THIRD SUNDAY OF ADVENT

DECEMBER 13, 2020

Courageously Living the Gospel through Our Lives He said: “I am the voice of one crying out in the desert, ‘make straight the way of the Lord.’” – John 1:23 Have you ever said, or heard someone say, “Who do you think you are?” Usually this is said to question someone’s authority to say or do something. And this was likely the case with John the Baptist as we read about in this weekend’s Gospel from John. Some priests, Levites, and Pharisees were sent by others to question John the Baptist. They asked him, “Who are you?” and “Are you a Prophet? Are you Elijah?” He told them, “no,” and went on to state that he was, quoting the Prophet Isaiah, “the voice of one crying out in the desert, ‘make straight the way of the Lord.’” John was proclaiming the coming of the Messiah. On this third Sunday of Advent known as Gaudete Sunday, a word which means rejoice, we wait in joyful hope for His coming as well. If someone were to ask you the question, “who are you?” “are you a Christian?”, what would you say? Could someone tell you are a follower of Jesus Christ by how you act and by what you say? Many people today claim they’re spiritual, but not religious. Others say they are Christian but don’t practice the faith or live in a Christian manner. Sure, all Christians stumble along the way, and we’re not always the best at giving witness to our faith. But with God’s help we keep going forward. You can usually tell an authentic Christian by how they live. They exude love, compassion, understanding and mercy, and are willing to share their faith with anyone who might be interested in listening. Do you have the courage to do that? We are called to Courageously Live the Gospel through our lives. Ask the Holy Spirit to give you the strength and courage to do so.” -Bishop Gregory Parkes Happy Gaudete Sunday!! I pray all are well. All of us are well, in fact – we priests are in the pink! This being the third week of Advent the pink candle reminds us that we are well past the half-way mark for the arrival of Christmas. Writing this the Monday before the weekend I don’t remember from last year if we, the priests have pink vestments from the parish or not. The term for the color is actually dusty rose, I guess the “dusty” makes it a manly color. LOL This past week we also had two celebrations in the Liturgical calendar celebrating and highlighting the Blessed Mother, December 8th being the feast of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary, this being the patronal feast day of the United states of America. We also celebrated on the 12th the feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe. I would love to tell you both were a great turn out but it has not happened yet – I have to write these early, so here’s hoping! Advent readings, on the weekends is usually the time we hear a lot about John the Baptist who is once again highlighted today. The beauty of John is that his entire life was focused upon doing God’s will and being the voice announcing Jesus, so even though we are hearing about John, his words are always directed towards Jesus. Our second reading comes to us from St. Paul and his words truly echo John’s life – “Pray without ceasing. In all circumstances give thanks, for this is the will of God for you in Christ.” Have a blessed and Holy week, God Bless You! -Love, Fr. Mike

Make a difference. “Every dollar makes a difference in covering our expenses,” says a Trappist abbot. Hundreds of US religious communities struggle to provide for aging members because most senior Catholic sisters, brothers, and religious order priests served for little pay. Your gift to the Retirement Fund for Religious helps these communities bridge the gap, offering support for medications, nursing care, and other necessities. Please be generous in Today’s Collection. 6

Juan 1, 23 ¿Has dicho alguna vez o escuchado decir a alguien: "¿Quién te crees que eres?" Respondió: “No”. -Monseñor Gregory Parkes LECTURAS DE LA SEMANA Lunes: Nm 24:2-7, 15-17a; Sal 25 (24):4-5ab, 6, 7bc-9; Mt 21:23-27 Martes: Sof 3:1-2, 9-13; Sal 34 (33):2-3, 6-7, 17-18, 19, 23; Mt 21:28 -32 Miércoles: Is 45:6b-8, 18, 21c-25; Sal 85 (84):9ab, 10-14; Lc 7:18b-23 Jueves: Gn 49:2, 8-10; Sal 72 (71):1-4ab, 7-8, 17; Mt 1:1-17 Viernes: Jer 23:5-8; Sal 72 (71):1-2, 12-13, 18-19; Mt 1:18-25 Sábado: Jue 13:2-7, 24-25a; Sal 71 (70):3-4a, 5-6ab, 16-17; Lc 1:525 Domingo: 2 Sm 7:1-5, 8b-12, 14a, 16; Sal 89 (88):2-5, 27, 29; Rom 16:25-27; Lc 1:26-38
