Seventeenth Sunday in Ordinary Time July 29, 2012 The eyes of all look hopefully to you, and you give them their food in due season. — Psalm 145:15 ONE LORD, ONE FAITH Do you suppose the authors of the four Gospels were aware of today’s first reading from the second book of Kings? Of course they were. The prophet Elisha fed a hundred men with twenty barley loaves in order to prove God’s power. This same miracle, now multiplied by more people fed by fewer loaves, is attributed to Jesus in all four Gospels. In today’s passage from John we even have the detail that the loaves were barley, reminding every pious Jew of that miracle that Elisha worked. Yet Jesus went into hiding when they wanted to make him king. It is the passage from Paul’s Letter to the Ephesians that gives us the reason for this. The power of Jesus comes from God. It is not meant merely to feed us, or to provide one group with a king. There is one Lord, one faith, one God and Father of all who works through Jesus Christ and through us all. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

Monday: Jer 13:1-11; Mt 13:31-35 Tuesday: Jer 14:17-22; Mt 13:36-43 Wednesday: Jer 15:10, 16-21; Mt 13:44-46 Thursday: Jer 18:1-6; Mt 13:47-53 Friday: Jer 26:1-9; Mt 13:54-58 Saturday: Jer 26:11-16, 24; Mt 14:1-12 Sunday: Ex 16:2-4, 12-15; Ps 78; Eph 4:17, 20-24; Jn 6:24-35

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION The feeding of the five thousand (and more) by the seaside is certainly the most famous of picnics. The miracle of the loaves reminds us of the earlier miracle of the wine at Cana. Like the Cana miracle, this one begins with human initiative as the small child responds to the hunger of the crowd by offering a seemingly meager gift. What could be more appropriate for deep summer than a Gospel account of a joyful picnic with Jesus and the generosity of a child at the center? The coming month of August has always been a time for delight in the bounty of the earth, for picnics by the sea, dinner under the stars, for porch and rooftop, for parks and beaches, and enjoying the best of local crops. August’s festivals of Transfiguration and Assumption have long given Christians the best of excuses for feasting on the abundance of summer: corn, tomatoes, pesto, bowls of fresh fruit. Picnics are a sign of the welcome table of God: always room for one more, always plenty to share, always a place of laughter and story-telling and always speaking to us of our deepest longings. Don’t let August pass by without a picnic! —James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

ADORATION By Paul Turner Adoration before the Blessed Sacrament draws the worshiper into spiritual communion with God. Whether done on one’s own time or at a scheduled service, adoration of the Eucharistic presence of Christ fosters our devotion for participation in the Mass. Jesus instituted the Eucharist for our eating and drinking. Sharing communion at Mass brings us nourishment, healing and sustenance. There is no substitute for participation in the Eucharist; adoration should enhance it, not replace it. Catholics reserve leftover communion breads in a tabernacle. The primary purpose for this custom is to have the Body of Christ ready for the dying at any time. The tabernacle also provides communion for the sick or those unable to come to Mass. Because it houses the sacramental Body of Christ, it serves as a place for adoration. Adoration may be private or public. When adoring the Blessed Sacrament in private, Catholics usually go to any church, where the communion hosts are kept inside the tabernacle. They say whatever prayers they wish. Public adoration may take place in the context of a brief service (traditionally called “Benediction” although that only refers to the blessing which concludes it) or over a more extended period of time. The Blessed Sacrament is usually presented for adoration outside the tabernacle on an altar or a stand. Extended periods of adoration used to be common. They filled the void for people who were not receiving communion frequently. However, in the twentieth century, the church urged people to more frequent communion and has forbidden exposition during Mass. Participation in the Eucharist at Mass accomplishes spiritual communion more perfectly and renders simultaneous adoration unnecessary. Prolonged periods of adoration may happen in church where a large number of the faithful are gathering and when the bishop has given his approval. If Mass is celebrated, the Blessed Sacrament should be returned to the tabernacle. Whether the Blessed Sacrament is inside or outside the tabernacle, adoration may invite us into prayer and prepare us for the Eucharist.

—Fray Gilberto Cavazos Glz, OFM, Copyright © J. LECTURAS DE LA SEMANA Lunes: Jer 13:1-11; Mt 13:31-35 Martes: Jer 14:17-22; Mt 13:36-43 Miércoles: Jer 15:10, 16-21; Mt 13:44-46 Jueves: Jer 18:1-6; Mt 13:47-53 Viernes: Jer 26:1-9; Mt 13:54-58 Sábado: Jer 26:11-16, 24; Mt 14:1-12 Domingo: Ex 16:2-4, 12-15; Sal 78 (77); Ef 4:17, 20-24; Jn 6:24-35
