FAITH FORMATION SESSIONS RESUME THIS SUNDAY. PLEASE join us and the children in grades PreK-5th in the pavilion at 10:30am for a special Epiphany Sunday Celebration with the Knights of Columbus. OUR TEENS AT WORK!! The high school Faith Formation class ran a contest to see which of their small faith groups could raise the most money for our mission parish Espiritu Santo in the Dominican Republic. They were able to donate $198.00 by performing jobs and raising the money on their own. In a day when most teens want to go to the movies or buy another video game these teens took to heart what it means to give to others who are in need! Thank you for your generous donation! The other classes in Faith Formation are hard at work earning money to bring in for our mission parish as well! FIRST RECONCILIATION Please keep the children who will be receiving the sacrament of First Reconciliation next Saturday in your prayers! Parents please be at the church by 9:15AM. Jesus Day Retreat Reminder – January 18th at 9:30AM in the church. This is a special retreat day for the children who will begin preparations for First Communion this year. La Epifanía. Domingo 5 de Enero Reflexionando la Palabra de Dios La fiesta de Reyes que hoy celebramos, nos recuerda sobre todo la vocación universal y misionera de nuestra fe. La fe cristiana es una oferta que Dios hace a la humanidad entera. Por la presencia del Hijo de Dios en el mundo, su Epifanía. Todos los hombres de todas las épocas y culturas estamos llamados a la salvación definitiva. Cada civilización, cada tiempo, cada hombre tiene en el cielo su estrella que, seguida e interpretada correctamente, lo lleva hasta Jesús. Él, Jesús, respeta los modos de ser, las costumbres y tradiciones en lo que tienen de valioso y, al hacerse hombre, instaura la nueva y gran fraternidad de todos los hombres, hijos de Dios llamados a vivir para siempre con Él. La misión y las misiones de la Iglesia nacen de esta convicción y de este gozo. Pero cuando san Mateo redactaba el evangelio de la adoración de los magos, quería destacar seguramente que son los extranjeros de buena voluntad, los que se acercan a Cristo, mucho más que los que en teoría lo tendrían más fácil. Al describirnos el malestar y la hipocresía de Herodes o el desinterés de los fariseos, también evidenciaba la dificultad que tienen los poderosos del mundo para abrirse de corazón al Evangelio. A menudo tienen miedo, tenemos miedo, de perder posiciones, olvidando que el mensaje de Jesús es precisamente palabra de libertad verdadera y de dignidad para todos. Herodes, como sabemos, prefirió matar a los niños de Belén; otros encuentran, ciertamente, soluciones menos crueles, pero no por eso se resisten menos a que el Evangelio impregne la vida humana personal y colectiva. Siempre en algún rincón de la tierra hay hombres y mujeres, reyes, que, captando los signos de los tiempos, seguirán la estrella y encontrarán finalmente a Jesús. Y siempre habrá cristianos que también querrán convertirse, con la gracia de Dios, en signos para los hombres del propio medio y de los confines de la tierra. Entre nosotros, Reyes es la gran fiesta de los niños. Ellos son evidentemente la alegría y la esperanza de las familias y de la Iglesia. El mejor regalo que los mayores podríamos hacerles, sería el de enseñarles por la palabra y, sobre todo, por el ejemplo, el profundo aspecto liberador que Cristo da a nuestra vida, que vieran en casa la alegría de la presencia de Jesús y que aprendieran, ya desde ahora, que la felicidad mayor consiste en compartir. P. Jairo Minutos de sabiduría ¿Pertenecemos a los buscadores de Dios? Parece que los hombres no pueden seguir viviendo sin ideales, parece que no pueden caminar por el desierto sin que una estrella oriente sus pasos. Parece que lo importante en esta sociedad de consumo ya no sean los medios de vida o los camellos, sino, otra vez, los ideales, los fines que den sentido a nuestras vidas. En una sociedad en la que se producen tantas cosas y en la que tenemos, o tienen algunos, casi de todo, no se pueden producir los valores ni tan siquiera proyectarse. Porque éstos, a diferencia de los medios de vida, nunca pueden
producirse. Y por eso cunde el desaliento, la frustración y hasta el abandono de la vida. Muchos, sobre todo los más jóvenes, no saben qué hacer y por qué luchar y, al oscurecerse los valores auténticos, "pasan de todo" lo demás. Es posible que la estrella que necesitamos haya desaparecido al entrar en la gran ciudad. También los Magos la perdieron de vista al entrar en Jerusalén, pero ellos consultaron las Escrituras. “Los magos no se pusieron en camino porque hubieran visto la estrella, sino que vieron la estrella porque se habían puesto en camino” (San Juan Crisóstomo)

TRADICIONES DE NUESTRA FE Es tiempo de añadir los reyes magos al pesebre. En 1448 llegaron los pesebres italianos a las iglesias españolas, pero no fue hasta que el Rey Carlos III le regaló un pesebre a su hijo en el siglo XVIII que el uso de pesebres se expandió en los hogares. Desde entonces, el uso de nacimientos llegó al continente americano en donde se convirtió en la decoración principal para las fiestas navideñas. Así como en todo país latinoamericano el montaje del Belén es una tradición, lo es también en Venezuela. Con el pesebre venezolano llegan también aguinaldos, parrandas, Misas y patines. ¡Sí! ¡Patines! Desde la mitad del siglo pasado los venezolanos celebran la época navideña con “patinadas”. Para la cultura hispana, la fiesta de Reyes siempre ha sido muy significativa. Es el día en que se celebra el reconocimiento de Jesús como Rey y Dios, y, por lo tanto, el día en que tiene más significado hacer regalos, en memoria de esos regalos presentados por los Magos al Niño Jesús. En muchos países hay cabalgatas y desfiles de Reyes. Hay mucha costumbre también de tener el Roscón de Reyes, que es un pan dulce en forma de rosco, en que se esconde una figurita.
