24th SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME Forgive Others the Way God Forgives Us “Peter approached Jesus and asked him, ‘Lord, if my brother sins against me, how often must I forgive? As many as seven times?” Jesus answered, ‘I say to you, not seven times but seventy-seven times.’” – Matthew 18: 21-22 “Forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us.” We pray these words each time that we pray the Our Father at Mass and during our own personal prayer time. We know the words, but do we grasp the significance of what we’re praying? In essence, we’re asking God to use the same standard of forgiveness towards us as we use towards others who ask for our forgiveness. Do we really mean that? I like to think that I’m a forgiving person, but I know I’m not perfect in that area and it’s something I need to aware of. That’s why those words from the Our Father should catch our attention. This weekend’s Gospel from St. Matthew talks about forgiveness. We hear about the master who forgave his servant who owed a great debt and was unable to repay. The servant was about to lose everything, but he begged forgiveness from the master who, moved with compassion, forgave the debt. Later, that same servant showed no compassion toward a fellow servant who owed him much less. The master found out about this and handed him over to the torturers until he satisfied his debt. Jesus used this example to show us that God the Father is compassionate, merciful, slow to anger and quick to forgive. But we must be open to His mercy and mirror that mercy and forgiveness in our own lives towards others. If God is infinitely merciful with us, shouldn’t we also be forgiving with our family members, coworkers, neighbors or even a stranger? And not just to say the words, “I forgive you”, but to really mean it “from your heart” as the Gospel says. Are you still holding on to a grudge or situation that happened weeks, years or even decades ago? Is there someone who you’ve been unable to forgive? While someone may never ask for forgiveness for the way they hurt you, that doesn’t prevent us from forgiving them from the heart. Forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us. Bishop Gregory Parkes

SEPTEMBER 13,2020 I pray that all are doing well. All is fine here at the parish, just getting used to our “new norm” praying it will soon be over. Today has to be one of my all-time favorite Gospels. Jesus is amazingly clear in His message; you will not be forgiven if you do not forgive. People do not like to hear that, or they tweak it a little, thinking that there are provisos or certain situations when it is OK not to forgive and not to let go. This is never the case which is why Jesus addresses the situation in the first place. We need to begin to understand this reading by taking a really good look at ourselves, we need to go back and look at what we have done in our lives, the bad as well as the good. God, in reconciliation, has forgiven us for what we have done, and we don’t deserve that forgiveness but that is the beauty of our God – He is always quick to forgive. Please know that I understand, some people have been through some horrendous things. People have been through, evil, tragic acts but remember that God is the judge – not us. They will receive what God has ready for them. When we do not forgive we put up a wall over our feelings and emotions, this wall keeps out the totality of God’s love and mercy and it even clouds the love that we have for everyone else in our lives. Non forgiveness is a cancer that will eventually do unrepairable damage. Now, that being stated, God can and does heal anything, but He needs us to begin to forgive the individual or situation before the healing can begin. Once we do this God will then heal and restore that joy and freedom we were always meant to enjoy. God Bless You, -Love, Fr. Mike

LECTURAS DE LA SEMANA Lunes: Nm 21:4b-9; Sal 78 (77):1-2, 34-38; Flm 2:6-11; Jn 3:13-17 Martes: 1 Cor 12:12-14, 27-31a; Sal 100 (99):1b-5; Jn 19:25-27 o Lc 2:33-35 Miércoles: 1 Cor 12:31 — 13:13; Sal 33 (32):2-5, 12, 22; Lc 7:31-35 Jueves: 1 Cor 15:1-11; Sal 118 (117):1b-2, 16ab-17, 28; Lc 7:36-50 Viernes: 1 Cor 15:12-20; Sal 17 (16):1bcd, 6-8b, 15; Lc 8:1-3 Sábado: 1 Cor 15:35-37, 42-49; Sal 56 (55):10c-14; Lc 8:4-15 Domingo: Is 55:6-9; Sal 145 (144):2-3, 8-9, 17-18; Flm 1:20c-24, 27a; Mt 20:1-16a

¿Hay alguien a quien no has podido perdonar?
