I pray these lines find all doing well. I have learned that everyone is getting quite the pumpkin education. The craziest pumpkin flavored item (for me) must be, pumpkin spam. I must admit I have not tried it, don’t know that I will, but I heard it’s really good. I am going to take their word for it. LOL Today we are called to be full of something and its not pumpkin, it’s Faith and yet Jesus tells us that if we had faith the size of a mustard seed, we would be able to accomplish amazing things. See, faith in its pure form is amazingly powerful because it contains no doubt whatsoever. This is obviously the faith of Jesus and it can be our faith as well. I want to share with you a story I have used in daily homilies. A true story of this young lady in her thirties who has the thought process of a seven-year-old. Her care taker told me that when they pray together, she prays for something once no matter how small or how tragic, she will never pray for something a second time. The care taker asked the young lady why only once, her profound response was “I know God heard me and He WILL take care if it.” And you know, she is absolutely correct. This young lady has pure faith. How often do we as adults pray for something day after day, over and over again, like somehow God did not hear us the first time or somehow, we will change God’s mind- absolutely ridiculous but it is what we do. Now, allow me a caveat. When we pray to God we talk from the heart about our hopes and desires, our fears and our dilemmas just like we do with our other loved ones, so it’s not like you will never mention it again to our Lord, but we do need only ask once – knowing He heard us the first time. God Bless You! Love, Fr. Mike

TODAY’S READINGS First Reading — The just ones, because of their faith, shall live (Habakkuk 1:2-3; 2:2-4). Psalm — If today you hear his voice, harden not your hearts (Psalm 95). Second Reading — Bear hardship with the strength that comes from God (2 Timothy 1:6-8, 13-14). Gospel — The apostles said to Jesus, “Increase our faith” (Luke 17:5 -10). READINGS FOR THE WEEK Monday: Jon 1:1 — 2:2, 11; Jon 2:3-5, 8; Lk 10:25-37 Tuesday: Jon 3:1-10; Ps 130:1b-4ab, 7-8; Lk 10:38-42 Wednesday: Jon 4:1-11; Ps 86:36, 9-10; Lk 11:1-4 Thursday: Mal 3:13-20b; Ps 1:14, 6; Lk 11:5-13 Friday: Jl 1:13-15; 2:1-2; Ps 9:2-3, 6, 16, 8-9; Lk 11:15-26 Saturday: Jl 4:12-21; Ps 97:1-2, 5-6, 11-12; Lk 11:27-28 Sunday: 2 Kgs 5:14-17; Ps 98:1-4; 2 Tm 2:8-13; Lk 17:11-19

Diocese of St. Petersburg Donates $250,000 for Hurricane Dorian Relief in the Bahamas On September 25, 2019, Bishop Gregory Parkes issued a check in the amount of $250,000 to provide support to the victims of Hurricane Dorian in the Bahamas. The check was mailed to Archbishop Patrick Pinder of the Archdiocese of Nassau for the specific purpose of relief and recovery efforts in the Bahamas following the devastating effects of the storm. “Our people are very generous here in the Diocese of St. Petersburg. Whenever we put out a call or invitation to give for disaster relief, our faithful always respond. Because of their generosity, we are able to assist hurricane recovery efforts and emergency needs in the Bahamas,” said Bishop Parkes. The Archdiocese of Nassau encompasses all of the islands of the Bahamas, including the Abaco islands, which suffered the greatest impact from Dorian.

27th SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

Respect Life Reflection Christ Our Hope: In Every Season of Life From the time we are knit together in our mothers’ wombs until we take our final breaths, each moment of our lives is a gift from God. While every season of life brings its own challenges and trials, each season also gives us new opportunities to grow in our relationship with God. Today the gift of life is threatened in countless ways. Those who are most vulnerable, rather than receiving the protection they deserve, are all too often seen as a burden and as expendable. As new attacks on human life continue to emerge, we can be tempted to despair, but Christ instead offers us unfailing hope. Hope is not false optimism or empty positivity. Christian hope is something much more profound and goes to the very depths of our identity as followers of Christ. Hope is the virtue “by which we desire the kingdom of heaven and eternal life as our happiness, placing our trust in Christ's promises and relying not on our own strength, but on the help of the grace of the Holy Spirit” (CCC, 1817). Like us, Christ entered the world through the womb of a woman. He willingly experienced the fullness of human suffering. He breathed his last on the Cross at Calvary in order that He might save us. Therefore, “God is the foundation of hope: not any god, but the God who has a human face and who has loved us to the end” (Spe salvi 31). Christians know “they have a future: it is not that they know the details of what awaits them, but they know in general terms that their life will not end in emptiness” (SS 2). For this reason, a woman experiencing a difficult pregnancy can find the strength to welcome her precious child into the world. A man facing a terminal diagnosis can see that the end of his earthly life is only the beginning of eternal life with Christ. The Church teaches us that “the one who has hope lives differently” (SS 2). Christ’s promise of salvation does not mean that we will be spared from suffering. Rather, the promise of salvation ensures that even in the darkest moments of our lives, we will be given the strength to persevere. By virtue of this Christian hope, we can face any challenge or trial. When the seas of life swell and we are battered by the waves, hope allows us to remain anchored in the heart of God. May we hold fast to Christ our hope, from the beginning of life to its very end.

“Hold fast to the hope that lies before us. This we have as an anchor of the soul, sure and firm.” Hebrews 6:18-19

(Lucas 17:5-10).
