20th SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

AUGUST 16, 2020 I pray these lines find all doing well. Things here are pretty much the same. I really pray that our current situation of donning the mask does not become the new norm. Masks are for creating sterile environments for medical professionals and for super-heroes not the norm of life – at least I hope not.

Lord, Give Us Grace

As people in a society that judges others by looks, social status, money and much more, it’s notable that in the Gospel of Matthew this weekend, we find Jesus healing a Canaanite woman. The many stories of Jesus’ encounters with people are often with those who many would judge to be on the fringes of society, sinners, outcasts, criminals, foreigners, and even corrupt government and temple officials. He does this to challenge the authority of the day, and to create a new way of thinking and encountering others. Canaanites were pagans for the most part. Yet, this woman cries out, “Lord, Son of David, help me”. She recognizes the divinity of Christ and addresses Him as such. She wanted nothing more than to free her daughter from torment from a demon. Jesus took the opportunity to show that His saving works were not only for the Jews, but for all people regardless of their nationality, belief, or unbelief. The woman showed faith, earnestly and unceasingly praying, and Jesus answered her prayer. He said to her, “O woman, great is your faith, let it be done for you as you wish,” and her daughter was healed. Let this serve as a lesson for us that unceasing and persistent prayer is powerful and is answered. It may not be the answer we want, but we trust that it is the will of God. Today more than ever our families, our churches, our nation and our world need prayer…prayers of healing, prayers for peace, prayers for love of our fellow man regardless of skin color, nationality, politics, faith, or past action. Today we pray, “Lord give us the grace to open our hearts to bring healing and compassion to all”. Bishop Gregory Parkes Confessions Every Saturday From 2:30 - 3:30pm

Today Jesus teaches his disciples a valuable lesson through an encounter with a Canaanite woman in need. The need is not for her directly but for her daughter who is tormented by a demon. The disciples are learning something new, not their fault they were just a product of their environment of the normal thought process at that time. People of religious faiths did not inter-mingle and a Rabbi ministered to the Jewish people only. This woman realized that what she was doing was not appropriate to that time, but two things propelled her into this act – her love for her daughter and her faith and confidence that Jesus could cure her daughter. Jesus, in curing the girl, gives a very clear sign to the crowd and especially to His disciples that God’s love and power is available to anyone who has faith. Jesus says to the woman a phrase which is one of the greatest lines anyone could ever hear from Jesus Himself “Great is your faith.” This line also reminds us of another truth – it is our faith and the amount we choose to bring to a situation that Jesus will work with. Jesus has total un-limitless power to do whatever He desires but He is not going to force Himself upon us, he chooses to need our faith and the amount we bring to a situation. This Canaanite woman had the faith necessary for Jesus to act. How is our faith, and where is our faith? I pray it is in Jesus alone! Have a great week! Love, Fr. Mike

Prayer for Protection against Storms & Hurricanes O God, Master of this passing world, hear the humble voices of your children. The Sea of Galilee obeyed Your order and returned to its former quietude. You are still the Master of land and sea. We live in the shadow of a danger over which we have no control: the Gulf, like a provoked and angry giant, can awake from its seeming lethargy, overstep its conventional boundaries, invade our land, and spread chaos and disaster. During this hurricane season we turn to You, O loving Father. Spare us from past tragedies whose memories are still so vivid and whose wounds seem to refuse to heal with passing of time. O Virgin, Star of the Sea, Our beloved Mother, we ask you to Plead with your Son on our behalf, so that spared from the calamities common to this area and animated with a true spirit of gratitude, we will walk in the footsteps of your Divine Son to reach the heavenly Jerusalem, where stormless eternity awaits us. Amen. PRAYER FOR HEALTH CARE WORKERS God of everlasting goodness, you sent your Son among us to bring healing, peace, and reconciliation to our weary world. Be with all health care workers and their assistants in this time of the Coronavirus pandemic. As they continue Jesus’ ministry of care, renew them in mind, body, and spirit. Keep them safe from infection and illness, and may Christ’s healing presence flow through Them as they serve those entrusted to their care. We ask this in His name, Christ the healer, who is Lord forever and ever. Amen.

Señor, danos la gracia

9

Padre Mike
