AN ONGOING MISSION In his hometown synagogue, Jesus’ neighbors are amazed by his words. Nevertheless, they remind each other, “Is this not Joseph’s son?” Surely the people know who he is. The carpenter’s son. The young man who had learned in this very synagogue. The boy down the street. Conflict arises as Jesus begins to define himself in a new way. When he compares himself to the ancient prophets Elijah and Elisha the tensions grow. The tensions multiply when Jesus begins to tell of a new mission for God’s people: the good news of the scriptures is intended for all. In his famous passage from the First Letter to the Corinthians, St. Paul reminds us of the eternal nature of love. Love does not come to an end. In today’s readings, we are reminded that, like love, Jesus’ mission cannot be contained. Jesus slips through the crowd of persecutors and moves on to new challenges. We are called to this same perseverance in the name of love. TODAY’S READINGS First Reading — I am with you to deliver you, says the LORD (Jeremiah 1:4-5, 17-19). Psalm — I will sing of your salvation (Psalm 71). Second Reading — If I have all faith so as to move mountains, but do not have love, I am nothing (1 Corinthians 12:31 — 13:13 [13:4-13]). Gospel — No prophet is accepted in the prophet’s hometown (Luke 4:21-30).
READINGS FOR THE WEEK Monday: Heb 11:32-40; Ps 31:20-24; Mk 5:120 Tuesday: Heb 12:1-4; Ps 22:26b-28, 30-32; Mk 5:21-43 Wednesday: Heb 12:4-7, 11-15; Ps 103:1-2, 1314, 17-18a; Mk 6:1-6 Thursday: Heb 12:18-19, 21-24; Ps 48:2-4, 911; Mk 6:7-13 Friday: Heb 13:1-8; Ps 27:1, 3, 5, 8b-9; Mk 6:14-29 Saturday: Heb 13:15-17, 20-21; Ps 23:1-6; Mk 6:30-34 Sunday: Is 6:1-2a, 3-8; Ps 138:1-5, 7-8; 1 Cor 15:1-11 [3-8, 11]; Lk 5:1-11
Dear Brothers & Sisters in Christ at Incarnation Parish: I want to offer my sincere thanks for your hospitality, generosity and prayers supporting our mission work in Northern Alaska. As I shared this past weekend, we have 46 parishes spread over 410,000 square miles in a challenging Arctic environment. Your generosity will help us to continue to bring the sacraments to these remote parishes in the Diocese of Fairbanks which are often able to only experience Mass once every 6-8 weeks. The vast majority of these parishes are far below the poverty level as the Native Alaskan peoples live off the fruits of the land and sea, and hence your financial assistance will greatly help with the expensive travel in small aircraft to these locations as our priests and religious serve these good people of God. Please be assured of my Mass intentions and prayers for your families. It was a great joy to chat with many of you following Mass. Let us keep one another in prayer! In Christ’s peace, Bishop Chad Zielinski

All Catholics should arrive at least five minutes before the start of Mass to be able to spend some QUIET time in prayer before Mass begins. Under no circumstances, should one ever chew gum in Church. We also should not bring food, coffee, etc. (something for small children is permitted). Remember that all Catholics, including children, must fast at least one hour before receiving Holy Communion. When entering the nave of the Church, you should bless yourself with holy water as a reminder of your Baptism and the sacred space you are entering, and, consequentially, you should CEASE any conversations (except with God). As you approach the pew you are going to enter, you should make a profound bow toward the Sanctuary. (If you are entering the Chapel, you should genuflect. A genuflection should be made toward the Tabernacle by bending the right knee to touch the ground. This is an act of reverence and respect towards the Blessed Sacrament). After entering the pew, you should kneel in private prayer to recollect yourself before the start of Mass. This is NOT THE TIME TO CATCH UP ON THE WEEK’S NEWS WITH THE PERSON NEXT TO OR IN FRONT OF YOU. As Mass begins, we all stand and raise our voices to God in prayer and praise. He deserves it. We sit attentively to listen to the readings and the homily, yet stand for the gospel, the Creed, the Universal Prayers, and the Our Father. After the Holy, Holy, Holy, we should kneel until the Our Father (unless prevented from doing so to due to a physical infirmity). After the Lamb of God, all kneel (quietly) as we prepare to come forward to receive Holy Communion (or a blessing). If you have guests with you who are not Catholic (e.g. friends of your children), invite them to come forward with their arms crossed over their chest to receive a blessing instead (you may do the same thing if you are not in a state of Grace). You are to consume the Body of Christ immediately, DO NOT bring Him back to your pew. When approaching the Minister of Holy Communion, you should make a simple bow of the head before extending your hands or tongue to receive Holy Communion. If both hands are not available (e.g. you are holding a child, or your arm is in a cast), you should receive on the tongue. We offer Communion under both Species. If you desire to receive from the Chalice, approach the minister of Holy Communion with a Chalice (after first bowing your head). After responding “Amen” to “The Blood of Christ” take the Chalice and take a small sip before returning the Chalice to the Communion minister. When you return to the pew after receiving Communion, you should kneel (quietly) in profound prayer before God. One should focus on God and not other people coming back from Communion nor should you be talking to anyone (but God). One should NEVER leave Mass immediately after Communion (… unless the Church is on fire). It is an extreme act of disrespect to God to leave, Mass early (remember it was Judas who left the Last Supper early!). Please remain kneeling (unless you have a physical infirmity that does not allow you to do so) until the Sacristan has taken Jesus back into the Chapel. After Mass, you should wait until you are in the Narthex or outside to engage in conversations. This is done out of respect for the Blessed Sacrament as well as in deference to those who wish to stay behind and pray.

It has come to our attention that a scam email is out. The email looks like it’s from Fr. Michael and in the message, he’s asking for money. Recently, parishes have been targeted by similar scams and innocent parishioners wanting to help their pastor are falling for the scam. Because of this, we thought it was important that you know about it. If you receive a similar email, just DELETE IT! FYI - Fr. Michael would never request money from anyone by email.
Join us at St. Michael’s Hall for Empanadas Sale Venta de Empanadas 1– Empanada $2.00 each Empanadas Sale after all masses!
