A GLOWING CRYSTAL FOR DOWNTOWN COLUMBUS Downtown Columbus, Ohio has a new sculptural symbol. “The Makers Monument” by sculptor Mark Reigelman is a cluster of perforated rectangular shafts posed at various angles, rising to a height of 20 ft. and resembling a crystalline formation emerging from the earth. Riegelman conceived his sculpture to reflect the city’s culture of craftsmanship and High Street as a maker’s hub. With a computational designer, he created a series of algorithms representing silhouettes of such images as a bowler hat for fashion, a saw blade for woodworking, and an automobile for technology. “From there, we broke up the digital model into hundreds of individual digital faces that were laser-cut,” explains Reigelman. The perforated steel sheets were bent to the shape of each element and welded together to form the final 7,000-pound work. Lighting also plays an important role in the piece, highlighting the perforations within each shaft. The lighting design was created by Francis Krahe & Associates with Lindsay Stefans serving as lead designer and project manager. “We had to balance between getting just the right positions to achieve the desired theatrical effect, while preventing glare.” The light was provided by six Lumenpulse Lumenbeam Grande fixtures, 3000K, fitted with a snoot and wire guard. The designers determined that in-grade fixtures could not be easily shielded. The standard snoot supplied the best cutoff for their purposes. Four of the Lumenpulse fixtures have 20-degree beam spreads, while two fixtures have 40-degree beam spreads. “We chose above-ground because we needed a © Abby Kamagate

fixture that was aimable to achieve the theatrical effects we wanted to achieve,” Stefans noted. “But we also needed to have higher light levels. The ambient levels on High Street at night are quite high. The surroundings have a lot of competing signage, street lighting and storefront lighting. ABOVE: Because surrounding ambient levels and competing signage at night are quite high, aimable, above-ground fixtures were chosen to achieve theatrical effects and higher light levels.

It’s a very active street, with considerable nighttime pedestrian traffic as well,” she points out.• 

OFFICE TRENDS

Hospitality Trends Adapt to Office Design Parimatch Tech is sleek and informal, with space-defining lighting. Parimatch Tech in Kiev, Ukraine is a living case study in how the basic objectives of hospitality design are being adapted to today’s smart office environments. Here, the cross-over of hospitality and commercial design changing the face of today’s workplaces is exemplified in the layout, furnishings, and lighting that combine art and technology. Office design has come a long way since the German Quickborner Group introduced the open office concept almost 75 years ago. Their theory was to take staff workers out of individual offices

and group them in separate work stations creating office landscapes. Corporations responded to the premise of lower operating costs, and higher productivity based on improved employee communication. Standardized overhead fluorescent lighting was a one-size-fits-all solution. Since that era, the design pendulum has been swinging in the opposite direction. Lines are becoming blurred between commercial, retail and hospitality design, indicating fast-moving trends that are influencing the way people work. Flexibility has become a key component in attracting and retaining workers and overall employee productivity. Human-centric design, customized workspaces, and increased demand for relaxation

PUBLIC + CULTURAL TRENDS

Welcome Home Downtown North Platte, Neb. wanted to improve the overall ambience of the downtown historic district and create a welcoming environment for residents and visitors. Updates to the 100-yearold main streets such as building façades, new building awnings, trees, flowers, archways, bike racks and lighting transform the historic Canteen District. It completed its facelift topped off by PRIZM Lighting’s Pixel Dot RGBW with 12-in. spacing and a touchscreen controller from American Lighting. “We selected the PRIZM Pixel Dot string lights based on the recommendation of John Gustafson from Snell Services Inc. and the high quality of the product. Its touch-screen controller provides several lighting options including color changing and chasing. This enables us to change the lights to red and white for Cornhusker games, as well as switch the colors to match our two local high schools for their events,” said Sarah Talbott, President of the Board of Directors for the North Platte Downtown Assn. Implemented in Spring 2021, 4,900 ft. of PRIZM Pixel Dot is attached to new street lamp poles, supported by aircraft cable, and runs zig-zag over Dewey Street from 4th to 6th St. The controller is mounted in a climate-controlled cabinet, which provides air conditioning and heat. The PRIZM Pixel Dot series features a flexible strand and full-color LED nodes designed for extraordinary effects and expansive installations without the constraints of luminaire size, shape or space. Its linear form factor accommodates two and 3-D applications for architectural accent and perimeter lighting, large-scale signage and dynamic displays. The series provides easy interconnecting lead and tail wires for faster installs with 80,000 hours rated performance life. According to Gustafson, the PRIZM Pixel Dot series was easy to set up, program and support with ABOVE: The lights automatically go on at sunset and turn off at 1:00 a.m. The downtown merchants are very happy with the outcome and are looking to install more of these lights in different areas in the future.

