THIS SACRED MEAL Today we celebrate the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ. Each of the readings includes a blessing and a sharing of food. They remind us of the central place of meals in our lives. Each meal brings to mind other meals: the sharing of cookies and milk, pizza and beer, loaves and fishes, bread and wine. When we prepare a meal for our family, our friends, even strangers, we always put something of ourselves into the preparation and the meal itself. The Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ reminds us of what God put into the preparation for this meal that we celebrate today. We share this sacred meal and are transformed as we remember the death of Jesus and the sacrifice that nurtures our faith, sustains our lives, and supports our work. TODAY’S READINGS First Reading — Melchizedek brought out bread and wine and blessed Abram (Genesis 14:18-20). Psalm — You are a priest forever, in the line of Melchizedek (Psalm 110). Second Reading — Paul gives his description of the institution of the Eucharist (1 Corinthians 11:23-26). Gospel — Jesus spoke to the crowd about the kingdom of God and then fed them with five loaves and two fish (Luke 9:11b-17).

Rejoice in the resurrection! Thank you to the households that have responded generously to the 2019 Annual Pastoral Appeal. A follow-up message will be going out to those who have not yet made a commitment, with an invitation to be a conscious, active participant in the mission of our Church with a gift to the Annual Pastoral Appeal. If you have not yet made a pledge or gift, please prayerfully consider sharing a portion of the blessings you have received to help to advance our mission of love and mercy in Jesus’ name to uphold God’s kingdom here in our local Church. Every gift is courageous, no gift is too small and each gift changes a life. You can make a one-time gift, or you can pledge an amount that is payable over 10 months. Our parish wants and needs your active participation and support.

You are still the Master of land and sea. We live in the shadow of a danger over which we have no control: the Gulf, like a provoked and angry giant, can awake from its seeming lethargy, overstep its conventional boundaries, invade our land, and spread chaos and disaster. During this hurricane season we turn to You, O loving Father. Spare us from past Tragedies whose memories are still so vivid and whose wounds seem to refuse to heal with passing of time. O Virgin, Star of the Sea, Our beloved Mother, we ask you to Plead with your Son on our behalf, so that spared from the calamities common to this area and animated with a true spirit of gratitude, we will walk in the footsteps of your Divine Son to reach the heavenly Jerusalem, where stormless eternity awaits us. Amen. 4
