God is Always With Us In today’s Gospel according to John, Jesus says, “Do not let your hearts be troubled, you have faith in God, have faith also in me.” What is troubling you today? We’ve been going through an extended period where we’ve been dealing with the coronavirus pandemic, in our country and around the world. Certainly, this has caused great fear and great anxiety, and our hearts indeed may be troubled. Jesus says to us, also in the Gospel, that He is the way, the truth and the life - that no one comes to the Father except thorough Him. During times of trouble in our lives, times of fear and anxiety, we can always look to God and to His son Jesus Christ for comfort, knowing that He loves us and that He leads us and guides us through difficult moments. What is it that is troubling your heart today? Perhaps the loss of a job, loss of income, maybe a family member who is sick, or even somebody who has recently passed away. Look to the Lord during this time in your life. Ask Him to bring you peace and comfort in your suffering. Know that He will never abandon you, but will always be close to you, for He told us that He is always close to the broken hearted. When you participate in Mass, look to God and pray to Him for peace and for strength, that you may be able to endure during those difficult moments. -Bishop Gregory Parkes, Diocese of St. Petersburg I pray these lines find all doing well. It is so wonderful to think that we have turned a bit of a corner in-regards to the outbreak losing the impact it once had due to our following the prescribed guidelines. I pray that all you Moms will have a Blessed, wonderful Mother’s Day. I have heard, over the years that one of the greatest gifts a Mom can receive is the gift of having the whole family present – something tells me a lot of Moms are going to receive this gift. Today’s Gospel is one that I am able to recite by heart. One reason for this is because I was the pastor of St. James in Port Richey for twelve years. St. James is a very mature parish – in wisdom and age! We generally had two funerals per week, this being the case I learned all the prayers and all the readings, fist and second by heart. Please know that there are various readings to choose from however, more times than not a family does not know what to choose and so would let the priest choose. When I was first ordained, I had the gift of my parents still with me on this side of reality. During those times I wondered whether or not the readings and my words, at funerals would make the impact the Lord would want from me. In time I lost, first my Mom then my Dad. I used these exact readings for both of my parents and the readings spoke to me and gave me the mind set I needed. However, these readings really came alive for me when one of my dearest friends developed cancer and was given a terminal diagnosis. I remember him coming to me and asking if there was anywhere in the scriptures where it says specifically that Jesus comes and takes us away once we leave this life. Today’s reading was it. He went through his cancer and treatments so bravely but once I gave him this reading it made all the difference, there was a confidence and a sense of peace I had not seen in him before. In all things I pray we hear these words echoed – “Do not let your hearts be troubled – you have faith in God have faith also in me!” After dealing with our present reality I feel that our hearts have in fact been strengthened by our having to endure, and we have! HAPPY MOTHER’S DAY. Have a Blessed Week! -Love, Fr. Mike