The Graduate Roosevelt Island Hotel showcases New York City’s cityscape and sunlight.

Unparalleled New York View Manhattan is perhaps one of the best-known islands in the world, but nestled right next to it, in the East River, between the boroughs of Manhattan and Queens, sits an island unknown to many—Roosevelt Island. Measuring roughly two miles long and 800-ft. wide at its widest point, these 147 acres were used mostly for hospitals from 1921 to 1973. Today, it hosts an institute for higher learning and a hotel. The Joan & Irwin Jacobs Technion-Cornell Institute is the academic partnership between the Technion–Israel Institute of Technology and Cornell University, which maintains its primary campus in Ithaca, N.Y. ARCHITECTURAL ILLUMINATION MATTERS

Crafting a Modern Luxury Experience with Pantheon Flair

When Studio Marco Piva was assigned to complete the architectural and interior design of the Marriott’s Pantheon Iconic Rome Hotel, Autograph Collection, there were several challenges. The project required the renovation of a building that had already lived many lives as the Hotel Bologna and a government office. The goal was to bring modernity to the five-star hotel culture and creatively pay homage to the history without becoming another cliché. There was also an incredibly truncated timeframe—the hotel planning, design and construction had to be completed in 11 months. In revamping the building, the design team sought to make a few of the original architectural elements the heroes of the new hotel’s design. They decided to lean into the arches outlining the central corridor, so Piva added more arches to the main wall passages and made them points of visual interest. Now the lobby welcomes guests with an intriguing perspective of bronze arches, thoughtfully illuminated, and white gypsum vaults. The Pantheon, which is just steps away from the hotel, was also selected as a dominant influence. Bronze appears throughout the project as a reference to the large hinges on the Pantheon entrance door and the distinctive central hole in its renowned dome, the oculus, is recalled several times throughout the hotel’s distinctive design.

STUDIO MARCO PIVA USES LIGHT TO SHOWCASE AND RECALL SPECIAL ARCHITECTURAL FEATURES ON THE ICONIC ROMAN HOTEL.

 Rooftop Divinity Restaurant The Divinity Terrace Lounge Bar is named for and decorated to celebrate the seven planetary gods to whom the Pantheon is consecrated. The materials that were so prominent throughout the rest of the hotel—marble, bronze and incredible lighting elements—are found here as well. Piva’s design is composed of threaded bars, plus a rectangular panel with a brushed bronze finish. Dimmable 3000K LED lighting elements are integrated into the structure. Total power used is 105W. Indirect decorative light along the perimeter is furnished by a 3000K white light LED strip. Above, a waterfall of steel cables transmits light from 3000K dimmable LED lamps. Lengths vary from 23 to 26 in. Total power is 75W.

 Ground Floor On the ground floor, the gallery’s arched elements are illuminated by a special LED lighting system that was produced by Puraluce from Piva’s drawings. The overhead circular fixtures that echo the oculus are incorporated above the reception station, in the lobby and in the lobby bar. There are also several elegant chandeliers that contribute toward the elegant ambience in the restaurant and lounge bar.

 Guest Rooms Of the total of 79 guest rooms, 18 are suites. The central ceiling light is circular and another element reminiscent of the oculus in the Pantheon. Artemide’s custom circular fixture theme is carried through in the wall lamp. Its curved shade has a brush bronze finish. Each 5W, 3000K, diffused side light is fitted with a DALI controller plus a 2W reading lamp that is adjustable to a narrow beam. Cove lighting accents the ceiling line and above the room’s panel.

