I pray all are doing well and getting ready for Lent, it’ll be here before you know it. Just to put you all up to speed I have given up chocolate for the New Year – since January one until next January 2024. I figure if I can give up chocolate – which I love for Lent for the Lord than I can do it for the whole year – so far, so good. That being the case there are other observances I will be involved in for this Lent.
Today’s Gospel is one that hits us right between the eyes. “Love your enemies, pray for those who persecute you. If you only love those who love you, what good is that? – do not tax collectors and sinners do the same.”
So many people I speak with and counsel come to me feeling that their particular situation gives them license to be exempt from these instructions on loving those who hurt us. There are no excuses and no reprieves given in God’s word, we heard this just last week in our first reading from Sirach; “No one does he command to act unjustly, to none does he give license to sin.”
God forgives us and so we are called to forgive one another. Remember, forgiving someone does not mean that we are saying it is OK that we were mistreated or treated badly. Forgiveness simply means you chose to let it go and it no longer affects every aspect of your life and love for others. I promise you it DOES affect all your relationships if you harbor hatred in your heart. God’s love and hatred cannot exist in one human heart. I pray that – if need be, these words lead you on a road to forgiveness.
God Bless You, Love, Fr. Mike

In today’s Gospel, Jesus gave a radical commandment
“When someone strikes you on your right cheek, turn the other one to him as well” (Matthew 5:39). Today, it is cliché and remains radical, because it has the power to change hearts and nations.
Ask Gandhi. Even though he wasn’t Catholic, Gandhi leveraged the power of nonviolence to bring about a new kind of revolution. His peaceful tactics inaugurated a massive movement which eventually resulted in economic independence for India. With that we might also reveal the power of such a disposition in our lives! Christ himself did not hide his face “from insults and spitting” (Isaiah 50:6). We all experience being “struck on the cheek” in various ways. We want our parish and diocese to be a haven where people can find the strength to face the evils in their lives. When you support our Catholic Ministry Appeal, you help increase our ability to heal and sustain the bruised and weary. Through your generosity of prayer, gifts, and good words, we can continue to offer the bread of angels to the hungry and make the Catholic Ministry Appeal shine brightly! God bless you.
¿Recuerdas a Gandhi?

Once again, our community will participate in CRS Rice Bowl, a faith-in-action program that invites us to reflect on the challenges of global hunger—and our responsibility to respond to the needs of our global human family.
The Gospel of Matthew (25:31-46) will be our constant reminder that we ought to commit to sharing what we have with those in need, trusting in God's abundance, and doing all we can to help feed the hungry. Through our Lenten prayers, fasting and almsgiving, we will be encouraged to respond to the call to make sure that all our brothers and sisters - and especially all children around the world - are fed good, nutritious food that gives them what they need to fulfill their God-given potential. During this holy season of Lent, CRS Rice Bowl invites us to focus our attention on three countries, namely, Rwanda, Guatemala, and Bangladesh. It is important that you come together as a family and reflect on the cross of hunger and lack of proper nutrition that so many of our brothers and sisters in those countries and all around the world are forced to endure. In so doing, all of us can pledge to stand alongside these members of our human family, supporting them as the Gospel calls us to do. Please consider the following suggestions to fully engage in this year’s Lenten journey:
• Use your 2023 Rice Bowl Calendar daily to guide your prayer, fasting, and almsgiving.
• Read the Stories of Hope and daily reflections to inspire your Lenten journey. Visit Lenten Stories | CRS Rice Bowl or CRS’ You Tube channel to watch videos of the people and communities we will support through our Lenten gifts to CRS Rice Bowl.
• Prepare simple, Meatless meals on all Fridays of Lent to eat in solidarity with our brothers and sisters around the world - you could even attempt to cook some food from the countries mentioned above! We will collect your CRS Rice Bowls at the end of Lent. There will be baskets in the back of the church. Thank you for participating in CRS Rice Bowl with your family.

SEVENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
