making it easier to make mobile payments, adding more intelligent wayfinding, increasing self-service options, and enabling a passengers’ ability to customize, document and instantly share their experiences.

Self Check-In Perhaps one of the most noted changes to terminal design is the proliferation of self check-in. “The introduction and everincreasing use of self-service options— including those used in the processes of ticketing, check-in, bag drop, security and boarding— has led to nothing short of a revolution in the design and use of the associated spaces,” says Bilshausen. With traditional checkin desks quickly becoming obsolete, airlines are replacing these spaces with streamlined self-service kiosks and intuitive bag drop equipment. Consequently, this is opening up valuable floor space to support improved passenger orientation and flow, to reduce congestion, thereby creating a “fleeting and fluid perceived experience,” according to Bilshausen. Enabling designers to rethink the way agents interact with and serve passengers, some models are spreading the kiosks out into the passenger-processing hall. “In this scenario, many airline agents are not placed behind a counter, but rather roam to assist passengers,” explains Jordan Taylor, AIA, LEED AP, vice president and market sector leader for aviation, Leo Daly, Washington, D.C. “Kiosk-based check-in procedures create a completely different

28

ARCHITECTURAL PRODUCTS

1612APMOC3.indd 28

spatial experience than the typical linear ticketing counter/back wall prototype,” adds Glenn. “Replacing a definitive, horizontal and vertical barrier that visually separates the ticket area from the remainder of the terminal, a kioskbased approach allows visual connectivity and fosters a sense of progression and movement through the ticket hall to the remainder of the terminal.” At the same time, Kricket Snow, senior project manager, Perkins+Will, Miami, notes that while remote check in sends many travelers straight to the security checkpoints, open spaces in ticketing lobbies must still accommodate large queues of passengers during peak travel times for baggage check-in. And while the need for airline staff has decreased in these locations, human interaction is still required to support a less stressful passenger experience.

Flexibility and More Flexibility Of course, the security checkpoints are a major aspect of airport design, and while technology has succeeded in decreasing airportrelated equipment over time, this has not been the case with security equipment. In addition to large screening equipment, passenger throughput is a slow, belabored process, requiring more staff and space. To best support this challenging, everchanging situation, a flexible electrical infrastructure is key, along with clear-span designs to provide the maximum amount of usable space, and lanes configured to easily accommodate future traffic growth, recommends Wilson Rayfield, AIA, NCARB, LEED AP, executive vice president, Gresham Smith and Partners, Richmond, Va.

RELEVANT NUMBERS The International Air Transport Assn. posted a 6.5% increase in airline travel from 2014 to 2015, which is well above the industry’s 10-year average annual growth rate of 5.5%.

^6.5% Perhaps one of the most noted changes to terminal design is the proliferation of self check-in. “The introduction and ever-increasing use of self-service options—including those used in the processes of ticketing, check-in, bag drop, security and boarding—has led to nothing short of a revolution in the design and use of the associated spaces.” —Yvonne Bilshausen, Burns & McDonnell

12 . 2016

1612APMOC3.indd 29

Along these lines, Taylor advises incorporating soft spaces—such as offices and storage areas, as opposed to restrooms and mechanical rooms—that can be easily configured to accommodate future expansion. Adding to this list of best practices, Derek Moore, AIA, PhD., Director, SOM, New York City, suggests the inclusion of column-free spacing, accessible flooring to receive new equipment power and data cabling, and gantries for overhead ceiling systems to support multiple security cameras, special

lighting, speakers, etc. “The ceiling should not be too high, but high enough to give passengers a sense of space and views through to the other side,” says Moore. Initiatives such as innovation lanes, centralized image processing, passenger security scanners and advanced cabin baggage screening systems, notes Bilshausen, provide numerous opportunities to improve both the security process and passenger experience. More than at any other point in the passenger journey, security is an inevitable bottleneck, compressing passengers, so anything that can be done to make travelers more comfortable is encouraged. For example, HKS often explores design solutions such as comfortable seating, more intimate lighting levels and integrated art to create a more relaxing setting. “In addition, the necessity of allowing a passenger time and space to regroup and reorient after passing through security has made the post-security, recompose zone an area of particular focus,” adds Moore. In terms of building in overall design flexibility to optimally achieve this, open-minded and collaborative thinking among the aviation architects, engineers, specialty designers and constructors who