Recreating Pueblo Deco in El Paso Built in 1930, the 19-story El Paso Hilton was the first high rise in Conrad Hilton’s hotel chain. Photos: James Bargne, Michael Stavaridis; courtesy, Cooper Carry

It was designed by Henry C. Trost in magnificent Pueblo Deco style—a hybrid of Art Deco and Pueblo Revival movements that blends geometric ornamentation with Native American art and influences of the Wild West. Although several decades of renovations had altered the aesthetic, when the hotel reopened in June 2020, as the Plaza Hotel Pioneer Park, the original essence of this incredible property had been restored. façade still boasts a combination of red brick and concrete, topped with a Ludowici clay tile pyramidal roof, and the setback “steps” that are one of the most characteristic features of Art Deco architecture. The renovation of the interior corrected many of the missteps taken over the years that altered the original design. The design team, which included The Johnson Studio, Cooper Carry’s in-house interior and specialty design service, and consultant Scott Oldner Lighting Design, reviewed vintage newspaper stories and photos to recreate the Pueblo Deco aesthetic. These historical sources also informed the selection of the lighting fixtures—which meet the illumination and efficiency targets of modern lighting systems today, in forms that combine classic Art Deco angularity with Southwestern details. Nearly all the interior areas in the Plaza Hotel Pioneer Park were revamped during this massive renovation. Lobby spaces include sparkle

Winery’s Showcases ‘Modern Barn Concept’ with Lighting Design Innovative lighting aligns with winery’s aesthetics and rigorous standards. CHALLENGE: When Silver Oak’s Alexander Valley Winery decided to conduct their

state-of-the-art wine making in a modern, yet sustainable, facility that featured reclaimed materials, targeting LEED Platinum was a top objective. In addition, Piechota Architecture and the lighting design team at EJA Lighting Design were tasked with several other design goals: showcasing the natural beauty of the “modern barn concept” architecture, creating a welcoming space for tasting and hospitality, highlighting retail locales, building systems to illuminate offices and production facilities, plus subtly lighting a trail through the vineyards for nighttime tours and melding the interior space with the surrounding landscape. INFLUENCE: With a net-positive water and energy rating, Silver Oak Winery was

designed specifically to “give more than it takes” from the environment. The unique challenge was to design cutting-edge lighting systems which align with the winery’s rigorous environmental standards, yet still meet the multi-functional and aesthetic needs of the various spaces. SOLUTION: The design for this project demonstrated a well-conceived system

of sensor, time-based and touch-screen controls to manage lighting for various activities in workspaces, hospitality and for touring through the night landscape. The facility-wide BACnet control system

integration provides real-time analysis of energy use and allows for continuous improvement. The design team created an exquisite ambiance, while honoring the dark sky, and still achieved a net-positive energy rating overall. In terms of luminaires, EJA Lighting Design used No. 8 Lighting’s 800 Series in the soaring wood ceilings. The wood ceiling trims are unique and patented as they have rare earth magnets that snap into place for a tight seamless fit in wood ceilings. The 800 Series, a recessed LED downlight, offers an array of field interchangeable lamp module options, lumen packages, optic, driver and trim options. The universal design accepts adjustable, fixed, wall wash and mirror reflector lamp modules. All 800 Series housings are IC-Rated, airtight, and CCEA approved, and can be installed in direct contact with standard or spray-foam insulation. The high efficacy of these recessed downlights exceeds the JA8/ Title 24 California energy code requirements, and one of the most important “green” elements of the 800 series is its future-proof technology, allowing for retrofit to new and improved technologies. This project was the winner of the 2019 SF Lux Awards Award of Distinction-First Place and the Award of Merit for Energy & Environmental Design. Enhanced by innovative lighting features and techniques, designed to be architecturally respectful, energy efficient, but above all, exquisitely luminous, it’s also the first SF Lux award winner to be a net-positive project. This is the first production winery to be awarded LEED Platinum certification for Building Design and Construction.

GLOBAL TECH GIANT BRINGS VISION TO LIFE WITH HQ ILLUMINATION AKAMAI TECHNOLOGIES Cambridge, Mass.

Challenge: In 2019, content delivery network providers Akamai Technologies needed a lighting solution for their new headquarters. The towering 19-story LEED Gold and WELL-certified building—the district’s tallest—was designed to consolidate Akamai’s six local offices, bringing its more than 2,000 Boston employees together under a single roof for the first time since the company’s inception more than two decades ago. Eschewing tradition in favor of an outside-thebox approach, the global tech leaders sought a way to light their new headquarters that would communicate their brand vision. Influence: Akamai desired connectedness in a lighting solution that would span across its sprawling 482,000-sq.-ft. office space. The new headquarters functioned not only as a centralized local office but also as a global hub that would connect their offices across the country and around the world. That theme of global connection had to be felt throughout the space. There was also an additional, more tangible need: lighting the building in a way that would encourage movement, collaboration and creativity for employees. With the unique origami-like layout of the offices, fixtures had to be carefully

CHICAGO HEALTH FACILITY RECEIVES KEY LIGHTING DONATION ESPERANZA HEALTH CENTER Chicago, Ill.

