March 2, 2014 - Eighth Sunday in Ordinary Time Regulations on Fasting and Abstinence The dual disciplines of fasting and abstinence have a long history in the Catholic Church. Going back to the early Church, the purpose behind the custom of self denial is not punishment; it is to simplify our lifestyles so that we create a certain emptiness. In this way, freed from all distractions, we are able to hear and respond to God’s continued call to conversion and holiness.

MASS SCHEDULE Monday through Friday: 7am & 8:30am

Fasting is to be observed on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday by all Catholics between the ages of 18 to 59 years (inclusive). On days of fasting, one full meal is allowed. Two smaller meals, sufficient to maintain strength, may be taken according to one’s needs, but together they should not equal another full meal. Eating between meals is not permitted, but liquids are allowed. Abstinence from meat is to be observed by all Catholics who are 14 years of age and older. Ash Wednesday, all the Fridays of Lent, and Good Friday are days of abstinence.

Saturday: 8:30 am & 4:30pm (Vigil) Sunday: 7:30am, 9:00am, 10:30am (signed), & 12pm MISAS EN ESPAÑOL: Cada domingo a la 1:30pm Cada viernes a las 6:30 pm LATIN MASS: Sundays at 4:30pm CONFESSIONS: Saturdays - 2:30 to 3:30pm in Church DEVOTIONS Morning Prayer Group: Liturgy of the Hours Mon., Tue., Thurs., Fri. & Sat.: 8:10am - 8:25am ADORATION OF THE BLESSED SACRAMENT Every 1st Friday following the 8:30 am Mass until 6:15pm ROSARY : Thursdays at 11:30am in the chapel ROSARIO EN ESPAÑOL - Jueves de 5:30pm6:30pm en la capilla

Note: If a person is unable to observe the above regulations due to ill health or other serious reasons, they are urged to practice other forms of self denial that are suitable to their condition. Fasting, almsgiving, and prayer are the three traditional disciplines of Lent. The faithful and catechumens should undertake these practices seriously in a spirit of penance and of preparation for baptism or of renewal of baptism at Easter.

GOD IS A LOVING PARENT Some scripture passages require a good deal of study before they yield their inner meaning. Not so with today’s Gospel, a continuation of the Sermon on the Mount. Here we have Jesus’ well-known sayings about God’s care for us. “No one can serve two masters” and “Look at the birds in the sky” have become idioms in our culture. Perhaps they have become too familiar. Jesus’ point is a simple one—if we keep our hearts set on the important things, God will take care of the rest. His use of simple images from nature—birds, flowers, grass—would have resonated just as deeply with his listeners then as they do today. The brief passage from Isaiah, situated as it is in a longer section on the restoration of Zion, uses a wonderful feminine image to portray God’s care for us. Even more than a mother’s care for her own child is God’s attentiveness to our needs. Juxtaposed with the Gospel reading, an image of God as doting parent surfaces. No wonder St. Paul in his letter to the Corinthians is more confident in the judgment of the Lord than in any human assessment! For those whose hearts are set on God’s priorities, the time of judgment can bring nothing but good. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

Losing a child to abortion isn’t easy... But if given the broken pieces, God can make all things new. H.E.A.R.T. provides a confidential, caring group to journey with you to bring hope and healing due to an abortion. In this non-judgmental setting we look to God and trust in his mercy to restore us to wholeness. In this group process we look at: realizing we need healing, acknowledging the abortion - breaking the shame, forgiveness, accepting God's grace, allowing yourself to grieve, self-reconciliation, relationships and ongoing healing. We are looking to start a morning H.E.A.R.T. group in the Lutz / North Tampa area very soon. Anyone affected by an abortion may attend. For more information and to register please call or text Julie at (813) 528-1717 or email: HEART@LifeChoicesWC.org ALL CALLS ARE CONFIDENTIAL Approved by the Project Rachel Office of the Diocese of St. Petersburg.

EXCITING NEWS - VARIABLE RATE TUITION AT BISHOP MC LAUGHLIN CATHOLIC HIGH SCHOOL Beginning with the 2014-2015 school year, there will be a new tuition structure at Bishop McLaughlin. The new variable rates are based on the belief that a Christ-centered Catholic education should be made available to those who may not have the financial means to afford full tuition. The rates are based on a family’s income and begin at only $7,500. Visit the school’s website (www.bmchs.com) or call the Admission Department (727-857-2600, ext. 244) for details. The school is holding the final Open House of the year on March 20th from 6:30 until 8:30 p.m. and all are welcome to attend; no appointment is necessary.

Carnival Raffle Tickets Due to a change by the Post Office in its interpretation of the rules for bulk mailing, we were not able to mail raffle tickets to you this year. But the Show will still go on! We have converted the traditional raffle to a simple 50/50. There will be one grand prize cash drawing and the amount of the prize will be half the value of all tickets sold. That prize could easily exceed the $4000 first prize that was planned for the raffle. We will announce the value of the prize during the carnival as it grows. Following our mailing, many of you would normally send back your ticket stubs with your cash or check donation either by mail or in the collection basket. We want you to do the same thing now but without the ticket stubs. See the following steps Please write “raffle tickets” on your check or on the envelope should you drop it in the collection basket. If you have some of those “return address” stickers that many people use to fill out the tickets, put two dozen of them in the envelope with your donation for us to use. We will fill out the correct number of raffle tickets for you based upon your donation. Ten dollars buys twelve tickets. We had planned on mailing you $20 worth or 24 raffle tickets. Individual tickets are one dollar each. There will only be one cash drawing however there will be many prize drawings regularly throughout the carnival. Winning tickets for these prizes will be returned to the drum for the grand prize drawing. The Grand Prize drawing will be the final event at the carnival. We will draw the winner at 8:00 PM on Sunday, April 6. You do not have to be present to win any of the prizes including the grand prize. If you have any questions, do not hesitate to call Paul Hunter at the parish office. (813) 885-7861

¿Orar cambia tu querer y tus deseos? Entonces, ¿Orar REALMENTE cambia ALGO? Sí, REALMENTE cambia TODO.
