CALLED TO SERVE For many weeks now, we have been celebrating the appearance of the divine presence in human form. As a child, he came to Mary and Joseph, was seen by the shepherds, and then by some wandering magi from the East. Today we celebrate another showing, later in time, to a group gathered at the Jordan River. John hesitated to baptize Jesus, whom he recognized as "one mightier than I." But he did as Jesus asked, and the "Holy Spirit descended" and heaven's voice spoke to Jesus, "You are my beloved Son." Jesus was beginning his public life of teaching and service. Soon he would start calling others to join him. Peter was one of the first to be called by Jesus. In today's second reading, he announces the heart of the message, "peace through Jesus Christ, who is Lord of all." January 13, 2013 The Baptism of the Lord January 13, 2013 He saved us through the bath of rebirth and renewal by the Holy Spirit. — Titus 3:5 In fact, in some strands of the Christian tradition it represents the clearest manifestation of the mystery of the Incarnation. On Christmas Day, for example, the Gospel reading is the Prologue of John's Gospel, which reveals the glory of Christ shining through our humanity precisely in his baptism. At any rate, this is an ancient feast, celebrated first in Egypt sixteen centuries ago. More than most other ancient people, the Egyptians understood the life-giving properties of water. On this day, they drew water from the Nile, so central in the history of their people, and reserved it in honor. Many other places copied the custom, so that St. John Chrysostom wrote of people in Antioch gathering at midnight to collect flowing water into vessels they brought from home since "today there is a blessing on the water." At home for dinner tonight, decorate the table with beautiful bowls of water and white candles, toast one another with goblets of sparkling water, and light a Christmas candle in the window one last time. --James Field, Copyright (c) J. S. Paluch Co. The Baptism of the Lord The Christmas season closes this Sunday with the Baptism of the Lord. This feast is a sister to last week’s feast of the Epiphany. Each of them celebrates an “epiphany,” or a manifestation of the Spirit of God in Jesus—first in his birth, and now at his baptism. The divine Spirit is manifested in all of the Scriptures for this feast. Psalm 104 highlights the Spirit of God creating and renewing the earth, while the reading from Isaiah describes God restoring Israel. In Luke’s account of the baptism of the Lord the Holy Spirit descends upon Jesus. And the letter from Titus reminds us that the Holy Spirit was “richly poured out” on us also, through the “bath of rebirth.”
GOD MADE MANIFEST An epiphany is a manifestation of God in visible form. Today’s Scriptures are replete with references to ways that God was made manifest. Isaiah sees “the glory of the LORD … revealed” in the visible form of God renewing the covenant by bringing the Israelites home from exile. Psalm 104 presents God’s “manifold works,” singing: “When you send forth your spirit … you renew the face of the earth.” The reading from Titus takes up this theme of renewal as a manifestation of God. It mentions three “appearances” of God—in the person of Jesus, in glory in the fullness of time, and in our baptismal “renewal by the Holy Spirit.” Finally, God was made manifest in Jesus’ baptism when “the Holy Spirit descended upon him in bodily form like a dove and a voice came from heaven.” BAPTIZED WITH THE HOLY SPIRIT AND FIRE What do all these epiphanies have to do with us? Titus assures us that the same Spirit of God who renews the universe, renewed the covenant, and descended upon Jesus has been “richly poured out on us” in “the bath of rebirth.” With Jesus, we have been baptized “with the Holy Spirit and fire.” Those of us who were baptized as infants may not remember our baptism; even less might we remember our experience of God made manifest in us that day. Yet every time our community prays the Eucharistic Prayer and shares in Holy Communion the Spirit descends upon us again, pouring out the divine life that renews and “fires” us. As we move into Ordinary Time we will hear how the Spirit propelled Jesus forth to proclaim the good news. Through our sharing in the Holy Spirit in baptism and Eucharist we, too, are propelled forth to make Christ manifest in the world. God is manifested in visible form today by the renewal and the “fire” of all the baptized.