fully understand the unique needs of airports and airlines, their many business partners the expectations of the 21st-century commercial air passenger, is essential says Bilshausen. This begins with a well thought out IT infrastructure, incorporated into the physical design from the very early stages of development. Endorsing some specific design solutions, Glenn favors the development of domestic/ international capable swing gates, unitized plug-and-play cladding modules and blended hold-room/concessions concepts independent of fixed-core elements. Regarding the former, Taylor explains, “common-use equipment allows any airline to use a gate and this can provide greater utilization of the airports most important asset— aircraft gates.” To best enable these swing gates, Snow recommends open concession spaces in or between gate lounges, along with large volume spaces to allow for flexibility in enplaning and deplaning on two levels. She adds that smart information systems planning is critical to support evergrowing technology demands amongst airport operators, tenants and passengers.

Social Media One interesting aspect of airport terminal design in 2016 is the proliferation of digital devices and social media. “There is a blog for everything, there is a ‘number one’ for everything and all of this information is instant and real time,” reports Snow. Because this information is so transparent and accessible, it makes a significant impact on passenger perceptions of airports and terminals. Consequently, the level of service is critical and this is directly attributed to design.

“The instantaneous messaging of passengers’ likes and dislikes, surprise and delight, as well as frustration and stress has had a tremendous impact on how airports are designed and operated,” says Bilshausen. “It’s taken the guesswork out of wondering if an airport’s initiative is well received, and allows airports and airlines to respond to passengers’ experiences and observations in real time.”

Defining a few elements of good design, which directly contribute to the experiences travelers are sharing on social media, Snow lists providing comfortable spaces for queues and circulation, convenient access to services and concessions, naturally lit spaces, airfield views, inherent wayfinding and easily maintainable facilities. Some airports are also making an effort to create attractive backdrops where

passengers can take and share photos on social media. Similarly, digital services are essential. For example, travelers are accessing mobile boarding passes, airport wayfinding and airline apps which quickly disseminate information about gate changes and status. Even more sophisticated, vendors are starting to tap realtime information about a customer’s location within a terminal to send personalized sale offers.

Taken together, this constantly increasing demand for digital services is generating the need for a tremendous amount of bandwidth to support large volumes of data. The upshot is that IT is significantly compressed for space in serving as the conduit for every process within the airport.

Food and Retail As passengers scroll through their phones to locate a specific food outlet or retail shop, terminals are ensuring that these spaces are well designed and aesthetically appealing.

agrees Rayfield. “Some airports even offer services that let passengers order food with their smart phones and have it delivered to them anywhere in the airport.”

“Lighting, spatial volume, visibility, seating types and density all play a critical role here,” says Snow.

Other trends include showcasing more local cuisine and retail offerings to highlight the airport’s geographic region and increasing numbers of shopping kiosks, bars and restaurant-type seating within hold rooms, making these services accessible to passengers with limited time. Whereas concessions

“Open, light and airy designs that are userfriendly and incorporate local or regional colors and materials all help make these spaces more comfortable and appealing,”

and waiting areas used to be separate, the blending of these spaces has created a new design model of seating types to accommodate passengers who are simply waiting, working on mobile devices and/or eating/drinking.

In terms of building in overall design flexibility to optimally achieve goals, open-minded and collaborative thinking among designers is essential.

“Of course, probably the single highest demand is for maximum access to power and high speed Wi-Fi at every location, whether gate lounges, concessions or premium lounges,” adds Snow.

