I pray these lines find all doing well. Things are well here at the parish, so incredible to realize that Christmas has come and gone. What that tells me is that Lent will be here before you know it, so we need to enjoy normal time where we are in the green. Just to let you all know, during Lent, among other things I give up sweets for Lent, my parents always practiced this as I was growing up, so I continue the tradition – yes even chocolate. Any other time of the year I can never give up chocolate but for Jesus – I can do it! Once Lent is over, I make up for all the chocolate I missed, Hershey stocks plummet during Lent, but they sure make up for it after Easter. LOL We hear today in our Gospel about John the Baptist recalling Jesus’ baptism. It was then that John realized exactly who Jesus was. It is much like that for each and every one of us, when we realize who Jesus truly is, it changes our lives. There are many people I know who “believed” in Jesus or “had faith” but they no longer do. These individuals never really knew Jesus at all and thought they had faith, but they obviously did not because once you know HIM you cannot turn, nor walk away. Jesus named us well when he referred to us human beings as sheep. Sheep need to follow a shepherd, without a doubt if they do not follow Jesus, they WILL follow something or someone. So many people today are so lost, even if they are successful and established because they follow something or someone other than Jesus. We are created to follow God!! Anything else we follow may be or seem to be immediate fix BUT it will never satisfy or end well. St. Augustine stated it perfectly – “In God alone be at rest my soul.” Love, Fr. Mike TODAY’S READINGS First Reading — The glory of the LORD shows through Israel, a light to all nations, that salvation may reach to the ends of the earth (Isaiah 49:3, 5-6). Psalm — Here am I, Lord; I come to do your will (Psalm 40). Second Reading — All those who call upon the name of the Lord are called to be holy (1 Corinthians 1:13). Gospel — John the Baptist testifies: The one who comes after me, on whom the Spirit comes down and remains, is the Son of God (John 1:29-34).
