Turn to Christ for the Truth

“The people were astonished at his teaching, for he taught them as one having authority.” – Mark 1:22 Are there people that you tend to listen to more than others? Do you watch a particular news broadcast? Where do you go when you need to find out some important or critical information? Likely, you go to someone or someplace that you know you can trust. This was the case with Jesus. In this weekend’s Gospel from Mark, we read that Jesus comes to the synagogue and begins to teach. The people are astonished because He taught differently from the scribes. A man with an unclean spirit, says, “What have you to do with us, Jesus? Have you come to destroy us?” He continues, “I know who you are--the Holy One of God!” Jesus commands the spirit to leave and it departs from the man in a rather dramatic fashion. This is the first exorcism of Jesus that we read about. The witnesses were amazed at what they had just witnessed. An interesting observation in this story is that the unclean spirit recognizes the authority of Jesus, not just as a teacher, but also, the Holy One of God. He recognized the transformative power of Jesus. Yet, throughout his teaching ministry, the church leaders, government officials and many in the community continued to question His authority. This was the case throughout His life, and all the way through His passion and death. Even today there are many who don’t believe in Jesus Christ. As Christians, we allow many other things in this world to rule our lives—such as political correctness, money, our need for affirmation, and a desire to get to the top. But Christ is the authority and the ruler over all things including you and me. We say this, but do we really believe it? Have the courage today to acknowledge and accept Christ as the ruler of your life – the one you turn to when you need the truth. Pray for the Holy Spirit to guide you in all your decisions, and to strengthen you in your witness to others. -Bishop Gregory Parkes

I pray these lines find all doing well. All is great here at Incarnation Central, just livin’ the dream and still praying for an end of COVID. My current hope is that by this time next year this will all be just a memory we all look to forget. This week in our Gospel we hear about Jesus curing the man possessed by a demon. One aspect of this Gospel which stands out for me is that it is the unclean spirit who understands who Jesus truly is – the Holy One of God! This begs the question for our own lives, Jesus is with us so often and in so many ways; when we receive the Eucharist, in the Word proclaimed, when two or more are gathered in His name but there are so many other times as well, the question I would pose is – Do we know when He is with us? Nobody else seemed to realize who Jesus truly was, Jesus even had the unclean spirit remain quiet about it as well. I pray we do feel His presence and know Him to be with us because He truly is. It is in our stillness, in our simplicity of life and in our reaching out for Him that we will know His presence. God Bless You! Love, Fr. Mike

¿Has venido a acabar con nosotros? -Monseñor Gregory Parkes LECTURAS DE LA SEMANA Lunes: Heb 11:32-40; Sal 31 (30):20-24; Mc 5:1-20 Martes: Mal 3:1-4; Sal 24 (23):7-10; Heb 2:14-18; Lc 2:22-40 [22-32] Miércoles: Heb 12:4-7, 11-15; Sal 103 (102):1-2, 13-14, 17-18a; Mc 6:1-6 Jueves: Heb 12:18-19, 21-24; Sal 48 (47):2-4, 9-11; Mc 6:7-13 Viernes: Heb 13:1-8; Sal 27 (26):1, 3, 5, 8b-9; Mc 6:14-29 Sábado: Heb 13:15-17, 20-21; Sal 23 (22):1-6; Mc 6:30-34 Domingo: Jb 7:1-4, 6-7; Sal 147 (146):1-6; 1 Cor 9:16-19, 22-23; Mc 1:29-39
