Are you a fisher of men? “Jesus said to them, ‘Come after me, and I will make you fishers of men.’” – Mark 1:17 The year 2020 was a difficult year for many. Racial and political unrest and a global pandemic made it historic and memorable for all the wrong reasons. It also made us hope for a new year of change and opportunity. More than 2000 years ago, Simon and Andrew were struggling fisherman, just trying to make a living while under the rule of the Roman government and religious authorities. Their lives revolved around fish – catching and selling them. That was their present and their future reality. Not really much to hope for when you think about it. That is until they encounter Jesus. From that moment forward, their lives would change forever. Jesus offers them a new outlook on life, a future of hope, new opportunity and a brighter tomorrow. They make the decision to abandon their nets and follow Jesus. Many people feel trapped in their current reality. Career goals, societal pressures and family responsibilities can make life difficult and challenging. We often look for short term solutions that we think will bring us happiness and fulfillment. But, in the end, they only leave us feeling more empty. But there’s a different path we can follow – a path that leads to ultimate and eternal happiness. It’s the path of following Jesus Christ. Jesus’s invitation to Simon, Andrew, James and John is also extended to us. Come, follow me. I know that many are already following Jesus. You have a good life, attend church regularly and do charitable works. But are you a fisher of men as Jesus says? Do you give good example to others by the way you live your life? Do you invite others to a relationship with Jesus Christ by sharing the Good News? Our mission is to proclaim Jesus Christ, invite others to follow Him, and to see His presence in those we encounter. It’s not too late to embark on a different path as we begin this new year. —Bishop Gregory Parkes

I pray these lines find all doing well. I can now write that YES, it was a wonderful time off! (I wrote in my previous article what a great time I was having -BEFORE I had it) I got to do so much stuff around my condo, had a COVID scare during my time but tested negative, just shows me yet again that we are not out of the woods when it comes to getting past this pandemic. We will get there but we are not there yet. Today’s Gospel once again speaks of a vocational call to follow Jesus. Jesus had an amazing way about Him – maybe because he is God, but I feel there was so much more. You know as well as I do that there are some people that you just love being around because they are so positive, they remain upbeat and you even “feel better about yourself when you are with them,” got that from a TV show but I think its true as well, I always feel much better about myself after prayer time with the Lord!! Something to note is that all these men who were called were secure in their jobs. They were established and good at what they did. However, Jesus comes along, and they leave behind all that they knew. Their lives were going to be changed forever. Would any of us do that today? Leave everything we knew to follow someone, had we been around at the time Jesus walked the earth in his humanity, would we have left everything behind to follow? Just something to reflect on for the week! God Bless You! Love, Fr, Mike

- Monseñor Gregory Parkes LECTURAS DE LA SEMANA Lunes: Hch 22:3-16 o Hch 9:1-22; Sal 117 (116):1bc, 2; Mc 16:15-18 Martes: 2 Tm 1:1-8 o Ti 1:1-5; Sal 96 (95):1-3, 7-8a, 10;Mc 3:31-35 Miércoles: Heb 10:11-18; Sal 110 (109):1-4; Mc 4:1-20 Jueves: Heb 10:19-25; Sal 24 (23):1-6; Mc 4:21-25 Viernes: Heb 10:32-39; Sal 37 (36):3-6, 23-24, 39-40; Mc 4:26-34 Sábado: Heb 11:1-2, 8-19; Lc 1:69-75; Mc 4:35-41 Domingo: Dt 18:15-20; Sal 95 (94):1-2, 6-9; 1 Cor 7:32-35; Mc1:21-28
