I pray these lines find all doing well. All seems well here, kind of back to normal (for whatever is normal these days.) We hear today about the Good Shepherd. Today reminds us that we ARE sheep, please allow me to explain. I have shared this in many a homily, but we need to understand that in the animal kingdom, sheep are natures “D” student!! Don’t get me wrong, I think sheep – all animals are great, but sheep are very stubborn, set in their ways and if left to themselves will make the wrong decisions or very poor choices. I’m hoping this sounds familiar because we human beings have the same propensities, we can be very stubborn, make very bad choices and we certainly are creatures of habit. Even if something is wrong, we will tend to do the same thing over and over. The beauty of Psalm 23 is not just a wonderful poetic psalm but also very telltale in its content. If we were a shepherd, we would understand and pick up on subtleties but if you are like me – it gets lost on us. I will only touch on two aspects of the psalm but all of it is ripe with meaning. One phrase, “He makes me to lie down in green pastures.” Sheep are very skittish and timid animals, for the most part they will not lie down due to fear or being uncomfortable, it is only when they are totally content and protected that they lie down. Sheep have to be inspected all the time for fleas etc. If they are infested, they cannot rest and will not lie down. In regards sheep making wrong decisions, they will eat almost anything, if given a choice they will opt for what is bad for them, an example being dried out and dead grass, yes, they can eat it but there is no nutritional value – green grass keeps them healthy and stronger, a good shepherd will make sure that they eat the good grass. Another phrase, “He leadeth me to running streams.” When left to themselves sheep will drink from old puddles which are ripe with bacteria and parasites which will injure the sheep. Every single day a good shepherd will “water” his sheep by leading them to a running stream or a clean body of water. Even on the way to being watered, sheep will stop and drink at a stagnant puddle, so the shepherd has to be vigilant. How often in our lives do we stay very stubborn, and bull headed, how often do we partake in what we know is simply not good for us. How often do we think, “We know better” and only follow our own self-made path? Getting back to Psalm 23, it is in learning the subtleties like the afore mentioned which help us appreciate the scriptures and our faith all the more and make us grateful that, while we can easily and readily be likened to sheep, we also are guided by a Good Shepherd – the best of all Shepherds, Jesus who guides us and walks us throughout our lives – if we are smart enough to follow! God Bless Your Week! Love, Fr. Mike

FOURTH SUNDAY OF EASTER Faith Formation: We asked that you pray for all our Catechist and Faith Formation Families as today is our last class for 2020/2021. Deacon Matt and I wish to thank all our families that were able to return. Faith begins at home, so we thank you for allowing us to help in your child’s journey in their Faith. We are truly blessed to be a part of that. We also pray for those families that choose to teach their children, themselves, at home. During these times with so much change we are grateful that you took on this role and hope to see your children next year in person. A huge thank you and continued Blessings for all our Catechists. I know many questions came up at the beginning regarding coming back into the classroom for face-to-face classes. Thank you all so much for taking this on and having an awesome year. Without you Incarnation could not have had such a great faith formation year. I am excited to see what next year brings for us and to share your time and talents again. I appreciate and love you all for your help and dedication. I have felt the love and support, from the families and staff here at Incarnation in many ways this year and as we get ready to celebrate Confirmation and Communion, I feel Blessed to be here, working with these great teachers and families. Please pray for our kids celebrating their sacraments, Confirmation (April 28th) and Communion (May 1st). We will be announcing registration for the 2021/2022 Faith Formation Classes in July.