Sustainable Design Because they consume vast energy, water and material resources, airport facilities have significant opportunities to reduce their environmental profiles. Focusing on things like natural daylight, lowflow and sensor operated fixtures in restrooms, VOC-free materials, and reflective roof coatings, GS&P recently incorporated all of these measures in the LEED-Gold certified Maynard H. Jackson International Terminal in Atlanta.

A 222,964-gallon cistern also captures and filters water runoff from the terminal roof and the parking structure, and skylights, clerestories and other daylighting strategies bring natural light to belowgrade interior spaces. “Recent sustainability innovations by Corgan for airports include groundwater capture systems used for toilet flushing, intelligent glazing systems which automatically dim themselves in high light and glare conditions and the design of building components such as exterior enclosures,

CHANGI TERMINAL 3, SINGAPORE

which use less material to achieve the same effect,” reports Massey. Taking advantage of airports’ vast roofs, many facilities are capitalizing on daylight autonomy opportunities. Case in point is Singapore’s Changi International Airport Terminal 3, where SOM designed an extensive array of operable louvers that modulate incoming daylight and lend an attractive aesthetic. Opening and closing based upon cloud cover levels, the louvers are programmed to bring more light into landscaped

areas and circulation and retail areas where changing patterns on the floor and walls animate the space. One challenging area for airports is dealing with stormwater management due to the extensive volume of airside and landside paving, and fueling and de-icing agents going into the stormwater. To help address this, Burns & McDonnell designed a treatment train of bioswales and lakes to treat the water until it could enter the stormwater system at Kansas City International Airport.

Capitalizing on daylight autonomy, SOM designed an extensive series of aesthetic louvers, both above and below the roof of Changi Terminal 3. Controlled by a computerized system that measures incoming daylight, the motorized louvers adjust based upon sun and cloud conditions.

GEORGE BUSH INTERCONTINENTAL AIRPORT, HOUSTON Collecting data from a rooftop scan of a terminal at George Bush Intercontinental Airport in Houston, a Burns & McDonnell retrocommissioning initiative helped to reveal water leaks, pinpoint insulation needs and identify other conditions affecting energy use and ongoing operations. A handheld scanner records the temperature of a steam line in an equipment room at George Bush Intercontinental Airport as part of a retrocommissioning program that delivered an impressive 1-year payback.

Onward, Upwards As airports continue to actively tap designer’s expertise in producing beautiful architecture that is both energy effi cient and highly functional, the industry can anticipate increased project growth. In fact, the Federal Aviation Administration forecasts that aircraft operations will grow at an average annual rate of 0.9% over the next 20 years.

In terms of what this means for design, Bilshausen sums it up as follows, “when the principles of aviation architecture—including thoughtful development and three-dimensional design, the optimal use of natural daylight, and the creating of a sense of place and unique identity—are employed, the end users and key stakeholders are all beneficiaries.” £

HIGH-FLYING METAL At San Francisco International Airport, a first-of-its-kind traffic control tower, conceived by HNTB and Fentress Architects, is clad in more than 4000-sq. ft. of four-sided, silicone-glazed curtainwall. The “cab” at the top features a cantilevered roof and windows to give controllers an unobstructed view. The façade consists of curved metal panels and a vertical glass band that is illuminated to colorfully glow at night. Products included in the facade are the SuperWall 8250 Series curtainwall, INvision 7250-UW Series unitized curtainwall and 7250 Series BHM curtainwall, plus INvent 3250i Series in-swing casement thermal windows. IT JUST MAKES SENSE HVLS fans provide cost-saving comfort to the Valencia Airport During summer months—in fact, the use of fans has resulted in a cooling effect for passengers of between 4 and 5 degrees. This allows the airport to increase the temperature of its HVAC system, which has resulted in significant energy cost savings. During winter, the warm air delivered by the HVAC system tends to rise, creating a temperature difference of more than 5 degrees between the upper and lower floors of the terminal. By installing and operating MacroAir fans, the result is homogenized air and a constant temperature throughout the terminal. And this has generated a 40% savings in energy cost. In Tune With Nature This year’s leading product inquiries indicate an ongoing desire to balance life forces with the built environment. The hgh-tech luminaire at the right is one of several LED products that piqued reader interest this past year. Beyond energy efficiency, human health and productivity—possibly enhanced with tunable LED and controls—is on the minds of many readers, as noted in this issue’s On Spec (p. 12). Human-centric lighting (HLC), as it’s known, gained more mainstream attention earlier this year when

