BLESSED When we think of the word “Beatitude” we think of today’s discourse from Luke’s Gospel, or the more familiar one from Matthew (which begins “Blessed are the poor in spirit . . . ”). Actually, beatitudes occur throughout the prophets and Gospels. Today in Jeremiah (with an echo in the psalm) we hear, “Blessed is the one who trusts in the Lord” (Jeremiah 17:7). Following his resurrection in John’s Gospel, Christ proclaims, “Blessed are those who have not seen and have believed” (John 20:29). The evangelists placed these sayings throughout the Gospels as short reminders about the characteristics that one will find in a follower of Christ, characteristics that will help spread the Good News in this life and lead to eternal blessings in the next. In Latin, the saints are called the Beati, the “Blessed,” for they are the ones who lived the “blessed” life as described by Jesus throughout the Gospels. How blest are we, when we also strive to make our own days a living beatitude! TODAY’S READINGS First Reading — The one who trusts in the LORD is like a tree planted beside the waters (Jeremiah 17:5-8). Psalm — Blessed are they who hope in the Lord (Psalm 1). Second Reading — Christ has been raised from the dead, the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep (1 Corinthians 15:12, 16-20). Gospel — Blessed are you who are poor, hungry, weeping. Woe to you who are rich, filled, laughing (Luke 6:17, 20-26).

READINGS FOR THE WEEK Monday: Gn 4:1-15, 25; Ps 50:1, 8, 16bc-17, 20-26; Mk 8:11-13 Tuesday: Gn 6:5-8; 7:1-5, 10; Ps 29:1a, 2, 3ac-4, 3b, 9c-10; Mk 8:14-21 Wednesday: Gn 8:6-13, 20-22; Ps 116:12-15, 18-19; Mk 8:22-26 Thursday: Gn 9:1-13; Ps 102:16-21, 29, 22-23; Mk 8:27-33 Friday: 1 Pt 5:1-4; Ps 23:1-3a, 4-6; Mt 16:13-19 Saturday: Heb 11:1-7; Ps 145:2-5, 1011; Mk 9:2-13 Sunday: 1 Sm 26:2, 7-9, 12-13, 22-23; Ps 103:1-4, 8, 10, 12-13; 1 Cor 15:45-49; Lk 6:27-38

Our Condolences We offer our condolences and prayers to families who have lost a dear family member during the recent past weeks. Carlos Juan Diaz 12/10/64 - 2/4/19

May the souls of your dear ones rest in Peace!

SIXTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME Director of Faith Formation Deacon Matt Shirina dff@icctampa.org

February 17, 2019 813-884-3624

Religious Education Ministry Cheralyn Quevedo reled@icctampa.org

All Catholics should arrive at least five minutes before the start of Mass to be able to spend some QUIET time in prayer before Mass begins. Under no circumstances, should one ever chew gum in Church. We also should not bring food, coffee, etc. (something for small children is permitted). Remember that all Catholics, including children, must fast at least one hour before receiving Holy Communion. When entering the nave of the Church, you should bless yourself with holy water as a reminder of your Baptism and the sacred space you are entering, and, consequentially, you should CEASE any conversations (except with God). As you approach the pew you are going to enter, you should make a profound bow toward the Sanctuary. (If you are entering the Chapel, you should genuflect. A genuflection should be made toward the Tabernacle by bending the right knee to touch the ground. This is an act of reverence and respect towards the Blessed Sacrament). After entering the pew, you should kneel in private prayer to recollect yourself before the start of Mass. This is NOT THE TIME TO CATCH UP ON THE WEEK’S NEWS WITH THE PERSON NEXT TO OR IN FRONT OF YOU. As Mass begins, we all stand and raise our voices to God in prayer and praise. He deserves it. We sit attentively to listen to the readings and the homily, yet stand for the gospel, the Creed, the Universal Prayers, and the Our Father. After the Holy, Holy, Holy, we should kneel until the Our Father (unless prevented from doing so to due to a physical infirmity). After the Lamb of God, all kneel (quietly) as we prepare to come forward to receive Holy Communion (or a blessing). If you have guests with you who are not Catholic (e.g. friends of your children), invite them to come forward with their arms crossed over their chest to receive a blessing instead (you may do the same thing if you are not in a state of Grace). You are to consume the Body of Christ immediately, DO NOT bring Him back to your pew. When approaching the Minister of Holy Communion, you should make a simple bow of the head before extending your hands or tongue to receive Holy Communion. If both hands are not available (e.g. you are holding a child, or your arm is in a cast), you should receive on the tongue. We offer Communion under both Species. If you desire to receive from the Chalice, approach the minister of Holy Communion with a Chalice (after first bowing your head). After responding “Amen” to “The Blood of Christ” take the Chalice and take a small sip before returning the Chalice to the Communion minister. When you return to the pew after receiving Communion, you should kneel (quietly) in profound prayer before God. One should focus on God and not other people coming back from Communion nor should you be talking to anyone (but God). One should NEVER leave Mass immediately after Communion (… unless the Church is on fire). It is an extreme act of disrespect to God to leave, Mass early (remember it was Judas who left the Last Supper early!). Please remain kneeling (unless you have a physical infirmity that does not allow you to do so) until the Sacristan has taken Jesus back into the Chapel. After Mass, you should wait until you are in the Narthex or outside to engage in conversations. This is done out of respect for the Blessed Sacrament as well as in deference to those who wish to stay behind and pray.

We are still in need of a few more Catechists and Catechist-aids. If you feel God is calling you to help pass on our Faith to the children and youth of our Parish, please contact Cheralyn Quevedo at (813) 884-3624 and see where your gifts and talents can be used. Parents and Guardians, please DO NOT drop your children off in the parking lot on Sunday for Faith Formation, please park your vehicle and walk them to class. We do everything we can to keep your children safe, we need your cooperation. If you are running late you must sign in at the office, please do not open gates for anyone and close the gate (s) when you leave. Thank you.

Sexto Domingo del Tiempo Ordinario

BIENAVENTURADOS O DICHOSOS
