SEEKING THE LIGHT In today’s readings we find ourselves being drawn more deeply into relationship with Jesus. We are getting to know more about him as we see how he struggles with the news of his cousin John’s arrest. His first response is to withdraw, to leave Nazareth and go to Capernaum. There he is perhaps both consoled and challenged by the words of Isaiah that Matthew quotes, “the people who sit in darkness have seen a great light, / on those dwelling in a land overshadowed by death / light has arisen” (Matthew 4:16). Jesus contemplates his cousin’s death, perhaps his own death, and he seeks the light. Maybe it is these words of Isaiah that move Jesus out of his withdrawal and into action. He begins to preach, teach, cure disease and illness, and proclaim the gospel of the kingdom.

THANK YOU!! To all the volunteers who made this year’s Jesus Day Retreat a huge success. The children preparing for First Communion along with their parents enjoyed a day of decorating crosses; bread making demonstration; church etiquette; and a tour of the church. Each child received a Blessing Cup with a book of prayers to be used at home throughout the year. The children will all receive First Communion in May.

1 John 4:8, Says God is love. This is a belief that many people profess daily by claiming the title of “Christian”. As Catholics we profess this distinctly by our attendance at Sunday mass. The question that we must ask ourselves is if we are being honest in our profession. Do we really believe that God is love, or like many others do we act as if God and love can be separated? There are other things that we profess. “I love my parents”, “I love my spouse”, “I love my friends”, “and I love my children”. If we love these people and we say that God is love, how often do we speak of God to the ones we love? How many times have we prayed with or for our friends and family members? How many times have we blessed our children or called them to be closer to God? An emotion or action void of God is not love, no matter how affectionate it feels or appears. It is a matter of integrity. If we say that we believe something then we should be living it. If a believer and a non-believer live the exact same lifestyle then one of them is a liar.

Did you hear the great news?! Everyone is stampeding to Incarnation to learn more about this year’s Vacation Bible School. When? February 24th- 6:30PM in St. Michael’s Hall. If you would like to volunteer please plan on joining Boomer and the gang!

FEAST OF FAITH Penitential Rite Standing together in the presence of the Lord, we acknowledge our weakness, our sins and faults and failings. But the penitential rite is really less about our sins than it is about God’s mercy. It is not a time for individual confession, like a mini-sacrament of reconciliation. It is, rather, a preparatory rite, preparing us to praise the mercy of Christ as we acknowledge our own weakness. When Simon Peter witnesses the miraculous catch of fish—when he realizes who is in the boat with him—he falls at Jesus’ feet with the words, “Depart from me, Lord, for I am a sinful man” (Luke 5:8). We are like Peter. The more aware of the Lord’s presence we become, the more awareness we also have of our sinfulness, our weakness. The penitential rite of the Mass takes several forms, from the traditional Confiteor or “I confess” to a litany, spoken or sung by the deacon or cantor with responses by the entire assembly. The penitential rite always includes the words Kyrie, eleison; Christe, eleison—Lord, have mercy; Christ, have mercy. This ancient Greek prayer came to the Roman liturgy from the East, and still echoes in many of the litanies of the Eastern Rite Churches. These words turn our gaze from our own weakness to the gentleness, the kindness, the forgiving love of Christ.

New Year's Resolutions Kept Becoming a blood donor is one of three new year's resolutions that I have kept. My daughter had a liver transplant 16 years ago, so I value the precious gift of blood. I still have that beautiful child who is now 33, completed her masters degree and is working for a Fortune 500 company. Without this gift of life, I wouldn't have the pleasure of watching my baby girl grow up into a fascinating woman. Diane - Valrico OUR NEXT BLOOD DRIVE IS ON FEBRUARY 6TH!