The collective consciousness of the profession has evolved to embrace products that let life force into its best building designs. the American Medical Assn. weighed in on issues associated with lighting that may disrupt Circadian rhythms, a condition that can increase risk of certain cancers. The antidote? The jury remains out on artificial lighting’s role in the process—positive or negative—but what is a certainty is that plenty of natural light helps. The good news is in the following pages, as selected by our readers, are a smattering of doors, partitions and moveable walls that facilitate such goals. Part of the HLC mantra is also to provide views to the outside. The scene through the glass doors opposite this page, however, reminds me of another important element—water. On one hand, reader inquiries reflect a need for products that manage or tame soggy climates to better preserve the built environment. On the other hand, the popularity of permeable pavers, porous pave and bricks, indicate that people like to build in, on and around water. Finally, let’s not forget air, specifically IAQ. Readers inquired about fans, largescale ventilated windows and even green walls that mitigate the detrimental effects of too much time spent indoors.

Everyone enjoys a green wall, but some seriously consider them to function as air filters in passive HVAC applications. “Not only did plants included on these walls cleanse the air… they humidified it, as well,” says Birgit Siber, B. Arch OAA RAIC LEED AP, a Principal at Diamond Schmitt Architects of Toronto of an installation of a Nedlaw living wall at the University of Ottawa. Note it is actually the microbes growing in association with the plants on their roots, the surrounding media and the water that are actually cleaning the air. “When dirty air drawn through the space comes in contact with the growing root media, contaminants move into the water phase where they are broken down by the root microbes,” explains inventor, Dr. Alan Darlington. He stresses that the air supplied by a living wall is clean, humidified and conditioned, making it possible to significantly reduce the number of outside air exchanges. Circle 408

Function

Converging Architectural + Performance Goals

Greg Mella uses a “whole building” systems-oriented approach that examines how to integrate architecture with the mechanical, electrical and plumbing systems to maximize shared benefits.

Brock Environmental Center Virginia Beach, Va.

64

The 10,520-sq.-ft. Brock Environmental Center serves as the hub for the Chesapeake Bay Foundation’s (CBF) Hampton Road office and supports their education and advocacy initiatives. The center provides meeting rooms and a conference room designed to express CBF’s mission to protect one of the nation’s most threatened natural resources— the Chesapeake Bay.

produced 83% more power than it has consumed, solidifying it as a net-positive building. It is the first commercial building in the U.S. to receive a permit to capture rainwater and treat it onsite to meet the federal drinking water quality standards. The building also incorporates such deep green features as residential wind turbines, geothermal wells, composting toilets and passive solar.

Completed in Nov. 2014, the LEED Platinum Brock Environmental Center has

“The Chesapeake Bay Foundation views its environmental centers as more than shelters

to house staff and host educators. They understand that their centers themselves can be teaching tools showcasing the important technologies that are a critical part to regenerating the Chesapeake Bay watershed’s oncethriving ecosystems,” says Greg Mella, FAIA, LEED AP BD+C, director of sustainable design at SmithGroupJJR. More than 30,000 people have come to the facility since it opened. Visitors learn about water harvesting, and when they see

the “waterworks”—a 20-sq.-ft. closet with a glass door allowing visitors to see the filtration equipment that turns rain into potable water— they are less intimidated by the regulations that govern waterworks, which can seem inaccessible or prohibitive to smaller building owners. Moreover, “Being the first commercial building in the mainland U.S. to receive a permit to drink rainwater treated to federal standards, breaks down a major barrier, paving the way for other facilities to follow,” says Mella.

