FOR A FRIEND? To lay down one’s life for a friend may not seem like the greatest love. Isn’t this the same Jesus who said it was more difficult to forgive and love an enemy? If we read on, we hear that Jesus now calls the disciples “friends.” What he is telling them is that they are all “friends” to each other, and that they are “friends” to all who have been chosen by him to be members of his body, the Church. This is not our modern concept of friendship, for these “friends” could possibly be people the disciples did not particularly care for! The greatest love, however, remained to lay down one’s life for their sake, to live in the love begotten by God and that knows God. For us today, our “friends” fill the pews around us on Sunday, they pass us in the aisle at the supermarket, they drive past us on the highway. Would we be truly ready, in love, to lay down our lives for these “friends?” Today’s Readings: Acts 10:25–26, 34–35, 44–48; Ps 98:1–4; 1 Jn 4:7–10; Jn 15:9–17 Copyright © J. S. Paluch Company 8|

LOVE ONE ANOTHER Last Sunday we heard the familiar passage from John’s Gospel in which Jesus uses the metaphor of the vine and the branches. In that passage we were told that if we remained in Christ we would bear much fruit. Today’s Gospel tells us just what that fruit is: love. Today’s second reading and Gospel together create a great hymn to love. The chorus of this hymn is simple—God loves us so much that Jesus was sent into the world so that we would have life. The Lord Jesus, who last week told us to remain in him, this week tells us to remain in his love. In a world marked by division and terrorism, the Lord’s final words in today’s Gospel are a great challenge: “This I command you: love one another.” Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co

TODAY’S READINGS First Reading — The gift of the Holy Spirit was poured out on the Gentiles also (Acts 10:25-26, 34-35, 44-48). Psalm — The Lord has revealed to the nations his saving power (Psalm 98). Second Reading — God is love (1 John 4:7-10) or 1 John 4:11-16. Gospel — No one has greater love than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends (John 15:9-17) or John 17:11b-19.
