(Our Lady of Altagracia (High Grace) The story of Our Lady de Altagracia dates back to when Spain first colonized the island of Hispaniola (today, Dominican Republic and Hai ). Two men, Alonso y Antonio de Trejo, brought a pain ng of the Virgin to Hispaniola from their home in Placen‐ cia, in the region of Extremadura in 1502. The leg‐ end states that the image of the Virgin mysterious‐ ly disappeared from the house of the brothers Tre‐ jo. The pain ng later reappeared in an orange bush. The loca on of this bush is where the first church of Higuey was built. Now thousands of de‐ voted visitors make the trek here to deposit offer‐ ings and to ask favors of the Mother of Christ. Do‐ minicans pray to her for miracles and cures and for intercession for whatever troubles them. Las No‐ ches de Vela/ the Nights of Prayer are celebrated the night before Altagracia day. The painting is found in the Basilica in Higuey and it is said to have been painted in the late 15th century in Spain. It was mysteriously delivered by a shrouded old man who dropped the painting and disappeared. This painting shows the scene of the birth of Jesus. The frame is made from Dominican gold and inlaid with fine enamels, precious stones and jewels. The painting has been completely restored. Virgen de la Altagracia was crowned the spiritual mother of Higuey in the pontificate of Pius XI in August 15, 1922. The ceremony was held in Santo Domingo at the Puerta del Conde. It was declared that January 21st would be a National holiday by the President of the Dominican Republic, Doctor Joaquin Antonio Balaguer Ricardo. This ceremony was attended by many important people of the Catholic Church. On January 26, 1979, John Paul II personally crowned her again when he visited the Dominican Republic. Last month Fr. Michael went to the Dominican Republic to visit our sister parish. He celebrated Mass at the Basilica and blessed our image of Our Lady of Altagracia, touching it to the original image in the Basilica. This image will be placed in our chapel. There will be a procession and solemn enthronement today after the 1:30pm Mass. In St. Michael’s Hall today starting after the 9:00am Mass there will be a slide presentation of father’s trip, there will be traditional foods from the Dominican Republic for you to taste, displays of items from this beautiful country. Join us February 21-24 at Incarnation parish for the Latin Mass seminar entitled The Solemn High Mass and Other Liturgies: the Prayers, Rituals and Chants. In this three part seminar, Fr. Weber will speak on the Solemn High Mass, the High Mass, the Low Mass, Gregorian Chant, and the primacy of place of sacred music in the liturgy. We are honored to host Fr. Samuel Weber, O.S.B., an expert in Gregorian Chant, who will share with us his love for sacred music and the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass in the Extraordinary Form. He will also give two sessions to train our schola and our altar servers, both of which are open to registrants who may wish to sit in and learn more about how Gregorian Chant is sung and why the altar servers do what they do. As a most noble closing to this seminar, Fr. Patrick Hough, S.J. will sing a High Mass at 4:30pm on Sunday, February 24, 2013 at Incarnation Church. This will be the first High Mass at Incarnation as we transition to offering the High Mass twice per month in our regular Traditional Latin Mass schedule. It is a high honor to have Fr. Weber visit with us to teach us and train us, and we would love to have you join us for this seminar to learn more about and to help usher in the celebration of the sung High Mass at Incarnation.

FAITH FORMATION’S 2013 LENTEN MISSION This year the children will be collecting money during Lent for our sister Parish, Espiritu Santo in the Dominican Republic. Each class will be adopting a child from their boy’s home and all monies collected by the class will be sent to help that child. The children will be praying for their adopted friend and sending letters to him as well. The home needs $75.00 a month for each child for their care. Parents please have your child “earn” the money for their new friend by doing chores around the house or something extra during lent. Please stop by their classroom to see a picture of the child they are adopting. You and your family are asked to pray for the child as well. REMINDER – NO Faith Formation next Sunday, Feb. 24th, sessions resume March 3rd. Thank you to all of the families who brought in food and participated in our 2nd annual Mardi Gras celebration last week. Another BIG thanks to everyone who donated all the beads for the children to throw out it was AWESOME!! ATTENTION YOUTH OF OUR PARISH!!! "Test" is a four-letter word. Spelling tests, driving tests, SATs, all bring a knot to the stomach. Tests are something we would rather forgo, but also something we must undergo. Lent, too, is a four-letter word and is also a kind
of test, for the only way to Easter is to pass through Lent. Today's reading from Deuteronomy commends Israel for its faith in the God who saves. No matter the tribulation, Israel's faith enables it to persevere. This faith/test theme also appears in the reading from Romans. Paul boldly asserts that faith in Christ will see the believer through any trial. The Gospel passage makes it clear that even Jesus was tested.
