22nd SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

AUGUST 30,2020

Uniting Our Suffering with Jesus’ Suffering

None of us ever wants to see someone we love to have to suffer, and certainly, the thought of our loved ones dying one day can cause us sadness and grief, or even denial. Therefore, we shouldn’t be surprised at Peter’s reaction to Jesus’ statement in today’s Gospel that He would have to suffer and would be killed. To this Peter responds, “God forbid, Lord! No such thing shall ever happen to you.” What may surprise us, however, is Jesus’ reaction to what Peter said as He responds to Peter, “Get behind me Satan! You are an obstacle to me!” Why did our Lord react in such a strong manner? He did so to teach His disciples and us that suffering and death is part of life, and in the case of Jesus, that it was necessary that it happen to fulfill God’s plan for salvation and the forgiveness of our sins. Jesus, who did nothing but love, and heal, and show compassion for others, suffered, and died that we might have life – eternal life. He also wanted to teach us that being a Christian – a follower and believer of His – would also entail suffering and persecution. We are often called to bear many crosses in our lives whether they be physical, emotional, or even financial. Jesus Christ strengthens us to be able to take up these crosses and follow Him in faith. The Saints of our faith provide a wonderful example of people who endured great suffering, and for many, even death because of their faith. That’s why we pray for their intercession in helping us to during our times of trial. Do we have the courage to take up our crosses and follow Jesus? An important aspect of our faith is that we can unite our suffering with that of Jesus Christ. This gives meaning to our suffering and allows us to offer it up for some good for ourselves or others. Do you believe this? Bishop Gregory Parkes

I pray these lines find all doing well. All is going well here at home base. We had some wonderful – overdue celebrations of first Holy Communion for our second – now third graders. They have waited for so long to receive the Eucharist and they finally have received what they have waited their whole lives for. Almost without fail our young people who are too young to receive come to the Eucharistic minister with their arms folded in front of them. At some point during the blessing they usually try to look into the ciborium at the Eucharist, the whole family is receiving, and they wish to partake as well. The children are so happy when, like their parents – they can receive. These children this year have waited so long but now they are receiving, and we are glad and proud that they have joined us. Today in our Gospel, in the accounting of St. Peter, it was a swing and a miss! Poor St. Peter must have felt like the rug was pulled right out from under him. Jesus just told His that He was going to be handed over and killed. I think St. Peter said what any one of us would have said because he loved Jesus and did not want this to happen. And where I know that Jesus on some level loved the response, at the same time He was trying to fulfill His Heavenly Father’s will (and succeeding, by the way). He was wrapping His head around dealing with His upcoming death. What we learn from this is reminiscent of a line from a movie, ‘Sometimes the right path is not always the easiest one.” What is so important to remember is that God has a plan for our lives, and it is always for good but there is no guarantee that the steps along the way will not be rough and at times painful. Jesus alludes to this in the carrying of our individual crosses, which we have already been doing. Life is not easy, and stresses are going to occur, an example being one we all presently share – this virus. Regardless of how we are going through this it is not easy, it takes up our attention and is always in the corners of our mind. We do not know how long Jesus knew when he would be crucified but it is obviously before this point. He followed His Father’s will – we are called to do the same. Have a great week. Love, Fr. Mike

There are masses available in the upcoming weeks. If you would like to reserve a mass, contact Irene Martinez by email at secretary@icctampa.org or call the parish office. 2

Prayer for Protection against Storms & Hurricanes O God, Master of this passing world, hear the humble voices of your children. The Sea of Galilee obeyed Your order and returned to its former quietude. You are still the Master of land and sea. We live in the shadow of a danger over which we have no control: the Gulf, like a provoked and angry giant, can awake from its seeming lethargy, overstep its conventional boundaries, invade our land, and spread chaos and disaster. During this hurricane season we turn to You, O loving Father. Spare us from past tragedies whose memories are still so vivid and whose wounds seem to refuse to heal with passing of time. O Virgin, Star of the Sea, Our beloved Mother, we ask you to Plead with your Son on our behalf, so that spared from the calamities common to this area and animated with a true spirit of gratitude, we will walk in the footsteps of your Divine Son to reach the heavenly Jerusalem, where stormless eternity awaits us. Amen. PRAYER FOR HEALTH CARE WORKERS God of everlasting goodness, you sent your Son among us to bring healing, peace, and reconciliation to our weary world. Be with all health care workers and their assistants in this time of the Coronavirus pandemic. As they continue Jesus’ ministry of care, renew them in mind, body, and spirit. Keep them safe from infection and illness, and may Christ’s healing presence flow through Them as they serve those entrusted to their care. We ask this in His name, Christ the healer, who is Lord forever and ever. Amen.
