21st SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
AUGUST 23,2020
Do You Know Who Jesus Is? Do you care what people think of you? Many people are concerned about the way they’re perceived by others. This can certainly be true for the way we’re viewed by our neighbors, our co-workers, and for teens who are trying to fit in with their peers. Generally, we want others to think of us in a good light and not define us by our weaknesses, failures, or faults. In this weekend’s Gospel, we read the account in Matthew’s Gospel, of Jesus asking His disciples two questions about identity and perception. The first question is, “Who do people say that the son of Man is?” And the second is, “But who do you say that I am?” Was our Lord asking Peter this just to satisfy His own ego? Was He checking to see if His message and ministry were effective? The disciples had already witnessed many miracles and learned much from Him. The truth is that He probably didn’t care so much about what the religious leaders or general public was saying about Him. He wanted an answer from the twelve – His closest followers. Peter immediately proclaims, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.” Jesus desires believers who know Him and that will publicly and without reservation proclaim that He is Lord and Master. By witnessing the miraculous events up to this point, the disciples came to believe. But Jesus reminds them that this was revealed to them by God. Despite some possible hesitation by some in the group, Peter had the courage to proclaim this truth. What if Jesus were to ask you the question, “Who do you say that I am”? Or, if someone were to ask you who Jesus Christ is to you, how would you respond? Would it be an answer based on facts, for example, that He was born in Bethlehem, that Joseph and Mary were His parents, that He was raised in the Jewish faith and traditions. Or would you be able to speak about the difference that your relationship with Jesus Christ has made in your life? Would you be able to proclaim Him as your Savior? Each time we come to Mass, it’s an opportunity to come to know better who Jesus Christ is. Bishop Gregory Parkes Confessions Every Saturday From 2:30 - 3:30pm

I pray these lines find you all doing well. Things are well here; I want to say it feels a little like things are getting back to normal, but I think I am in denial. LOL, I think the situation is just that we are growing so accustomed to this new way of living, it seems normal. Today a great question is asked by Jesus – “Who do people say that I am?” This is one of those times when Peter gets it right but there is a very exacting reason why Peter answered correctly. Jesus tells him, my (Jesus’) Heavenly Father has revealed this to you. In order for Peter to have answered correctly He listened to God the Father speak within him. Peter spoke out loud what God the Father put into his heart. In order for this to have happened we know that Peter gave God “a window”, Peter was silent and listened for God to speak. God then gave Peter the answer Jesus was looking for. We just heard a few weeks ago that God, when He communicates, is in the tiny whisper, not thunder, not fire nor earthquakes. Simply put – do we give God “a window?” Do we even know God when He speaks? Would we know His voice when He does place an answer within our hearts? Listening in today’s world is not popular, to turn off all the noise both interiorly as well as exteriorly is not easy but this is how God chooses to speak with us. Absolutely nothing else in the world is more important than communicating with our Creator. If we have not worked on this in the past there is no time like the present. If you give God the space and the quiet He will communicate – I promise! Have a great week! Love, Fr. Mike

Prayer for Protection against Storms & Hurricanes O God, Master of this passing world, hear the humble voices of your children. The Sea of Galilee obeyed Your order and returned to its former quietude. You are still the Master of land and sea. We live in the shadow of a danger over which we have no control: the Gulf, like a provoked and angry giant, can awake from its seeming lethargy, overstep its conventional boundaries, invade our land, and spread chaos and disaster. During this hurricane season we turn to You, O loving Father. Spare us from past tragedies whose memories are still so vivid and whose wounds seem to refuse to heal with passing of time. O Virgin, Star of the Sea, Our beloved Mother, we ask you to Plead with your Son on our behalf, so that spared from the calamities common to this area and animated with a true spirit of gratitude, we will walk in the footsteps of your Divine Son to reach the heavenly Jerusalem, where stormless eternity awaits us. Amen. PRAYER FOR HEALTH CARE WORKERS God of everlasting goodness, you sent your Son among us to bring healing, peace, and reconciliation to our weary world. Be with all health care workers and their assistants in this time of the Coronavirus pandemic. As they continue Jesus’ ministry of care, renew them in mind, body, and spirit. Keep them safe from infection and illness, and may Christ’s healing presence flow through Them as they serve those entrusted to their care. We ask this in His name, Christ the healer, who is Lord forever and ever. Amen.

LECTURAS DE LA SEMANA Ap 21:9b-14; Sal 145 (144):10-13, 17-18; Jn 1:45-51 2 Tes 2:1-3a, 14-17; Sal 96 (95):10-13; Mt 23:23-26 2 Tes 3:6-10, 16-18; Sal 124 (123):1-2, 4-5; Mt 23:27-32 1 Cor 1:1-9; Sal 145 (144):2-7; Mt 24:42-51 1 Cor 1:17-25; Sal 33 (32):1-2, 4-5, 10-11; Mt 25:14 -30 1 Cor 1:26-31; Sal 33 (32):12-13, 18-21; Mc 6:17-29 Jer 20:7-9; Sal 63 (62):2-6, 8-9; Rom 12:1-2; Mt 16:2127
Padre Mike
