MANIFESTING THE SPIRIT The Christmas season closes this Sunday with the Baptism of the Lord. This feast is a sister to last week’s feast of the Epiphany. Each of them celebrates an “epiphany,” or a manifestation of the Spirit of God in Jesus—first in his birth, and now at his baptism. The divine Spirit is manifested in all of the scriptures for this feast. Psalm 104 highlights the Spirit of God creating and renewing the earth, while the reading from Isaiah describes God restoring Israel. In Luke’s account of the baptism of the Lord the Holy Spirit descends upon Jesus. And the letter to Titus reminds us that the Holy Spirit was “richly poured out” on us also, through the “bath of rebirth” (Titus 3:5, 6). Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

READINGS FOR THE WEEK Monday: 1 Sm 1:1-8; Ps 116:12-19; Mk 1:14-20 Tuesday: 1 Sm 1:9-20; 1 Sm 2:1, 4-8abcd; Mk 1:21-28

THE BAPTISM OF THE LORD FEAR NOT Did the first reading from Isaiah sound familiar? It was also heard on the first Sunday of Advent in December of 2008. I suppose it could be a reminder that John the Baptist appears at the beginning of the Advent/Christmas season and at the end. In Advent we were preparing for Jesus’ coming at Christmas. Now we are preparing for his coming at any time. The reading from Isaiah talks about the Lord coming in mercy to the people whose “guilt is expiated” (Isaiah 40:2). With our sins forgiven we need not fear asking God for help: “Fear not to cry out” (Isaiah 40:9). The Lord comes in power, not to strike sinners down but to shepherd them and lead them. In the second reading, St. Paul has a similar theme. Jesus gave his life for us on the cross so that we could be free to give ourselves in love as he did. No matter how bad I was in the past, the Lord loves me enough to forgive it all, and even better, to give the Spirit to help me stay close to God.

Wednesday: 1 Sm 3:1-10, 19-20; How do we prepare for this? We can Ps 40:2, 5, 7-10; Mk 1:29-39 start by hearing the words of the readings today, letting them sink into Thursday: 1 Sm 4:1-11; Ps 44:10-11, our hearts and minds. Ask the Spirit to 14-15, 24-25; Mk 1:40-45 help look for ways you can be more loving with your family, then with your Friday: 1 Sm 8:4-7, 10-22a; friends, and eventually with anyone Ps 89:16-19; Mk 2:1-12 who needs your help. When we let Saturday:1 Sm 9:1-4, 17-19; 10:1a; that Spirit guide us, we become like Ps 21:2-7; Mk 2:13-17 Jesus in that we can listen for God to say, “You are my beloved child; with Sunday: Is 62:1-5; Ps 96:1-3, 7-10; you I am well pleased” (see Luke 1 Cor 12:4-11; Jn 2:1-11 3:22). Jubilee Year of Mercy January 10, 2016 Feast of the Baptism of the Lord Fittingly, this Jubilee Year of Mercy is also the Lectionary’s Year of Luke, for Luke’s Gospel highlights God’s mercy in finding the lost, healing the sick, restoring the broken, comforting the sorrowful, forgiving the sinner through Jesus’ ministry. But before doing, Luke’s Jesus is always praying. As practical moderns programmed to measure worth by productivity, we instinctively appreciate the Jubilee’s call to embrace the practical challenges of our baptism. But today Luke focuses not on Jesus being baptized, but on Jesus praying after baptism. So must we pray to become the disciples we are called to be, that the Spirit empower us to do what disciples are called to do. Imitating Jesus’ openness to the Spirit will enable us to cooperate with the grace that transforms us into “beloved sons [and daughters] . . . in whom the Father is well pleased,” living out, in this Jubilee Year of Mercy, the extraordinary potential of our baptism. —Peter Scagnelli, Copyright © J. Dominican Republic and Haiti). Two men, Alonso y Antonio de Trejo, brought a painting of the Virgin to Hispaniola from their home in Placencia, in the region of Extremadura in 1502. The legend states that the image of the Virgin mysteriously disappeared from the house of the brothers Trejo. The painting later reappeared in an orange bush. The location of this bush is where the first church of Higüey was built. Now thousands of devoted visitors make the trek here to deposit offerings and to ask favors of the Mother of Christ. Dominicans pray to her for miracles and cures and for intercession for whatever troubles them. Las Noches de Vela / the Nights of Prayer are celebrated the night before Altagracia day. The painting is found in the Basilica in Higüey and it is said to have been painted in the late 15th century in Spain. It was mysteriously delivered by a shrouded old man who dropped the painting and disappeared. This painting shows the scene of the birth of Jesus. The frame is made from Dominican gold and inlaid with fine enamels, precious stones and jewels. The painting has been completely restored. Church of the Incarnation Domingo 10 de Enero de 2016.