Challenge: When the non-profit Esperanza Health Center built its new facility, located in Chicago’s underserved Brighton Park neighborhood, it had a grand vision: a purpose-built facility that would combine healthcare, wellness activities and a central oasis for community activities. Chicago architectural firm Juan Gabriel Moreno Architects (JGMA) has a long association with projects designed to positively impact underserved communities. They designed a striking, angular building with a modern, orange facade, referencing Esperanza’s brand colors. The organization had a tight budget and Focal Point decided to be actively involved in the project, by donating the lighting. Influence: “Lighting is typically one of the last items completed on construction projects and can often be scaled back due to budget considerations,” says Focal Point President Chris Thornton, “We knew the vision the Esperanza team had for this facility and wanted to take that

BIKE PARK STAYS LIT DAY AND NIGHT ROCKSTAR ENERGY BIKE PARK North Houston, Texas

Challenge: Rockstar bike park is open and operational day and night, so lighting is a key component to the ambiance and functionality of the facility and the safety of the guests. Superior lighting products were required to perform as advertised and provide precise IES patterns with unparalleled uniformity and low glare optics, ensuring harsh glare would not disrupt a rider’s line of sight and cause accidents. Influence: In the special bowls and street feature areas of the park, the lighting design called for a luminaire that would complement and reinforce the aesthetic of the space without any compromise to performance. The designers knew that these areas would be heavily featured in event photography and videos, especially during highprofile professional competitions. Solution: The project specifiers, Wylie Consulting Engineers and the Office of James Burnett (OJB), consulted with Lighting Associates, Inc. on elements of the lighting design at the facility. One

Present and Future Applications of LLLC Compatibility would encourage development of new building controls technologies and help define the future of healthy buildings.

LLLC technology is a competitive choice for new construction1,2. But, to integrate the technologies to help reverse climate change and support human health broadly, we need to implement them at scale, and that means into existing buildings, as well as new construction. A recent study was conducted comparing LLLC one-for-one retrofits to a full lighting redesign approach. The findings showed that LLLC 1:1 retrofits provided similar energy and light quality performance at roughly one-third of the cost of a full lighting retrofit1. LLLC systems also can enhance occupant comfort, safety and operational efficiency and provide fine-grained occupancy data which could be used to optimize HVAC and dynamic façade controls or improve security. Paired with Wi-Fi or Bluetooth connections, luminaires could help track assets or facilitate spatially resolved contact tracing. Lowresolution infrared or visual cameras could supplement fire detection systems or help fine-tune visual and thermal comfort. Existing applications of LLLC technology are mainly centered around automated lighting controls in commercial office spaces and schools with the primary goal of optimizing energy consumption while maintaining comfortable lighting levels and quality for occupants. Occupancy sensing has been a widely adopted and studied control strategy that has enabled significant lighting energy savings in modern commercial buildings and residential homes3. Given the prevalence and advancement of occupancy sensing and daylight harvesting over the past few decades, alongside related technologies like Building Automation Systems (BAS), expanding these capabilities to alternate uses has become much more realistic. LLLC technology has potential to serve as an apparatus (network

backbone) that can facilitate communication between controls logic, building systems, and various environmental sensing technologies via the LLLC distributed sensor network. Compared to more comprehensive networked lighting control (NLC) systems, LLLC offers a low touch and cost-effective alternative approach to maintain updated distributed sensors in buildings1. LLLC also has the potential to support additional technology innovations, some of which are outlined in the table. While this would also require standardized protocols for interfacing and networking across manufacturers and products, a form of universal compatibility across LLLC systems would further encourage development of new and emerging building controls technologies and help define the future of healthy buildings. Communicating these potential benefits to manufacturers is paramount as it all depends on their willingness to develop standardized data formatting and interface tools to help pave the way toward a form of universal system integration across the industry. •
