Phone: (813) 885-7861 Nativity of Saint John the Baptist June 24, 2012 “Behold, one is coming after me; I am not worthy to unfasten the sandals of his feet.” — Acts 13:25 FORERUNNER OF THE LORD The story of the conception and birth of John the Baptist is a very human story. His aged parents, childless, conceive a son in their old age just as Abraham and Sarah had conceived Isaac. God’s promise of salvation seems to include the delayed birth of very extraordinary children! John was, as the prophet Isaiah says, known to God from his earliest days, fashioned in the womb of his mother, Elizabeth, in secret, before anyone but she knew. He was strong in spirit from before his birth, and he grew to become the most powerful preacher and prophet. He was the chosen forerunner of the Lord; Elijah the prophet come back to announce the coming of the Messiah and to prepare the people by a baptism of repentance. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION It’s midsummer day! We have the advantage of celebrating one of the great hidden treasures of our liturgical calendar on a Sunday this year. There are only three “nativity” feasts on our calendar: for the Lord, the Blessed Mother (September 8), and today’s birth of the Baptist. Today’s date is anchored by the Annunciation (March 25), when Mary learns not only of her own child’s advent, but of Elizabeth’s child. We are exactly half a year away from Christmas Eve. There are strong traditions around this feast. Just as the winter solstice provides a rich vocabulary for Christmas, so does the abundance of light at midsummer inform this celebration. Just as at Christmas, a religious festival spills over into culture. As summer light reaches its peak, the sun-drenched zones of northern Europe see people staying up all night, kindling “St. John’s fires” in the long summer twilight. Bonfires seem to be the unifying force in all these celebrations, kindled along the shores of the St. Lawrence in Quebec and Montreal, with harbor illuminations in France. You may be most interested in the custom in San Juan, Puerto Rico, the Baptist’s own city. People there will leap into the sea between midnight and dawn to honor John. Prayer for Employment LifeChoices Women’s Care Needs Baby Item Donations Do you have any baby items that you no longer need? LifeChoices Women’s Care, a pregnancy resource clinic by St. Timothy and Our Lady of the Rosary parishioners would welcome your items. Pregnant moms participating in our “Women of Worth” program earn the items by coming to the center. Besides baby clothes, bedding and blankets, we could use maternity clothing as well. Our greatest need throughout the whole year are diapers (Sizes 2, 3, 4) and wipes. Please consider donating items to us. The clinic is at 1527 Dale Mabry Highway, Suite 101 in Lutz – (813) 948-7734. We are directly across the street from the Super Walmart in the North Fork Professional Building. We are open on Mondays from 10 am – 6:30 pm, Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10 am – 4 pm. In "Our First, Most Cherished Liberty," the bishops called for a "Fortnight for Freedom," a 14day period of prayer, penance, education and action in defense of religious freedom from June 21st through the Fourth of July. The Fortnight is packed with liturgical and civic significance. It starts on the vigil of the feast of St. John Fisher and St. Thomas More, martyrs who remained faithful to their conscience despite persecution by political power. Archbishop William Lori, chair of the bishops' Ad Hoc Committee on Religious Liberty, will open the Fortnight with Mass in the Archdiocese of Baltimore, the first diocese established in the United States. The Fortnight culminates on Independence Day. At noon on July 4, churches across the country - both Catholic and non-Catholic -- will ring their bells in a witness of solidarity… The Diocese of St. Petersburg is joining dioceses nationwide to highlight the importance of defending our religious freedom. El Papa Benedicto XVI nos ha dicho que “es necesario que todas las personas actúen animadas por el autentico espíritu de paz” (Homilía, 1° de enero de 2011). FIESTA DE MARÍA: 27 de junio Nuestra Señora del Perpetuo Socorro Según la leyenda, un mercader de Creta sustrajo el icono de la Virgen, lo escondió en su equipaje y se embarcó. Durante el viaje hubo una gran tormenta y los viajeros se encomendaron a la Virgen y el mar recuperó la calma. El mercader llegó a Roma con el cuadro y lo cedió a la iglesia de San Mateo. Eran los comienzos de siglo XVI. Durante los tres siglos que el cuadro permaneció en esa iglesia, se registraron innumerables prodigios y milagros. La iglesia de San Mateo fue destruida durante la invasión de Napoleón y el icono cayó en el olvido hasta que llegaron los Redentoristas a la cuidad, encontraron el cuadro y extendieron la devoción de la Virgen del Perpetuo Socorro por todo el mundo. Hoy día la Virgen del Perpetuo Socorro tiene devotos por todo el mundo en diferentes santuarios. Es patrona de Haití después de que en 1833 el país sufriera una gran epidemia de viruela. Los fieles hicieron una novena a la Virgen del Perpetuo Socorro y al poco tiempo la viruela desapareció milagrosamente.
Sabías que... La oración del Rosario se remonta a devociones populares del siglo XII, mientras que la versión actual proviene del siglo XV. Los grandes promotores de la devoción fueron los padres dominicos.

NUESTRA CULTURA Nos sacrificamos mucho y muchas veces por nuestros hijos, por su futuro, por el bien de las personas que amamos. A veces los sacrificios nos vienen impuestos por la vida, pero aceptamos la responsabilidad y nuestro compromiso sin rehuirlo. Para los hispanos la familia tiene un valor altísimo y muchos de nosotros sabemos que estaríamos dispuestos a dar nuestra propia vida por los seres que amamos.
