HOLY, HOLY, HOLY! “Holy, holy, holy!” Ancient languages, like the Hebrew used in the scriptures, did not always have a way to express superlatives in one word. Isaiah could not say God was “holiest,” so he used the threefold repetition of the same word. This bit of scriptural minutiae about these “three little words” that we sing at every Mass serves as a reminder that answering God’s call has to be grounded in awareness of God’s holiness. In Isaiah and in the Gospel passage today, we hear accounts of the revelation of God’s power and might: the seraphim in the temple and the miraculous catch of fish. These are not wondrous revelations for their own sakes. They lead to a response in mission, Isaiah’s “Here I am, send me!” and the disciples’ leaving everything to follow Jesus. And so must our own “Holy, Holy, Holy!” lead us to Christ in the Eucharist every Sunday, and to a life following him day by day. Copyright ©

Saturday: Is 58:9b-14; Ps 86:1-6; Lk 5:27-32 Sunday: Dt 26:4-10; Ps 91:1-2, 1015; Rom 10:8-13; Lk 4:1-13

FINAL IMPRESSIONS

John, the only other evangelist to recount the story of the miraculous catch of fish, places the story after the resurrection of Christ from the dead, not at the beginning of his ministry as Luke does. Unlike Matthew and Mark, wherein the disciples follow Jesus upon his call, Luke seemed to know that his listeners would comprehend the call to J. S. Paluch Co. discipleship better if it followed a miraculous sign. (And Peter’s acknowledgment of his sinfulness echoes Isaiah’s description of his unclean lips.) But whether it’s Luke READINGS FOR THE WEEK describing the beginning of the Monday: 1 Kgs 8:1-7, 9-13; Ps disciples following Jesus in mission or 132:6-7, 8-10; Mk 6:53-56 John’s depiction of the risen Christ preparing his followers for the mission Tuesday: 1 Kgs 8:22-23, 27-30; Ps following his return to the Father, the 84:3-5, 10-11; Mk 7:1-13 point is the same, and remains the same for us today. Paul expresses it Wednesday: Jl 2:12-18; Ps 51:36ab, 12-14, 17; 2 Cor 5:20 — 6:2; best. It does not matter who preaches the Gospel, or where or when, but Mt 6:1-6, 16-18 only that it is, through the grace of Thursday: Dt 30:15-20; Ps 1:1-4, 6; God in us, preached and believed. Lk 9:22-25 Friday: Is 58:1-9a; Ps 51:3-6ab, 18- Today’s Readings: Is 6:1–2a, 3–8; Ps 138:1–5, 7–8; 1 Cor 15:1–11; Lk 5:1 19; Mt 9:14-15 –11 Copyright © J. S. Paluch Company

SPIRITUAL MOTHERHOOD FOR PRIESTS Support the Priesthood of Christ

The role of a Catholic woman might be summed up in a word: MARY

• • • •

Motherhood (physical and spiritual) Adoration (first duty to God) Resourceful (wise, creative) Yes to God (serving the divine will)

The lesson for spiritual mothers: the more we reflect the heart of Mary, the more God can use us to spiritually call forth from men the masculine ideal of Christ-like spiritual fatherhood. If you are a woman and feel you are being called to this Ministry, please call or email Cheralyn Quevedo at (813) 523-9349; cjqcafe@gmail.com. We will be praying a Rosary of Intercession for Priests every Thursday at 9:00am in the Cry Room. |5

LENTEN INFORMATION FROM THE DIOCESE OF ST. PETERSBURG

Reminder: Ash Wednesday is February 10 Regulations on Fasting and Abstinence The dual disciplines of fasting and abstinence have a long history in the Catholic Church. Going back to the early Church, the purpose behind the custom of self denial is not punishment; it is to simplify our lifestyles so that we create a certain emptiness. In this way, freed from all distractions, we are able to hear and respond to God's continued call to conversion and holiness.

+ Fasting is to be observed on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday by all Catholics between the ages of 18 to 59 years (inclusive). On days of fasting, one full meal is allowed. Two smaller meals, sufficient to maintain strength, may be taken according to one's needs, but together they should not equal another full meal. Eating between meals is not permitted, but liquids are allowed. 6|

+ Abstinence from meat is to be observed by all Catholics who are 14 years of age and older. Ash Wednesday, all the Fridays of Lent, and Good Friday are days of abstinence. Note: If a person is unable to observe the above regulations due to ill health or other serious reasons, they are urged to practice other forms of self denial that are suitable to their condition. Fasting, almsgiving, and prayer are the three traditional disciplines of Lent. The faithful and catechumens should undertake these practices seriously in a spirit of penance and of preparation for baptism or of renewal of baptism at Easter.

Ash Wednesday Mass Schedule: 7:00am, 8:30am, 12:10pm, 6:00pm (Spanish), 7:30pm

2016 ANNUAL PASTORAL APPEAL

MISSION TRIP!

Prayer is essential to our faith lives and ultimately connected to our call to conversion and discipleship. Our 2016 Annual Pastoral Appeal, Open the Door to Mercy reminds us to be merciful, as our Father is merciful. We believe the Holy Spirit will guide our journey and bestow His grace upon us as we continue to serve others. Please keep the success of the APA in your prayers. Pray for those who are seeking fulfillment, that with generous support of the faithful, they will be brought forth in the light of God’s unending love.

We are planning a mission trip to visit our sister parish in the Dominican Republic. The dedication of the church will be celebrated during this trip on Saturday, April 16, 2016. More information to come in the next bulletin! If you are interested, please call Irene at the Parish Office.

Church of the Incarnation Domingo 7 de febrero de 2016.