The center has received a Living Building Challenge (LBC) certification to recognize its adherence to one of the toughest and most prestigious building standards in the world. “We published a list of every material that went into the Brock Center, so that other teams working on LBC projects might benefit from and build upon our research,” says Mella Administered by the International Living Future Institute, certified buildings must have “net zero” impact on the surrounding

land, air and water and meet strict criteria for complete water and energy independence, location, health, materials, equity and beauty. LBC certification also requires a year of successful post-occupancy performance. “When we envisioned the center, we intended to demonstrate the built environment can actually give back to the natural environment rather than harm it,” says director Christy Everett. “We hope it can be an international model for sustainability for years to come.”

12 . 2016

Resiliency Situated on a coastal site to facilitate the client’s outdoor education program, the Brock Center’s design anticipated the onset of sea-level rise and hurricanes: the building is set back 200 ft. from the shore and sits on pylons 14 ft. above sea level. Even the building’s structural steel system was designed to be capable of resisting 120-mph hurricane force winds. SmithGroupJJR designed the building to use very little energy by incorporating a series of aggressive, energysaving features such as natural ventilation, daylighting, efficient geothermal heating and cooling, and a highly insulated exterior envelope.

COMPOSTING ROOFING Two standing seam metal roofs, with zinc shingles from Jarden Zinc Products, capture rainwater.

METAL PANELS Jarden Zinc Products www.jardenzinc.com Circle 355

Water Harvesting In 2015, the center became the first commercial building in the continental U.S. to be permitted to treat, to federal standards, harvested rainwater for potable uses. The center collects rainwater from its roof and then stores it in tanks located below the elevated first floor. Two standing seam metal roofs, with zinc shingles from Jarden Zinc Products, capture rainwater, filling two 1,650-gallon cisterns, enough to withstand 5-6 weeks of drought. A filtration system filters the water for drinking as well as handwashing. Graywater from sinks and showers is piped to a rainwater rain garden—raised above sea level—that treats the water. “We are just ‘borrowing’ rainwater—for handwashing and showers—before returning it to the aquifer that ecologically was meant to receive it,” says Mella.

WIND Two small, 10-watt Bergey wind power wind turbines provide 40% energy.

SOLAR 168 SolarWorld 38kW rooftop PV panels produce 60% energy.

In addition to rainwater harvesting, Clivus Multrum composting toilets reduce water demand while also treating waste on-site. Solid compost is used on-site, while leachate is stored and sent to a local struvite reactor and converted into commercially available fertilizer. Brock’s composting toilets were carefully designed— bathrooms are negatively pressured with exhaust going through the actual toilet to prevent smells from the composter below from entering the bathroom. “Said simply, they don’t smell or look or feel differently from conventional toilets. And the maintenance is not nearly extensive as people often think,” says Mella.

Renewable Energy

The center generates its own electricity via solar and wind-power, and the past year produced 83% more energy than it used. South-facing rooftop PV panels produce 60% of the building’s energy needs. Two small wind turbines—70 ft. tall—contribute to the remaining 40%. Electric bills are $17 each month—the minimum fee to tie into the grid—with excess energy going back to the utility; the center will receive its first rebate check in Nov. 2016.

Open Air A custom-designed operable wall in the conference room connects the south deck. When opened, the glass wall doubles the capacity of the indoor conference room. The glass wall also provides opportunity for abundant daylighting and increased ventilation. The “dogtrot” pictured below uses the building to form to intensify breezes creating a comfortable micro-climate, while also promoting airflow throughout the center to reduce horizontal stratification.

The building relies on nighttime flushing, whereby warmer temps are flushed out of the building through open windows during evening hours, expanding the following day’s natural ventilation approximately four to five hours.

Fan Base

Designers from SmithGroupJJR recommended eight fans from Big Ass Solutions to complement natural ventilation and provide cooling airflow. The fans greatly reduce the need for air conditioning and uniformly distribute air throughout the space.

