Solemnity of All Saints

Solemnity of All Saints Remembering the Saints

“Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God. Blessed are they who are persecuted for the sake of righteousness, for theirs is the Kingdom of heaven.” – Matthew 5: 9-10 This weekend we celebrate the Solemnity of All Saints – time for us to remember the holy men and women who have gone before us. These are individuals who gave their lives, some literally as martyrs, for the faith. While the stories of their lives vary, the one thing that they have in common is that they practiced heroic virtue. Many were persecuted and martyred, thus making the ultimate profession of faith through their blood. They were early church leaders, the apostles, and those we remember in the litany of saints. But, some are even more recent. Those who suffered, who tried to bring peace to a situation, those who gave their lives for someone else, those who stood for truth against a government. They were, and continue to be, witnesses and examples for us to follow.

November 1 , 2020 The 2020 Annual Pastoral Appeal continues to make progress in our parish. 392 households have responded generously with $152,909 in pledges and gifts toward our goal of $166,097. If you have not yet joined in, we want your participation and need your support. Please pray and respond with a gift that inspires those seeking the love and mercy of Christ. You are the Salt of the Earth and the Light of the World. Visit https://s.dosp.org/give to make your gift today!

Prayer for Protection against Storms & Hurricanes

There are also those who lived lives of extraordinary charity and love for others. They served the poor, stood up for the outcasts of society, went into harm’s way to save a stranger, and to protect human life. Sometimes we may think that the Saints were perfect, but they were sinners just like you and me. However, they used God’s mercy and grace to excel in heroic virtue. In this weekend’s Gospel from Matthew’s 5th chapter, we hear what are known as The Beatitudes, or blessings. The Saints are those who lived The Beatitudes through their lives. Those who practice the virtues contained in them will indeed be blessed.

Our Father in Heaven through the intercession of Our Lady of Prompt Succor, spare us during this Hurricane season from all harm. Protect us and our homes from all disasters of nature. Our Lady of Prompt Succor, hasten to help us. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen

We don’t often think or ourselves as saints. Yet, through our Baptism we are called to holiness and sainthood. But, like the Saints who we celebrate today, we also need God’s mercy and grace.

All requests should come by email to secretary@icctampa.org. You can mail in your requests in writing along with your payment.

On this All Saints Day, we ask the intercession of the Saints who gone before us that we may have the courage to strive for holiness in all that we say and do. -Bishop Gregory Parkes

STATEMENT FROM BISHOP GREGORY PARKES – October 22, 2020 I would like to provide some clarity on the many news articles that have recently been shared about the Catholic Church. Regardless of the headlines generated by a new film about Pope Francis, there has been no change in Catholic Church teaching. The Catholic Church teaches and believes that marriage is a sacrament between a man and a woman who are united for life and is open to the generation of new life. This can be found in the Catechism of the Catholic Church, #1660. Also, the Church teaches and believes that men and women, regardless of sexual orientation, are children of God and are to be accepted with respect and compassion, since we are all created in God’s image. This can be found in the Catechism of the Catholic Church, #2358. Regarding the topic of civil unions, the Church does not address this issue in its official teaching because civil unions are considered a legal construct for defining legal rights in relationships. To learn more about the Church’s teachings, I encourage you to read the Catechism of the Catholic Church, which is readily available online. May God Bless you!

THE LIFE OF FATHER MICHAEL JOSEPH McGIVNEY, FOUNDER OF THE KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS, WHO WAS BEATIFIED ON OCTOBER 31, 2020.

On March 15, 2008, Pope Benedict XVI bestowed the title of Venerable Servant of God to the Founder of The Knights of Columbus, Father Michael McGivney, recognizing his heroic virtue. This important step occurred after years of careful investigation of Father McGivney’s life, spirituality and holiness by the Congregation for the Causes of Saints. The declaration of Venerable confirmed what those who knew him in life, and others who call upon him since his death, have believed about Father McGivney: He lived a life of heroic virtue with an extraordinary love of God and neighbor. Twelve years later, on May 26, 2020, Pope Francis approved a miracle through Father McGivney’s intercession, the next step in the process will be a Beatification Mass, to be held October 31,2020, in the Cathedral of St. Joseph in Hartford, Conn. At that time, Father McGivney will be declared “Blessed” and his feast day will be set. Father McGivney will be the first U.S.born priest to be beatified who spent his entire priestly ministry in a parish. This is a great boost to the priesthood and to the Catholic Church in America. The approved miracle involved the healing of a child in the womb from a fatal condition. While expecting their 13th child, Daniel and Michelle Schachle of Tennessee were told that the boy had Trisomy-21 (Down syndrome). A few weeks later, an ultrasound diagnosed fetal hydrops, in which multiple organs were filled with fluid. Doctors said that there was no hope of survival and abortion was the best option. As faithful Catholics, the Schachles refused abortion and began praying to Father McGivney for a miracle. An insurance agent with the Knights of Columbus, Daniel earned a trip to the Marian Shrine in Fatima, Portugal, and brought his wife for a prayerful pilgrimage. At Mass in Fatima, Michelle felt something change within her when she heard the words of Gospel about the Roman official whose son was healed by Jesus: “Go; your son lives.” A few days after returning to Tennessee, an ultrasound indicated that the unborn child was healed of fetal hydrops. Studied for years at the Vatican, the healing was declared miraculous by medical and theological experts. Today, Michael McGivney Schachle is an active 5-year-old, with Down syndrome, who is surrounded by a loving family. 7