It describes a test, a struggle between good and evil, that dramatically demonstrates Jesus' faith in the power of God's life in him. This power enables him to overcome temptation. I always thought today's Gospel shows how Jesus was tempted to be a Messiah in a way that matched human expectations--those of Jews waiting for a messiah--instead of doing what his Father wanted. But I also wonder if these temptations are what we expect of God. Do we expect God to provide for our needs by turning stones into money? God does help us with our troubles, but usually by giving us the strength to get through them with our Godgiven abilities. This might mean finding a better job that
uses more of our talents. It might be forgiving us, if we are the cause of our own troubles, and giving us the courage to start over. Or do we expect God to bring peace to the world by instantly removing all nuclear weapons or capturing all terrorists? When we pray for peace, we could pray that God show us what we can do to bring that peace. We could be generous in giving to the poor, especially where poverty is the cause of war. Maybe we expect God to be a superhero for us, strengthening
our faith with spectacular miracles. Jesus would tell us the same thing he told the devil: "Don't put the Lord your God to the test" (see Luke 4:12). Instead, as we take time to pray over the scriptures, read spiritual books, and share our faith with others, we will find our faith growing and know that the Lord has been with us all along the way. Treasures From our Tradition Often, when a family keeps vigil around a person who is preparing for death, they may notice three interwoven activities. First, the dying person may become more prayerful and reflective than ever before, reviewing life's journey in gratitude to God, or seeking forgiveness and making amends for wrongs. Second, as death approaches, the need to eat and drink is lessened until even an ice cube brushed against the lips is
satisfying. Third, persons who are dying often make plans to give their possessions away, making bequests, handing treasures down, providing for favorite charities. Prayer, fasting, and almsgiving: with these three "pillars" of Lent, we rehearse our death every year in this season, and anticipate the final work we will do in this life. And every year, at the end of our journey, is the joy of Easter and

The Office of Life Ministry will have an opening from August 2013 – April 2014 for a position to work with the Catholic Campaign for Human Development (CCHD). Primer Domingo de Cuaresma Reflexionando la Palabra de Dios Cuaresma es un tiempo interior de búsqueda sincera y valiente en nuestro caminar cristiano. Tiempo de ir al encuentro de nuestro mundo interior, de nuestros propios desiertos y desde allí reafirmarnos en nuestra fe en Jesucristo Resucitado. Es tiempo para volver a preguntarnos, ¿Quién soy? ¿Qué busco? ¿Cuál es el objeto de mi vida? ¿Qué significa vivir como cristiano? Caminar por el desierto es la enseñanza de Dios que nos lleva a buscar sus caminos, caminos de liberación y de salvación para renovar cada día nuestra ilusión y nuestra alegría de vivir. Todos los cristianos estamos llamados permanentemente al desierto, a la purificación, a la presencia íntima en el espíritu. El tiempo del desierto es como un tiempo de prueba y de testimonio. Necesitamos los cristianos unos tiempos de crisis para ir al encuentro de los valores auténticos del evangelio. Solamente a través de las pruebas y del testimonio daremos cuenta del valor de nuestras convicciones. Hoy tendría que ser para nosotros una buena noticia el saber que Jesús fue tentado, como nos lo cuenta el evangelio de san Lucas. El creyente tentado no es un creyente más débil, sino aquel que más posibilidades tiene de mostrar su fortaleza. De ahí que nuestras tentaciones diarias no son un obstáculo para encontrarnos con Dios, sino una ocasión especial, privilegiada para dar respuesta de nuestra fidelidad a Dios y a su mensaje. En el vacío del desierto nos encontraremos con la plenitud de la Palabra. El desierto nos ofrecerá la gran oportunidad de interiorizar la palabra, de hacerla nuestra y transformarla en norma suprema y máxima de nuestra conducta y de nuestra forma de proceder. Por eso la Palabra de Dios marca el verdadero itinerario del desierto, el camino de la auténtica liberación interior. Cuaresma hoy, es nuestro tiempo para vivirlo. Un tiempo que nos ofrece la posibilidad de ser cada día más humanos, porque cada día se hace más profunda e interior nuestra vocación a vivir como hijos de Dios. Es pasar de los ritos, de las cosas, del poder y de los triunfos a la maravillosa riqueza de lo que significa ser cristiano. En esta Cuaresma estamos invitados a descubrir que para ser fieles a Dios debemos arriesgarnos cada día más en la lucha por conseguir una sociedad de hombres y mujeres más libres y más humanos. En definitiva, un compromiso. Nuestras tentaciones de cada día serán siempre: el consumo, el poder y la gloria, el tener, el placer, la vanidad, la frivolidad, el orgullo, la arrogancia, el odio, la vida fácil y cómoda, la ley del menor esfuerzo, la indiferencia, el individualismo, la violencia, la injusticia, la frivolidad y muchas más. «Señor, no nos dejes caer en la tentación», oramos en el Padrenuestro. Consejos para vivir la Cuaresma Que no te consideres dueño de nada, sino humilde administrador de todo. Que no te gloríes de tus talentos, sino que con ellos edifiques a los demás. Que no te deprimas ni te acobardes, porque Dios es tu victoria. Que no te creas santo o te creas ya convertido, porque santo y grande es sólo Dios. Que aprecies el valor de las cosas sencillas. Que valores más la calidad que la cantidad. Que vivas el tiempo presente, sin tantos miedos y nostalgias. Que estés abierto siempre a la esperanza. Que ames la vida y la defiendas. Que no temas la muerte, porque siempre es Pascua.
