Lead Us Not Into Temptation

This weekend is the first Sunday of Lent, the time of the Church year when all Christians are called to personal sacrifice for ourselves and others, time to reflect and to pray. This theme is reflected in this weekend’s Gospel from St Matthew when we read about Jesus facing temptations while in the wilderness. These 40 days and nights that Jesus endured show us the humanity of our Lord as He faced hunger and hardship, just as we might imagine we would as well. When a person is down, struggling or hungry, they might be tempted to do things that they wouldn’t normally do. They might compromise their values, beliefs or take a shortcut. Many, if not all of us, have been in difficult situations and may have been tempted to compromise. The Bible tells us Jesus was tempted three times. But to get what the devil promised, He would have to compromise. He would have to give up what he believed for shortterm comfort. Take time this Lent to reflect on what tempts you and what you compromise for personal gain or pleasure. Many times, what you gain by caving in to temptation has a negative impact on others, either directly, or indirectly through our example. When you pray the Lord’s Prayer today, focus on the words, “Lead me not into temptation but deliver me from evil,” and meditate upon these words during this Lenten season. --Bishop Gregory Parkes, Diocese of St. Petersburg

I pray these lines find all doing well. I am writing this on Monday before Ash Wednesday which means tomorrow is “Fat Tuesday” WOO HOO!!! My family and I go crazy on Fat Tuesday – I eat more chocolate than Willy Wonka. Hershey stock usually drops during Lent because I stay away from chocolate. I pray all of you have a very blessed and Holy Lenten Season! There are two items I need to mention. First and foremost, I apologize to my Brother, Fr. Brian because he was forgotten last week when his birthday was last Thursday. Fr. Brian has been such an amazing gift to my time here and I know how loved he is by all of you! So, Happy Birthday Father, you’re finally 24! Finally, we in our diocese are going to be receiving a great gift from our Bishop – he will also be writing a weekly article which we will feature in our bulletin. The new picture you see was taken over a year ago – I would love to tell you that Bishop Parkes is standing on a chair or I was standing in a trench but no – he is that tall and I am that short. This being the case I will always look up to my bishop, but I would anyway because he is truly a great man. We were in school together years ago and it is such a gift that he is now our bishop. Have a great week! Love, Fr. Mike

Dear Incarnation Family, My name is Thomas M. Myers, and by way of introduction, please allow me to share my three deepest passions. First and foremost, my greatest passion is for my faith. Second is my passion for teaching. Then thirdly and finally, my passion is for the youth. When you put all three of these passions together, it is no wonder that God has called me to become a teacher. Prior to becoming an 8th grade math teacher, though, I first felt called to become fully Catholic in 2008 during my first year of college at the University of Florida. Then after finishing the RCIA in Easter of 2009 and graduating from UF three years later, I felt called to enter the seminary and discern a vocation to the Catholic Priesthood. It was during my four years in seminary, while being assigned as a Confirmation Instructor, that I discovered my love, passion, and giftedness for teaching and sharing my faith with the youth. Given this background, it is my humble privilege and honor to be blessed by the Lord, through the Pastor (Fr. Mike), who has selected me to be the parish’s new youth minister. I look forward to meeting and getting to know all of you, becoming a member of the Incarnation Family, and working with all of you and your amazing youth from our parish. Please be assured of my prayers for you as I ask you to pray for me, that I may do all that God is asking of me by performing my duties and serving our youth well. May my efforts, through the grace of God, bear much fruit that will be long-lasting for the youth and their eternity. Amen! ~~~ “The first means of evangelization is the witness of an authentically Christian life…Modern man listens more willingly to witnesses than to teachers, and if he does listen to teachers, it is because they are witnesses.” -- Pope Paul VI 6

Lv 19:1-2, 11-18; Sal 19 (18):8-10, 15; Mt 25:31-46 Is 55:10-11; Sal 34 (33):4-7, 16-19; Mt 6:7-15 Jon 3:1-10; Sal 51 (50):3-4, 12-13, 18-19; Lc 11:29-32 Est C:12, 14-16, 23-25; Sal 138 (137):1-3, 7c-8; Mt 7:712 Ez 18:21-28; Sal 130 (129):1-8; Mt 5:20-26 Dt 26:16-19; Sal 119 (118):1-2, 4-5, 7-8; Mt 5:43-48 Gn 12:1-4a; Sal 33 (32):4-5, 18-20, 22; 2 Tm 1:8b-10; Mt 17:1-9
