Love Your Neighbor “You shall love the Lord, your God, with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind. This is the greatest and the first commandment. The second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself.”- Matthew 22:37-39 People are fascinated with top 10 lists. David Letterman, the former late night tv host, was famous for his nightly top 10 lists. Today we pay great attention to the college football rankings. What are the top 5 greatest vacation destinations? What’s the top-rated restaurant in the area? Everyone wants to know what is considered the best. A “greatest” question is posed to our Lord in this weekend’s Gospel from Saint Matthew. One of the Pharisees asks Him, “which commandment in the law is the greatest?” We remember that God gave Moses a top 10 list in the form of the Ten Commandments, yet here is Jesus being tested again on His opinion of which one is number one. Jesus deviates a bit from the 10 by saying, “You shall love the Lord with all your heart, with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the greatest and first commandment.” He rephrased it differently than the traditional “you shall have no other gods.” He goes on, “The second is like it: you shall love your neighbor as yourself. The whole law and prophets depend on these two commandments.” Jesus understands the human condition that we are often selfish creatures - putting our needs above those of others. Yet, here He is saying, love your neighbor and put his needs on the same level as your own. You’ve heard the saying, “there is no greater love than to give one’s life for one’s friends.” This is what we are called to do. This is the pure sacrificial love. But you cannot attain that kind of love without loving God with all your mind, heart, and soul. God sacrificed His son for you and me out of His great love for us. But do we have the courage to stand up for the neighbor who is weak, who is pushed aside by society, who is forgotten, who is persecuted, who is different than you or I? The foundation of our personal faith is based on these two commandments, to love God with our whole being and to love our neighbor as we love ourselves. Do you have a strong foundation of faith in your life? If you don’t, find strength in the Lord. -Bishop Gregory Parkes

THE LIFE OF FATHER MICHAEL JOSEPH McGIVNEY, FOUNDER OF THE KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS, WHO WILL BE BEATIFIED ON OCTOBER 31, 2020.
STORY OF THE MAN Michael Joseph McGivney was born in Waterbury, Conn., on August 12, 1852, the first child of Patrick and Mary (Lynch) McGivney. His parents came to the United States in the great 19th-century wave of Irish immigration and were married in Waterbury. Life was not easy, especially for Catholic immigrant families who often faced prejudice, social exclusion, and financial and social disadvantages. Young Michael thus experienced from an early age grief, anti-Catholic bigotry and poverty. But his faith sustained him. At home and in church, he learned and embraced love, faith, fortitude, prayer and putting love of God above any earthly rewards. In 1868, 16-year-old Michael left home to pursue God’s call to the priesthood. On December 22, 1877, Michael was ordained and a few days later, Father Michael J. McGivney celebrated his first public Mass. Father McGivney was assigned as curate (assistant) of St. Mary's Church, the first Catholic parish in the busy port city of New Haven. There he faced challenges related to a priest shortage, parish debt, illnesses, and hostility toward Catholics. Father McGivney navigated relationships with non-Catholics gracefully, while striving to prevent the culture’s hostility from eroding the faith of his people. While his first concern was always the faith of his flock, he was attuned to familial, social, financial, civic and societal issues as well. Intent on building a dynamic parish for his hard-working and largely poor flock, he staged parish plays, outings and fairs, and he revitalized a group dedicated to overcoming alcoholism within his community. A man of strategic vision, Father McGivney designed a way to strengthen the Catholic faith of men and their families while providing financial protection when they suffered the death of the breadwinner. He well knew that keeping families together assisted both temporal and spiritual needs. This led him to findThe Knights of Columbus, a fraternal organization for Catholic Men in 1882. The new group was named for Christopher Columbus, esteemed at the time as the heroic discoverer of the New World and noted for highlighting the deep roots of Catholics in America. The Civil War vets were in favor of Knights as a sign of strength and loyalty. The Order’s original principles were unity and charity. “Unity in order to gain strength to be Charitable to each other in benevolence whilst we live and in bestowing financial aid to those whom we have to mourn”. Principles of fraternity and patriotism were added later. Father McGivney was elected to be head of the new Order but two years later, when operations were on a sound footing, Father McGivney resigned his executive post to become supreme chaplain, explaining that his first obligation to the Order was to serve as a priest. Never robust in health, Father McGivney fell ill with tuberculosis and was stricken with severe pneumonia in January 1890. He died on August 14,1890 two days past his 38th birthday. Today, the earthly remains of Father McGivney are interred in a polished sarcophagus in New Haven’s St. Mary’s Church, where he founded the Knights of Columbus. His vision and mission are carried forth by nearly 2 million Knights of Columbus throughout the world, who form a band of brothers under the principles of Charity, Unity, Fraternity and Patriotism. Please come and join your Parish’s Council of the Knights of Columbus. Membership contact is in the Church Bulletin’s Ministry section or just look for a Knight in his Black Polo with the Knights logo embroidered on the right chest. 7
