SEVENTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

Being a “good fish”

Once again, this weekend Jesus uses parables to try to teach His disciples something very important – in this case, about the Kingdom of Heaven. He says the Kingdom of Heaven is like a treasure buried in a field, or like a merchant searching for fine pearls, or like a fisherman who casts his net not knowing what he will catch – both good and bad. The main point that our Lord is trying to teach His disciples and us, is that the Kingdom of Heaven is something very valuable, something that we should be willing to give all that we have to possess, and something that should not be taken for granted. If I were to ask you, “Do you want to go to heaven”? Most people, I hope, would reply “yes, I want to go to heaven when I die”. If I were to ask you, “Do you think you’ll make it”? Probably, most people would respond, “I hope so”. We know that the life of heaven is not something that we can earn on our own or that we deserve. Ultimately, each one of us is a sinner, and each one of us is dependent on God’s love and mercy to reach heaven. We also know that God created us to know Him, to love Him, and to serve Him in this world, and to be with Him in the next. But we should never take God’s benevolence and his mercy for granted. There was a period in history when people only went to Confession one time in their lives…at the end of their life before they died. The thought was that this gave them the best chance to reach heaven with a clean conscience. We now know that our Lord gave us the Sacrament of Reconciliation to be used not only at the end of our lives, but whenever we stumble and fall and need His forgiveness. Our lives are a continual process of growing in spiritual maturity and doing our best to prepare ourselves for the day when we will be judged by God for what we did, and what we failed to do. In the parable today, we desire to be the “good fish” who are separated from the bad and kept. If it’s been awhile since you’ve been to Confession or to Mass, visit one of our parishes. July 26, 2020 I pray that these lines find all doing well and continuing to stay healthy. To the best of my knowledge all is fine here at the parish, all seem to be staying happy and healthy. This weekend is the last weekend that Deacon Izzy will be with us. Although it has been quite the rollercoaster ride with being quarantined and being so limited with activities it really has been great having him here with us. He will make a wonderful priest and we as a parish have the “brag-ability” that we were a part of his journey to the priesthood. Deacon Izzy, please know that you will continue to be in our thoughts and prayers. The Lord is gonna do amazing Deacon Izzy things through you and you always have a home here at Incarnation Parish. In today’s Gospel, Jesus speaks about the kingdom of Heaven and what it can be likened to, and while we are able to relate to what is being stated I would like to go off on a tangent – which is not like me at all -RIGHT!!! In one of my former parishes I was speaking with a young lady who had a concern about Heaven. She saw a far-side cartoon and the image was simply titled heaven. The picture showed people with angel wings and halos sitting or rather slumping on individual clouds – bored out of their minds. I think there are some people who feel like – “What if this is all there is to Heaven?” Please be assured that the image portrayed is nothing like our Eternal Reward. Jesus tells us in another part of Scripture that eye has not seen, and ear has not heard, nor has it so much as dawned on man what God has ready for those who love Him. That being stated let’s do a little exercise; Picture what Heaven would be for you, don’t hold back, go crazy, whatever you think. Know that is going to be sooo much better than what you have imagined because Jesus says specifically – nor has it so much as dawned on man what God has ready for us – we do not have the resources nor the mental ability to comprehend what God has prepared for us. That being stated why would anyone look to anything else other than God who walks with us, loves us throughout this life and surrounds us with things more than wonderful in the life to come! Have a Great Week! -Love, Fr. Mike

TODAY’S READINGS First Reading — Solomon prays for an understanding heart (1 Kings 3:5, 7-12). Psalm — Lord, I love your commands (Psalm 119). Everyone must use main entrance and follow the instructions of the ushers. Please be patient. The side doors are ONLY emergency exits. Incarnation is limited to a maximum seating of 128 due to social distancing. They are marked by green crosses. Once we reach 128 people there will be no more permitted to enter. People who live in the same home may sit together. Ushers will greet each person and show them to their seat. In order to properly disinfect after each Mass, the Sunday schedule will be:

Saturday 4:00 pm Sunday 7am, 9am & 11am, Spanish at 1pm Please limit private prayer after mass to no longer than 5 minutes so our volunteers can properly disinfect the church. The chapel and cry room will remain closed. There will be a collection basket at the entrance. No basket will be passed around and there will be no basket bearers. Hand sanitizer dispensers are in the Narthex as you enter and leave. No holding hands at Our Father and no contact peace.

Farewell Incarnation

It has been a bittersweet summer for me. Bitter because I am leaving without getting to know any of the wonderful families that I have seen in the pews. Bitter because I will no longer be living with the wonderful priests that your community has the privilege of being shepherded by. Bitter because I will no longer get to serve on the altar as a Deacon. Bitter because I will no longer be putting you to sleep with my preaching. For each of you, that is probably a plus to me leaving. Sweet because I was able serve your beautiful community as a newly ordained Deacon. In being a new Deacon, I had the opportunity to preach to you on multiple occasions, whether it be Sunday Mass or Tuesday and Thursday daily Mass. I was even given the opportunity to baptize real children. This may sound absurd to you, but its true. In seminary, when we learn to baptize, we use this famous baby doll, which has probably been baptized over millions of times by now. So yes, it has been a bittersweet summer for me. However, I look forward to one day serving this Diocese, and who knows, serving here at Incarnation in the near future. Anything is possible. As I leave here, I leave you with one thing to pray with. Because of all the division being created within our country, I ask you to pray about how you can help create an atmosphere of unity, equality, mercy, and love. It all starts at your homes and extends from there. Open yourself up to God, allowing the Spirit to guide you, Jesus to teach you, and the Father to pour out his infinite, selfless, unifying love.
