THE CHOSEN REMNANT Zephaniah is one of the least-known of the Old Testament prophets. He speaks in today’s first reading of impending judgment. But the Lord will leave a “remnant” in Israel. This image of a remnant, or remainder, was to become vital to both Judaism and Christianity. Paul’s letter to Corinth makes obvious his deep concern for the Christians there. They are too self-confident, he says, too sure of themselves. He admonishes them to remember that Christ has given them all they have. Today’s Gospel comprises the opening of Jesus’ “Great Sermon.” As God gave Moses the law on Sinai, so now Jesus gathers his disciples on a hillside to teach them the new law. Each of these Beatitudes contrasts the humiliation of the present with the glory of the future: poverty vs. the riches of God’s kingdom, hunger for holiness vs. fulfillment in the Spirit, persecution vs. the reign of God. Jesus is here speaking to God’s chosen “remnant.” READINGS FOR THE WEEK Heb 11:32-40; Ps 31:20-24; Mk 5:1-20 Heb 12:1-4; Ps 22:26b-28, 30-32; Mk 5:21-43 Wednesday: Heb 12:4-7, 11-15; Ps 103:1-2, 13-14, 17-18a; Mk 6:1-6 Thursday: Mal 3:1-4; Ps 24:7-10; Heb 2:14-18; Lk 2:22-40 [22-32] Friday: Heb 13:1-8; Ps 27:1, 3, 5, 8b-9; Mk 6:14-29 Saturday: Heb 13:15-17, 20-21; Ps 23:1-6; Mk 6:30-34 Sunday: Is 58:7-10; Ps 112:4-9; 1 Cor 2:1-5; Mt 5:13-16 Monday: Tuesday:

IN KEEPING WITH OUR TRADITION, WE AT INCARNATION CATHOLIC SCHOOL: Inspire disciples of Christ, Challenge each individual to a be a life-long learner, and Strive to live our Catholic faith through service to each other and the community. --------------------------------------------------------5111 Webb Road * Tampa, FL 33615 * www.icstampa.org * Tel: (813) 884-4502 * Fax: (813) 885-3734
As a Catholic school, we believe that each student is unique and learns in different ways. This year we began using a Blended Learning approach in the math classroom to support this belief. Students rotate through various stations including a small group instruction station, a technology station using iPads, and a pair practice station. Students receive individualized attention, frequent feedback on progress, and opportunities to interact with 21st century learning tools. Our students are growing in their math and critical thinking skills as they progress through the school year! As one of the ICS Varsity and JV soccer coaches, it was a great honor to witness our student athletes grow in their soccer skills and faith this season. We ended with a great record on the scoreboard, but more importantly, our students showed their true Catholic and ICS spirit in the way they conducted themselves on and off the field. Our student athletes showed sportsmanship in their interactions with other teams, inspiring leadership as they taught their younger teammates fundamental skills, and focus on academics by placing their schoolwork as the priority. I am honored to be a teacher and coach at ICS where the students, faculty, and administration are deeply rooted in the Catholic faith! —Ms. Meagan Koeth, Middle School Math Teacher Sixth graders have been hard at work writing essays for the Knights of Columbus essay contest. This year students were to focus on religious freedom. This was a great opportunity for students to make a connection between their schoolwork, the events in the world around them, and their faith. In order to fully appreciate the topic, we began by discussing how our country was founded on religious freedom. We then focused on the importance of tolerance in our society. Students realized how fortunate they are to live in a country that affords them the opportunity to attend a Catholic school, pray in public when they are out to dinner with their family, or even to be allowed to wear a cross or religious medal around their neck. They were also able to appreciate that while they are free to practice their faith, it is amazing to live in a country that allows people to be free to practice whatever religion they believe in without the fear of punishment or persecution. We thank the Knights of Columbus for giving students the chance to focus on their faith through this amazing opportunity. Sixth graders worked through the writing process of planning, writing, editing, and rewriting. Most importantly they made real world connections to their faith and realized how blessed they are to be Catholic and live in the United States of America. —Mrs. Denise Sheldon, 6th Grade Language Arts & Religion Teacher

LECTURAS DE LA SEMANA Lunes: Heb 11:32-40; Sal 31 (30):20-24; Mc 5:1-20 Martes: Heb 12:1-4; Sal 22 (21):26b-28, 30-32; Mc 5:21-43 Miércoles: Heb 12:4-7, 11-15; Sal 103 (102):1-2, 13-14, 17-18a; Mc 6:1-6 Jueves: Mal 3:1-4; Sal 24 (23):7-10; Heb 2:14-18; Lc 2:22-40 [22-32] Viernes: Heb 13:1-8; Sal 27 (26):1, 3, 5, 8b-9; Mc 6:14-29 Sábado: Heb 13:15-17, 20-21; Sal 23 (22):1-6; Mc 6:30-34 Domingo: Is 58:7-10; Sal 112 (111):4-9; 1 Cor 2:1-5; Mt 5:13-16
