A SUNDAY FOR REJOICING Today’s Gospel story of the prodigal son is a favorite of many. We can identify with all the major figures and their crisscross of emotions. The father’s initial grief over his young son’s avarice is turned to relief at his return. The son’s grief over his loss of fortune, family, and friends is turned to delirious joy at the sight of his father. We understand the eldest son’s bewilderment over his father’s generosity. For the older son, virtue seems not to be its own reward. For all his honorable toil and loyalty, there seems to be no celebration. The father, however, is prodigal in his forgiveness and mercy. He expects the same generosity from his older son. He wants all to rejoice when the lost one is found. This is a Sunday for rejoicing. It’s time to pause, consider, and encourage one another. We are the prodigal children heading home. We are the elder siblings waiting with the eager Father, who scans the horizon. In Christ Jesus we are reconciled to the Father and one another. In his death and resurrection we have passed over. We are a new creation. In this we rejoice. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

READINGS FOR THE WEEK Monday: Is 65:17-21; Ps 30:2, 4-6, 11-13b; Jn 4:43-54 Tuesday: Ez 47:1-9, 12; Ps 46:2-3, 5-6, 8-9; Jn 5:1-16 Wednesday: Is 49:8-15; Ps 145:8-9, 13cd-14, 17-18; Jn 5:17-30

Thursday: Ex 32:7-14; Ps 106:19-23; Jn 5:31-47 Friday: Wis 2:1a, 12-22; Ps 34:17-21, 23; Jn 7:1-2, 10, 25-30 Saturday: Jer 11:18-20; Ps 7:2-3, 9bc-12; Jn 7:40-53 Sunday: Is 43:16-21; Ps 126:1-6; Phil 3:8-14; Jn 8:1-11; Alternate readings (Year A): Ez 37:1214; Ps 130:1-8; Rom 8:8-11; Jn 11:1-45 [3-7, 17, 20-27, 33b-45]

REPENTANCE “We implore you on behalf of Christ, be reconciled to God.” So says Paul in the Second Letter to the Corinthians. Isn’t this what Lent is all about? We know that we are sinners, yet we don’t think about it much. Lent is the time to think about all the ways in which we have failed to be all that we hope to be as followers of Christ. Like the prodigal son in the Gospel, we accept the gifts that God gives but forget the goodness of the giver. We waste our gifts on useless works and useless things. We can’t wait to get to the stores on “Black Friday.” We collect useless junk for our homes, our cars, and our children; things that don’t contribute to our good character, but only to our cluttered lives. We obsess over our phones, our computers, and our i-thingies at the expense of our face-to-face relationships. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

Doors of Mercy parish initiative is NOT a Bible Study. Rather it is an opportunity to learn about God’s mercy and how we can open doors of mercy for ourselves and for others in an environment of fellowship and diversity. Begins on Monday April 4, 2016, the day after we celebrate the Feast of Divine Mercy, and will run for 8 consecutive Mondays. Hours: 7pm-9pm in St. Michael’s Hall. No fee required. Each week we will meet in the hall and begin with a short prayer service, singing, and sharing a light meal. Then we will begin a presentation on God’s mercy. We will have a different presenter each week. The first week Fr. Michael will do the presentation. After the presentation there will be time to reflect on some questions in small groups. There will be both Spanish and English small group discussions available. Topics for reflection include: Six great covenants of the Bible, how the sacraments are Doors of Mercy,

Revelations of St. Faustina & the Divine Mercy devotion, why now is the “time of Mercy”, how can we open ourselves and others up to God’s mercy and how to prepare to receive the graces of this Extraordinary Jubilee year. At the end of the 8 weeks, we will coordinate a pilgrimage to our cathedral of St. Jude in St. Pete where we will walk through the Doors of Mercy and participate in corporal works of mercy in our diocese as one community. We hope you invite others to join you; perhaps you have a family member or friend who has been away from the church…invite them! Perhaps you know someone who needs to be reminded of God’s love and mercy. Invite them! This is a wonderful opportunity to share our faith with others. There are registrations sheets in the back, please fill out your name and contact info if you want to join us in April. To register or for more information call Carmen Cayon at the parish office: 813-884-3624.

Fourth Sunday of Lent

“Amen, I say to you, whatever you did for one of these least brothers of mine, you did for me” (Mt 25:40). Today, we are reminded that Jesus identified himself with our poorest brothers and sisters. The Catholic Relief Services Collection serves Jesus in the victims of human trafficking, those who suffer from unjust laws, and those who need pastoral care and humanitarian assistance across the globe. Through supporting today’s collection, you help Jesus in disguise. Please be generous.

Church of the Incarnation Domingo 6 de Marzo de 2016.

—Peter Scagnelli, Copyright © J.
