JESUS AND THE LAW In today’s continuation of the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus addresses the relationship between the current interpretation of the law of Moses and his own. He insists that he has come to fulfill, not abolish the law. Jesus is explicit here. He repeats the phrase, “You have heard . . .” with the counterpoint, “But I say . . .” He will not settle for mere avoidance of outright murder or adultery or lying. He goes to the source of murder—hatred, resentment, spite. He insists on chaste living. He overrules the one-sided loopholes that allow men to divorce women, a law based on the view of women as property. He disallows all the means that people employ to play fast and loose with marriage. His words urge mutual fidelity. His listeners and followers are to honor the law wholly and not minimally. The consequences of failure are clear and severe. The smallest are watching. They are those rendered powerless by age or ignorance or circumstance. These little ones depend on the word and action of the mature and knowledgeable, and they are not to be betrayed. Copyright © J. Creator God, Life is your gift to me. Through Baptism, you invite me to share the gift of my life in service to others. Be with me as I choose each day to witness your presence in our world. Give me the courage and generosity to respond gratefully to your love, to your call. I pray especially for those who serve you in ministry within our Parish and throughout our Diocese. May we bring the light of your love to those in need. Loving and gracious Father, keep us close to you. Through your Holy Spirit provide us with strength to do what you ask of each of us. Embrace us and those that we serve with your love. For if not us, who? If not here, where? If not now, when? If not for your Kingdom, why? We make this prayer through Christ our Lord Amen

—Fray Gilberto Cavazos-Glz, OFM, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.
