Give God what is His
"Then repay to Caesar what belongs to Caesar and to God what belongs to God." – Matthew 22:21 In God We Trust. Four words that many take for granted. Based on our Gospel reading this weekend from Matthew, it seems ironic that these words appear on our currency. In the reading, we find the Pharisees once again plotting to trap our Lord, and thus, get Him into trouble with government officials and even the faithful Jewish community. First, they try to flatter Him with compliments, then ask a question about paying government taxes. He answers their question with a question, “Whose image is this and whose inscription?” as He looks at the Roman coin. They answer, “Caesar’s”. He then said, “then repay what belongs to Caesar, and to God what belongs to God.” The pharisees had no response as they were surprised at the answer. Jesus separates the two parties: the civil and the spiritual. He recognizes and acknowledges that government and fair taxes are necessary for and ordered society and to keep things running. Yet, the lesson is that God is the ultimate ruler of all things, not a president, emperor, dictator, prime minister, or leader. God makes all things possible. The founding fathers of our country used words like “so help me God” in the presidential oath. But, it wasn’t until the mid1900s that the nation began putting “in God we trust” on coins and adopting the phrase as the national motto. Now more than ever, we must put our trust in God to guide our nation and bring peace to our divisions. We pay taxes to the government, but we are called to give our hearts and souls to God. The unfortunate reality is that many people have an easier time paying taxes to the government than opening their hearts to the Lord. Pray for the strength to give God what is His – your mind, body, and soul. -Bishop Gregory Parkes
TODAY IS WORLD MISSION SUNDAY. We celebrate this day by remembering our baptismal call – to bring the Gospel to all! The collection today for the Society for the Propagation of the Faith supports the work and witness of the Mission Church, as it provides for priests, religious and lay leaders who offer the Lord’s mercy and concrete help to the most vulnerable communities in the Pope’s missions. Thank you for your generosity.

OCTOBER 18, 2020 Did you know… + Did you know we now have seven new seminarians for our diocese thanks to the innovative work of our Vocations Office? From discernment events via Zoom Chats with seminarians to livestreaming Ordination for our three new priests, the Vocations Office has opened-up some creative ways to bring ministry to life! + Did you know Catholic Charities maintained their services at Pinellas Hope and Mercy House throughout the shutdowns, and added a completely new facility in collaboration with the City of Tampa and Hillsborough County to provide services for homeless in downtown Tampa? Altogether, they served over 93,000 meals over the last year, and are now working on a permanent Hillsborough Hope location to continue serving this underserved population. + Did you know that with little time to spare, the Office of Youth and Young Adult Ministry transitioned the Good Samaritan Project from a week-long, overnight service based retreat to a hybrid event with both online and in-person components that stayed true to the program’s mission? 2020’s offering of the program was still a week -long event, in which 10 parishes, more than 150 teens, 50 adult chaperones, and 25 college student leaders participated in service projects, spiritual formation and community building. In addition, this new format allowed for 500 more people to view and share skits, listen to talks, and participate in prayer remotely. And these are just a few of the changes made to ensure the outreach of our larger Church continues. Take a few moments to see how our diocesan ministers have taken a time of great challenge and turned it into a time of great blessings. Visit www.dosp.org/2020ministryupdate to learn more about this and other ministries supported through the Annual Pastoral Appeal, and make your gift today! FAITH,HOPE & COURAGE COMMITMENT CARDS Intentions from the FAITH, HOPE & COURAGE commitment cards will be included along with the Prayers of the Faithful at each weekend Mass for the of OCTOBER . COMMITMENT CARDS are placed in the back of the church. After each Mass on the weekend.