Did the first reading from Isaiah sound familiar? It was also heard on the first Sunday of Advent in December of 2008. I suppose it could be a reminder that John the Baptist appears at the beginning of the Advent/Christmas season and at the end. In Advent we were preparing for Jesus’ coming at Christmas. Now we are preparing for his coming at any time. The reading from Isaiah talks about the Lord coming in mercy to the people whose “guilt is expiated” (Isaiah 40:2). With our sins forgiven we need not fear asking God for help: “Fear not to cry out” (Isaiah 40:9). The Lord comes in power, not to strike sinners down but to shepherd them and lead them. In the second reading, St. Paul has a similar theme. Jesus gave his life for us on the cross so that we could be free to give ourselves in love as he did. No matter how bad I was in the past, the Lord loves me enough to forgive it all, and even better, to give the Spirit to help me stay close to God. How do we prepare for this? We can start by hearing the words of the readings today, letting them sink into our hearts and minds. Ask the Spirit to help look for ways you can be more loving with your family, then with your friends, and eventually with anyone who needs your help. When we let that Spirit guide us, we become like Jesus in that we can listen for God to say, “You are my beloved child; with you I am well pleased” (see Luke 3:22). Tom Schmidt, Copyright © J. S. El Bautismo del Señor 13 de enero de 2013 Lo hizo mediante el bautismo, que nos regenera y nos renueva, por la acción del Espíritu Santo. — Tito 3:5 Domingo 13 de Enero El Bautismo del Señor Son pocos los cristianos que saben en qué día fueron bautizados, y menos aún los que lo celebran. Basta recordar la fecha de nacimiento y celebrar el cumpleaños. Lo importante evidentemente no es recordar un rito, sino agradecer la fe que ha marcado nuestra vida ya desde niños y asumir con gozo renovado nuestra condición de hijos de Dios. Tal vez lo primero que hemos de hacer es preguntarnos si la fe ocupa un lugar central en nuestra vida, o si todo se reduce a un añadido artificial que tiene todavía alguna importancia, y del que podríamos prescindir fácilmente. Una pregunta clave sería ésta: ¿Es la fe la que orienta e inspira la totalidad de mi vida, o vivo más bien sostenido y estimulado sólo por la búsqueda de bienestar, el disfrute de la vida, las ocupaciones laborales y mis pequeños proyectos?. Ser creyente, antes de creer algo, es creerle al Dios revelado en Cristo. La pregunta sería si mi fe se reduce a aceptar teóricamente «lo que me diga la Iglesia», o si más bien busco abrirme de manera humilde y confiada a Dios. Pero para abrirse a Dios no son suficientes los ritos externos, los rezos rutinarios o la confesión de los labios. Es necesario creerle a Jesucristo, escuchar interiormente su Palabra, acoger su evangelio. ¿Abro alguna vez la Biblia? ¿Leo los evangelios? ¿Hago algo por conocer mejor la persona de Jesús y su mensaje? Además, la fe no es algo que se vive de manera solitaria y privada. Es una equivocación pensar en la fe como una especie de afición personal. El creyente celebra, agradece canta y disfruta su fe en el seno de una comunidad cristiana. Quien quiera conocer «el gozo de la fe» y experimentar la luz, la fuerza y el aliento que la fe puede introducir en la vida del ser humano ha de comenzar por estimularla, cuidarla y renovarla.

El ser un miembro activo de nuestra comunidad parroquial implica que la persona este inscrita en la parroquia, que asista regularmente a misa, y que esta persona trate en lo máximo de colaborar y aportar a la iglesia a través de sus recursos, talento y tiempo. Como resultado, el uso del sobre para las ofrendas es una buena forma para verificar la asistencia a la iglesia. Si usted decide a no usar los sobres o simplemente no puede hacer su contribución a la iglesia, le pedimos el favor de escribir una nota en la cual usted nos ofrece su apoyo espiritual a través de sus oraciones y colóquelo en las canastas de las ofrendas. | 10 TRADICIONES DE NUESTRA FE La costumbre del bautismo infantil debe ser mucho más que un acto social o una tradición cultural, donde el ropón y los regalos son más importantes que la doctrina cristiana, y los padrinos se escogen no por su buen ejemplo sino por su cuenta bancaria. Según los Hechos de los Apóstoles, familias enteras se bautizaban cuando el padre de familia decidía hacerse cristiano. Esta práctica de bautizar, no solo al nuevo creyente sino también a su mujer y a sus hijos, poco a poco, quedó solo en bautizar los niños del original creyente. El mundo en aquel tiempo estaba basado sobre la familia así como muchas culturas latinas de hoy. El bautizo infantil nació en la Iglesia primitiva y al pasar de los siglos llegó a transformarse en un rito religioso muy importante en la catequesis del nuevo cristiano. El niño viste de ropita blanca que recuerda la presencia de Cristo en su alma, se le regala una vela que lo invita a brillar con la luz de Cristo y se le da una madrina o un padrino que le enseñará a vivir en Cristo. —Fray Gilberto Cavazos-Glz, OFM, Copyright © J.
