Follow the Good Shepherd There’s a popular TV show today called “The Masked Singer”. It’s not a show that I watch on a regular basis, but I have caught portions of it from time-to-time. The premise of the show is that a celebrity, somebody who is well-known, is dressed up in costume from head-to-toe; they have a mask on. Then, they perform a well-known song and it’s up to the panel to try to determine who the celebrity is, based on the sound of their voice. Today the church celebrates Good Shepherd Sunday. In our Gospel reading today, from the Gospel according to John, we read that the gatekeeper opens the gate for his sheep, and the sheep hear his voice. The shepherd calls his own sheep by name, and he leads them out. When he has driven out all his own, he walks ahead of them, and the sheep follow him because they recognize his voice. In our lives today and in our world, there are many voices calling out, inviting us to follow them, but many of them are not of God. So how do we recognize God’s voice in our lives today? The best way of course is through Scripture, through the Bible, which we believe is the word of God itself. If we abide by that word, if we follow God’s word, if we listen to His word, we can be sure that it is God’s voice that is speaking to us and leading us on the right path. Be careful in our lives - not to follow voices that we don’t recognize. God loves us and He would never lead us down a path that is not good for us, down a path that would not lead to salvation in our lives. Again, we are called to follow the Good Shepherd, who is Jesus Christ, who loves His flock, who loves each one of us, and cares for us as His own. I invite you to participate in Mass this weekend to hear the voice of the Good Shepherd. Follow His voice. He will lead us to salvation. Bishop Gregory Parkes, Diocese of St. Petersburg I pray these lines find all doing well. I pray that everyone is still doing well, still staying safe. I don’t know about you, but my thought process has changed over time, I’m just really sick of staying home, it really feels like it should be over by now – of course THIS IS NOT THE CASE. When I do go out, which is seldom it really seems like the world is back up and operational – again, we are not there yet, but I pray it will be soon. Today we are likened to an animal in our Gospel, I would love to tell you it is a lion, an eagle, maybe a duck or a bear. None of these are the case because none of these fit our general personality. Who are we likened to – sheep? Sheep are animals who are passive, timid and generally open to suggestion, good or bad, right or wrong. Sheep are nature’s D student, sheep, left to themselves do not make the right choices, in fact, given the option they will choose the worst or most destructive path. Enter the Shepherd!!! It is no easy task to be a shepherd, vigilance is a necessity. Just two quick examples, the shepherd brings his flock to running streams (thus words from the 23rd psalm) which is a lot of work but much healthier for the animal, however – left to themselves if there is a puddle from a past rain these become riddled with infection, parasites and all destructive elements for the sheep. A shepherd wrote a book which stated, if given the option of a running stream or a disease-ridden puddle the sheep will choose the puddle every time, thus they are shepherded where exactly to drink. Secondly, (He leads me to green pastures, psalm 23) a good shepherd makes sure that there is good healthy grass for his flock to feed in. In this same book by the shepherd he speaks of how sheep grazing fields are separated by fences. There was a field in horrible shape right next to his, the sheep there were sickly and mal nourished – yet, given the option his sheep tried to graze from the other yard. I repeat my phraseology that sheep are natures D student. Now, on to us, how like sheep are we. So often we know there are things bad for us, yet do we know better to stay away, a simple example fried foods. They will kill you; they are bad for you and your body does not process them well, yet do we stay away – Heck No! Even this author (in the loosest sense of the term) gives in to that which is fried! We know what is right and what is wrong, we are given the 10 commandments to follow in order to follow the “Shepherd” and have a peaceful, stress free life. This is the beauty of us being sheep and Jesus being the Shepherd – He guides us, protects us, shows us the good path along which to travel and provides for us whatever we truly need! We all have a lot of time on our hands and it can be easy for us to take control of all this free time instead of taking time to (lie down and rest at the feet of the Shepherd. Psalm 23) When our eyes are fixed on Jesus everything is better! Have you told your shepherd (Jesus) how much you love and appreciate Him today? And finally – Why did the can crusher quit his job? Because it was soda pressing. Have a Blessed Week! Love, Fr. Mike 2
