Jesus is the source of our peace and joy On this second Sunday of Easter, our Gospel reading from St. John recounts the coming of the Holy Spirit upon the disciples. Jesus breathes on them and says, “Receive the Holy Spirit. Whose sins you forgive are forgiven them, and whose sins you retain are retained.” However, I think it’s particularly relevant to us today how the Gospel begins. John tells us that the disciples were gathered together behind locked doors out of fear for the Jews. They were no doubt fearful that as followers of Jesus, they might endure the same suffering and death which they just witnessed Him endure. The Gospel says that Jesus came and stood in their midst, and showed them His hands and His side so they would know it was Him and not a ghost. The presence of Jesus brought them great joy, and Jesus said to them, “Peace be with you.” We can only imagine the peace that the presence of the Lord brought to them while they were experiencing such great fear. What are you fearful of? There is so much going on in our world today, and life just doesn’t seem normal. The uncertainty of when things will return to normal can cause both anxiety and fear. Is there something in your personal life that is causing you fear – health, job issues, finances? Fear serves to rob us of our joy and of hope which is what God wants for each of us. Jesus came out of love for each of us, and He wants us to have peace in our lives – even in the midst of uncertain times. The words He spoke to His disciples, He speaks to us, “Peace be with you.” He is the source of our peace and joy, and that will never change even if things around us are always changing. This Sunday, I invite you to celebrate the Lord’s Day by thanking God for the gift of His Son, Jesus Christ, who came that we might have life and peace. The disciples believed. Pray for the strength and courage to have faith and peace, particularly during these uncertain times. -Bishop Gregory Parkes, Diocese of St. Petersburg I pray these lines find all doing well and staying healthy AND staying IN!!! Things are incredibly quiet here at the office – as it should be, so much has shut down as we wait for the spread of this virus to be over. I want to take this opportunity to Thank so many of you who tuned into our Masses for Holy Week. I am writing this article on the Monday following Palm Sunday, so I am hoping ahead of time that all will be going well, and the other Masses will have gone great. By the time this gets to all of you I may be over my first wave of a Chocolate high but there’s no telling, I’ll be energy incarnate! I also want to take this opportunity to say a huge THANK YOU to those who are still giving on-line as well as dropping envelopes off at the parish, you are amazing!!! People are also mailing in their contribution to the parish office. Should anyone, at this time need help with on-line giving please call our business manager at (813) 493-3069. This is not a good time nor an easy time for anybody and it is so incredible the generosity you are showing to your parish. Words are never going to express how grateful I am for your continued support as we as a Church also do what we can to pay bills and maintain. During this time where we are still battling to stay healthy, we really need to be grateful for our faith. I really don’t know how people who doubt are getting through this. Which brings us right to St. Thomas who is featured in this weeks Gospel. We read in our Gospel that he doubted that Jesus was alive, and who could blame him – rising from the dead does not normally happen. It was not until he saw Jesus that he then believed. Who would have believed seven months ago that any of us would be experiencing what we are – I know I would not have believed it, yet now it’s a reality. I can’t believe I even feel that I need to broach this, but I have heard it from many. In no way, shape or form has God caused this!!! But He is able to bring about amazing good from unspeakable tragedies. We as a world are given freedom to choose, to be responsible, to watch out for each other, what we are experiencing has happened due to circumstances created by humanity. That being stated, God has been able to do so much, people have stepped up and are helping others, our doctors and first responders have become my hero all over again. God inspires us to do good, gives us the courage and drive to reach out in love for each-other. God is walking with us through this. As the old song goes “He’s got the whole world, in his hands” He still does, and He will see us through. By the way, you’ll be singing that song for days now – your welcome! Finally, the jokes. Where do cows go for entertainment? The Mooo vies! What do you call a bear with no teeth? A gummy bear! Take care, be assured of my prayers! Love, Fr. Mike 2
