Roadmap for Courageously Living the Gospel

The mutually shared vision of the Diocese of St Petersburg is Courageously Living the Gospel. Each one of us are called to proclaim the Good News, to invite others to a deeper relationship with God, and to encounter our Lord in all we do. These might be easy words to say, but might be more challenging to actually do. Society might have us judge and pigeon-hole groups of people or individuals, causing us to dismiss them because they’re different from us or they don’t share the same values, beliefs, politics or general outlook on life that we do. As Christians, we are called to follow a different path. Such was the case in this weekend’s Gospel about the Samaritan woman at the well. Jesus shows us that despite the woman being of a different nationality and belief, that they can have a dialog – a dialog which will change her life. In fact, she has a transformational experience which leads to others in town being transformed by her witness. The woman encounters our Lord in this meeting. Our Lord shows kindness and mercy; He meets her where she’s at and engages her in a simple conversation. He then proclaims to her that He is the one who can give her living water – a water which will satisfy her to eternal life. She then runs to town to proclaim to others what she witnessed and invites them to come and see. My dear friends, this is the roadmap for our vision. After having a personal encounter with Christ each Sunday at the Mass and in the Eucharist, you have an opportunity to invite others to come to know the love and mercy of God. Remember this entire encounter happened at the water well. Imagine what can happen at the coffee station or water cooler at your place of work. Pray for the courage this week to proclaim, invite, and encounter the Lord in all your life situations, and to share the Good News with others. --Bishop Gregory Parkes, Diocese of St. Petersburg I pray these lines find all doing well. I want to take this opportunity to “Thank You All” as a parish for responding so generously and lovingly as a parish by receiving Communion on the hand as well as your understanding of the other alterations made at Mass. This shows me that you are not selfish but in fact very generous in changing up what you do for the good of everyone, you truly reflect Jesus’ Heart. I will not mention any of this again because thanks to you all there is no need. This is not something for us to worry about at all, once we are doing what we can, taking sensible precautions we can live our lives peacefully. Just putting my two cents in for whatever it is worth – watching news is fine but do not keep the TV on and constantly be caught up. I’ll watch twice a day for about a half hour and that’s it. News is designed to keep your attention and they do a great job with that, but they can also get us unnecessarily hyped up. Do what you can to feel “ready” then give it to GOD – and don’t worry!!!! Today in our Gospel we meet a woman who seems to collect husbands – most people collect stamps or coins but not her. Jesus meets the woman where she is, he speaks with her which was not normally done. He offers her a life which would be life giving, peaceful and so much better than the life she currently knows. After speaking with her Jesus lets her know he knows her total history, not to make her feel bad but so that she understands he knows her and her situation. He proceeds to tell her all about her life, she then goes and “evangelizes” (unbeknownst to her) bringing others to Jesus. We evangelize by our actions and attitudes all the time. One aspect we can glean from today is –Have we gone over all the parts and aspects of our life with Jesus? He has been right there through it all but if He were to sit down and speak with us about our entire life thus far, would we be like this woman, accepting and fearless or would we be embarrassed? It is so important that we share our life with Jesus daily, the good as well as the bad and awkward. Spiritually and meditatively speaking I pick a mental place where I generally speak with the Lord, it is a photo that was in a hallway of the hospital when my Dad was there – a beautiful large tree and lush grass. In spending this time with our creator and Lord, wherever we meet him, it is so life giving, and we do receive that living water which satisfies like nothing else can. Have a great week! --Love, Fr. Mike

Next week, our parish will take up The Catholic Relief Services Collection (CRSC). Funds from this collection provide food to the hungry, support displaced refugees, and bring Christ’s love and mercy to all people here and abroad. Next week, please give generously to the CRSC and help Jesus in disguise. Learn more about the collection at www.usccb.org/catholic-relief.
