In old Jerusalem at this season of the year, the attempt was made to recall the events leading up to Christ’s passion. Those attempts were based not only on time, with celebrations of events as close to the day and hour as possible, but also on people’s best guesses as to the actual place of these events. Vast numbers of pilgrims flooded the city during the forty days of Lent, many of them catechumens in their last stages of preparation for initiation. The fourth-century Spanish nun Egeria wrote a delightfully detailed diary of her experience of this lively and aerobic liturgy, which involved hearty singing, strong preaching, and nimble processions across vast and arduous terrain. Much of this energy was lost over the centuries, with the procession of palms a noteworthy exception. Northern climates had to reinterpret this Jerusalem liturgy, using forsythia, willow, or olive branches, but to this day the entry into Holy Week by a community on the move accompanied by joyful song hearkens back to a venerable tradition. Egeria’s letters were rediscovered a little more than a hundred years ago, but they reveal a pattern of prayer: full, conscious, active participation, to which we have a right and a duty. —Rev. THE NEW COVENANT When the prophet Jeremiah coined the term “new covenant” he was actually doing something quite radical. For the Jewish people, there was only one covenant, the one made between the Lord God and Israel through Moses at Mount Sinai. For Jeremiah to suggest that God would somehow supersede the covenant with a new one would have sounded audacious to Jewish ears. But in this way he is a predecessor of Jesus who, in the Gospel of John, is continually portrayed as superseding the past, establishing the reign of God in a new way. And in today’s Gospel passage, Jesus the “new covenant” speaks the language of his “new commandment” of love when he tells of the dying grain of wheat, and of our own need to die to self in order to be raised with Christ. As Lent ends and we prepare to enter into Holy Week, the dying grain of wheat serves as an excellent symbol of the kind of dying and self-sacrifice to which disciples are called, a symbol of that new covenant written deep within our hearts. PENANCE SERVICES

MEMORIAL OPPORTUNITY

All at 7:00pm Incarnation - March 23 Christ the King - March 24 St. Lawrence - March 25 St. Joseph - March 26

On Easter Sunday we will be offering Masses for all those mentioned in the spiritual bouquets. Envelopes are available in the church foyer. Write down the names of those you wish to remember at Easter on the envelope and place it in the collection basket. Mass cards are available at the Religious Articles Store before and after Sunday Masses and at the Parish Office during the week.

The parish is in need of a new baptismal set used to hold the Oil of Catechumens and the Oil of Chrism in baptismal ceremonies. The beautiful set we'd like to purchase is antique silver plated and includes two glass-lined cruets for the oil, as well as a tray and baptismal shell. We are again offering a wonderful memorial opportunity for you to make a donation in full or in part toward the purchase price of this item. The purchase price is $1300, which is an investment in an exquisite piece that should last for many, many years. Should you decide to make a donation, memorial certificates will be issued for the family or friend in whose memory your gift is given. If you are interested in making a donation, please call Irene in the church office.

MASS VESTMENTS Some of our Mass vestments are over 20 years old and are in dire need of being replaced. We are pleased to bring you this memorial opportunity to donate the cost of a vestment in memory of a deceased family member or friend. We are currently replacing a four piece set of Easter vestments. In appreciation of your gift, we are offering a memorial certificate, as well as placing a memorial tag inside the vestment. If you are interested in memorializing one or more of these vestments, please contact Irene at the church office 813-885-7861.

On Tuesday, March 31, 2015 at 11:30 a.m. Bishop Robert N. Lynch will preside at the Chrism Mass at the Cathedral of St. Jude, 5815 Fifth Avenue North, St. Petersburg. During this Mass the priests of the diocese along with Bishop Lynch will renew their commitment to priestly service. This is also the Mass where the Oil of the Sick and the Oil of the Catechumens are blessed and the Sacred Chrism is consecrated. These oils are used throughout the year in our parish when our community celebrates the sacraments. The faithful are invited to participate in this wonderful diocesan celebration. By virtue of your baptism you share in the priesthood of Christ. The Chrism Mass is an opportunity for you to experience a renewal and recommitment to God and the Church. Please join us.
