TWELFTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

June 21, 2020

Live Courageously Fear and trepidation are natural emotions for all of us. Some have a fear of public speaking. All of us at some level may even experience a fear of death. Fear of the unknown is another big one. For me, it’s fear of heights. Kind of ironic for someone who is 6’8”! In this weekend’s gospel from Saint Matthew, we find Jesus exhorting the twelve: “Fear no one.” Jesus was presenting a new way of thinking to the Jews and His followers and some of it was contradictory to traditional ways of thinking. He must have sensed that His disciples might be fearful of sharing these teachings. Yet, He goes on to tell them to proclaim to the housetops, to not whisper in secret, but to speak openly. This had to make some of them a bit fearful and uncomfortable. But isn’t that what Satan wants? Out of fear we keep quiet. We keep silent. The opposite of fear is courage. Courage enables us to overcome our fears. It compels us to do that which we normally would feel uncomfortable doing. We must have the courage to proclaim the truth, to proclaim justice, to spread joy, to foster peace. Jesus is truth and peace; therefore, we are called to proclaim Him to all who might hear. Courage doesn’t always just come; it sometimes has to grow and that comes with understanding. The disciples and martyrs didn’t just give their lives, but did so willingly, trusting in God and knowing of the eternal reward that was to come. They faced their persecutors with courage and conviction. Do we have that same courage in our daily walk? Our vision in the Diocese of St Petersburg is to Courageously Live the Gospel. It is our mission as Catholics, and it is our call from Jesus. Fear no one, but instead live courageously! -Bishop Gregory Parkes

I pray these lines find all doing well. Although we have a way to go yet before we get back to normal, (if totally normal will ever be an option) it seems like things are returning. I want to take this opportunity to wish all the fathers a Happy Father’s Day. This past weekend I was finally able to return to celebrate Mass. I did not realize just how much I missed celebrating with people instead of before a camera. Although the numbers were down in the church due to new regs it really felt great. This weekend we hear Jesus begin the Gospel with very bold and true words “Fear no one!” He then goes on to say how we are all pretty much alike. All of us are sinners, Jesus and the blessed Mother alone are the only humans who have never sinned – and ironically enough they do not judge. The rest of us at times feel that we have the ability to judge when the reality is – we do not. I have heard often in confession that people are angry because, people they know have gotten away with things and nobody knows. This Gospel makes that very clear, everything we have ever done is going to be made known. Those people spoken about in confession get away with nothing – in the end. The saddest part of this whole paragraph is that we should never be looking at nor speaking about the faults of others. Jesus, in another part of scripture, is very clear, “judge and you will be judged – do not judge and you will not be judged.” We should be so concerned about what we have done (even if it was way in our past) that we never have time to nor commit the sin to judge anyone else. Think about it, if you are close to God and you have really cleaned up your life from your past – who do you think did that for you? – God Did!!! He showed you what you were doing, let you know there was another way and you took it. If other people you know are leading a terrible, unholy life then they have not received the gift you have already been given – yet! When we judge others and discuss the faults and lives of others, we are not representing God, we are not His mouthpiece. We are cherished by God, all the hairs on our head have been counted – my scalp is making it easier and easier for God to count, on a daily basis, I wonder what He does with all the free time. LOL You are the only version of you on the planet. You alone have the ability to be the best you can be, we do this by nurturing our relationship with God, by loving only – not judging. We want to acknowledge Jesus so He will acknowledge us. God Bless You -Love, Fr. Mike 2
