Seeing the Presence of God in Our Midst Today’s Gospel on this Fourth Sunday of Lent is about healing and about hope. We hear about a blind beggar who Jesus encounters as he was passing by. We don’t know the name of this man, only that he was blind from birth. As a result, the man was relegated to begging for his very sustenance since he couldn’t do any other type of work. Without being asked, Jesus heals the man’s blindness by smearing clay on his eyes. Jesus gives him instructions to go and wash in the Pool of Siloam. The man does so and returns able to see. We see in this miracle the love and compassion of Jesus. He was moved by the sight of the poor blind beggar and desired to heal him and restore him to a place of dignity in the community. In an interesting twist, it is the Pharisees who are spiritually blind and unable to accept or believe that the man was healed by Jesus. They even criticize Jesus for doing this on the sabbath. On the other hand, the man who was healed not only regains his sight, but comes to know and believe in Jesus as the Son of Man. In our lives, are we sometimes like the Pharisees in that we fail to see the presence of God around us and in our very midst? Are we blind to His presence in our lives or in the lives of others? Do we have faith and trust in God that He can heal our spiritual and even physical weaknesses? Each time we come to Mass, it’s a new opportunity to profess our faith in God and to give Him thanks for His many blessings. During the coming week, take time each day to think of at least one blessing that you’ve received from God. Say a prayer of thanksgiving to Him. And remember, the love and compassion of Jesus Christ is there for us, just as it was for the blind beggar. --Bishop Gregory Parkes, Diocese of St. Petersburg I pray these lines find all doing well. I would ask what’s new, but we all have the T-shirt on that. I pray that all are taking the necessary precautions to stay safe and healthy. It is getting awfully quiet around the office but of course this is understandable and a good sign, people are taking our situation seriously. I personally want to Thank all our public officials for doing what they can to keep us all safe. They are not making easy decisions, but they are making wise ones. It is rather appropriate that we hear today about the blind man, it is so important that we not be blind to what is being told to us about this virus. In today’s Gospel we hear amazing conclusions which are simply not true. The people asked Jesus a question that was very pointed and pretty condemning, who sinned, this man or his family. Jesus sets them straight that neither was the case. I feel that in a similar sense people are reading this virus all wrong. I have heard some people with some pretty “different” ideas thinking that God has given us this virus so people will learn a lesson – this is totally wrong!!! Our God does not work this way, never has, never will! As a result of this virus I think many people will come to rely on God since there is nothing, we can do about this. Sin has not caused this virus but there are those religious “fanatics” respectfully speaking who feel this way and try to sway others to this wrong way of thinking. God loves us and is going to get us through this. As Jesus cured the blind man, we will find a cure for this, like the blind man – what we need most is trust! Have a great week! Love, Fr. Mike

This week, we take up The Catholic Relief Services Collection to help Jesus in disguise. This collection helps six Catholic agencies to provide struggling communities with relief and support and to work for peace and reconciliation among our marginalized brothers and sisters here and around the world. Please prayerfully consider how you can support the collection. Learn more about the collection at www.usccb.org/catholic-relief.

CHARITY

If you truly want to help the soul of your neighbor, you should approach God first with all your heart. Ask him simply to fill you with charity, the greatest of all virtues; with it you can accomplish what you desire. FILL US

Open wide the windows of our spirits and fill us full of light; open wide the door of our hearts, that we may receive and entertain Thee with all our powers of adoration. —Christina Rossetti
