The Most Holy Body & Blood of Christ

June 14, 2020

Corpus Christi Sunday

The Solemnity of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ is this weekend. It’s also known traditionally as Corpus Christi Sunday. The Gospel reading from John’s Gospel finds Jesus addressing the Jewish crowd, “I am the living bread that came down from heaven; whoever eats this bread will live forever; and the bread that I will give is my flesh for the life of the world.” Jesus goes on to say, “unless you eat of the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you do not have life within you.” And, “whoever eats this bread will live forever.” These would have been very powerful, and yet confusing, words from someone whom many considered a teacher or an itinerant preacher that time. Many of the Jews didn’t understand and the Jewish leaders believed it might be blasphemy. Even many of his followers had trouble comprehending what He meant by this. How is it possible that the Eucharist, which we receive when we come to Mass, is truly the body and blood of Jesus? This is a mystery to us that requires the gift of faith. When the priest consecrates the bread and wine during the Mass, there is a substantial change in what those elements are. They may still look and taste like bread and wine, but they have become the body, blood, soul, and divinity of Jesus Christ. He is the living bread that came down from heaven. Do you believe that? And when we receive His body in Communion, Jesus truly dwells within us through His real presence in the gift of the Eucharist. Our response to receiving this gift should be one of gratitude – in our words and through our actions. On this Corpus Christi Sunday, let us give thanks to God for the gift of His Son, Jesus Christ, who died for our sins, and who gives us His body and blood. -Bishop Gregory Parkes Well hello, I pray these lines find all doing well. All is well here – I cannot begin to Thank You all enough for your prayers, thoughts, Mass cards and cards, it is nice to be loved and missed! My surgery went well, all is fine. I am still recovering but hernia surgery is a slow heal in some regards, two examples being I am not allowed to lift more than 10lbs until August, secondly, I am not allowed to exercise – not even walking until August as well. That being the case I am staying away from chocolate more than I would like so as not to reach maximum density. LOL The older I get – the faster time goes so that being the case I’ll be able to get back to regular living before you know it. This weekend will be my first-time celebrating Mass in quite a while, and I can tell you I am really looking forward to it. I cannot Thank Fr. Brian and Fr. Francisco enough, who have been great in maintaining the Masses, especially in getting the parish to the new safety standard. This weekend we celebrate Corpus Christi, The Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ. There is one gift given to each one of us which is really the greatest of all - our faith. It is our faith that helps us receive the gift of the true Body and Blood of our Lord! And while we are presently unable to receive the Blood of Christ at Mass, we need to remember that to receive the Body is to receive the Full complement of our Lord. In our first reading from Deuteronomy we hear about the forty years in the desert. Remember that in Biblical writing and during that time frame forty days was pretty often used to simulate a long time. Today we say, “This is taking forever.” Back then they would say, “this is taking 40 days and 40 nights.” (I love my seminarian/priestly training!!!) That being stated, if you are like me you feel like this covid is taking 40 days and 40 nights to get through, but we ARE getting there. Like our first reading we are all being put to the test and have really been afflicted. But, like those people who knew that God was with them, so we too know God is and always has been with us throughout all of this. May we never forget HE is ever near and walking with us in everything! God Bless Your week!

— Love, Fr. Mike

Deacon Israel Hernandez (Izzie)

Dear Incarnation Catholic Church, My name is Deacon Israel Antonio Hernandez, but everyone calls me Deacon Izzie. I was just ordained to the Order of Deacon on April 25th. My final year of studies was at St. Vincent de Paul Regional Seminary in Boynton Beach, Florida. It is with great honor and excitement that I will be able to serve you this Summer as a deacon. I began on June 1st and will stay until July 31st. I look forward to meeting many of you and getting to know you in the coming weeks. For now, I would like to introduce and say a few things about myself. Although I was born and raised in Tampa, my family is from Puerto Rico. My parents are happily married going on 30 years. I am the youngest of three and the only boy. Family and friends are extremely important to me, for I would not be where I am today without their support. I praise God everyday for this beautiful call to serve his children, the Church. Although I wouldn’t consider myself fluent in Spanish just yet, I can speak, read, and write it to a degree. Growing up, I played a lot of sports, basketball and soccer being my two favorite sports. In the last two years, I have picked up the game of golf, which I find to be the most difficult sport I have ever played. I am a huge fan of superheroes, of which “The Flash” is my favorite. My favorite color is blue, and my favorite food is Macaroni and Cheese. Again, I am super excited and honored to be able to serve you all for the next two months, and who knows, I could be assigned here in the future. As I keep you in my daily prayers, I just ask that you keep my in your prayers as well. God Bless!

Mike
