Pope Francis, formerly Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio, S.J., had been Archbishop of Buenos Aires, Argentina, since 1998. He was born on December 17, 1936 in Buenos Aires, to an Italian immigrant who worked on the railroads and his wife, also of Italian descent. He was ordained for the Jesuits on December 13, 1969 during his theological studies at the Theological Faculty of San Miguel. He was novice master in San Miguel, where he also taught theology. He served as Provincial for Argentina from 1973 to 1979 and as rector of the Philosophical and Theological Faculty of San Miguel from 1980 to 1986. After completing his doctoral dissertation in Germany, he returned to his homeland to serve as a confessor and spiritual director in Córdoba. On May 20, 1992 he was appointed titular Bishop of Auca and Auxiliary of Buenos Aires, receiving episcopal consecration on June 27. On June 3, 1997 he was appointed Coadjutor Archbishop of Buenos Aires and succeeded Cardinal Antonio Quarracino on February 28, 1998. He was also Ordinary for Easternrite faithful in Argentina, who lack an Ordinary of their own rite. Archbishop Bergoglio was named cardinal by Blessed John Paul II on February 21, 2001. He served two terms as President of the Bishops’ Conference of Argentina from November 8, 2005 until November 8, 2011. He has served on the Congregation of Clergy, Congregation of Divine Worship and Sacraments, Congregation of Institutes of Consecrated Life, and the Congregation of Societies of Apostolic Life, as well as the Pontifical Council for the Family and the Pontifical Commission for Latin America. He was Adjunct Relator General of the 10th Ordinary General Assembly of the Synod of Bishops in October 2001. On March 13, 2013 he was elected the 266th pope in the apostolic succession dating from the time of Saint Peter. Prayer for the new pope O gracious God, our shepherd and guide, look with love on Francis your servant, whom you have appointed as successor to Saint Peter. Grant him courage and wisdom, and fill him with love for your people. May he serve with fidelity all those whom you have entrusted to his care and bring your Church together in unity of heart and purpose as we seek to fulfill the mission of your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit for ever and ever. Amen.

These are pictures of the old church building of Espiritu Santo, in our sister parish at La Vega. Our community is currently assisting in the improvement of this building which will be used as a meeting room for different ministries, a place for the parish youth to gather, and as a social hall. Repairs include extending the walls to add 8 to 10 feet in length, replace the roof, and a bathroom.

Washing Feet Paul Turner “No shirt, no shoes, no service.” Restaurants often display this sign to show who’s not welcome at their table. A sign at the Last Supper could have read, “No shirt, no shoes = service.” It would have shown who was welcome at the table. One of the most striking scenes at the Last Supper happens when Jesus pulls off his tunic, has the disciples remove their sandals, and begins a service like none other — washing feet. The episode, which occurs only in John’s Gospel, comes where we expect to find Jesus’ most famous line from the Last Supper. “This is my body. This is my blood.” Instead of pointing at the bread and wine, he gives an example of service. We begin to see that Eucharist involves more than food and drink — it involves commitment, community, faith and selflessness. Other New Testament writers tell us Jesus said, “Do this,” in reference to the celebration of the Eucharist. John’s Jesus says it in reference to the service of washing feet.

Holy Thursday, March 28th (No Morning Mass) 7:30pm: Mass of the Lord’s Supper 9pm - 11:30pm: Adoration (St. Michael’s Hall) 11:30pm: Tenebrae (Church) For this reason, the liturgy of Holy Thursday invites us to imitate literally the example of Jesus. The presider may wash the feet of members of the community. In this act, the local church witnesses the selfless service of Christ and sees an example of faith in action. If we are believers, if we share in the bread and the cup, then we also share in service. Sometimes we hear the complaint that the washing of the feet is too old-fashioned, that it doesn’t fit our modern culture. Sometimes we search for a more meaningful adaptation washing hands, or shining shoes! But it’s hard to beat the shocking humility of the original gesture. It didn’t fit Jesus’ culture very well either. Peter objected to the whole idea. The service to which Jesus calls us also doesn’t fit the culture. Businesses may call it service, but they charge us even if it’s self-service. The service of the Gospel is freely given. Holy Thursday invites us to the table not as guests who dine and run, but as hosts who eat and serve. The meal isn’t over till the cleanup.