NATURAL VENTILATION The interiors are open and loft-like, with 20-ft. ceilings at their peak, promoting daylighting and both stack and cross ventilation. Natural ventilation through the space can be from either direction and function in a cross flow or stack configuration to provide full operator flexibility. Airflow modeling predicted the building can effectively maintain comfort using only natural ventilation for 11% of the year but Mella suggests that number is higher, nearing 13-15%. When sensors determine climate suitability, mechanical cooling shuts down and the building management system alerts building staff to open windows, using a combination of hand-cranked and motorized operators.

While natural ventilation played an important role in the design of the center, 18 vertical geothermal wells support the building’s mechanical heating, cooling and ventilation rejection needs harnessing the earth’s stable temps. The ventilation air is decoupled from space conditioning and supplied directly to the spaces by a single AAON 1,400 CFM DOAS. A water-cooled Daikin VRF system projects to have a 5% reduction in energy over a watersource heat pump system, and improved flexibility and acoustics given the open office design.

Daylighting The Brock Center’s one-story, long and narrow footprint oriented on an east-west axis maximizes opportunities for daylighting. The exterior envelope was optimized—R-31 walls, R-50 galvalume roof and Intus tripleglazed windows using Guardian SunGuard glass provide an overall assembly thermal performance of R-7—to reduce heating demand. To minimize cooling loads, windows were placed and frugally sized—25% window-towall ratio—to provide optimal daylight, views and ventilation, without excessive heat gain from over-glazing.

WINTER SUN

The center benefits from an abundance of daylighting due to site orientation, and windows and clerestories.

DAYLIGHTING The south-facing porch provides a buffer for direct sunlight while northfacing windows and clerestories provide diffuse daylighting to office spaces. During design, simulation tools ensured that window glazing, configuration, size and location optimized daylight, views and ventilation without creating glare or unwanted solar gain.

Graphic: Courtesy of SmithGroupJJR

“The Brock Center’s performance pushed the boundaries on what is possible. Regenerative, netpositive design is more than an aspiration, it has been achieved.”

LIGHTING Minimal artificial lighting is used at the center. In fact, the building used 97% less lighting compared to a typical building. Artificial lighting layouts parallel furniture, providing efficient lighting at work surfaces without over lighting corridors. LED task lighting is provided at all workstations. The building is so well daylit, late afternoon winter days—when sunlight is at a minimum—provide the only real “challenge” for lighting. “Interestingly, we used simulation software to prevent over-illumination,” says Mella.

Medical Facility Gets Site Specific Design San Antonio surgical center and its design team worked to create a building that responded to the site, including the environmental impacts of wind and rain.

INFLUENCE: The design team wanted materials that reflected both rural central Texas and the hi-tech feel of the armed forces. The wall panels did exactly that and lent sustainable characteristics with the panels’ natural style and purpose. “The building is influenced by different perspectives, such as a high volumes of people coming to the facility,” says James Henry, design director for HDR’s Health Practice. “As the largest free-standing ambulatory facility in the DoD’s portfolio, there is no model to work from. So we looked at other areas, such as

70

retail and aviation, where there is a lot of people movement. At the same time we had to consider that all military bases have standards. We had to create a new medical architectural standard for the district while adhering to existing base standards.” SOLUTION: The project used 150,000 sq. ft. of 1.5mm zinc and 0.080-in. aluminum Dri-Design Panels. The zinc is VMZINC Quartz, a natural zinc treated to mimic a natural patina. The aluminum panels were painted in Bone White, Dark Bronze and Gauntlet Gray colors. Metal panels are used on the exterior as the cladding material and brise soleils. For the interior, the metal panels were added to seamlessly transition inside and outside spaces in the chapel, lobby, elevator entrance and entryway vestibules.

CHALLENGE: Wilford Hall Ambulatory Surgical Center at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland, Texas, is the largest outpatient ambulatory care center in the Department of Defense. The $380-million phased project brought a LEED Gold facility that spans 670,000 sq. ft. to Lackland Air Force Base. As part of the Wilford Hall replacement, the design team at HDR worked to design a building that responded to the site, including the environmental impacts of solar and wind.

