FEEDING THE WORLD With today’s two accounts of feeding miracles and the psalm response about the Lord’s hand feeding us, it is easy to gloss over the marvelous hymn in Ephesians. It is built around the most potent biblical numbers: one, three, and seven. The core of it is the word “one” expressed seven times. Three of these describe the church: one body, one Spirit, one hope; the next three are the foundations of the church: one Lord [Jesus], one faith, one baptism. All of these are bound up together in the one Father of all. While we might feel daunted by the prospect of duplicating the wonders worked by Elisha and Jesus in the feeding of multitudes, Ephesians gives us a more realistic way to live and “feed” others as the church: by living in humility and gentleness, by acting with patience, bearing with each other in love, and always seeking and striving to preserve unity through peace. Who among us cannot increase the way we “feed” the church and the world by living this way? We are always called upon to “feed” the world in the literal sense; but our mission as church tells us that others are also fed by the way we live and act each moment of each day. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

WILL WE HAVE ENOUGH? Jesus told us to ask his Father for all that we need (John 16:23). He advised us never to worry about whether we would have enough (Matthew 6:25). What might happen if we took these words to heart? How can we take today’s Gospel and let it assure us that we, too, will be fed, and even given more than we need? Jesus cannot look at us and let us go hungry. He will do today what he did in his day. He will begin with what we already have, what we are prepared to share. He will bless it, distribute it, and provide enough for everyone—more than enough. Today’s Readings: 2 Kgs 4:42–44; Ps 145:10–11, 15–18; Eph 4:1–6; Jn 6:1–15 Copyright © J. S. Paluch Company

Healing the Effects of Abortion Related Trauma (H.E.A.R.T.) “It is normal to grieve a pregnancy loss, including the loss of a child by abortion. A hole in one's heart can form so deep that sometimes nothing can fill the emptiness.”

Parishioners of Incarnation, A few years ago I read Donald Miller's book A Million Miles in a Thousand Years in which he explores the idea that our lives are like stories. One of his more striking points is that we don't actually remember much of our past life. They are like useless scenes that get cut out of a movie. We live them, but they aren't memorable enough to retain. That leaves Miller to ponder a scary idea - if we can't remember events from our past, have we actually lived them? Later in the book, Miller talks about making moments in our lives memorable - that is, intentionally looking for ways to make otherwise routine encounters special. One can wait for outside forces, but Miller suggests that our lives are richer when we intentionally work to transform scenes from ordinary to extraordinary. He especially challenges us to do this for others. To make routine situations memorable scenes in the lives of others. That’s what you’ve done for me this summer. This has been my fourth (and last!) summer assignment. It could have been routine and ended up on the cutting room floor but so many of you went out of your way to make memorable scenes for me. Conversations, meals, and even meetings became special because of your kindness and thoughtfulness. I especially appreciate the many expressions of encouragement and your feedback on my homilies. Please know that I’ll take back to Pope St. John XXIII seminary great memories of the people of Incarnation. Thanks for making some great scenes for my life’s movie!