Lighting

Innovative Teaming of Baseball and Transit Target Field, home of MLB’s Minnesota Twins, completed a lighting design, which provided a digital signature that extends to an illuminated underpass and lighted pathway where benches provide a soft glow.

CHALLENGE: Target Field Metro Transit Station in downtown Minneapolis represents a whole new concept in public transit. Located adjacent to Target Field—home to Major League Baseball’s Minnesota Twins—the open-air, 60-acre multi-modal transportation hub is becoming a communal backyard for the Twin Cities. This urban gathering space uniquely integrates commuter trains, a light rail station, bus service, and parking with green space, retailers, an amphitheater, and more. INFLUENCE: Perkins Eastman Architects’ vision for Target Field Station extended well beyond transit. The goal was an iconic destination for game-day activities, as well as year-round activities and events like movie nights, festivals and concerts.

The open-air, 60-acre multimodal transportation hub is becoming a communal backyard for the Twin Cities. At night, the lighting design provides “a visual signature” that extends to the illuminated underpass, says Paul Whitaker, senior lighting designer at the Minneapolis office of Schuler Shook. SOLUTION: The first hint of the unexpected occurs upon entering the space via an underpass. Overhead, the color-changing effects of iLight Hypnotica (RGB) fixtures provide a dynamic display, plus a preview of the sights—and vibe—to come.

Whitaker has already used iLight Plexineon LED fixtures many times before with great success. Elsewhere on the project, he mounted Plexineon White 2X 2800 fixtures under benches to provide a soft glow for adjacent walking surfaces. The glow gives the paths a soft, romantic feel—in contrast to the bold, direct view of Hypnotica. Hypnotica offered many important advantages. “We like that it’s so thin,” Whitaker says. “It’s very compact, while providing a lot of light.” Also, by day the fixtures nearly disappear into custom channels designed by Perkins Eastman. And, Hypnotica is limitlessly programmable. “It’s programmed in very small increments,” Whitaker says. “It’s amazing how many different possibilities there are. Even though the fixtures are laid out in an irregular pattern, we were able to get many different effects with them.”

Seam Panels

DC Metrorail Covers Its Tracks The multi-billion dollar, two-phase Dulles Corridor Metrorail Project relies on the installation of standing seam panels to highlight escalator vaults, rider pavilions, pedestrian bridges and canopies.

CHALLENGE: The Dulles Corridor Metrorail Project

is a 23-mile extension of Washington’s existing Metrorail System. Construction of Phase 1 is complete and covers 11.7 miles with five stations. Phase 2 is underway and will complete the extension with six additional stations. Upon completion, the line will provide a one-seat, no-transfer ride from Dulles Airport to downtown Washington, D.C. creating a long-sought connectivity between the burgeoning Washington corridor and the nation’s capital. Chu Contracting completed installation of the panels on the Phase 1 stations and is the roofing contractor on all Phase 2 stations as well. “Phase 1 was an extremely complex design and a challenging installation,” according to Ted Yim, project manager. “The site was tight and congested and the job progressed through a very complicated schedule.” SOLUTION: More than 150,000 sq. ft. of Rheinzink prePATINA blue-grey and prePATINA graphite-grey was used in multiple applications on all five Phase 1 stations. The 1-in. Double Lock Standing Seam Panels highlight the escalator vaults, rider pavilions, pedestrian bridges and platform canopies. In addition, approximately 180,000 sq. ft. of Rheinzink Double Lock Standing Seam Panels has been specified for use on five of the six Phase 2 stations.

3 IN THE NAME OF PUBLIC SAFETY In addition to meeting a number of blast protection and security requirements, an East Coast public safety facility required a 2-hour fire rating with hose stream capabilities for a glass wall between the secure entrance and main lobby and an adjacent glass wall by the security officer’s desk. SAFTI’s SuperLite II-XL 120 with heat strengthened laminated glass in a GPX blast framing system was the solution.

SAFTI FIRST Not only did SAFTI FIRST deliver a one-hour fire resistive curtainwall system for the Ratcliff-designed San Jose Downtown Health Center in California, but Safti’s engineers worked closely with the building team to ensure that the system allowed for deflection and story-drift movement in concert with the adjacent nonrated curtainwall to comply with seismic requirements. SuperLite II-XL 60 fire-rated glazing is insulated with Solarban 70XL inside GPX Curtain Wall framing.

A CLEAR VIEW Eliminating the need for colored internal spacers or vertical mullions between adjoining glass pieces, the new Fireframes ClearView system from Technical Glass Products supports more seamless transitions between up to 60-minute fire-rated glazing panels. The Pilkington Pyrostop glass is made from layers of Optiwhite nearly colorless, low-iron float glass and clear intumescent interlayers made from multi-laminate, as opposed to a sensitive polymer gel.

last detail: architectural leader

by Megan Mazzocco, Senior Editor

Designing for Social Connection Years ago, Peter Sagal of NPR fame, as emcee of a local AIA Awards night, once feigned fear of Studio “Gang,” as it converged on stage to accept multiple awards. Since then, this good “gang” has gone on to add socially minded projects to its repertoire of award-winning architecture.

CITY HYDE PARK Jeanne Gang has been looking at how tall buildings can have a social component. Her City Hyde Park residential project in Chicago exemplifies one way in which people can have a visual connection to each other.

Jeanne Gang, principal, Studio Gang, recently shared the firm’s vision to promote thriving urban hubs at the New York Times’ Cities of Tomorrow salon. Following is excerpted from the event.

“Tall buildings were originally buildings that people thought didn’t have any social component,” says Jeanne Gang. “But we’ve been looking at how to make it possible for people to connect, or at the least, have a visual connection to each other,” notes the architect of the firm’s latest project in Chicago. The residential building, City Hyde Park, features balconies and common areas as the means to make such connections, and is a reflection of her passion for making connections among citizens. In New York, the design of the firm’s Brownsville Rescue Station unearthed a new way of approaching community development. “It’s not a top-down, what-we-think-it-needs [project],” says Gang, but rather adds it’s about asking the community what they think it needs. The inviting design of station features a proverbial front porch apron with bench seating that encourages neighbors to stop by, linger and interact. The success of the Brownsville station, in fact, laid the framework for a police station project back in Chicago in a neighborhood experiencing racially charged tensions. To help bridge the gap, Studio Gang devised onsite recreation—in this case, a full-court outdoor basketball arena in a fraction of an excessively large parking lot that isolated the station. The community embraced the idea, and police and residents rallied to make Polis Station happen. Gang says architects should view community engagement as part of the design process and simply make it protocol. “[Even] if you come in with a really cool design, the ownership won’t be there,” says Gang. She admits engagement can be intimidating on several fronts; the initial community meeting can be confrontational, and architects are concerned about feedback affecting design aesthetics. “We learn how to defend our designs, but we don’t actually learn how to engage the community, but it’s the future of design.” This was the case for a community boathouse project on the Chicago River, an area Gang calls the “backyard of the city.” The process of researching a book, raised community awareness about people having access to the water, and it set the foundation for the boathouse, which coincided with the city’s plans to restore and overhaul its entire riverfront. The firm is continuing efforts to further excavate underutilized community assets, notably libraries, researching how to re-utilize them, and network them to make them more visible—and accessible—to civic life, providing a bridge to essential social services.

BIOPHILIC UNDERSTUDY The building’s balcony “stems” act as columns that take on building loads. Platforms extend in “phyllotactic” patterns that allow sightlines between neighbors.

FRONT-PORCH COMMUNITY

A SOCIAL STRUCTURE Balconies and common areas are key design elements for Gang. Chicago’s City Hyde Park is a reflection of her passion for making connections among citizens. Gang says that design is more than making the form of the building, it is how to connect these dots.

Rescue workers like to eat together and stay together for days at a time. “They develop a strong community, which makes them attractive to the people in the neighborhood,” says Gang.
